What a terrific show I've got for you this week on BEHIND THE LENS as I get to introduce you to a wonderful British filmmaker, writer/director JOHN MICHAEL KENNEDY, who makes his narrative feature directorial debut with the mystery thriller, AN ENEMY WITHIN. Not only is this John's narrative feature directorial debut, but as I found out, this interview that you are about to hear was his very first interview, something I found surprising given the excellence of his short films. So this is a real treat for all of you – and for me. There is something deliciously venomous pulsing through AN ENEMY WITHIN, writer-director John Michael Kennedy's tightly coiled debut narrative feature. Part Gothic chamber thriller, part psychological standoff, part family bloodsport, Kennedy constructs a sharply staged mystery where inherited privilege, buried resentment, emotional insecurity, and self-delusion become loaded weapons aimed squarely at everyone trapped inside a sprawling English estate. And the beauty of Kennedy's film lies in the fact that virtually nobody inside that house deserves our trust. Written & Directed By John Michael Kennedy, AN ENEMY WITHIN stars William Moseley, Patrick Baladi, Kim Spearman, Alexander Lincoln, Tristan Gemmill, Kate Isset, Toyin Omari-Kinch, Frances Wilding, Mollie Dorman, and Harrison Daniels. A couple of other films I briefly want to mention to you today that are absolute "Must See" films. First is THE SHEEP DETECTIVES, which is a tale that follows George Hardy (Hugh Jackman), a shepherd who loves to read murder mysteries to his sheep, never suspecting that they can understand him. When George is found dead under mysterious circumstances, the sheep decide to solve the crime themselves, even if it means leaving their meadow for the first time and facing the fact that the human world isn't as simple as it appears in books. The other film you must see, also based on a novel, is REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES on Netflix, starring Sally Field as an older widow named Tova, whose life is changed by a friendship with a giant Pacific octopus named Marcellus, and Cameron, a new-in-town employee looking for his father, played by Lewis Pullman. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

The word enemy indicates someone or something that bothers us, disturbs us, takes away our peace and happiness. What is this enemy that is within us?

John and Jim conclude Colin Baker's tumultuous era with a two-part finale born from tragedy, scrambled rewrites, and production chaos - resulting in wildly divergent reactions from the hosts and fandom's most controversial regeneration-that-never-was. The Production Nightmare: John details Robert Holmes passing while writing Part 1, Eric Saward writing Part 2 from Holmes' notes but refusing to release it when JNT rejected his cliffhanger ending (the Doctor and Valeyard falling into an abyss), Pip and Jane Baker getting 10 days to write an entirely new Part 2 using only existing sets from Part 1, and the longest Classic Who episode clocking in at 30 minutes when the Bakers' 38-minute script had to be pared down. The Valeyard Revelation: Extensive discussion of the bombshell that the Valeyard is "an amalgamation of the Doctor's darker impulses from between his twelfth and final incarnations." The hosts debate why this huge concept has never been revisited on screen despite New Who passing that point in the timeline, compare it to Star Trek's "The Enemy Within" and Jekyll/Hyde dynamics, question how the Valeyard established himself on Gallifrey as a respected prosecutor, and marvel that this mythology-altering revelation planted seeds that never grew. The Master's Motivations: Jim questions why the Master appears at all beyond Robert Holmes liking the character. The Final Twist: The Keeper revealed as the Valeyard in disguise, laughing menacingly as the ultimate cliffhanger - planted seeds for a new showrunner who would start from scratch with Sylvester McCoy.
