Cathryn Clüver Ashbrook kennt sich aus mit US-amerikanischer Innen- und Außenpolitik und transatlantischen Beziehungen, hat an der Kennedy School of Government der Harvard University gelehrt und stand an der Spitze der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik. Heute leitet sie bei der Bertelsmann-Stiftung u.a. das Deutsch-Amerikanische Zukunftsforum und ist immer eine prominente Stimme in der Öffentlichkeit. Am 4. Juli feiern die USA 250 Jahre Unabhängigkeitserklärung. Ein Jahrestag, der mit viel Aufsehen; großen Feierlichkeiten und Vorzeigeparaden begangen werden wird. Vorher möchten wir einen Blick auf die USA werfen, analysieren, was sich insbesondere in den Präsidentschaftsjahren unter Donald Trump verändert hat. Deshalb ist Cathryn Clüver Ashbrook zu Gast bei NDR Kultur à la carte, spricht mit Janek Wiechers auch über ihr kürzlich erschienenes Buch "Der amerikanische Weckruf", in dem sie den Appell formuliert: "Wir müssen uns vorbereiten".

Das missfällt US-Präsident Trump, der Netanjahu in einem Telefonat beschimpft haben soll und mahnt, sich militärisch zurückzuhalten - schon damit der Iran nicht aus den Friedensverhandlungen aussteigt. "Es knirscht in dieser Männerfreundschaft", sagt Cathryn Clüver Ashbrook. Die Politikwissenschaftlerin und Buchautorin spricht im Schwerpunkt dieser Ausgabe mit Host Stefan Niemann über den Krieg im Iran und die US-amerikanische Außenpolitik. Ashbrook erläutert, unter welchem Druck Trump auch innenpolitisch steht und was der Krieg im Iran für die militärischen Lagerbestände der USA und für Waffenlieferungen an Verbündete bedeutet. Die Expertin für die transatlantischen Beziehungen analysiert den Umgang Donald Trumps mit der NATO und sie beschreibt, wie die amerikanische Bevölkerung auf die Ukraine blickt.Dort setzt Russland seine massiven Luftangriffe fort. Kai Küstner erklärt, dass die russische Armee offenbar eine sonst sehr sparsame verwendete Lenkwaffe eingesetzt hat, die Hyperschallrakete Zirkon. Es sei davon auszugehen, dass das russische Militär die Luftschläge noch ausweite, weil es an den Frontlinien wenig Bewegung gibt. Kai berichtet über eine engere militärische Zusammenarbeit zwischen Frankreich und Norwegen, die sich auch auf Atomwaffen erstrecken soll. Allerdings werden weder Norwegen noch andere europäische Staaten, die mit Frankreich reden (u.a. Deutschland) in absehbarer Zeit unter einen "französischen nuklearen Schutzschirm" schlüpfen können. Warum die Franzosen weit davon entfernt sind, die USA als nukleare Schutzmacht abzulösen, erläutert Kai genauer. Außerdem geht es in dieser Folge um das Gesetz zum neuen Wehrdienst. Ein Wort taucht derzeit immer wieder auf: "Weckruf". Ex-US-Präsident Barack Obama hat das, was auf den Straßen von Minneapolis passiert ist, einen Weckruf für jeden Amerikaner genannt. Der französische Präsident Emmanuel Macron hat die nach wie vor ungeklärte Lage in Grönland als Weckruf für ganz Europa bezeichnet. Und die USA-Expertin Cathryn Clüver Ashbrook hat ein Buch geschrieben, das das Wort ebenfalls im Titel trägt: "Der amerikanische Weckruf". Im Gespräch beschreibt die Politikwissenschaftlerin, was sie am Demokratie-Abbau der Trump-Regierung besonders schockiert. Ministries of Song: Women's Voices in Ancient Syriac Christianity (U California Press, 2025) is an open access tour-de-force study of the power of women's liturgical singing in late antique Syriac Christianity. Extending women's religious participation beyond the familiar roles of female saints and nobles, Syriac churches cultivated a flourishing but often-overlooked tradition of women's sacred song. Susan Ashbrook Harvey brings this music to life as she uncovers the ways these now-nameless women performed a boldly sung teaching ministry and invited congregations to respond aloud. By exploring their ritual agency, Harvey demonstrates how these choirs helped to shape the formative ethical and moral ideals of their congregations and communities. Women's voices, both real and imagined, enriched the ritual and devotional lives of Syriac Christians daily and weekly, on ecclesial and civic special occasions, in sorrow or joy, with authoritative theological significance and social and political resonance.
