Viele Menschen in den USA protestieren bei den „No Kings“-Demonstrationen gegen Trumps Militäreinsatz im Inneren und politische Repressionen. Politologin Cathryn Clüver Ashbrook von der Bertelsmann-Stiftung analysiert die Lage. Von WDR5.

“Politik mit Anne Will“ diesmal live aus der Urania in Berlin: Zu Gast sind in dieser Folge die Politologin und USA-Expertin Cathryn Clüver Ashbrook und Armin Laschet, CDU-Bundestagsabgeordneter und Vorsitzender des Auswärtigen Ausschusses im Bundestag. Am Tag der Freilassung der zwanzig überlebenden israelischen Geiseln durch die Hamas und der Unterzeichnung des Friedensabkommens für Gaza sprechen unsere Gäste mit Anne Will über die Frage: Wie weit reicht Trumps Macht? Erst durch die Vermittlung des US-Präsidenten ist ein Frieden zwischen Israel und Gaza nach über zwei Jahren möglich geworden. Gleichzeitig nutzt Trump seinen Erfolg massiv zur Selbstinszenierung. Wie profitiert er von diesem Erfolg in Nahost? Hat er diplomatisches Talent bewiesen? Und wie sind die Aussichten für den Friedensprozess in Gaza, der nun in mehreren Phasen ablaufen soll, für deren genauen Ablauf aber vieles noch ungeklärt ist? Trumps Einsatz für den Frieden in Nahost steht im Widerspruch zu seiner Innenpolitik in den USA. Dort setzt er seit Beginn seiner Amtszeit alles daran, demokratische Institutionen zu schwächen, spricht von einem “Krieg im Inneren”. “Da sitzt ein Tyrann im Weißen Haus”, sagt Cathryn Clüver Ashbrook, die hinter dem vermeintlichen Chaos, das Trump und seine Administration in den USA anrichten, ein klares System erkennt. Dass sich die deutsche Bundesregierung den innenpolitischen Entwicklungen in den USA kritisch entgegenstellen könnte, hält Armin Laschet für “völlig ausgeschlossen”, zu schwierig sei die geopolitische Lage. US-Präsident Trump nutzt militärische und ökonomische Stärke auch und vor allem in seiner Außenpolitik: Ein zutiefst unilateralistischer Ansatz ersetzt so den Multilateralismus. Aus dem Westen gibt es z.B. jetzt viel Lob für Trumps Nahost-Friedensplan, der erstmals arabische und muslimische Länder in einen möglichen Friedensschluss mit Israel einbindet. Der Umgang mit und die Einbindung von Autokraten wie Putin, al Sisi, Xi oder Erdoğan durch Trump ist dabei fast schon normal. Wie müssen die liberalen Demokratien damit umgehen? Diese Rede war mit 1 Stunde und 40 Minuten rekordverdächtig lang - enthielt aber wenig Neues. “America is back”, sagte Trump und rühmte sich mit den erfolgreichen ersten 43 Tagen seiner Regierungszeit. Die Demokratinnen und Demokraten im Kongress protestierten mit Schildern, auf denen beispielsweise stand: “This is not normal.” “Flood the zone”, nach diesem Prinzip verfährt die Trump-Administration. Es geht dabei um die komplette Überlastung des Systems mit politischen Entscheidungen und Nachrichten und dieser Zustand überfordert sowohl amerikanische Bürgerinnen und Bürger als auch die Medien und Gerichte. In den ersten Wochen seiner Präsidentschaft hat Donald Trump nämlich sehr vieles angeordnet: Er hat den Notstand an der Grenze zu Mexiko ausgerufen und dort das Militär eingesetzt, ist aus dem Pariser Klimaabkommen und der WHO ausgetreten, will das Staatsbürgerschaftsprinzip der USA verändern und hat Trans-Athletinnen vom Frauensport ausgeschlossen. Zuletzt verkündete er zwei Entscheidungen von massiver Tragweite: Er setzte die Militärhilfen für die Ukraine im Wert von über einer Milliarde US-Dollar vorerst aus und führte Einfuhrzölle von 25 Prozent für alle Produkte aus Kanada und Mexiko ein. Trumps Entscheidungen haben für die Menschen im Land gravierende Folgen und sorgen zugleich international für Erschütterung.
