The Surfer’s Journal presents Soundings with Jamie Brisick

Leah Dawson grew up in Florida, and moved to Oahu to attend University of Hawaii, where she earned a BA in Creative Media in 2008. Soon after, she started work as a production assistant for the Vans Triple Crown, launching her into a career behind the camera. As a surfer, Dawson's approach is grounded in freedom of expression and dance, on all manner of crafts, with nods to the surfers who have informed her wave-riding odyssey—Rell Sunn, Margo Oberg, Jericho Poppler, and Lynne Boyer, to name but a few. She is the cofounder of Salty Sensations, in which she and her partners, Kassia Meador and Makala Smith, host surf retreats at select spots worldwide. She's also a co-founder of Changing Tides Foundation, a women-led organization that celebrates diversity and inclusivity. In this episode of Soundings, Dawson talks with Jamie Brisick about the importance of believing in something, attaining longevity as a surfer, the Blue Crush generation, the freedom of the glide, lineup dynamics, the power of uplifting others, and the most memorable moments she's captured through the viewfinder.

Catherine is here today with Liz Clark. When Liz was nine, her family spent seven months sailing down Mexico's Pacific Coast. After returning to land life in San Diego, she dreamed of one day seeing the world by sailboat. While earning her BA in Environmental Studies, she fell in love with surfing. After college, she serendipitously met a mentor who helped her acquire a sailboat. Liz left California at 25 years old as captain of her 40-ft sailboat, Swell, in 2006, and has sailed over 20,000 nautical miles in the Pacific exploring for remote waves to surf, learning from new cultures, seeking truth, living simply from the sea, and promoting environmental causes. She kept her nomadic lifestyle going through writing, blogging, photography, representing conscious brands, and earning recognition as a surf adventurer, environmental activist, and captain. In 2015, she was nominated by National Geographic for Adventurer of the Year. Her recently released memoir, Swell: A Sailing Surfer's Voyage of Awakening, details both her inner and outer journeys over the last decade. She hopes to inspire people to live their passions and reconnect with nature and our inherent Oneness. She is now based in Tahiti, taking a break from sailing to focus her energy on environmental and animal welfare activism, working with Changing Tides Foundation in the US, and A Ti'a Matairea in Tahiti. Becky Mendoza was born and raised in Miami, Florida to parents who emigrated from Cuba, it wasn’t until she graduated from the University of Florida and backpacked through Europe, that her desire for an education through travel and adventure, was born. With a Law Degree and Masters in Sports Administration in-hand, she moved to Encinitas, CA and began her career as an action sports and entertainment lawyer, opening up her own firm, Action Sports Law Group (ASLG), in 2009. Through ASLG, Becky works with top companies, artists and athletes in action sports helping them with general contract matters and visas to the US. As she became more well-traveled, she began to seek more from her adventures. In 2014, she did her first Clean Water Courier trip through Waves for Water to Nicaragua, where she raised funds to purchase and distribute 54 Sawyer water filters on a surf trip. After that, she decided the following year to bring filters to Mainland Mexico, to the remote coastal areas of Jalisco, south of Puerto Vallarta, launching “Clean Mexi-Agua” with fellow CTF board member, Sam Bennett. After a successful first trip, their intent was to return to provide more filters for the surrounding communities. Unfortunately, Hurricane Patricia hit the Clean Mexi-Agua communities head-on just 6 months later and she returned for some very impactful disaster relief work. Through her work in Nicaragua and Mexico, Becky has realized her calling to help others around the world, which is where the idea for Changing Tides Foundation was born. Her goals are to inspire others to help while they’re on their adventures, because there is no better way to show your appreciation to the places you visit than to give back to its people. Changing Tides Foundation was born from the simple idea that the world would be a better place if we were all given the opportunity to give back. Established in 2016, by a group of water women and adventurers, they feel it is their calling to help others. They do this by teaming up with local organizations globally to raise awareness and address social, environmental, health and safety concerns in the places they visit, because TOGETHER WE ARE BETTER. Their mission is to bridge the gap between you, the traveler, and the causes on the ground. They are paving a way for you to SERVE NATURALLY, adding life-changing experiences to your journey. By collaborating with eco-minded brands,  ADVENTURE CONSCIOUSLY, leaving behind the smallest footprint possible, in an effort to preserve the beauty of the places we travel to. Freesurfer Leah Dawson peels back the layers and dares to ask: "What makes me feel most like myself?" and "How is my surfing an extension of that self?"There are many ways to be male, and many ways to be female. Though our culture is full of prescriptions for how to do it the “right” way. Leah Dawson thanks surfing for leading her along the path to honouring her femininity. Exploring retro-to-modern single fins, twin fins, finless boards, and shaping herself, Leah is among a small handful of surfers who seek to explore the spectrum of wave sizes and crafts. Leah's is a story about asking the tough questions of ourselves, confronting societal expectations, the power of mentorship, and finding ourselves more fully within the context of a loving community. As early as she can remember Jianca Lazarus saw the world as if through the lens of a camera. Just as soon as got one in her hands Jianca jumped into a decades long career documenting the extremes of the natural world and human experience. At a live taping at Asbury Park Yacht Club the Changing Tides Foundation co-founder brings us into the intimacy of documenting sailer-adventurer Liz Clark one-on-one in the middle of the Pacific, the raw power of paddling into historically XXL waves off the Dominican Republic, and a consideration on leaving South Africa alone at age 17 to make it in the Big Apple. Big Wave Surfer Leah Dawson and Big Wave Surfer Attorney Becky Mendoza visited the north coast of the Dominican Republic with a team of other female wave stars who make up the Changing Tides Foundation. The team worked with a group of local girls who attend the Mariposa Foundation, an organization which aims to end generational poverty by educating and empowering young women. The first thing the girls learn to do is swim and some even surf. Leah Dawson made the film "Sameseas" about the trip in which she and her crew surfed 10 foot swell upon arrival, immediately demonstrating to the young students that women also belong in the lineup. We talk about there experience with Mariposa Foundation and how surf and environmental education are pathways to leadership for these kids. "Sameseas" will be featured in 2018 NY Women's Surf Film Festival which launches July 27th at Rockaway Beach Surf Club and August 3rd at Montauk Beach House. Davina Grincevicius founder and organizer of the festival joins us to preview the films and what's evolved six years in.
