Welcome to Episode #273This weeks topic: Midlife can feel like standing at a crossroads where the road behind is longer than the one ahead. It's a season marked by reflection, reassessment, and sometimes, an unexpected crisis of identity. The pitfall isn't the aging itself—it's the quiet realization that dreams deferred might stay that way forever. Midlife isn't a crisis—it's a clarification. The pitfall is mistaking discomfort for defeat. Many find themselves caught between caring for aging parents and supporting their own children, all while grappling with career plateaus and personal reinvention. The trap is believing it's too late to change course, too late to pursue passion, too late to start over. You're not running out of time; you're running into the truth of who you really are.Reclaim your wisdom, power, and liberation that comes with age. change your life - How you feel about yourself - "affects"your ability to manifest" This episode will help shed some light - on how this new phase of life will change "everything" - Let's learn together.. Brian Sluga started running in sixth grade. His college track team didn't qualify for the national finals, so he went home, took a long shower, and discovered a lump on his testicle. He told his dad, who stopped mowing the yard and took Brian to their family doctor near Peoria, Illinois. After examining him, this doctor sent him to a urologist down the hall, who diagnosed testicular cancer. Sixteen hours later, Brian's surgeon removed the testicle. Because the cancer spread to his lymph nodes, Brian also had the RPLND surgery followed by regular blood tests and scans to monitor a possible recurrence, which did not happen.Fast forward some 40 years to 2026. Brian's new book, "The Shriek I Do Remember," will be released on February 8. It's about his testicular cancer journey and other stories about his life. From Brian Sluga's website, here is a look at the new book. "The Shriek I Do Remember is a story of hope. It'sthe story of a survivor, as Brian Sluga shares how, as a young college athlete, he found a lump. He had no idea what it was or how it would change his life." It's officially the first week of winter, even though winter weather has felt nonstop for the past month — and this episode fully matches the chaos. The girls kick things off by sharing more standout favorites from this year's Holiday Gift Guide, then dive headfirst into a week that somehow included Florida travel drama, milestone birthdays, forgotten memories, and a serious reality check about health.Lauren (LaLa) just returned from Florida, where things went exactly as expected — meaning, of course, something went wrong. Before boarding her flight home, passengers were delayed due to a fuel leak on the plane, setting the tone for the rest of the week. Add in the shock of LaLa turning 40 years old on Christmas, and let's just say… she is not taking “official adulthood” well.Meanwhile, Shawna had her own shocking discovery. While scrolling through old videos on her phone, she found footage from her mom's 60th birthday party --- a party Shawna herself planned and threw, and has absolutely no memory of the event at all. Which naturally leads to laughs, disbelief, and some very real questions. In between the chaos, the girls reflect on one of their most meaningful holiday traditions: delivering holiday gift bags to the pediatric unit at Garnet Medical Center. Each bag was put together to bring comfort, joy, and a reminder that these children are not forgotten during the holidays. The girls are incredibly grateful to the brands who partnered with them and helped make this year's gift bags possible, including PATH Water, Bored No More, Toothbrush Toys, Wright Brothers, Diel Makeup, Penelope & The Vase, Be Blends, Finding Joy, and That's It Fruit snacks. Their generosity helped spread holiday cheer where it was needed most. As the new year approaches, and with LaLa officially entering a new decade... Shawna and LaLa get real about their goals for the year ahead, including working out more, prioritizing their health, and actually listening to their bodies instead of pushing through burnout. If you've ever forgotten your age, questioned your memory, hated winter, or felt personally attacked by a birthday --- this one's for you.

Donating money can induce anxiety if you're not sure how to afford it or feel pressured into doing so by the people around you. “Try This” host Cristina Quinn talks to Washington Post personal finance columnist Michelle Singletary about how to give back, whether it's through money or time. Singletary reminds us that there's always a way to give. She explains how to think through where you want to give, how to afford it and how to commit to giving year-round. Singletary also shares her personal experiences and passion for why she gives, how to make sure you're giving to a legitimate charity, and what you will experience when you give back. Chances are, you're getting a lot of ads right now inviting you to celebrate the holidays by spending money. The U.S. economy is lopsided toward this time of year. Retailers rely on holiday shopping. And nonprofits, too, depend on end-of-year donations. For the latest in our series Professional Help we asked an expert how to prioritize giving back during the holidays. Our ask: Help me give back during the holidaysOur professional: Nathan Dungan, president and CEO of Share Save SpendHandsOn Twin Cities has this guide for volunteering during the holidays.
Service to others runs deep in the Payton family DNA. There's a global reminder of that before every Super Bowl, when one NFL humanitarian is bestowed with the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. In this episode of the Crisis Cast, WGN-TV's Jarrett Payton talks about the life lessons he learned from his father, and the vision he has for his own legacy. Lissa & Thom dive into Jarrett's obsession with watching game film, Ben Johnson's much-needed honesty, and JP's predictions for a Bears' playoff run. It's not like we're hungry. It's only been 40 years since the Bears won a Super Bowl. This week's Crisis Cast hero is Chicago ECO House CEO Quillen Blackwell.
What if "giving back" isn't about writing bigger checks but about using what you're already great at? Most people think philanthropy is reserved for people with their names on buildings. That assumption keeps them from realizing they already have something valuable to give. Joe Saul-Sehy, OG, and Neighbor Doug welcome John Studzinski, managing director at PIMCO and founder of the Genesis Foundation, for a conversation about generosity, purpose, and impact that actually applies to everyday Stackers. John challenges the whole concept of "philanthropy" as something for the ultra-wealthy and reframes giving as a muscle anyone can build using time, talent, and intention instead of just cash. The conversation reveals how you can create meaningful impact right now, regardless of your bank balance. Whether you're great at organizing, teaching, listening, or solving problems, those skills matter more than you think. John breaks down how to identify your personal talent for impact and why intentional giving beats reactive charity every single time. Then the show shifts to retirement planning, specifically how to design a glide path that works with your behavior instead of fighting it. Joe and OG break down how to manage risk as you age, why annuities keep showing up in retirement conversations, and why smart planning focuses less on chasing perfect returns and more on creating stability you can actually live with. Because the math might say one thing, but your ability to sleep at night matters just as much. Along the way, the crew takes a detour into ChatGPT's potential future, explores a few behavioral finance truths that hit uncomfortably close to home, and wraps with a pop culture review reminding us that money decisions never happen in a vacuum. This episode is about aligning your resources (financial and otherwise) with the life you actually want to live. What You'll Walk Away With: • Why "giving" is a better word than "philanthropy" and why that shift in language actually matters • How to identify your personal talent for impact even without significant wealth • Why generosity works best when it's intentional and strategic rather than reactive • How retirement glide paths actually work and why your behavior matters more than the math • The role annuities can play in reducing retirement anxiety without sacrificing everything • Why percentages can be misleading, real dollars tell better stories, and context is everything • How fear, FOMO, and age quietly shape your investment decisions in ways you might not notice • Permission to build a retirement plan around stability instead of maximum growth This Episode Is For You If: • You want to give back but think you need more money before you can make a real difference • You're approaching retirement and tired of advice that ignores how you actually feel about risk • You've wondered if annuities deserve their bad reputation or if there's something there • You want your money decisions to reflect your values, not just optimize for returns • You believe purpose and planning should work together, not compete Before You Hit Play, Think About This: What's a talent you already have that could create more impact than money alone? And when it comes to retirement investing, what decision do you know is emotional but still struggle with? Drop your answers in the comments because John's perspective on giving and the crew's take on retirement planning might shift how you think about both. Learn more about your ad choices. We meet Jesse Cody and Mike Rose today, and hear about their non-profit, Hike the Good Hike, an organization committed to enhance mental wellness through nature. They have partnered with several well-known outdoor brands to provide a path for a disparate cohort of people taking on US hikes in 2026. Jesse and Mike value the stories that hikers tell and this podcast will help tell some of those stories as we meet most, if not all, of the 2026 cohort in the coming weeks. I encourage you all to find out more about this deserving organization at their website, Hike The Good Hike and, should you wish to donate to the cause, you can do so here. Give Back with HTGH Also today, we meet Max Kiel from Hyperlite Mountain Gear, as he shares his knowledge about the four packs I wanted to learn about. I had my clear preference coming into the conversation, and he clarified my thinking. Here's the pack I chose. Finally today, my accountability blog records the hiatus I had in my training before picking up once more, earlier this week. I've also got gear, food and transportation issues to share with you all. I used my hike last year on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. You can learn more about the hike and the organization–and donate–by visiting Hike with Steve - Empowering Parents, One Step at a Time | Parenting Matters %. This past summer I had the opportunity to join some amazing podcaster's for the Death Not Yet Series. This episode of Survivor || TERRI JENTZ || The Last Trip for Death Not Yet first aired on July 4th. This is a Podcaster's Give Back collaboration. All podcasters have donated their time and research to help advocate for victims of domestic violence. And we are raising money to give back to non profits which are standing with survivors. To donate, please visit buymeacoffee.com/youshouldbehere. In 1977, Terri and her college roommate, Avra Goldman, biked across America in search of freedom, adventure, and a little time to figure life out. They were students, dreamers - two women finding their place in the world. And then, one night in a quiet Oregon park, that journey turned into something unspeakable. A truck. A man with an axe. No motive. No warning. And somehow... Terri survived. This isn't just a story of what happened that night. This is about what came after - the silence, the unanswered questions, the system that failed. And it's about how Terri, years later, went back - not just to that campsite, but into the shadows of her own memory, determined to face the monster who tried to kill her.
