“I do want to make money, but I want to make money in the right way, ethically. But more importantly, I want use this money to be able to give back.”Charles Gitonga speaks to entrepreneur and businessman Mohammed Dewji about becoming one of Africa's youngest billionaires and how he wants to use his wealth.Mohammed Dewji is a Tanzanian businessman, entrepreneur and philanthropist who has primarily accumulated his wealth from his family business, an East African conglomerate founded by his grandparents and expanded by his father in the 1970s. It deals with textile manufacturing, flour milling, beverages and edible oils. About twenty-five years ago, Africa had no dollar billionaires. Today, there are still only 23, not a huge number for a continent rich in mineral wealth and an abundance of relatively cheap labour. Their combined wealth has grown to more than 100 billion US dollars.Dewji signed the Giving Pledge in 2016 promising to donate at least half his fortune to philanthropic causes. He explains why he believes billionaires have a responsibility to give back.Thank you to the Focus on Africa team for its help in making this programme. Let's use Capernaum as an example for us in 7 short minutes.https://youtu.be/wZb2vrUqh-8

Listeners get a taste of Brian's passion, his favorite local spots, and the importance of kindness and connection in making Grayslake a special hometown for all. Certainly! Here's your article with "Wheez" replaced by "weez" and "weez's" where appropriate, while keeping the format, content, and context unchanged: From Hobby to Hometown Hero: Lessons from weezs Groovin Barbecue on Building a Passion-Driven Business in Grayslake In the heart of Grayslake, Illinois, community isn't just a buzzword—it's a way of life. The latest episode of the "Discovering Grayslake" podcast captures this spirit through the story of Brian Calhoun, owner and pitmaster of weezs Groovin Barbecue. Brian's journey from truck driver and hobbyist to respected barbecue competitor and local business owner is a masterclass in following your passion, building authentic connections, and serving your community with heart. Whether you're a budding entrepreneur, a barbecue enthusiast, or simply someone who loves a good hometown success story, Brian's insights offer valuable lessons on turning a personal passion into a thriving business. Let's break down the key themes and actionable tips from this episode, so you can apply them to your own journey—whatever your "barbecue" may be. 1. Embrace Your Roots and Tell Your Story Brian's Approach: weezs Groovin Barbecue isn't just a catchy name—it's a reflection of Brian's family history, musical background, and personal quirks. The nickname "weez" came from childhood, while "Groovin" nods to his years as a drummer. This personal touch gives his business a unique identity that resonates with customers. Actionable Advice: Infuse Your Brand with Personality:** Don't be afraid to let your story shine through your business name, branding, and customer interactions. People connect with authenticity. Share Your Journey:** Use your website, social media, and in-person events to tell the story behind your business. Customers love to support people, not just products. Honor Your Influences:** Whether it's family, music, or another passion, let those influences shape your business culture and offerings. 2. Start Small, Learn Relentlessly, and Grow Organically Brian's Approach: Brian's barbecue journey began during the COVID-19 pandemic, sparked by a simple Weber grill and a desire to try something new. He dove into online tutorials, experimented with recipes, and gradually built his skills. His first big break came when he catered a last-minute event at a local brewery—an opportunity he seized despite initial nerves. Actionable Advice: Begin with What You Have:** Don't wait for perfect conditions. Start with the tools and knowledge you have, and improve as you go. Invest in Learning:** Watch videos, read books, and seek out mentors. Brian's willingness to learn from others—both online and in person—accelerated his growth. Say Yes to Opportunities:** Even if you feel unprepared, taking on new challenges can open doors and build confidence. Let Growth Happen Naturally:** Brian didn't force his business to scale overnight. He focused on quality and let word-of-mouth and community support drive demand. 3. Respect Tradition, But Make It Your Own Brian's Approach: Brian is deeply respectful of the culinary traditions behind the dishes he prepares. He studies the origins of recipes, adapts them thoughtfully, and always strives to honor their roots—whether he's making Mexican barbacoa or classic American barbecue. Actionable Advice: Do Your Homework:** Understand the history and techniques behind your craft. This builds credibility and deepens your appreciation for what you do. Innovate with Integrity:** Adapt recipes or business practices to fit your style, but always acknowledge where your inspiration comes from. Ask for Feedback:** Brian's friends and family were his first taste-testers, helping him refine his recipes before going public. 4. Build Community—Inside and Outside Your Business Brian's Approach: From the barbecue competition circuit to local Grayslake events, Brian has found a sense of belonging and camaraderie. He credits much of his success to the supportive barbecue community and the relationships he's built with sponsors, fellow competitors, and local businesses. Actionable Advice: Network Authentically:** Attend local events, join professional groups, and support other businesses. Genuine relationships lead to opportunities and support. Give Back:** Brian uses the American Legion's kitchen, knowing his fees support a good cause. Look for ways your business can contribute to the community. Collaborate:** Partner with other local businesses for events, sponsorships, or cross-promotions. Everyone wins when the community thrives. 5. Balance Passion with Practicality Brian's Approach: Brian continues to work as a truck driver while running his barbecue business, balancing financial stability with his entrepreneurial dreams. He's strategic about which events he caters, preferring smaller gatherings where he can focus on quality over quantity. Actionable Advice: Don't Quit Your Day Job (Yet):** It's okay to build your business on the side until it's sustainable. This reduces stress and allows you to make thoughtful decisions. Know Your Limits:** Focus on what you do best, and don't overextend yourself. Brian prefers catering and competitions over running a full-scale restaurant. Set Clear Goals:** Brian's next big investment is a Texas smoker, and he's working toward it through event earnings. Define your milestones and work toward them step by step. 6. Leverage Social Media—But Stay True to Yourself Brian's Approach: While Brian admits he could be more active on social media, he prefers a low-key, authentic approach. He shares behind-the-scenes content on Instagram and Facebook and is considering TikTok, but avoids being overly promotional. Actionable Advice: Show, Don't Just Tell:** Share videos and photos of your process, events, and personal moments. People love seeing the real you. Ask for Help:** If social media isn't your strength, enlist a friend or hire someone to help create content. Engage, Don't Just Broadcast:** Respond to comments, share community news, and celebrate your customers. Social media is a conversation, not a megaphone. 7. Make Family and Relationships Central to Your Journey Brian's Approach: Brian's relationship with his son, Austin, is at the heart of his story. He involves Austin in competitions, travels together, and uses barbecue as a way to bond and create lasting memories. Actionable Advice: Include Loved Ones:** Find ways to involve family and friends in your business. Shared experiences strengthen relationships and make the journey more rewarding. Prioritize Balance:** Adjust your schedule to make time for important people and events. Success is sweeter when shared. Be Vulnerable:** Brian's openness about his fears and growth as a father makes his story relatable and inspiring. 8. Author, entrepreneur, and founder Dr. Barb Rembiesa talks with Kerry about her new book, My Nothing Is Someone Else's Everything: How Small Acts Can Create Big Change. She talks about how people can view their gifts and talents as insignificant when, instead, they should be seen as currency to trade and give back within one's community. She shares some of the ways one can do so from her book and discusses how she's applied them in her own life to benefit communities and entrepreneurs around the world. Dr. Barb's book is available for pre-order at multiple retailers and will launch on June 2, 2026.

Trigger Warning: This episode includes discussion of childhood abuse, including physical abuse, humiliation/degradation, and a brief mention of child sexual abuse. It also references trauma symptoms (anxiety, nightmares, rage), dissociation/out-of-body experiences, substance use, and toxic relationships. If any of this feels activating today, please take care of yourself—pause, skip, or listen with support. Some pain doesn't fade with years—it just goes quiet and starts steering the wheel. On Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, hosted by Yusuf, we sit with the real mechanics of unresolved trauma and what it takes to finally release it. This episode is for anyone who feels “fine on the outside” but still reacts, fears, numbs, or spirals in ways that don't match the present. Robert Bleck shares how early wounds shape shame, rage, and coping patterns—and a three-phase path he calls Source Completion Therapy that aims to bring buried emotions to the surface safely, so healing can actually move. About the Guest: Robert Bleck is the creator of Source Completion Therapy and author of Give Back the Pain. He holds a PhD in counseling, has taught and trained graduate students, and developed a child counseling program at a university. He also shares his own lived experience of childhood abuse. Episode Chapters 05:45 — Opening: when pain makes you sensitive, not hard 07:33 — Robert's early trauma and the roots of empathy 10:36 — Survival tools: sports, nature, and finding a way out 14:37 — “Time doesn't heal”: why wounds stay active underneath 16:01 — How buried emotions become anxiety, rage, compulsions, and numbness 20:06 — Source Completion Therapy: awareness → emotional release → completion 32:18 — Where to find Robert's work and book Key Takeaways: If your reactions feel bigger than the moment, ask: “What older feeling is this protecting?” Notice “diversions” (numbing, compulsions, rage, avoidance) as signals—not character flaws. Start with awareness: who hurt you, how, and what you learned to believe about yourself. Use safe expression (journaling, art, voice, guided reflection) to bring feelings up gently. “Completion” means naming impact and truth—directly or through visualization/writing if needed. Go at a pace that feels safe; trust-building is part of the healing. Send a textA lot of good food never makes it to a plate. In Fresno, that often looks like backyard trees dropping grapefruit and lemons by the bucket and packing houses tossing out “imperfect” mandarins that taste just fine. We sit down with Simon and Aleeza, the founders of All For Kindness, to unpack how a simple idea—rescue surplus fruit and deliver it fast—grew into a volunteer-powered network moving roughly 12,000 pounds of fresh produce each week.We trace their origin story from a single neighborhood post to three weekly harvests with 30 to 50 volunteers, and we get into the nuts and bolts: coordinating routes, sorting, storage, and next-day deliveries to food banks, shelters, and homebound neighbors. If you care about public health, this is prevention in action. Fresh citrus brings vitamin C, fiber, and joy to families stuck in food deserts, where shelf-stable boxes can't meet every need. You'll hear how they partner with growers and packers to reclaim cosmetically imperfect fruit, why specific volunteer asks beat vague calls for help, and what it takes to keep the operation humane and sustainable. The conversation also gets personal. We talk about guarding energy with a weekly digital sabbath, handling 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. days, and the small moments that fuel big work—the kid whose face lights up at a fruit bag, the neighbor who hasn't had an orange in a year. We share the real constraints too: summer heat, the race against spoilage, a pressing need for a trailer, and a modest warehouse to scale beyond citrus into other produce. Along the way, we make the case that kindness isn't performative; it's a supply chain that rewires how a community eats.If you've got a tree, a truck, a spare hour, or a lead at a packing house, you're already part of the solution. Tap to listen, then join a Sunday pick, run a delivery route, or help fund the trailer that multiplies every volunteer's impact. Subscribe, leave a review to boost the message, and share this episode with someone who has more fruit than they can carry. What if the key to healing deep emotional trauma wasn't just talking about it, but safely re-experiencing it? Join host Khudania Ajay (KAJ) with Dr. Robert Bleck, creator of Source Completion Therapy (SCT), a three-phase process designed to cleanse and heal the wounds of abuse and suffering. We demystify this approach: from confronting the true source of pain, to the critical role of sensory immersion, to the final act of "giving back the pain" through symbolic or direct confrontation.
