Chris Craytor took on a significant challenge when joining the board of IHRSA, the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association. At a time when raising funds was particularly difficult, Craytor played a key role in steering the organization towards a stronger focus on advocacy, education, and research. With the strategic hire of Liz Clark as CEO, Craytor helped pivot IHRSA—now known as the Health and Fitness Association—towards these critical areas. This shift was underscored by the COVID pandemic, which signifcantly heightened awareness among club operators about the importance of advocacy. Craytor envisions increased efforts to influence state-level legislation, recognizing that many crucial battles for the industry are won and lost at the local level. Chris and host Pete Moore discuss a range of topics crucial to the fitness industry, including managing member relationships, especially within the Medicare Advantage community, and the critical role of customer retention. Chris shares his innovative approach to business by addressing personal and professional challenges and emphasizes the significance of strong leadership. They also explore the ever-evolving landscape of health insurance, exercise and its impact on long-term health, and the importance of preventative care covered by groups like Medicare and Medicaid. Chris also highlights the rapid growth in insurance-based memberships and the challenges and solutions provided by Welld Health, a leading software platform connecting health clubs to healthcare payers. Key themes discussed Discussing importance of active voter participation and issues. ACAC founded with inclusive, community-focused approach. Layering AI in medical data for reimbursement. Software companies require 5-year SaaS agreements. States for ACAC business expansion in 36 months. Clean database, streamline member files, reduce rejection. Popular programs offer competitive advantages in business. A few key takeaways: 1. Medicare Advantage Programs and Revenue Potential: Health clubs can significantly benefit by targeting the Medicare Advantage community. Large chains have the potential to generate millions of dollars monthly through these programs. 2. Customer Retention and Leadership: Effective customer retention efforts are crucial for clubs. Finding the right individual within the club to manage these efforts can make a significant difference. The role of a Chief Revenue Officer was highlighted as potentially beneficial for improving accounting processes and overall efficiency. 3. ACAC's Inclusive and Comprehensive Approach: Chris shared insights into ACAC Fitness and Wellness, which operates on a larger format with high-end amenities. Their approach to inclusiveness, medical programs, physician referrals, and partnerships with doctors and hospitals sets them apart. The emphasis on tracking member outcomes and offering first-class service above their middle-market price point further highlights their differentiation. 4. Health and Fitness Advocacy: The rebranding of IHRSA as the Health and Fitness Association underscores a new focus on political advocacy, education, and research. Project 435, for example, aims to have a club captain advocating for health clubs in each of the 435 congressional districts, showcasing the importance of grassroots advocacy within the sector. 5. Challenges and Benefits of Health Insurance Integration: The podcast also shed light on the integration of health insurance with fitness clubs, particularly the challenges around eligibility verification, member management, and reconciliation. Software platforms like Welld Health play a critical role in reducing rejection rates and bad data, ultimately saving significant revenue for clubs. The ability to run long-term medical programs via partnerships with YMCA's and medical centers further illustrates the evolving landscape of preventative healthcare coverage. Where can artists be seen as cultural workers and offer other humans much needed creative engagement? The intersection of Arts and Health. In 2017, we founded Stories Love Music (501c3) and integrated our deep relationship with music into a program (The Joy of Creative Engagement), for caregivers and those living with dementia. The United States does have some exciting organizations that are diving into this world of Neuro-Arts, the creative arts meeting the challenges in neurodegenerative diseases. And when we hear of artists doing this kind of awesome work in other countries, we have to talk to them! Our latest guest is Liz Clark, an Ireland-based singer, songwriter, performer, and musician. Liz has recorded 5 full length studio albums of original songs. She has performed and collaborated throughout the US and Europe working solo engagements as well as alongside the likes of Sarah Maclachlan, Emmylou Harris, The Counting Crows and more. Over the past ten years she has been working extensively in the Arts and Health context in which she developed a collaborative approach to the songwriting process in healthcare settings across West Cork. As part of the Arts For Health Partnership Programme, she developed The Starling Song Project which preserves stories and heritage from older participants with dementia, in the form of song and songwriting. From this work, she developed The Starling Band, involving other singers and instrumentalists to showcase this music in a wider context outside of the hospitals. Liz is also the leader of a community choir and choirs for the wellbeing of staff. Music and Lyrics in this episode written and perfomed by James Harrell and Ilyana Kadushin.

In this episode of Flanigan's Eco-Logic, Ted speaks with Captain Liz Clark, surfer, sailor, environmentalist and author of Swell, a memoir published by Patagonia, chronicling her voyage sailing 20,000 nautical miles of ocean. The book shares tales of sailing in high seas, of solitude and surprises, but also of hardship and difficulties she faced both within herself and in the outside world, ultimately finding a connection to the earth and commitment to living in harmony with it. Liz and Ted discuss her background, growing up in San Diego on the water. Her father was an avid sailor, taking their family on a 5,000-mile, 6-month cruise in Mexico on their sailboat. At fifteen, her love of the ocean and natural athletic inclination led her to try surfing, and eventually started competing, surfing in private contests and for the UCSB surf team while studying at UC Santa Barbara.Liz enjoyed the exploratory part of surfing, looking for remote waves, and has since spent the last 9 years exploring the Pacific, searching for and surfing numerous incredible reef passes as well as working on local environmental projects and presenting talks in schools across Polynesia to raise awareness of pollution and conservation issues. Her aim is not only to promote environmental awareness in the places that she visits, but also to do so on a larger scale by documenting her voyage and sharing it through her writing and photography in the hope that it will inspire others to live out their passions and connect with both themselves and the planet. Liz is now based in French Polynesia, where she started writing Swell, and has dropped the hook more permanently in Tahiti with her partner to expand her activism work, resulting in the creation of A Ti'a Matairea, a non-profit organization in French Polynesia working for environmental protection, animal welfare, and youth empowerment. There is more sailing in her future, but for now, she is enjoying giving back to the planet and learning how to positively impact local environmental issues.
Chris Craytor's journey with IHRSA, now formally known as the Health and Fitness Association, is a story of transformation and strategic development. When Craytor first joined the board, he was immediately faced with the challenge of fundraising for advocacy—a task that was met with more rejections than approvals. Despite the difficulty in securing even modest contributions, his determination did not wane. Recognizing the newly imperative need for advocacy given what happened to fitness clubs nationwide during COVID, Craytor was instrumental in making a pivotal decision. He championed the hiring of seasoned political veteran, Liz Clark as CEO, a strategic move that was aimed at bolstering the organization's commitment to advocacy. Under this new leadership, the team's vision for the association began to crystallize, expanding its foundational pillars to include not only advocacy but also education and research. Today, thanks to the tenacity and forward-thinking approach of leaders like Clark and Craytor, the Health and Fitness Association is poised as a multifaceted entity dedicated to the betterment of the industry it serves. As exciting things continue to happen on the healthcare side, Craytor states, "This industry has been waiting for preventative health care to get covered for a long time. What we're seeing out there is programs and services being covered by payers that typically haven't been from those types of groups that are typically not losing their customers." Key themes discussed Encouraging member participation in fundraising. Creating inclusive community-driven health club with programs. Clubs managing referrals and effectively onboarding new members. Health insurance industry expanding coverage to prevention. Clubs benefit from streamlining and profit maximization. A few key takeaways: 1. Chris details the success of WELLD in connecting health clubs with healthcare payers, allowing clubs to tap into insurance-based programs, such as those through Medicare Advantage. These memberships are growing at a rapid pace and offer significant financial potential to health clubs that can manage the complexities involved in administering these programs. 2. WELLD's platform has shown impressive results in reducing rejection rates for claims, with one large client reducing their rates to 0.12%, significantly minimizing revenue loss. This exemplifies the importance of efficient data management and processing in health club operations. 3. Craytor sheds light on the comprehensive onboarding process and the diverse amenities that modern health clubs offer. From employing nurses for health assessments to providing a range of physical activities and amenities like aquatics, spas, and racquet sports, clubs are becoming more inclusive and health-focused. 4. Chris and Pete also cover the shift towards more preventative health care measures, especially covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and retiree plans, reflecting a broader trend in the industry. This evolution requires health clubs to adapt, offering more health and wellness programs that align with these preventive health initiatives. 5. The transformation of IHRSA into the Health and Fitness Association (HFA) and the creation of advocacy groups highlight the industry's stronger focus on advocacy, education, and research. The discussion encapsulates challenges such as consensus-building within the industry for advocacy efforts and the difficulty in securing legislative support for initiatives like getting HSA and FSA dollars to cover health club memberships. Where do things stand for higher education as the Biden Administration attempts to govern with a now divided congress? What would a U.S. debt default – or a political deal – entail for institutions? Will the U.S. Supreme Court's judgments on student debt relief and the use of affirmative action practices in the admissions process have a significant impact on the sector? This week on NACUBO In Brief, members of the NACUBO federal affairs team – Bryan Dickson, Ashley Jackson, and Liz Clark – discuss what's going on in the nation's capital, including recent regulatory initiatives at the Department of Education.

Captain Liz Clark is from Point Loma, and learned to surf and sail here before going to college at UC Santa Barbara and setting out on a 12-year sea voyage, sailing around the world mostly by herself. She chronicled her adventures in "Swell," a memoir published by Patagonia in 2018. The book captures the beauty of her travels, but also hardship and difficulties she faced both within herself and in the outside world. Captain Liz lives in Tahiti now where she runs her own environmental non-profit. She joined me from beneath a thatched roof on her new property, where the sun was shining and birds were singing. You can hear some of that in the interview. Here's our conversation.

Sometimes you need to pump the brakes and focus on finding contentment with what you have. That's what the aesthetic of cottagecore is all about. Cottagecore is an aesthetic characterized as a romanticized version of old-fashioned rural living. Think of the village in the opening of Beauty and the Beast. It's a comfy-cozy aesthetic that focuses on rustic handmade items and harkens back to a simpler time before industrialization took hold of the world. Back when people still lived in hand-crafted cottages. “Cottagecore is kind of about contentment. You know the world is really fast, and the world is very much telling us, ‘You've got to have more, you need to be more, do more, faster, like you are not enough,'” said Beth Clark, a volunteer with NBC Historical Park. "Cottagecore is more about contentment saying, ‘You know what, I've got a good loaf of bread, I've got a cup of cocoa, I've got a book to read, I've got a candle, I have people that I love,' and it's more about slowing down and appreciating what you have around you.” You could think of cottagecore as a mix of a renaissance fair with a “Little House on the Prairie” twist. Cottagecore, like renaissance fairs, also incorporates elements of fantasy through different subgenres. “It's super diverse as far as who is interested in it. You have dark cottagecore, you have subgenres like grandmacore, goblincore, and fairycore. It's really all over the place,” said Liz Clark, Beth's daughter who is also a major volunteer for the event. The event will host short arts and crafts classes and even opportunities to get your photo taken in the cottagecore environment. The event is this weekend, June 11. You can view the itinerary and purchase tickets for $8 here: https://nbchistoricalpark.com/booking/

Captain Liz Clark has sailed over 20,000 miles on her sailboat, Swell. She grew up sailing in San Diego, and cruised the coast of Mexico with her family at age 9. If overcoming adversity makes us stronger, Liz Clark is superhuman. In 2005, Liz left California's Santa Barbara harbor aboard SWELL, her 40' sailboat in search of remote surf breaks from Mexico through Central America, Galapagos, French Polynesia and beyond. Every surfer's dream, right? Well, this transoceanic wave hunt was an invite for adversity with the navigational, mechanical, gnarly weather and forecasting challenges, injuries, and illnesses. Add to that the cross cultural and gender barriers when entering foreign countries as a female solo-sailing captain. In her book - "Swell – A Sailing Surfer's Voyage of Awakening", she goes well beyond what we can cover in this episode. I feel so fortunate to have reached her for this interview and I'm excited to share our discussion with you.
Catherine is here today with Liz Clark. When Liz was nine, her family spent seven months sailing down Mexico's Pacific Coast. After returning to land life in San Diego, she dreamed of one day seeing the world by sailboat. While earning her BA in Environmental Studies, she fell in love with surfing. After college, she serendipitously met a mentor who helped her acquire a sailboat. Liz left California at 25 years old as captain of her 40-ft sailboat, Swell, in 2006, and has sailed over 20,000 nautical miles in the Pacific exploring for remote waves to surf, learning from new cultures, seeking truth, living simply from the sea, and promoting environmental causes. She kept her nomadic lifestyle going through writing, blogging, photography, representing conscious brands, and earning recognition as a surf adventurer, environmental activist, and captain. In 2015, she was nominated by National Geographic for Adventurer of the Year. Her recently released memoir, Swell: A Sailing Surfer's Voyage of Awakening, details both her inner and outer journeys over the last decade. She hopes to inspire people to live their passions and reconnect with nature and our inherent Oneness. She is now based in Tahiti, taking a break from sailing to focus her energy on environmental and animal welfare activism, working with Changing Tides Foundation in the US, and A Ti'a Matairea in Tahiti.
