North Shore (1987)

Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

"North Shore," released in 1987, is a film that encapsulates the essence of surfing culture and the timeless quest for belonging and self-discovery. Set against the stunning backdrop of Hawaii's legendary North Shore, the movie follows the journey of Rick Kane (played by Matt Adler), a young surfer from Arizona, as he navigates the challenging waves and complex social dynamics of the surfing world. The film opens in the arid deserts of Arizona, a stark contrast to the lush landscapes of Hawaii. Rick Kane, fresh from winning a local surfing contest in a wave pool, decides to use his prize money to travel to the North Shore of Oahu, the mecca of surfing. His naivety and landlocked upbringing are immediately apparent upon his arrival, making him an easy target for local surfers who view him as an outsider. One of the film's strengths lies in its portrayal of the clash between local and outsider cultures, a theme still relevant today. The tension between respecting local customs and the universal passion for surfing is a central conflict in the movie. This is exemplified in the interactions between Rick and the local surfers, particularly with the character of Vince (played by Gerry Lopez), a respected surfer who embodies the spirit and skill of the local surfing community. The cinematography of "North Shore" is another highlight, capturing the raw beauty and power of the ocean. The surfing scenes are shot with an authenticity that appeals to both surfers and non-surfers alike. These scenes are not just visually stunning; they are pivotal in advancing the narrative, showcasing Rick's progression from a naive wave pool surfer to a skilled ocean surfer. However, the film is not without its flaws. The script sometimes lapses into clichés, and the acting, particularly in the more dramatic scenes, can feel forced. The character development, especially for the supporting cast, is often surface-level, missing opportunities to delve deeper into their backstories and motivations.Despite these shortcomings, "North Shore" benefits immensely from its supporting characters. Turtle, played by John Philbin, is a standout, providing comic relief and a sense of grounded wisdom. His friendship with Rick serves as a bridge between the outsider and the local community, illustrating the universal language of surfing. Furthermore, the romantic subplot between Rick and Kiani (played by Nia Peeples) adds an extra layer to the story, although it follows a predictable trajectory. The film also touches on the commercialization of surfing, a prescient issue in the surfing community. The character of Chandler, portrayed by Gregory Harrison, embodies the soul surfer who rejects the commercial aspects of the sport. His mentorship of Rick is central to the film's message about the purity of surfing and the importance of respecting the ocean and local traditions."North Shore" culminates in the final surfing competition, a well-executed sequence that blends real surfing footage with the film's narrative. This climax not only serves as a test of Rick's skills but also as a resolution to the cultural tensions depicted throughout the movie. The competition scenes are gripping and well-choreographed, keeping viewers engaged until the very end.In terms of cultural impact, "North Shore" has become a cult classic among surfers. It captures a particular moment in surfing history, just before the sport exploded into mainstream consciousness. The film's depiction of surfing culture, with its emphasis on respect, skill, and connection to nature, resonates with many in the surfing community. In conclusion, "North Shore" is a film that, despite its flaws, remains an important cultural artifact within the surfing world. Its depiction of the surfing lifestyle, combined with the beautiful cinematography and engaging surfing sequences, makes it a must-watch for enthusiasts of the sport. While it may not delve deeply into character development or avoid certain clichés, its core message about respect, passion, and self-discovery transcends these limitations, making it a memorable and influential film in the genre of sports cinema. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

ROI’s Into the Corner Office Podcast: Powerhouse Middle Market CEOs Telling it Real—Unexpected Career Conversations

Tim Bessell loves his job. He combines lifelong surfing experience with expert craftsmanship to create some of the best custom surfboards in the world. Surfboard shapers and surfers alike, from all over the world, know the name, Tim Bessell. From world-class professionals to weekend warriors, ask anyone who knows him and they'll tell you the same thing: Tim is more than a shaper, he's an artist. History of Bessell Surfboards At a very young age, Tim Bessell was exposed to the infectious world of art by his mother. As A result, Tim gained an interest and appreciation for the sub-culture that would coincidentally influence and shape his future to come. Tim began his professional surfboard shaping career when he began working at Sunset Surfboards. By the age of thirteen, Tim began shaping surfboards from the beautiful town known as La Jolla, California. He was one of the youngest surfboard shapers in the industry, but he was already making a name for himself as a surfer and as a shaper in and around his home break of Windansea Beach in La Jolla, California. A Surfboard Shapers Journey Three years later Tim moved to Hawaii to prove he has what it takes to be a shaper on the North Shore. He began shaping custom surfboards for Lightning Bolt, one of Hawaii's premier surfboard manufacturers known for the infamous lightning gun shape of the 70's ridden by legendary Gerry Lopez. In fact, Tim Bessell would later become one of the few shapers allowed to manufacture surfboards under the Lightning Bolt name. After legitimizing himself as a shaper, Tim returned to San Diego, California to open Bessell Surfboards. By 1987, Bessell Surfboards had grown into one of the largest surfboard manufacturers in Southern California. Tim also made a name for himself as an artist, with exhibitions as far away as Japan. Tim branched off into the world of apparel when he started his own clothing line in 1992. He designed every item himself, and his unique touch of style was an instant hit. Tim even helped design styles for other clothing companies such as Hurley, T&C Hawaii, and Billabong. In 1997 Tim decided to focus once again on surfboards when he returned to the shaping room to reinvent Bessell Surfboards. He built primarily custom-shaped boards for surfers who demanded more than the typical cookie-cutter shapes typically offer. Tim's willingness to work individually with each customer has helped build a reputation few surfboard shapers can match. To date, Tim has produced over 46,000 surfboards. His boards have graced the covers of Surfer Magazine, Surfing Magazine, Beach Culture, and countless other surfing magazines. Many world-class surfers have ridden Bessell Surfboards including Peter King, Luke Egan, Jon Roseman, Glen Winton, Brad Gerlach, Vetea David, Ricky Irons, David MacAulay, Saxon Boucher, Debbie Melville Beacham, Ryder Mackey, Chris O'Rourke, Billy Choe, Simon Law, Juston Postin, David Eggers, Davie Miller, Richard Kenvin and more. Bessell Surfboards are currently sold throughout the world with distributors in Japan, South America, and Europe. If you're lucky enough to visit Tavarua Island, you'll notice Tim's trademark guns are standard equipment on the island. Wherever you end up, chances are there is someone riding a Bessell. Currently, Tim and his team at Bessell surfboards are starting many new exciting projects. These projects include Watershed Productions, a new film production company that is focusing on cutting-edge surf films. Most notably Tim Bessell has teamed up with the Warhol Foundation to reconnect the much-forgotten love that Andy Warhol had for surfing and the surfing counter-culture. “How I Met Andy”, is a short film that tells the story of how Tim met Andy Warhol and why his artistic inspiration never left him and how eventually this became the "Bessell Warhol Project.” In this project, Tim has created an extensive collection of surfboards with licensed Warhol art imposed on his signature surfboard shapes. This has created an international buzz once again and many of these boards can be found in art galleries and collector homes all over the world. With the love for shaping boards Tim gained when he was thirteen combined with the experience, inspiration, and reputation he has gained along the way, Bessell Surfboards remains one of the top custom surfboard manufacturers in the world.

The Surfer’s Journal presents Soundings with Jamie Brisick

Hawaiian stylist Gerry Lopez couldn't make a takeoff during his first time surfing Pipe in 1963 at age 13. Today, at 74, he is still widely known as Mr. Pipeline, after having devoted most of his life to the infamous patch of reef. His approach is the expression of a life lived in pursuit of stillness, mindfulness, and regard for the natural world. Sixty years after that inaugural and fateful session at “The Pipeline,” Lopez sits down to talk with show host Jamie Brisick about the importance of having a meditative state of mind in and out of the water, the moment Pipeline clicked for him, why he doesn't remember many of his waves, the relationship between yoga and surfing, and pathways to a higher consciousness.

To be honest, this is the conversation I was dreaming of for so long, since I started this podcast. So it´s still unreal for me to have had the honor to talk with the legend himself, Mr. Gerry Lopez, Mr. Pipeline - the shaper and face behind "Lighting bolt" and also a lifeong practitioner of Yoga. This man is a role model who inspired generations of Surfers and will continue to inspire generations to come not only for his approach to surfing but also his connection with nature and Spirituality. His impact on the surfing world, both as an athlete and a shaper, has made him an influential figure and an iconic legend in the sport. Thanks to Gerry, Lenni from Patagonia and Andi from the Blue Surfmagazine for having made this possible

Love Your Expat Life
Episode 86: Use These 4 Stages of Change to Avoid Stressful Transitions

Love Your Expat Life

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 5, 2023 16:30

A few days ago, my family & I watched a brilliant documentary about Gerry Lopez, a world-famous surfer, and traveler. Gerry's life journey is inspirational, and as I watched the documentary, I couldn't help but think about the changes he made in order to achieve such mastery in surfing.   He tells the story of how he transformed and kept transforming. He's well into his 70's but still embodies change day in & day out. As I watched this documentary I was paying attention to the changes he made to acquire such surfing mastery.   In this episode, we will discuss the four stages of change, which is a topic that is central to the "Love Your Expat Life" podcast.    Change is something we're used to as global nomads. Yet it can be difficult and even stressful for some people, as it often involves leaving behind the familiar and facing the unknown. But, change is inevitable whether or not we move around the world. In fact, I would argue that change is necessary for personal growth and evolution.    Like a surfer who chooses which waves to ride, we can choose the changes that are right for us and that align with our goals and values. Sometimes we may fall, and we learn from trying. This is why I believe that embracing change rather than simply resisting and reacting to it is always a better option. The steps mentioned in this episode are the foundation of the coaching program that I offer, which is designed to help you become aware of the changes you wish to make, observe and understand your current thought patterns that create your current habits and the results you see in your life, try new approaches, and practice deliberately, intentionally in order to create lasting change.    The program also includes a system of support, accountability, and guidance to help you stay committed to the process and make progress toward your goals. If you are curious about it and if you are ready to take your dreams and aspirations seriously, join the waiting list here. The program opens its doors at the end of the month and you can be the first one to know about it!   Resources: Episode 84: My Anti-Resolution Strategy to Achieve Your Goals The Ying & the Yang of Gerry Lopez Documentary Unlock Your Full Potential Group Goaching waitlist

We are heartbroken to hear about the death of Art Brewer. We just lost a true icon of surf photograph. Art Brewer's archive of surf photos from the 70's, 80's and 90s contain countless iconic images that helped to visually define the entire sport of surfing. We had the pleasure of sitting down to chat with Art last year. This week we pay tribute to this titan of surf photography with a special re-release of our conversation. Art sheds some light on the state of modern photography, how some photos take on a new meaning with age, and why Bunker Spreckels tried to shoot him in South Africa. Thank you Art for the countless classic images. Rest in Peace, Art.
