Welcome to Art is Awesome, the show where we talk with an artist or art worker with a connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. This episode of "Art is Awesome" features painter Luis Felipe Chavez, who discusses his journey from a small town in Mexico to exhibiting his work in San Francisco. Emily explores Luis's background, his inspiration from Mexican muralism, and his experience navigating life and art between two countries. The conversation covers his solo exhibition "Intermedial," which juxtaposes places and architecture from Mexico and the United States, reflecting on themes of migration, identity, and cultural overlap. Luis shares personal stories about his artistic development, the impact of winning a drawing contest as a teenager, and the influence of artists like Jose Clemente Orozco. About Artist Luis Felipe Chavez :Luis Felipe Chavez is a queer artist originally from a small town in central-western Mexico. His artistic journey began at the age of fourteen with drawing and painting classes in Guadalajara, Jalisco. From 2015 to 2020, Chavez pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Visual Arts at the University of Guadalajara. Each summer during those years, he traveled to the U.S. to visit his family—spending time working alongside his father and brother in the agricultural fields of Bakersfield, California, and in factories in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2020, amid a global atmosphere of uncertainty and loss, Chavez completed his degree and began developing a new body of work. Later that year, driven by a desire for change despite limited English and lingering fears, he packed a few clothes and some paintings into a suitcase and moved to California.By the end of 2021, Chavez relocated to San Francisco, where he continues to live and work. Working primarily with traditional drawing and painting techniques, his art explores themes of migration, labor, identity, and belonging through a queer, cross-cultural lens.Visit Luis' Website: LuisFelipeStudio.ComFollow Luis on Instagram: @LuisFelipeStudioMore on Luis' exhibit "INTERMEDIO" at Jonathon Carver Moore CLICK HERE. --About Podcast Host Emily Wilson:Emily a writer in San Francisco, with work in outlets including Hyperallergic, Artforum, 48 Hills, the Daily Beast, California Magazine, Latino USA, and Women's Media Center. Rodrigo Medellin loves bats. The Mexican conservationist has been obsessed with the often maligned creatures for over six decades. As a child, he kept blood in ice cube trays in his parents' freezer, to feed to his pet vampire bats. He went on to create Mexico City's first ever bat festival, and to work with governments, universities, NGOs and researchers all over the world. To many, Rodrigo IS the "bat man."Like many Mexicans, he is also fiercely proud of the country's native spirits: tequila and mezcal. The agave spirits are hugely important for Mexico's economy, especially in the states of Jalisco and Oaxaca. Exports of the drinks are worth billions. Tequila and mezcal have become increasingly popular in recent decades, with sales boosted by big budget celebrity-owned brands designed to appeal to the US consumer. From Kendall Jenner to George Clooney, US celebrities have been riding high on the mass market appeal of the liquor. But the boom in these industries has had unintended consequences for Rodrigo's beloved bats. Often the agave the spirits are made from is harvested early, before the slow-growing plant can flower. This means bats cannot feed from the nectar, and critically, they can't do their job as pollinators. This contributes to agave monocultures which are susceptible to disease and blight. Rodrigo explains how he wanted to change the way the industry works, creating a “bat-friendly” certification for tequila and mezcal producers who leave 5% of the agave untouched, to bloom. But why have so few brands been certified, why is the programme controversial for some producers, and why are bats a tricky sell as far as conservation for many people and communities? Sarah Treanor spends time with Rodrigo in Mexico City and Oaxaca to find out. A Bespoken Media production. Image: Rodrigo Medellin holding a bat (Credit: Paul Webala)

Patti and Pottymouth will never forget “the screamable baseball game,” which you may know alternatively as the 30th anniversary of Cal Ripken, Jr. breaking Lou Gehrig's record for consecutive games, Yamamoto's nearly no-no, or the craziest comeback in the history of the Orioles. We celebrated the importance of showing up every day no matter the challenges. We celebrated a friend to labor, a dad who started the biggest day of his professional life by taking his daughter to her first day of school, and the ballplayer who understood that connecting with fans may be the most important part of the job. We also chanted “Eddie! Eddie!” with cans of Steady Eddie in our hands. We then watched Yoshinobou Yamamoto pitch the game of his life, and that legacy kid Jackson Holliday break it up with a big swing and a smile.Other baseball things happened too – we ponder what life is like this week for the Phillies fan who berated another Phillies fan at loanDepot Park until he gave up the Harrison Bader home run ball he had retrieved and given to his birthday boy son. DBacks pitching comes back for Pottymouth but is it too little, too late? And the Butler did it. As we do like to lean into a theme, the Serie del Tequila played right into our shot glass clutching hands. Charros del Jalisco may find a home in our NCiB hearts as we learn that both tequila and mariachi come from Jalisco. We say, “my boyfriend is not the perpetrator," “I was yelling, it's not a symptom,” and “Ergo, Tequila.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. ¿Te atreves a escuchar? —

Mexican authorities have raised alarms over the increasing recruitment of ex-Colombian soldiers by both the Sinaloa Cartel and Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG). At least nine former Colombian military personnel were arrested for their involvement in a deadly antipersonnel mine attack in Michoacán, with additional cases involving participation in drone bomb assaults. This marks a troubling militarization of cartel operations, as these cartels tap into Colombia's pool of combat-trained recruits to enhance their firepower and operational capabilities. Mexican officials have responded by denying entry to dozens of Colombians, even as diplomatic concerns grow amid ongoing cooperation efforts between the two countries.Additionally, investigative reporting reveals that ex-Colombian soldiers are being recruited as mercenaries in states like Michoacán, Jalisco, and Guanajuato—often with logistical support disguised as tourism. These combat-hardened individuals are employed by CJNG and allied groups (e.g., Los Viagras) to conduct sophisticated operations including managing drones, handling explosives, and deploying landmines. Their presence has notably intensified violence in areas like La Ruana, plunging communities into fear and instability. Authorities have pressed Colombia for increased cooperation, although responses remain limited so far.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsoruce;Así fue como el Cártel de Sinaloa y el CJNG expandieron su control en Colombia, según NarcoFiles - Infobae
