The result in his disobeying was that it detrimentally put everybody else's lives in jeopardy and great risk. In a moment of reflecting on this I considered that obedience most always has to do with more than just one person who obeys or disobeys. No man or woman is an island. Our acts of disobedience can and will directly affect and impact other lives. Sometimes very badly. God will not force a person to obey, but will allow their unruly acts of defiance that cause hurt to others, to in turn hurt the disobey-er.The mariners on the ship found out it was Jonah which explained the "great tempest." Disobedience will at times bring a great tempest to others lives. There is much more depth in understanding that singular acts of obedience have powerful outcomes in lives for the wonderful good. Else while acts of disobedience can bring harm to the innocent people around us.Make sure that when you know the Lord wants you to obey Him in any matter great or small, make sure you consider the consequences. Remember, obedience is surrender to God's loving will which only brings about the "goodness of God that endureth continually." Psalm 52:1. You can rely on it.“Love for God is obedience; love for God is holiness. To love God and to love man is to be conformed to the image of Christ, and this is salvation.”― Charles H. Colossians 1:1-8 Faith in Christ Love of the Saints Heaven Focused Hope Fruitfulness Teachable Spirit Spirit Centered Love More to Consider Going to church doesnt make you a Christian any more than going to a garage makes you an automobile. Billy Sunday Jesus's resurrection is the beginning of God's new project not to snatch people away from earth to heaven but to colonize earth with the life of heaven. That, after all, is what the Lord's Prayer is about. N.T. Wright Some want to live within the sound of church or chapel bell. I want to run a rescue shop, within a yard of hell. C.T. Studd When you go to church you are really listening-in to the secret wireless from our friends: that is why the enemy is so anxious to prevent us from going. He does it by playing on our conceit and laziness and intellectual snobbery. C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity We shall, as we ripen in grace, have greater sweetness towards our fellow Christians. Bitter-spirited Christians may know a great deal, but they are immature. Those who are quick to censure may be very acute in judgment, but they are as yet very immature in heart. He who grows in grace remembers that he is but dust, and he therefore does not expect his fellow Christians to be anything more; he overlooks ten thousand of their faults, because he knows his God overlooks twenty thousand in his own case. He does not expect perfection in the creature, and, therefore, he is not disappointed when he does not find it. ... I know we who are young beginners in grace think ourselves qualified to reform the whole Christian church. We drag her before us, and condemn her straightway; but when our virtues become more mature, I trust we shall not be more tolerant of evil, but we shall be more tolerant of infirmity, more hopeful for the people of God, and certainly less arrogant in our criticisms.Charles H. Broadcasts – Christian Working Woman

Presented by Lauren Stibgen I love to learn. In fact, learning is one of the things I do best. Relying on God's Word as my guide in all aspects of my life means that, as a Christ follower I should always be discerning about the world's advice no matter how good it seems! With the Bible as my guide, I am always keen to get advice about things in business! Don't get me wrong, there are many experts I trust who are not believers in Jesus Christ, but when it comes to something truly personal, like the term inner peace, my guard comes up. What is inner peace? For sake of ease, let's go with the Wikipedia version—a deliberate state of psychological or spiritual calm despite the potential presence of stressors. There are many more technical versions of this definition from research articles, but all of them seem to reference the same spiritual calm and religious aspect of this sometimes-elusive state of being. Some of the other words and phrases associated with inner peace are: Tranquility of mind No sufferings or mental disturbances like worry or anxiety, greed, hatred, ill-will To keep strong in the state of stress[1] Luke 12:15 warns: Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions. 1 Timothy 6:10a: For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. 1 John 2:9 exhorts: Anyone that claims to be I the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. Proverbs 10:12: Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers all wrongs. Here's what our culture gets right. Inner peace is, in fact, spiritual. For those of us who have accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we know Jesus is that peace. I also find it interesting that some of the words above greed, hatred, and ill-will are exactly the things we, as Christ followers are commanded not to do. In fact, they are considered sinful. In the verses above, the Bible tells us we should guard against greed; it is the root of all kinds of evil. Hatred of another person means you are still in darkness, and it stirs up conflict. None of this sounds peaceful to me. Now, since so many people are seeking this inner peace, how do we get it? Out of three separate articles I read, the top three reoccurring ways to “find inner peace” include: meditation, nature, and practicing gratitude. First, what is meditation. We hear about this a lot. Books, apps, and classes tout meditation as a way to reduce anxiety and get better sleep. Most of these resources use reflective thinking, some breathing exercises, and practices to help declutter your mind and be present in the moment. We can already see the issue of this for those of us who follow Jesus Christ. This method is devoid of a Savior who is our peace. The Bible does suggest meditation. In Joshua 1:8 we read, Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. We are also instructed to meditate on God's unfailing love, on his work and mighty deeds, on his precepts and ways, and on his promises. All these instructions are found in the Psalms. So, the world tells you to declutter and clear your mind, but when you stop meditation, what creeps right back in? You guessed it—the same things that were there before! The difference with God's instruction about meditation is clear. You are to think about his laws, his unfailing love, his ways, and his promises. This is peaceful. The verse in Joshua also tells us to do this day and night which highlights the importance of the frequency of filling our mind with the Word and the wonderful ways of the Lord! So, how can you do this? I suggest several things. First, start and end your day in the Word of the Lord. There is a wonderful devotional by Charles H. Spurgeon titled Morning and Evening that offers a devotional—you guessed it—in the morning and evening...

Luke 1:36-45 - Finding Genuine Joy

Pastor Mike Impact Ministries

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 16, 2024 5:12

In Luke 1:36-38, the angel Gabriel ended his message by giving Mary a word of encouragement. He told Mary that her aged relative Elizabeth was with child, proving that "with God nothing shall be impossible." God gave a similar word to Abraham when He announced the birth of Isaac (Genesis 18:14). That our God can do anything is the witness of many, including Job (Job 42:2), Jeremiah (Jer. 32:17), and even our Lord Jesus (Matt. 19:26).   Mary's believing response was to surrender herself to God as His willing servant. She experienced the grace of God (Luke 1:30) and believed the Word of God, and therefore she could be used by the Spirit to accomplish the will of God. A "handmaid" was the lowest kind of female servant, which shows how much Mary trusted God. She belonged totally to the Lord, body (Luke 1:38), soul (Luke 1:46), and spirit (Luke 1:47). What an example for us to follow! (Romans 12:1-2)   Now in Luke 1:39-56, we find that “Joy” is the major theme of this section as we see three persons rejoicing in the Lord. Now that Mary knew she was to become a mother, and that her kinswoman Elizabeth would give birth in three months, she wanted to see Elizabeth so they could rejoice together.   First, we see the joy of Elizabeth (vv. 39-45). As Mary entered the house, Elizabeth heard her greeting, was filled with the Spirit, and was told by the Lord why Mary was there. The one word that filled her lips was "blessed." Note that she did not say that Mary was blessed above women but among women, and certainly this is true. While we don't want to ascribe to Mary that which only belongs to God, neither do we want to minimize her place in the plan of God.   The thing that Elizabeth emphasized was Mary's faith: "Blessed is she that believed" (Luke 1:45). We are saved "by grace ... through faith" (Eph. 2:8-9). Because Mary believed the Word of God, she experienced the power of God.   Today we live in a world where we are being overwhelmed with information, most of which is very discouraging. On top of that, we are being broken apart by our own personal problems in our families, our workplaces, our finances, and our relationships. We need a major input of “Good News”! Like Mary we need to be assured that we have a God that gives us wonderful promises and then has the power to keep them.   I want to recommend a small devotional book by Charles Spurgeon called “Faith's Checkbook”. Charles H. Spurgeon supplies daily deposits of God's promises into the reader's personal bank of faith. He urges the reader to view each Bible promise as a check written by God, which can be cashed by personally endorsing it and receiving the gift it represents! He reminds us of 365 promises God made to us that He will fulfill if we only by faith believer!   My friend, happiness is based on present circumstances or “happenings” in our lives. Genuine joy is based on an awareness of the presence of the Lord through the working of the Holy Spirit applying God's Word and His Truth in our minds and hearts.   These verses assure us that we can have the same joy Jesus had! John 15:11, “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.” John 16:24, “Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” John 17:13, “But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves.”   God bless!

Today, Stasi invites us to journey with her as she unpacks one of her favorite psalms, Psalm 103, which reminds us of all the ways God has moved in our lives and continues to do so. This beautiful psalm instructs our souls to praise the Lord by reminding us of the splendor, majesty, and goodness of God. Turning our hearts' attention to our holy God naturally evokes worship from our inmost being. Stasi concludes with a guided time together, focusing on quieting our souls to praise God for the abundant blessings and love he showers upon us.…..SHOW NOTES:…..VERSES: Psalm 103 — In its entiretyExodus 3:14 (NLT)  — God replied to Moses, “I am who I am. Say this to the people of Israel: I am has sent me to you.”Proverbs 11:30 (NLT)  — The seeds of good deeds become a tree of life; a wise person wins friends.Psalm 16:9-10 (NLT)  — No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety. For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your holy one to rot in the grave.Ezekiel 18:4 (ASV)  — Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.Acts 2:41 (NLT)  — Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.Revelation 18:13 (ASV)  — and cinnamon, and spice, and incense, and ointment, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and cattle, and sheep; and merchandise of horses and chariots and slaves; and souls of men.Jeremiah 38:16 (NIV)  — But King Zedekiah swore this oath secretly to Jeremiah: “As surely as the Lord lives, who has given us breath, I will neither kill you nor hand you over to those who want to kill you.”2 Peter 2:14 (ASV)  — having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; enticing unstedfast souls; having a heart exercised in covetousness; children of cursing;James 1:21 (NLT)  — So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.Leviticus 17:11 (NLT)  — for the life of the body is in its blood. I have given you the blood on the altar to purify you, making you right with the Lord. It is the blood, given in exchange for a life, that makes purification possible.1 Peter 1:22 (NLT)  — You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters. Love each other deeply with all your heart.1 Peter 2:25 (NLT)  — Once you were like sheep who wandered away. But now you have turned to your Shepherd, the Guardian of your souls.Matthew 11:29 (NLT)  — Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.Acts 13:35–37 (NLT)  — Another psalm explains it more fully: ‘You will not allow your Holy One to rot in the grave.' This is not a reference to David, for after David had done the will of God in his own generation, he died and was buried with his ancestors, and his body decayed. No, it was a reference to someone else—someone whom God raised and whose body did not decay.Hebrews 4:12 (NLT)  — For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.John 14:1 (NLT)  — Don't let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.1 Corinthians 2:16 (NLT)  — For, “Who can know the Lord's thoughts? Who knows enough to teach him?” But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ.Colossians 3:2 (NLT)  — Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.Philippians 4:8 (NLT)  — And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.Romans 8:11 (NLT)  — The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.Leviticus 26:11-12 (KJV)  — And I set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you. And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.Proverbs 9:10 (NLT)  — Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom.1 John 4:18 (NLT)  — Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.…..RESOURCES:The Treasury of David – Psalm 103 by Charles H. Paul confessed, 'The life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.' (Galatians 2:20). Paul knew that Christ Jesus not only loved Paul personally, but that he had given himself on the cross to save Paul individually. Developing and extending this biblical idea, we come to understand that the Lord Jesus did not die for a 'category' of persons who, of their own free will, would appropriate salvation for themselves. No. The Lord Jesus died for real people on a personal, definite basis. He died for those whom the Father had given him (John 6:38–40). This week's two selections help us better to understand, and rejoice in, this definite atonement made for all those the Lord has appointed to salvation.   Featured Content: – For Whom Christ Died, Charles H. A mob of 300 people beat and threatened to kill a Christian couple at a police station in Karnataka State, India, after the wife was falsely accused of forced conversion, Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) said Jan. 23. And, as an evangelistic pastor, Charles H. Spurgeon felt a passion and sensed an urgency for the salvation of the lost in his city.

Klaus Baltzer, trad. Linda M. Happy Monday Meditations! The attribute of God that we'll be meditating on today will be his Righteousness.  The righteousness of God can be one of the more challenging attributes to understand, but it is truly one of the most important. It is an attribute that God alone possesses perfectly, and we, as humans by our own graces, do not. Charles H. Spurgeon has a great quote, he says "The greatest enemy to human souls is the self-righteous spirit which makes men look to themselves for salvation."It is important that you understand that righteousness is not something that God does, it is something that God is. To put it another way, righteousness is part of God's character.God counts us as righteous based only on the finished sacrifice of JesusWe hope that you enjoy this episode.
