This is the last day of April. The month of April has been national poetry month. It is interesting that a dear friend in Florida sent me in the mail an original poem she wrote on her birthday. It is such a joy to be able to share with the readers of this warm thoughts column, the gems of thought and poetry. So thanks, Sarah Gray, for her precious thoughts.Little pleasures. Oh, the joy of little pleasures tucked away in memory's treasures. Hummingbirds and butterflies, the clear blue of summer skies. Fragrant flowers wet with dew, prism colors of rainbows hue. Baby's breath, and baby's soft skin. Little drools on baby's chin. Baby smiles, and babies coos, The things that make baby book news. A pretty card with words that rhyme. The distant peal of church bells chime. Quiet time, a good book, heads that turn for a second look. Time spent together, small talk, an afternoon nap, or an afternoon walk. A smile exchanged over a cup of tea, A confidence confided just to me. A box of chocolate, a compliment, when most needed, heaven sent. The peaceful calm of a gentle breeze, I sense God's touch in all of these. A phone call, a visit from a friend, Little pleasures just never end. This past week, poetry took precedence over politics at the White House. President Clinton and First Lady, Hillary Roddam Clinton, hosted the present and two past poets laureate. The trio read from the Legacy of American Poetry. The event is a third in a series of presidential millennium evenings designed to showcase the views of scholars and artists as the century closes. Thanks again, dear readers, for sharing your warm thoughts.More warm thoughts: How beautiful a day can be when kindness touches it. Remember, the first Thursday in May is National Day of Prayer. The Wyoming left continues to push the narrative that there were "cuts" to the budget in the 2026 Budget Session.  Really, there is almost a half a billion dollar increase.  Politicians like Chi-Comm Som are using the lie that there were as a campaign issue.  Was there money moved around?  Yes, but there wasn't a cut. Interestingly, after getting schooled on this point by Rep Pendergraft, Jake in the Cow Pie continues to insist that there were cuts. As is always the case, the truth is very different than the story the Redcoats are telling. Welcome to Manga Monday! This week we're diving into The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity by Saka Mikami, a romance manga running on Magazine Pocket that is basically Romeo and Juliet if Romeo worked in a cake shop and Juliet was really, really hungry. Chidori Public High School and Kikyo Girls' Academy sit right next to each other but couldn't be more different. Chidori is full of so-called delinquent boys with terrible grades, Kikyo is a prestigious academy for wealthy young ladies, and the two schools absolutely despise each other. Rintaro Tsumugi is a Chidori student with a face that scares everyone away but a heart that's pure gold, working part time at his family's patisserie. Kaoruko Waguri is a kind, bubbly Kikyo student who walks into the shop one day and treats him like a normal person. They click instantly, and then the worst possible discovery: she's from that school. What follows is a story about two people fighting against every expectation, every prejudice, and every social wall their world puts between them. The author set out to write a manga where every character is kind, and you feel it. Over 10 million copies in circulation, a CloverWorks anime adaptation that earned universal acclaim, and not a single kiss until chapter 100. This one proves you don't need gimmicks to make a romance that absolutely devastates you.If you enjoy the show, please rate, review, like, and subscribe to Sakura Society | An Anime Appreciation Podcast — and any other podcasts you love. Dr Michelle Dickinson: nanotechnologist on scientists creating tomatoes that smell like popcorn

Imagine biting into a tomato that smells like freshly buttered popcorn. Research published in the journal KeAi showed the world's first tomato plants with a popcorn-like aroma made using gene-editing technology. The goal is part of a much bigger effort to solve one of the biggest problems in modern agriculture: why tomatoes have lost so much of their flavour. Why tomatoes don't taste like they used to If you've ever eaten a tomato straight from a garden, you probably know the difference immediately. Homegrown tomatoes are often sweet, fragrant, and intensely flavourful. Supermarket tomatoes, by comparison, can sometimes taste bland. Once removed from the vine, the fruit begins to undergo metabolic changes that slowly reduce its aroma and flavour. Long transport times and storage conditions make this even worse. Over decades, breeding tomatoes for durability, size, and shelf life has also unintentionally reduced many of the compounds responsible for flavour. Scientists around the world are now trying to bring that flavour back. The science behind the popcorn smell In the new study, researchers used the gene-editing technology CRISPR/Cas9 to modify two specific genes in tomato plants. These genes normally control how the plant processes certain chemical compounds. By switching them off, the researchers triggered the buildup of a molecule called 2-AP. This compound is famous in the food world. It's responsible for the distinctive smell of: Buttered popcorn Fragrant rice varieties like basmati and jasmine Freshly baked bread When the edited tomatoes started producing higher levels of this compound, the plants developed a distinct popcorn-like aroma. Improving flavour without hurting the plant One of the most important findings from the research is that the genetic change didn't appear to harm the plant's performance, so scientists managed to increase the tomato's aroma without reducing yield or nutritional value. The tomatoes used in the experiment were a research variety called Alisa Craig, commonly used in plant science studies. The next step will be introducing the aroma trait into commercial tomato varieties that are grown at scale. If successful, future supermarket tomatoes could have far richer aromas and more complex flavour, something that many people feel has been missing from modern produce. This research is part of a growing trend in agriculture: using gene editing not just to make crops tougher or higher yielding, but to improve the eating experience itself. Instead of choosing between flavour and productivity, scientists are increasingly finding ways to achieve both. And if that future includes tomatoes that smell like buttered popcorn, it might make the produce aisle a lot more interesting. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Send us a textFairfax criminal lawyer Jonathan Katz knows the power of a compellingly persuasive story. The elements of such a story can include setting a vivid scene, often with word pictures, a keen sense of the audience, and full engagement with the listeners. The story must not get lost in the translation. All of that lends itself well to this podcast episode's interviewee Matty Wegehaupt, who is an instructor of East Asian studies at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. Matty first came to Jon Katz's attention in his role as English translator of the great collection of the late Korean Buddhist teacher Beopjeong Sunim's writings, entitled May All Beings Be Happy. In this translation, Matty does an excellent job in conveying the words and essence of Beopjeong. With so many speakers of English as a second language in Northern Virginia, Jon Katz repeatedly represents clients whose first language is not English. When a language interpreter is needed, the right interpreter is needed, not merely someone fully bilingual in two languages, but someone who has the personal and cultural sensitivity to sufficiently convey the meaning of the speaker and to assist the testifying witness in understanding what is being asked of the witness. The interpreter must have the attention and readiness to ask a speaker to repeat what the interpreter does not sufficiently hear, while also paying sufficient attention to what is being said. Matty fully understands that. Interpreting and translating is an art, rather than some sort of robotic exercise. Listen to Matty's telling of his journey from the Air Force Academy to leaving the academy when recognizing that warfare was not for him, ultimately choosing to learn in Korea, and learning the language when doing so was with fewer resources than today. Matty talks about the greatness of Beopjeong Sunim, the lessons and ideas from Beopjeong's life and writings, Beopjeong's experience during the Korean dictatorship, and his ability to relate well with a wide range of people. Matty talks not only about the importance of not fearing death, but also not fearing life. This shedding of fear is so very important for fighting in court. Going one step further about not fearing life involves fully engaging with the people and circumstances around us, no matter how seemingly unpleasant or not, which is also essential in court. Treading one's own powerful path is also vital for trial lawyers. In that regard, Matty here talks about how he disregarded Beopjeong's wish for his writings not to continue in publication after his passing, to the point that after Beopjeong's passing, Matty translated this monk's Pure and Fragrant collection of essays. Matty's clear voice shines throughout this interview. ____This episode is also available on YouTube at https://youtu.be/Ykhyv_iCQhg.This podcast with Fairfax, Virginia criminal / DUI lawyer Jon Katz is playable on all devices at podcast.BeatTheProsecution.com. How do we practically "take every thought captive"? What does that look like in a day-to-day mental battle? When have you seen someone use their leadership position to build others up rather than tear them down? Why do we often fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to others in life (or ministry), and what exactly can shift our focus back to God's unique calling for us? What does it mean to be "betrothed to Christ"? How does that shape our daily choices and loyalties? In what ways do "false apostles" or modern spiritual distractions pull believers away from the simplicity of Christ today? How can we discern the difference between charisma that may draw larger crowds and genuine Christ-centered power in teaching today?

What do these verses teach us about the difference between suffering with Christ in us versus suffering without Him? Read verses 10–12. Why is it freeing to realize that “carrying the dying of Jesus” refers to the apostles' suffering for the gospel's sake—not a call for all Christians to die more every day? How does verse 12 make this crystal clear? Read verse 15. How do you see “grace spreading to more and more people” in your circles today? Why is gratitude always the result of genuine ministry? Read verses 16–18. Paul contrasts the “outer man” decaying with the “inner man” being renewed. What does this say about where our real hope and beauty come from? How does it help you not to lose heart?
