What does it mean to help young people carry burdens they didn't create? In this episode, Jennifer chats with Newbery Medal-winning author Tae Keller about her latest novel, When Tomorrow Burns. Together, they explore climate anxiety, online radicalization, toxic masculinity, and the pressure many young people feel to somehow fix the challenges they have inherited. Most importantly, they discuss why hope requires us to reject the idea that any one generation must carry these burdens alone and how stories can help readers imagine a more connected future. Show notes, episode transcripts and other goodies can be found here. I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me. — Leviticus 10:3 Is your worship pleasing to God? In this piercing yet refreshing series of sermons, the beloved Puritan preacher Jeremiah Burroughs calls believers to a reverent, Scripture-based approach to worship. Originally delivered during the 1600s, preserved from his pulpit notes and now in updated, modern English, Gospel Worship is a sobering reminder that drawing near to God is no frivolous matter. How we worship reveals what we believe about the God we worship. With careful exposition of Leviticus 10:3, Burroughs shows that worship must be governed by God's Word, not our inventions. He exposes the subtle dangers of “strange fire” (practices which God has not commanded) and pleads with readers to truly reverence the Lord in the ordinances: in prayer, in hearing the Word, and in the Lord's Supper. Profound, practical, and deeply convicting, Gospel Worship is both a theological treatise and a devotional aid – meant to reform our worship and rekindle our reverence for our awesome and powerful God. About the Author Jeremiah Burroughs (1599–1646) was a faithful minister of the gospel, member of the Westminster Assembly, and one of the most beloved preachers of the English Puritan era. His writings, including The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment and Gospel Revelation, continue to nourish believers with timeless, biblical wisdom.

Every great story has closing credits — and so does the book of Colossians. In Colossians 4:7-18, Paul doesn't close with a grand theological statement. He closes with names — ordinary people who carried letters, opened their homes, prayed through the night, and showed up when it wasn't easy.Tychicus, the reliable messenger. Onesimus, the runaway servant turned beloved brother. Mark, the one who failed and came back. Epaphras, who agonized in prayer for a church he loved deeply. Nympha, who opened her home so the church could gather.None of them were famous. Most of them we know almost nothing about. But together, they changed the world. The extraordinary work of the church comes from ordinary people. This is the miracle of the Gospel — it takes the useless and makes them useful. It takes the broken and makes them whole. It takes the ordinary and accomplishes the extraordinary. What role has God placed in your hands? What ministry is waiting for your full attention and effort?"Pay attention to the ministry you have received in the Lord, so that you can accomplish it." — Colossians 4:17

A Complete Exegetical Commentary on the Gospel According to Matthew “Charles H. Spurgeon had a rare insight into the Word of God and spiritual truth. He was a prophet of wonderfully clear vision. He saw beneath the letter to the spirit of divine truth. He was both an example and a proof that the days of anointed eyes and anointed tongue are not past, and that the unction from the Holy One (1 John 2:20), which confers both spiritual perception and effective utterance, was not confined to apostolic times. “This commentary on the Gospel of Matthew is the latest and ripest of his life's labors. It will be found as a tree laden with rich fruit and evidencing a soil uniquely fertile and a culture that reveals a divine husbandman. We predict for this volume a larger sale than for any of Spurgeon's previous works, partly because it is his latest and has in a sense the aroma of his dying days, and partly because it is a simple, brief, and charming memorial of the most effective popular preacher of his age. Every page is, like his sermons, full of his Master and yet sparkling with his own unique individuality. They will be found to disclose many of the secrets of his power in discerning, expounding, and applying the gospel. The reader will find himself here keeping perpetual company with one whose soul followed hard after God, and who loved the paths where his Savior had trodden before him. “May the inspiring Spirit, who guided the evangelist Matthew in the production of this narrative, become to all readers of this commentary the illuminating Spirit also; and through these pages may he who is dead still continue to speak!” - Arthur T. Pierson. Metropolitan Tabernacle, London, February, 1893 About the Author Charles Haddon (C. H.) Spurgeon (1834-1892) was a British Baptist preacher. He started preaching at age 16 and quickly became famous. He is still known as the “Prince of Preachers” and frequently had more than 10,000 people present to hear him preach at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London. His sermons were printed in newspapers, translated into many languages, and published in many books.

Not one of the good promises which the Lord had made to the house of Israel failed; all came to pass. – Joshua 21:45 Faith's Checkbook is a one-year devotional meant to encourage you to take God at His Word – to take hold of God's promises by faith. Each day you will be presented with a specific promise from the Bible, along with accompanying exhortation by Charles Spurgeon. This is your “spiritual checkbook,” if you will. God's bank account of provision is ample, and it cannot be overdrawn. Every situation you might face is equally met with a promise that, if accepted, will sufficiently see you through. “God has given no promise that He will not redeem. He does not offer hope that He will not fulfill. To help my brethren believe this, I have prepared this little volume.” – Charles H. Spurgeon

For more than two centuries, The Pilgrim's Progress has encouraged believers along the narrow way. Now, in this newly updated edition, Charles H. Spurgeon – who read Bunyan's classic more than one hundred times – walks with readers through the allegory's most memorable scenes, illuminating the spiritual truths within “that sweetest of all prose poems.” Originally delivered as Monday evening addresses and published post-posthumously by Spurgeon's son Thomas, these messages reveal Spurgeon at his pastoral best: warm, practical, biblical, and deeply earnest for the salvation and spiritual growth of his hearers. With vivid insight, he explores Christian's early companions: the Swamp of Despond, the gate of salvation, the battle with Apollyon, the dangers of Vanity Fair, and more – drawing lessons for young and seasoned travelers alike. Rich with Scripture, full of spiritual counsel, and alive with Spurgeon's unmistakable voice, Pictures from Pilgrim's Progress invites you to walk again with Christian, see yourself in Bunyan's characters, and grow in love for both the allegory and the Word of God that shaped it. A timeless help for all who seek the Celestial City. About the Author Charles Haddon (C. H.) Spurgeon (1834-1892) was a British Baptist preacher. Frey recounts his career from Canada's Communications Security Establishment to leading TELUS's internal security and managed cybersecurity services, then explains how convenience-driven identity decisions led from PKI's unrealized promise to passwords, bearer/session tokens, and today's widespread session cookie theft. He describes lessons from TELUS's deployment of FIDO2 phishing-resistant tokens, the dangers of long-lived SSO tokens across SaaS ecosystems, and how agentic "auto-browse" could amplify harm via the "lethal trifecta" and ephemeral agents with poor auditability. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. – Hebrews 4:9 In The Saints' Everlasting Rest, Baxter pulls back the curtain on eternity, unveiling the glories prepared for those who love Christ: freedom from all evil, perfection of body and soul, unbroken communion with God, and joy that no one can take away. But while heaven is the perfection of rest, a child of God may even now have Christ's perfect peace and rest, no matter how difficult the circumstances of life may seem. With the urgency of one who experienced near death himself, Baxter pleads with his readers to take God in Christ for your only rest and to make heaven the goal and delight of every day. His stirring words – rich with Scripture, solemn warnings, and radiant hope – have led many to turn from the empty promises of this world and fix their hearts on the incorruptible inheritance kept in heaven. This edition of Baxter's signature work has been painstakingly updated, while still preserving his clarion call to live now in the delightful foretastes of heaven and to persevere until faith becomes sight and joy becomes everlasting. About the Author Richard Baxter (1615–1691) preached “as a dying man to dying men.” He was devoted to God and was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. Best known as the minister of Kidderminster in England, his love for God and others resulted in practically the entire town of Kidderminster turning to Jesus during Baxter's ministry there. Richard Baxter desired unity among Christians, which often resulted in opposition from those who held to church loyalty or theological views rather than to Christ and God's Word. Baxter had his share of persecution, even being imprisoned on several occasions.

A spiritual and saving knowledge of God is the greatest need of every human creature. The foundation of all true knowledge of God must be a clear understanding of His attributes as revealed in Holy Scripture. An unknown God cannot be truly trusted, served, nor worshipped. In this book, an effort has been made to describe some of the principal perfections of His divine character. And if we are to truly profit from our perusal of the pages herein, we need to earnestly ask God to bless them to us, to apply His Truth to our conscience and heart, so that, by it, our lives will be transformed. We need something more than a theoretical knowledge of God. God is only truly known in the soul inasmuch as we yield ourselves to Him, submit to His authority, and regulate all the details of our lives by His holy precepts and commandments. Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord (Hosea 6:3). If any man will do His will, he shall know (John 7:17). The people that do know their God shall be strong (Daniel 11:32). About the Author Arthur Walkington Pink (1886-1952) was an influential British Christian evangelist and biblical scholar known for his profound writings and teachings on Reformed theology. Born in Nottingham, England, Pink converted to Christianity in his early twenties, and lived a life devoted to the Lord. His passion for Scripture led him to pastorates in the United States and Australia, though he is best remembered for his prolific writing. Pink's works, including The Sovereignty of God and numerous articles in his monthly magazine, Studies in the Scriptures, have had a lasting impact in the body of Christ.

Another Spooky Season (ahhhhhh) has come and gone, friends and FoGgers. In the grand tradition we've developed these past few years, we offer you a coda on our Final Destination franchise run by looking back on some of our favorite thematic observations throughout the discussions, ranking each of the films in the franchise, selecting our most "Ain't Right" moments across all six films, and -- of course -- the moment you've all been waiting for: the official Mack Daddy Kills Hall of Fame for the FINAL DESTINATION franchise. The next couple of months will be rather unconventional programming as we wind down the year, including more interviews, some complete conversations, and a couple other surprises. But we will be back in January with a whole new slate of FoGgy episodes, because the Fear of God is the beginning of wisdom, but not the end of the conversation. In that spirit, we encourage you to fear nothing else and be on your way rejoicing.5:15 - Reflections on FoG 20259:57 - That Ain't Right for the Final Destination franchise24:52 - Ranking the Final Destination films47:35 - Themes and Observations Across the Conversations1:08:23 - The Mack Daddy Kills Hall of Fame1:33:04 - Closing Credits and Special Thank YousSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Inspiring Life and Legacy of William Borden, a Man of Unwavering Faith and Profound Impact William Borden was extraordinary in almost every sense. Born into wealth and privilege, he could have chosen to live a life of luxury and ease. Instead, he surrendered it all for a life of service to Christ. "Borden of Yale" is the riveting account of a man who exemplified what it means to be fully committed to God. Raised in Moody Church in Chicago and educated at both Yale and Princeton, Borden first felt the missionary call during a round-the-world journey gifted to him by his parents at the age of sixteen. The following year, he received a distinct call to dedicate his life to serving the Muslims of China, a decision that shaped everything he did from that point forward. Though a scholar in his own right, Borden's theological insights were not merely intellectual pursuits; they were living beliefs that propelled him into action. From leading Bible studies in dorms and founding the Yale Hope Mission to serving as a director at the National Bible Institute and spearheading evangelistic efforts that impacted the entire city of Cairo, Borden was unwavering in his commitment to share the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. As promising as his life appeared, Borden passed away in Egypt while en route to serve the Muslims in China. Thousands mourned, contemplating what might have been. Yet countless others have been inspired to follow in his footsteps to the mission field. William Borden was a visionary, a trailblazer, and an inspiration for all who seek to follow Jesus Christ. This is not just a book; it's an invitation to reevaluate what truly matters and to live wholeheartedly for the Lord.

“Oh, 'twas love, 'twas wondrous love…” In Wondrous Love, world-renowned evangelist Dwight L. Moody delivers a series of powerful gospel messages originally preached in London during his late 19th-century evangelistic campaigns. With heartfelt urgency and Christ-centered compassion, Moody speaks directly to the lost, the backslider, and the spiritually hungry, calling all to experience the life-transforming love of God through Jesus Christ. This compelling collection of sermons brings the reader face-to-face with Christ's boundless mercy – from His healing touch to His saving grace for sinners, skeptics, and saints alike. With vivid storytelling, biblical illustrations, and unwavering conviction, Moody reminds us that no soul is beyond the reach of God's wondrous love. Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. – John 3:3 About the Author Dwight L. Moody, determined to make a fortune, arrived in Chicago and started selling shoes. But Christ found him and his energies were redirected into full-time ministry. And what a ministry it was. Today, Moody's name still graces a church, a mission, a college, and more. Moody loved God and men, and the power of a love like that impacts generations.

An Inspiring 31-Day Devotional In The Secret of a Happy Day, J. Wilbur Chapman offers a heartfelt exploration of the timeless comfort found in Psalm 23. This 31-day devotional illuminates the profound truths and enduring promises within David's ancient song, revealing its relevance and power to uplift souls regardless of life's circumstances. Chapman, with the wisdom of a seasoned pastor, invites readers on a daily journey through "The Shepherd's Song," to a place where every need is met, fear is dispelled, and eternal goodness and mercy are assured. Through an intimate introduction and thoughtful breakdown, Chapman delves into the six divisions of the psalm — Possession, Position, Promise, Progress, Provision, and Prospects — each representing a facet of the Christian's walk with the Good Shepherd. Readers are encouraged to reflect on the Lord's shepherding presence that guides through green pastures, restores the soul, and offers comfort even in the darkest valleys. The readings of The Secret of a Happy Day are an invitation to experience the deep and personal love of God anew. As you journey through each day with Chapman, let the truths of Psalm 23 transform your understanding of God's presence in your life and lead you into a deeper, more joyous relationship with Him. Whether standing beside the grave of buried hopes or basking in the sunshine of God's love, this book promises to be a source of comfort, strength, and inspiration, helping you to live out the serene trust and unshakeable peace that David himself experienced. About the Author J. Wilbur Chapman (1859-1918) was an American evangelist, pastor, and author known for his dynamic preaching style and evangelistic campaigns. He began his pastoral ministry in 1882, serving in several churches before becoming the pastor of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia in 1890. Chapman's ministry gained widespread attention for his emphasis on personal salvation and the power of prayer. He resigned from his pastoral position in 1903 to devote himself full-time to evangelistic work, teaming up with gospel singer Charles Alexander to conduct successful campaigns across the United States and abroad. Chapman's legacy lives on through his writing and the numerous pastors and evangelists he influenced.

Nothing is more important than the condition of your soul, and this timeless work offers thought-provoking insight and biblical wisdom for those who wish to store up treasure in heaven. Originally written by Puritan pastor William Dyer (1632–1696), The Strait Way to Heaven presents twenty biblical principles that lead to a life of deep repentance, unwavering faith in Christ, and true holiness. With deep insights drawn from Scripture, Dyer urges readers to forsake sin, embrace righteousness, and walk steadfastly in obedience to God. This revised and updated edition preserves the heart of Dyer's message while making his rich teachings more accessible to today's readers. Written with passionate urgency and deep pastoral care, this book serves as both a convicting call to self-examination and an encouraging guide to the joy of a life fully surrendered to the Lord. Dyer's words remind us that holiness is the only true path to happiness and that the narrow road of faith leads to eternal life. Whether you are seeking a deeper relationship with Christ or a better understanding of the Christian walk, The Strait Way to Heaven will challenge and inspire you to live with purpose, integrity, and unshakable devotion to God. About the Editor Ron Metheny is a Baptist pastor and Christian author. His published works include: Why, God? Why?! (Understanding Habakkuk), 'Twas the Devotional before Christmas: Daily Readings for Advent, and Echoes of Thunder (A Collection of Christian Quotes and Godly Wit). He lives in Kentucky.

And all things, whatever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. – Matthew 21:22 Persistent prayer is a mighty movement of the soul toward God, and it stirs the deepest forces of the soul toward the throne of heavenly grace. It is the ability to hold on, press on, and wait. Restless desire, restful patience, and strength of grasp are all embraced in it. Prayer is not an incident or a performance but a passion of soul. It is not a want or half-needed desire but a sheer necessity. List of Chapters Ch. 1: Prayer and Faith Ch. 2: Prayer and Unwavering Faith Ch. 3: Prayer and Trust Ch. 4: Prayer and Desire Ch. 5: Prayer and Fervency Ch. 6: Prayer and Persistence Ch. 7: Prayer and Perseverance Ch. 8: Prayer and Character Ch. 9: Prayer and Obedience Ch. 10: Prayer and Surrender Ch. 11: Prayer and Vigilance Ch. 12: Prayer and the Word of God Ch. 13: Prayer and Preaching Ch. 14: Prayer and the House of God About the Author Edward McKendree Bounds was born in Shelby County, Missouri, on August 15, 1835, and died on August 24, 1913, in Washington, Georgia. He was admitted to the bar in 1854 at the age of nineteen, but left the profession five years later when he answered the call of God to the ministry. Beginning in 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, he became the chaplain of the Fifth Missouri Regiment of the Confederacy. Bounds married Miss Emmie Barnett of Eufaula, Alabama, in 1876. By this union, he became the father of two daughters, Celeste and Corneille, and a son, Edward, who died at the age of six. His wife Emmie died in 1886, and later Bounds married Miss Hattie Barnett, Emmie's cousin. Together they had six children: Samuel, Charles, Osborne, Elizabeth, Mary, and Emmie. However, Charles died at the age of one, so in the end, the family consisted of seven children. After serving several important churches in St. Louis and other places to the south, Bounds became editor of the St. Louis Christian Advocate for eight years and, later, associate editor of The Nashville Christian Advocate for four years. The trial of his faith came while he was in Nashville, and he quietly retired to his home without even asking for a pension. His principal work in Washington, Georgia (his home), was rising at four o'clock in the morning and praying until seven o'clock. He filled a few engagements as an evangelist during the eighteen years of his life work in Washington, Georgia.

Where am I? Who am I? Where am I going? I think it is good for a man to pause and ask himself these questions. I do not ask you where you are in the eyes of your family, friends, or the community in which you live. It is of very little account what men think of us, but it is of vast importance what God thinks of us. Am I in communion with my Creator or out of communion? If I am out of communion, there is no true peace, joy, or happiness. But when we are in communion with God, there is light all around our path. You may think that your life is hidden, that God does not know anything about you, but He knows our lives much better than we do, and His eye has been fixed on us from our earliest childhood until now. I have heard of many people who think that if they join a church and make a profession of faith, that will suffice for the rest of their days. But there is also a cross for every one of us daily. O child of God, where are you? If God were to appear to you tonight and ask the question, “Where are you?” what would your answer be? Could you say, “Lord, I am serving You with my whole heart and strength; I am improving my talents and preparing for the kingdom to come”? About the Author Dwight L. Are you tired of religion that feels dry, rigid, or lifeless? In Dead Orthodoxy, Ryan Denton delivers a piercing yet hopeful call for Christians to rekindle their love for the Lord and revive their spiritual vitality. Drawing from Scripture, church history, and personal insight, Denton confronts the suffocating effects of a Christianity that is merely formal, complacent, and intellectual. With the precision of a theologian and the urgency of a revivalist, Denton smashes the idols of tradition and pride, dethrones empty formalism, and encourages Christians to embrace the living, experiential power of God through His Word and Spirit. Each chapter invites readers to reflect deeply, ask hard questions, and rediscover the joy of a “felt Christ.” Whether you're battling lukewarm worship, grappling with mediocre personal devotions, or yearning for revival in your church and your own heart, Dead Orthodoxy offers practical wisdom and a roadmap to renewed faith. Be challenged. Be encouraged. Be transformed. This book is for those brave enough to examine their souls and courageous enough to embrace the Spirit's call to repentance, renewal, and vibrant living.

Director Nabil Elderkin shoots music videos and films governed by vision, collaboration and diversity. While thematic similarities connect the dots between his projects, each video is different and a product of the stellar combination of the right artist, the right lighting, and maybe most importantly - the right feel. Growing up in a multi-cultural sphere, dictated by several international moves, led to an open-mindedness and an adaptability which did not hurt his transition into film. Surfing was the context which facilitated his portal in, and although he spent more time on the beach than in the water, the education he received, through direct exposure shooting his friends, was invaluable. His photography interest and experience developed further when he settled in Chicago, and came into Kanye West's orbit. Soon after, he started shooting music videos for a dossier for artists which continues to expand, and includes The Black Eyed Peas, Common, Seal, Bruno Mars, Foals, J. Cole, Travis Scott, Dua Lipa and Kendrick Lamar. For his work on Swim Good and Mercy, which feature Frank Ocean and Kanye West, respectively, Nabil received 3 VMA nominations, including Best Direction in a Video and Best Hip Hop Video for the latter. Among his feature films are the Ugandan breakdancing documentary, Bouncing Cats, and the gut-wrenching exploration of trauma - Gully - which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2019 and stars Charlie Plummer, Amber Heard, Jacob Latimore, Terrence Howard and John Corbett. In our conversation, we discussed the kernels of his film beginnings; working with actors like Willem Dafoe and Don Cheadle; collaborating with friends like John Legend; upcoming music video and narrative concepts he is developing; and a memorable encounter with Snoop Dogg.Opening Credits: HoliznaPATREON - Green Again ( LoFi) I CC BY-NC-ND 4.0; Anitek - Gnats I CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 US. Calm, rest, and peace come to us when Jesus becomes the great treasure of our lives. When Jesus is cherished as our inheritance and when we discover that he promises to give himself to us in deep personal relationship, this changes how we experience each day. Living in calm confidence is the result of prizing the Lord Jesus above all else. About the Author John Kitchen grew up on the plains of the Midwest in a good, but unbelieving family. After his father, sister, and he nearly died in an asphyxiation accident, his mother began seeking God. This led to John's surrender to Christ as a teen. God called him into ministry at the age of twenty, and he and his wife of over forty years have faithfully served together in full-time ministry since 1987. In 2020, God called the Kitchens to serve an international church in the Middle East.

If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water (John 4:10). If you ask, He will give you living water! That is all you have to do – ask. How real, how true, how free – yet how simple! This is grace. He loves us not because we are rich in goodness, but because He is rich in mercy; not because we are worthy of His favor, but because He delights in lovingkindness. His welcome to us comes from His own graciousness, not from our lovableness. Christ invites the weary. It is this weariness that fits you for Him and Him for you. Pardon, peace, and life – all of them are gifts, divine gifts, brought down from heaven by the Son of God, presented personally to each needy sinner by the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. They are not to be bought but received as men receive the sunshine – complete and sure and free. They are not to be earned or deserved by exertions, sufferings, prayers, or tears, but should be accepted at once as the purchase of the labors and sufferings of the great Substitute. They are not to be waited for but taken on the spot without hesitation or distrust, as men take the loving gift of a generous friend. They are not to be claimed on the ground of fitness or goodness, but of need, unworthiness, poverty, and emptiness. Lift up your eyes and look to Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith!

Stephen Suettinger directs and writes projects which address complicated themes, such as substance use, depression and unrequited love. His unique portrayals have a tendency to delve deeper into their most intimate desires, which occasionally blur the line between fiction and reality and makes for interesting storytelling. Following his debut short film, Writing Wrongs, the Maryland native attended the film MFA program at USC and cut his teeth in experiences surrounding the world of film on projects like Contact, Avatar and Beowulf. At USC, Steve directed his next short, Wentworth, which PBS picked up as part of its Imagemakers series. The film explored idealism and longing among two contemplative lovers, who are already in a state of love and comfort. He directed his first feature, A Year and Change, which was released in 2014 and starred an ensemble cast including Bryan Greenberg, T.R. People are obsessed with life; no one wants to die. In fact, we are scared to death of dying. Most of us are familiar with the saying, "You only live once." But we have to ask ourselves an all-important question: What happens to us after we die? For most people, death is either a great mystery or a subject of great denial. However, the fact remains – we all die. What if this life is not all there is? What if there actually is life after death? If so, who can tell us what happens after we die? Because of His firsthand experience in heaven and His knowledge of the future, Jesus can. He presents us with three basic truths about the subject of life after death: 1. There is life after death. 2. There are two destinations from which everyone must choose. 3. There is a way to ensure you make the right choice. Right now, you may be dying of thirst, but you don't have to perish in your thirst. Likewise, you may be overcome with sin, but you don't have to die in your sins. There is something you can do, right now, to ensure that when you die, you will have everlasting life and happiness. The most important thing you must do in this life is to make sure you don't die in your sins. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. – John 3:17 (NLT)

It was God's purpose from the beginning not merely to redeem sinners from His condemnation but also to bring those people into a special relationship with Himself. It is His desire to draw mankind closer to Himself than any other of His creatures and to establish a most special link between His people and Himself. Trials, then, have a purpose. They awaken us to a sense of our self-pleasing ways and to our indifference to the condition of the world we live in – not only as being a world of sin but thoroughly, and all over, a world of misery. They bring us into contact with solid certainties, and that produces thoughtfulness. They make us acquainted with grief, which drives off all levity. Since we know that God has our best intentions in mind, what should move us? What can ruin our joy? Our rejoicing is in the Lord, and He is good and has good plans for us. We know that this current life is not our rest, nor do we wish it were, for it is polluted; but our joy is this, that Jehovah is our God, and His promised glory is our inheritance forever. We are being molded and shaped into a vessel fit for His Kingdom! Do not seek, then, to please yourself, even as Jesus did not seek to please Himself. Live for Him, not for yourself. Live for Him, not for the world. Walk worthy of your name and calling. Walk worthy of Him who bought you as His bride. Walk worthy of your everlasting inheritance. Earth's dream will soon be done, and then comes the day of songs and everlasting joy (Isaiah 35:10) – the long reality of delight! About the Author In 1808, Horatius Bonar was born into a family of several generations of ministers of the gospel. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh and was ordained in 1838. As a young pastor at North Parish, Kelso, he preached in villages and farmhouses, proving himself to be a comforter and guide. In 1843, he joined 450 other pastors to form the Free Church of Scotland after the “Disruption.” Horatius Bonar wrote numerous books, tracts, periodicals, and more than 600 hymns. He believed that people needed truth, not opinions; God, not theology; and Christ, not religion. Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him (1 Corinthians 2:9) Although this is a small book, yet it presents you with matters of the greatest and most weighty concern, even with a discourse of life and death to eternity. It reveals and clarifies, by the Scriptures of God, that the time is at hand when there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust – even of the bodies of both, from the graves where they are, or will be, at the start of that day. In these few lines, you also have the order and manner of the rising of these two types of people, wherein it is shown to you with great clearness with what body they will then rise, as well as their condition at that day. You will here see the truth, including the manner of the terrible judgment, the opening of the books, and the examining of witnesses, with a final conclusion upon good and bad. If you are godly, then through God's blessing, this will encourage you to go on in the faith of the truth of the gospel; but if you are ungodly, then you may meet with conviction, and you will see what will be, without fail, your end at the end of the world whether you continue in your sins or repent. If you continue in your sins, you will meet with despair, darkness, and everlasting destruction; but if you repent and believe the gospel, then you will find light, life, joy, comfort, glory, and happiness throughout all eternity. About the Author John Bunyan was born in November 1628, in Elstow, England. A celebrated English minister and preacher, he wrote The Pilgrim's Progress (1678), the book that was the most characteristic expression of the Puritan religious outlook. His other works include doctrinal and controversial writings; a spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding (1666); and the allegory, The Holy War (1682).

Bruising is needed so that reeds may know they are reeds, not oaks. Reeds need to be bruised because of the pride in our nature, the removal of which lets us live by mercy and faith. It is a difficult thing to bring a dull heart to cry for mercy. Our hearts, like malefactors, until they are beaten from all sides, never naturally cry for mercy from the Judge. But this bruising makes us set a high price upon Christ. It makes us more thankful and more fruitful in our lives. Whatever claim sin has on a man, bruising or breaking is the end of it. This spark of hope, being opposed by doubts and fears arising from the corruption of sin, makes him as smoking flax. Thus, both these together, a bruised reed and smoking flax, make up the state of a poor, distressed man. Our Savior terms such a one as poor in spirit. Christ will not break the bruised reed or quench the smoking flax. Though physicians put their patients through much pain, they will not destroy their patients' bodies but will do their best to heal them. Surgeons will cut, but not dismember. A mother will not cast away a sick or disobedient child. Shall we think there is more mercy in ourselves than in God, who plants the affection of mercy in us? To further declare Christ's mercy to all bruised reeds, consider the comforting relationship He has taken upon Himself of husband, shepherd, and brother, which He will discharge to the utmost. It cannot but cheer the heart of the church to consider, despite all the infirmities and miseries she is subject to, that she has a Bridegroom with a kind disposition. He knows how to give the honor of kindness to the weaker vessel and will be so far from rejecting her because she is weak that He will pity her all the more. He is kind at all times and will speak to her heart, especially when in the wilderness. About the Author Richard Sibbes (1577-1635), an influential Puritan preacher and theologian, served at Gray's Inn, London, after being ordained around 1608. His key writings include The Bruised Reed, The Soul's Conflict With Itself, and The Saint's Safety in Evil Times, and his sermons are preserved in The Works of Richard Sibbes.

The morning! That is our watchword. Our evening prayers and songs are filled with hope. The morning adds hue to life, imparting color to that which is colorless, and freshening that which is faded. It is the essence of our hopes and dreams. Stars may help to make the sky less gloomy, but they are not the sun – and besides, clouds have now covered them so they are no longer visible. Torches and beacon lights do not help. Our own lights make no impression upon the darkness; it is so deep, so real, so unmistakable. We might give up all for lost if we were not assured that there is a sun and that it is hastening to rise, and we are watching for it. The church's pilgrimage is nearly complete, yet she is no less a pilgrim as its end draws near. The last stage of the journey might be the dreariest for her. Her path lies through the thickest darkness that the world has yet felt. It is the sound of falling kingdoms that is guiding us onward. It is the fragments of broken thrones lying across our path that assure us that our route is the true one and that its end is near. Then comes the morning with its songs; and in that morning, a kingdom; and in that kingdom, glory; and in that glory, the everlasting rest, the Sabbath of eternity. We belong to the day, and the day belongs to us, as our true heritage – and when it comes, we will not be ashamed for having zealously awaited that great day. How much religion among many members of churches consists of nothing but church rituals! They belong to their church. They are baptized, married, buried in at the church, and preached to on Sundays by her ministers, but the great doctrines of truth have no place in their hearts and only a little influence on their lives. Is the religion of these people real Christianity? No, it is Churchianity – and nothing more! If your religion is real and has been given by the Holy Spirit, it must be in your heart. It must sway the affections. It must lead the will. It must direct the tastes. It must influence the choices and decisions. It must fill the deepest, lowest, inmost seat in your soul. Is this your Christianity? Real Christianity will cause a person to glory in Christ as the Redeemer, the Deliverer, the Priest, and the Friend – without whom he would have no hope at all. It will produce confidence in Him, love toward Him, delight in Him, and comfort in Him as the Mediator, the Food, the Light, the Life, and the Peace of the soul. This Christianity will produce in the person who has it repentance, faith, hope, love, humility, spirituality, kindness, self-denial, unselfishness, forgiveness, temperance, truthfulness, brotherly kindness, patience, and forbearance. Is this your religion? About the Author John Charles Ryle (1816-1900) graduated from Eton and Oxford and then pursued a career in politics, but due to lack of funds, he entered the clergy of the Church of England. He was a contemporary of Spurgeon, Moody, Mueller, and Taylor and read the great theologians like Wesley, Bunyan, Knox, Calvin, and Luther. These all influenced Ryle's understanding and theology. Ryle began his writing career with a tract following the Great Yarmouth suspension bridge tragedy, where more than a hundred people drowned. He gained a reputation for straightforward preaching and evangelism. He travelled, preached, and wrote more than 300 pamphlets, tracts, and books, including Expository Thoughts on the Gospels, Principles for Churchmen, and Christian Leaders of the Eighteenth Century. Ryle used the royalties from his writing to pay his father's debts, but he also felt indebted to that ruin for changing the direction of his life. He was recommended by Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli to be Bishop of Liverpool where he ended his career in 1900.
