A Surgeon’s Perspective: Health Begins in the Gut! Today we are thrilled and blessed to speak with Christopher C. Smith, MD, FACS, a board-certified general surgeon that has practiced in Albany GA since 1983. A native of Tifton, Georgia, Dr. Smith earned a B.S. degree from the University of Georgia, and then earned a Medicine doctorate degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. Dr. Smith is one of the pioneers of laparoscopic surgery and Albany Surgical/Southern Surgery Center serves as a worldwide center of excellence for robotic surgery, bariatric weight loss surgery and alternatives, and cutting-edge reflux treatments such as Nissen and Linx procedures along with many other types of general surgery. Dr. Smith long ago distinguished himself as a brilliant surgeon, but his lifelong fascination with the role of nutrition and exercise in health certainly sets him apart from his peers. His patients love the fact that he sees surgery as the last option to address their health challenges, and only after dietary and lifestyle interventions have failed to produce the desired outcome. He believes as we do that good health begins and ends in the gut with a healthy gut biome, and his adoring patients are living proof of this truth. Dr. Smith is indeed a rare gem in the world of modern medicine. We look forward to hearing his incredible insights to Reflux, PPI's and the Link to Cancer. On this episode, we get into part 2 of our discussion with Mormon historian Chris Smith. Part 1 was the primer with a heavy focus on early Mormon emissaries. Part 2 dives into how these Mormon-Native relationships were explored and leveraged to hasten the Mormon theodemocracy with dictatorial prophecies of war and bloodshed. Chris reads a letter from James Arlington Bennett that minces no words about the impending Mormon military campaign. Then we bring things back around to Alpheus Cutler to discuss his Native emissary missions and settlement. We wrap the conversation with Native-Mormon relations in Utah under Brigham Young and discuss Walkara. Chris opines on what lessons we can take from this snapshot of history. On this episode, we sit down with Mormon historian Chris Smith to discuss part 1 of a 2-part series on Native and Mormon relations during Joseph Smith’s ministry. We begin with discussing the Book of Mormon being written explicitly to the Natives and describe Joseph’s mindset in allying with the Natives to overthrow the U.S. Government. Then we broach the utility of the Council of Fifty and jump into a few important emissaries Joseph called to forge trading and military relations with various Native tribes. Lewis Denna (Dana, Denny), and his work with church leadership, are of particular import as he was a Native convert to the church. We try to put the plight of the Natives in broader context throughout America. Then we wrap with the work of Jonathan Dunham (J. Dunham ‘Lamanite’) and his work with various Native groups. Chris Smith is not LDS but has been fascinated with the tradition since he dated the local Mormon bishop's daughter in high school. His research as a religious historian has lead him to the conclusion that Joseph Smith sought to resolve 19th Century America's political conundrums allegorically through the Book of Mormon. He argues that Joseph's hope was that one day the church he established would redeem the USA and become the Kingdom of God on Earth. The Book of Mormon is not, he argues, a literal history of an extinct Native American civilization unless the civilization was experiencing exactly the same political, social, economic, racial and cultural issues that characterized antebellum USA.
On this episode, we take an opportunity to talk with budding Mormon historian, Christopher Smith, who just landed his professorship at U of U! We talk about the current timeline and some of the broader social tensions plaguing Jo and the church in 1838. After that we move on to talk about Dr. Smith’s dissertation concerning the Mormon colonization of Utah and just how bloody it really was. Apparently Bloody Brigham was a bit apprehensive to slaughter thousands of Natives but somehow was convinced otherwise.
