FREE RESOURCE:  Click the link and see if the SHED METABOLIC RESET PROGRAM is a good fit for you!  FREE RESOURCE:  Try our Protein Calculator, see how much you might require daily!    In this episode of Wild Medicine, Dr. Michelle and Dr. Tara discuss the critical issue of nutrition education and its impact on health.  They explore how many individuals lack proper guidance on eating, leading to widespread metabolic health issues.  The conversation delves into the importance of understanding dietary patterns, the role of stress and hormones, and the necessity of consistency in eating habits.  They emphasize the need for a structured framework to promote safe and effective eating practices, ultimately aiming to empower individuals to take control of their health.  In this conversation, Dr. Tara and Dr. Michelle discuss the importance of simplifying nutrition to reduce mental load, emphasizing the balance of carbs and protein, the benefits of front-loading calories, and the critical role of fiber in digestive health.  They highlight the need for individuals to take radical responsibility for their health and empower themselves through understanding nutrition.  The discussion is rooted in clinical insights and personal experiences, aiming to provide practical advice for listeners.   Takeaways Nobody taught us how to eat properly, leading to confusion. Creating clarity in nutrition is essential for empowerment. Metabolic syndrome has significantly increased in recent years. 1.54 billion adults are affected by metabolic syndrome. Fundamental nutrition education is lacking in society. Routine and consistency in eating are crucial for health. Carbohydrates often dominate meals, overshadowing protein. Fiber intake is typically much lower than recommended levels. Eating healthy can feel radical in today's food culture. Safety and predictability in eating lead to better health outcomes. Reducing mental load around food choices is crucial. A one-to-one ratio of carbs to protein is beneficial. Front-loading calories can enhance energy levels throughout the day. Fiber plays a significant role in digestive health and overall well-being. Tracking food intake can help identify dietary patterns. Empowerment comes from understanding and taking responsibility for health. Simple dietary changes can lead to significant improvements in health. Meal prep can simplify daily nutrition decisions. Carbs should be included in a healthy diet, focusing on fiber-rich options. Radical responsibility is key to achieving health goals.   Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Wild Medicine and Eating Habits 03:49 Understanding the Impact of Uninformed Eating 06:52 The Metabolic Health Crisis 10:36 Fundamentals of Nutrition and Eating Patterns 16:07 The Importance of Consistency in Eating 20:26 The Role of Stress and Hormones in Eating 29:49 Framework for Safe and Consistent Eating 30:58 Simplifying Nutrition: Reducing Mental Load 32:28 The Importance of Carbs and Protein Ratios 34:15 Front-Loading Calories for Better Energy 38:50 The Role of Fiber in Digestive Health 41:43 Taking Radical Responsibility for Health 49:03 Empowerment Through Understanding Nutrition   Stay Wild. She explains the difference between probiotics and postbiotics, emphasizing that this concentrate delivers postbiotic metabolites (including short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, plus enzymes, amino acids, vitamins, peptides, and growth/repair factors) created via a five-year fermentation of 14 fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, and seaweeds; the paste contains no live probiotics because they are heat-killed. The discussion highlights use cases for people who don't tolerate fiber or probiotics (IBS, SIBO, Crohn's, ulcerative colitis), potential benefits for leaky gut, systemic inflammation, gut-brain/mitochondrial health, insulin resistance, children, and pets, and suggests it can complement Dr. Ohhira's capsules and may be taken less than daily.

Ever since finding the ketogenic diet in 2012, he ran a one-month experiment with this way of eating that has never stopped. As a self-described nerd, he found the ketogenic diet in 2012 through a podcast on software security out of pure chance. This experiment has evolved through several flavors since then, but as far as this experiment is concerned, the experiment never ended, and he is still ketogenic to this day!As he often is answering the same questions, he recently built a German-and-English-language website (butterbei.de) to simulate the glucose/insulin relationship, in order to illustrate what happens in the body, and make the otherwise hidden processes visible without the need to wear a continuous glucose monitor. The website has since developed into a source of nutritional information based on his findings that the cause-and-effect typically perceived in nutrition can easily be twisted around.Together with his dog Fiete he lives in Hamburg/Germany, which makes both of them authentic and actual (wait for it) Hamburgers. Find Olaf at-http://butterbei.de/Find Boundless Body at-myboundlessbody.comBook a session with us here!

Functional Diagnostic Nutrition: Using Saliva Testing, Food Sensitivity Labs, and Lifestyle to Find Root Causes: Reed Davis, Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner (HHP) and Certified Nutritional Therapist (CNT), is founder of Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN). He discusses using functional testing alongside conventional care to uncover “dysfunction” when standard labs appear normal. Davis describes assessing adrenal and metabolic stress via saliva testing for circadian cortisol patterns, cortisol-DHEA balance, sex hormones, secretory IgA, and melatonin, emphasizing clinical correlation and individualized “studies of one.” He outlines an approach targeting multiple “healing opportunities” (H-I-D-D-E-N: hormones, immune, digestion, detoxification, energy, nervous system) and applying D-R-E-S-S (diet, rest, exercise, stress reduction, supplementation) rather than relying on supplements alone. A case example links chronic hives, medication-related weight gain, and food triggers identified through additional testing, including the Mediator Release Test. The discussion also covers stress-driven gut dysbiosis, digestion decline, and EFT tapping for stress-related symptoms, and notes FDN practitioners can be found via FDNtraining.com/medicine.

In this episode, I'm joined by Jessica Salwen-Deremer, Director of Behavioral Medicine for Digestive Health at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Associate Professor at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. Dr Salwen-Deremer specialises in the intersection of sleep, gut health, and gastrointestinal behavioural medicine, with a particular focus on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In this episode, we explore the powerful and often overlooked relationship between sleep and the gut — including how poor sleep can worsen pain, fatigue, and inflammation, and how gut symptoms can in turn disrupt sleep. We unpack the bidirectional nature of this relationship, the role of the gut microbiome and circadian rhythms, and why sleep should be considered a core part of managing conditions like IBD and IBS. We also discuss how to recognise and assess sleep problems in clinical practice, the difference between insomnia and symptom-driven sleep disruption, and why treatments like cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) can be so effective. Whether you're a clinician or someone living with gut symptoms, this episode highlights why sleep is not just a side issue — it's central to gut health and overall wellbeing. Please enjoy my conversation with Dr Jessica Salwen-Deremer.

In this episode, Dr. Greg Jones sits down with Dr. Devaki Lindsey Berkson, a pioneer in functional medicine and hormone research, to explain why true longevity depends on hormone signaling, receptor sensitivity, gut health, and environmental resilience.Dr. Berkson shares why hormones function as the body's “software,” coordinating metabolism, cognition, immune balance, and cellular repair. She explains why normal lab values don't always reflect optimal function—and why many patients feel fatigued, inflamed, or hormonally imbalanced despite being told everything looks “fine.”Environmental toxins, mineral deficiencies, vitamin D status, and microbiome imbalances are all discussed as modern disruptors of hormonal communication. If you're interested in bioidentical hormone therapy, functional endocrinology, gut-driven inflammation, or precision longevity strategies, this episode delivers a research-informed, systems-based framework for sustainable health optimization.

Dietitian Nutritionist Leyla Muedin discusses a Stanford-led randomized controlled trial published in Nature Medicine in which a five-day, calorie-restricted fasting-mimicking diet improved symptoms and inflammatory markers in people with mild to moderate Crohn's disease. In the three-month study of 97 patients, 65 followed monthly five-day cycles of 700–1100 calories/day with plant-based meals, while 32 continued usual diets; about two-thirds of the fasting-mimicking group reported symptom improvement, with fatigue and headaches but no serious side effects, and fecal calprotectin and other inflammatory molecules decreased. She notes bowel rest and the specific carbohydrate diet as additional approaches. The episode also explains how antibiotics can cause diarrhea by disrupting gut bacteria, lists higher-risk antibiotics, offers supportive steps (hydration, BRAT foods, avoiding irritants), recommends Saccharomyces boulardii taken away from antibiotics, and outlines warning signs requiring medical care, including possible C. difficile.

The truth is that your digestive health and your hormonal balance are far more intertwined than most people realize, and addressing one without the other may be exactly why nothing has worked so far.On Salad with a Side of Fries, host Jenn Trepeck welcomes Bridget Walton, functional hormone specialist and founder of I'm Hormonal, for a candid, science-backed conversation about the connection between hormones and gut health. From estrogen metabolism and microbiome balance to stress, elimination, and the power of functional nutrition, this episode delivers the clarity and actionable guidance women navigating these challenges have been seeking. What You Will Learn in This Episode:✅ How sluggish elimination leads to a buildup of estrogen metabolites in the body, which can directly fuel PMS symptoms, heavy periods, cramping, and mood swings.✅ Why an imbalanced gut microbiome triggers an inflammatory response that disrupts cortisol and your sex hormones, creating a cycle that is difficult to break without addressing the root cause.✅ The foundational daily habits, including eating a rainbow of fiber-rich plants, incorporating fermented foods, minimizing processed food inflammation, and proper hydration, support both digestive health and hormonal harmony.✅ How to recognize when general wellness strategies are no longer enough, and functional health testing may be the key to finally getting a personalized plan that moves the needle. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast, hosted by Jenn Trepeck, explores real-life wellness and weight-loss topics, debunking myths, misinformation, and flawed science surrounding nutrition and the food industry. What if weight loss has never been the right goal in the first place? In this episode, Dr. Taz sits down with registered dietitian Ashley Koff, RD, author of Your Best Shot, to unpack why the conversation around GLP-1 medications is much bigger than Ozempic, Wegovy, or tirzepatide alone. This episode reframes the entire GLP-1 conversation by shifting away from weight loss as the goal and toward what Ashley Koff calls “weight health.” Instead of treating Ozempic, Wegovy, tirzepatide, and related medications as magic fixes or villains, the conversation explores the deeper hormonal ecosystem behind appetite, blood sugar, digestion, inflammation, body composition, and metabolic health.Ashley explains that GLP-1 and GIP are part of a larger family of peptide hormones made in the gut lining, and that when this system is disrupted by poor digestion, stress, gut lining damage, nutrient insufficiency, dehydration, medications, or microbiome imbalance, the body's weight regulation becomes suboptimal. She argues that many people are not failing at weight loss. Their body simply does not have what it needs to function optimally. If you're dealing with weight changes, food noise, metabolic dysfunction, or feeling like your body is not responding the way it should, and want deeper, root-cause support, join the Circle here:

In this episode of Health Matters, host Courtney Allison sits down with Dr. Haley Zylberberg, a gastroenterologist at NewYork‑Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine, to find out the basics of gut health, from digestion and the microbiome to fiber, fermented foods, and the gut‑brain connection. Dr. Zylberberg explains how fiber supports digestion, why everyone's “normal” gut function looks different, and how stress and mental health can directly affect the digestive system. She also shares signs of a healthy gut, red flags that shouldn't be ignored, and why colorectal cancer screening is so important—especially as younger adults are being diagnosed more often. Whether you're curious about probiotics, wondering how much fiber you really need, or looking to better understand your body, this episode offers practical, science‑backed guidance to help support lifelong gut health. Chapters: 00:00 – The Basics of Gut Health and the Microbiome What the gut is, how digestion works, and why the microbiome plays a critical role in overall health. 06:30 – Fiber, Food, and Supporting Your Gut How fiber supports digestion, how much you need each day, common misconceptions, and tips for increasing fiber safely. 11:30 – The Gut‑Brain Connection How stress affects digestion, why the gut and brain communicate so closely, and what that means for digestive symptoms. 15:10 – Red Flags and Colorectal Cancer Screening Warning signs of an unhealthy gut, when to see a doctor, and why colorectal cancer screening is essential and preventive. Key Topics Covered   ·  Gut anatomy and digestion ·  The gut microbiome and “good” bacteria ·  Fiber benefits and daily fiber intake ·  Fermented foods and probiotics ·  Gas, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea ·  The gut‑brain connection and stress ·  Red flag digestive symptoms ·  Colorectal cancer prevention and screening guidelines Takeaway Message Your gut plays a central role in your overall health, and small, consistent habits—like eating enough fiber, managing stress, and knowing what's normal for your body—can make a big difference. Paying attention to changes and staying up to date with recommended screenings can help catch problems early and even prevent serious disease. Expert Guest Dr. Haley Zylberberg's clinical focus is general gastroenterology, with a specialization in celiac disease. She has a sustained interest in patient-outcomes research using large databases and has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles on celiac disease diagnosis and its clinical manifestations.  Dr. Zylberberg earned her B.A. in neuroscience and behavior from Columbia University and her medical degree at Hofstra-Northwell School of Medicine, where she graduated with a distinction in research. She completed internal medicine residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital, followed by a gastroenterology fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where she served as chief fellow.
