Guests: Dr. Bill Weiss, The Ohio State University and Dr. Corwin Nelson, University of FloridaJoining together for another Journal Club to discuss vitamin D as a lactation influence on dairy cows are dairy leaders and nutritional experts Dr. Bill Weiss and Dr. Corwin Nelson. Dr. Weiss, professor emeritus at The Ohio State University spent nearly 33 years of his career focused on dairy cattle nutrition and has published more than 140 journal articles. He began the conversation, introducing the article “Effect of prepartum source and amount of vitamin D supplementation on lactation performance of dairy cows” and mentioning Mike Piondexter as the first publishing author. 2:20Discussing the research study in depth was Dr. Corwin Nelson, Piondexter's advisor. He began by introducing the Journal of Dairy Science article, highlighting the nutritional effects of supplementing vitamin D and the connection between feeding two different forms. 6:15Dr. Nelson shared studies dating back to 1980 to indicate some vitamin D degradation. But added that most rations have between 30,000 to 50,000 units of vitamin D3 on top of basic international units. 9:40In the article, the abstract shows productive measures such as body weight and condition, dry matter intake and factors. However, Dr. Weiss mentioned the majority of research data derived from cows during their last few weeks of weaning. 13:21Dr. Nelson said that research also analyzed net energy between using colostrum and vitamin D, adding that feeding the 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the ration resulted in higher results of energy. 14:14When looking at energy corrected milk, Dr. Nelson said in about 42 days he's seen interaction between cows producing the most milk and the three milligrams per day of 25-hydroxyvitamin D supplementation. 19:01Anti-inflammatory is another mode of action vitamin D has shown to effectively decrease in cows with lower serum. In fact, three to four weeks is the optimum benefit when it comes to supplementing less than the elevated 25-hydroxyvitamin D recommendation. 32:55It was also mentioned that there may be a possible United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) grant opportunity to look at the long term effects of cow responses, maternal and neonatal vitamin D nutrition and a more focused approach to the immune system are all upcoming research modes of actions. 42:27Please subscribe and share with your industry friends to bring more people to join us around the Real Science Exchange virtual pub table. Guests: Dr. Mike Van Amburgh (Cornell University), Dr. Jose Santos (University of Florida), Dr. Heather White (University of Wisconsin-Madison)Gathering together at the 2023 Tri-State Dairy Nutrition Conference for the Balchem Mini-Symposium “New Revelations in Transition Cow Nutrition” are speakers Dr. Mike Van Amburgh, Dr. Jose Santos and Dr. Heather White. The mini symposium featured topics such as better understanding essential versus required nutrients, choline research as a nutritional requirement and insights on gaining the next five pounds of milk. Dr. Van Amburgh of Cornell University led the discussion, summarizing his report on essential and required nutrients such as amino acids and choline. He mentioned when formulating diets for lactating cows, it's important to understand there are other nutrients that aren't necessarily essential but are required. 4:53Shifting the conversation, Dr. Van Amburgh said establishing an optimum value has now replaced nutrient requirements based on energy. Recent evidence indicates that feeding rumen protected choline (RPC) significantly improves milk production. In addition, supplementing choline shows an increase in low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) output from the liver. 7:21Highlighting her research in supplementing choline, Dr. White shared that studies show a 20 to 25% increase from cells and culture after incorporating the nutrient. She added choline also increased the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) capacity, indicating a shift in nutrient incorporation. 11:45 As milk increases when infusing non-essential amino acids or even by using meta-analysis to supplement choline, how is glucose supply impacted? Dr. Santos, who focused his research on meta-analysis, said that even with the concurrent increase in dry matter intake, efficiency has still increased. He went on to say that studies from Wisconsin and Michigan highlight the basic understanding of a cow's variable ability to synthesis glucose differently with the ability to produce at least two kilograms more milk consistently. 21:30Within some of Dr. White's meta-analysis research, she mentioned mixing choline into the total mixed ration (TMR) allowed for the opportunity to analyze exact intake and also outcome production or energy corrected milk (ECM) fat. 34:08If cost isn't an issue, Dr. Santos mentioned that he's seen experiments feeding choline longer than 21 days postpartum and into 105 days at 12.9 grams. While no major benefit showed at that dosage amount, he added that other studies have shown benefits feeding choline longer and into mid lactation. 39:41Switching gears, Scott Sorrell, podcast host and director of global marketing for Balchem asked Dr. Santos about epigenetics and the effect choline has on behavioral changes. 44:59Sharing that epigenetics shifts genomes without changing sequences, Dr. Santos mentioned that through a two-by-two factorial experiment on choline, research indicates calf behaviors shifting and performance increasing. He went on to mention that history shows 30% of calves that were born from control dams and fed colostrum from control dams died from lipopolysaccharide challenges. 51:10Wrapping up the conversation, Dr. Zimmerman, podcast co-host and technical services manager for Balchem said that research speaks for itself. He stated that higher producing cows continue to prove choline as a required nutrient for transition cows. 55:50Please subscribe and share with your industry friends to bring more people to join us around the Real Science Exchange virtual pub table. AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by AABP members from the Saskatoon Colostrum Company Limited (SCCL), Dr. Travis White, Director of Veterinary Technical Services, and Dr. Mike Nagorske, Director of Research. This episode is sponsored by SCCL and you can find information about their company on their website. If you are an AABP member interested in calves, we encourage you to join our new ad hoc Cattle Youngstock Committee. The first meal a calf receives is the most important and studies show that previous recommendations of 150 grams of IgG may not be adequate and up to 300 grams of IgG is ideal to ensure health and productivity in calves. White and Nagorske discuss the details of feeding protocols such as dosing regimen, incorporating this feeding with regular milk meals and starter rations. They recommend 70 grams/head/day of replacer to mimic this transition milk feeding for 10-14 days. This can be added to whole milk feeding or with milk replacer if the appropriate weight of milk replacer is removed to ensure the correct osmolality of the as-fed milk. Colostrum replacement products can be used to mimic this transition milk and our guests also remind listeners to be familiar with the differences between colostrum supplements and replacers. Studies conducted by SCCL have demonstrated up to a 50% reduction in preweaning morbidity and mortality and a 0.1 to 0.2 lbs. per day increase in average daily gain. We also discuss the return on investment (ROI) when calves are fed colostrum replacement products during the first 10-14 days to mimic transition milk feeding. The ROI can be up to 20% due to decreased medication use, increased gains pre and post weaning, decreased morbidity and decreased mortality. Overall, producers can expect an investment of $20-30 per calf with the biggest impact from that investment coming from decreased scours. Veterinarians should consider these new protocols to improve calf health and work with producers to implement them on their farms.Short communication: Effects of transition milk and milk replacer supplemented with colostrum replacer on growth and health of dairy calvesJ Dairy Sci https://doi.org/10.3168/jds.2020-18361 Evaluation of the effects of oral colostrum supplementation during the first fourteen days on the health and performance of preweaned calvesJ Dairy Sci https://doi.org/10.3168/jds.2008-1433 Evaluation of the effects of colostrum replacer supplementation of the milk replacer ration on the occurrence of disease, antibiotic therapy, and performance of pre-weaned dairy calvesJ Dairy Sci https://doi.org/10.3168/jds.2016-11652 Feeding colostrum or a 1:1 colostrum:milk mixture for 3 days postnatal increases small intestinal development and minimally influences plasma glucagon-like peptide-2 and serum insulin-like growth factor-1 concentrations in Holstein bull calvesJ Dairy Sci https://doi.org/10.3168/jds.2019-17219

Guests: Dr. Barry Bradford, Michigan State UniversityOn this third episode of the New Revelations in Transition Cow Nutrition from the 2022 Cornell Nutrition Conference four-part mini-series to discuss animal nutrition requirements are remarks from Dr. Barry Bradford of Michigan State University and topical insights from Dr. Clay Zimmerman of Balchem. Bringing forward recent research on transition cow studies, Dr. Bradford began the conversation by highlighting the 2022 Michigan State University study that aimed to understand metabolic physiology better. 3:30While the focus is usually on refining nutritional strategies, Dr. Bradford suggested the bigger question is how dairy farmers will leverage efficiency and productivity in the future. 4:31Focusing much of his professional career on better understanding nutrient requirements and capabilities in dairy cattle, Dr. Bradford remains dedicated to helping the industry understand ways to achieve the next five pounds of milk sustainably. When limiting cow health problems, Dr. Bradford shifted his focus to analyze epidemiological studies on lactation sustainability and the impact of conditions during milk production. 6:15Influencing the microbiome continues to be a metric for achieving higher production levels, but what are other strategies? Dr. Bradford shared that choline continues to impact phospholipid synthesis and transportation to the mammary gland positively. He added that the focus of choline in transition cows directly affected liver health and suggested analyzing choline concentration in early lactation stages. 12:27Within the study, Dr. Bradford mentioned research showed active choline cells became less responsive to inflammatory stimuli. He mentioned that choline concentration not only increased mRNA, but overall he saw an 80% increase in colostrum yield from the supplemented study. 25:27Just a week into lactation, Dr. Bradford's research showed cows produced nearly 100 pounds of milk daily. But what were some additional effects of choline on the cows? While there weren't any negative impacts on productivity, Dr. Bradford mentioned the study showed baseline research on the anti-inflammatory significance and body circulation through plasma TNF. 33:31 Dr. Bradford added they also looked at carryover effects of lipid protein (LP) in days 22 to 84, sharing they saw milk yield peak with added LP and choline supplementation. He shared that the LP carryover yielded another five pounds per day and remained steady for another two months post-challenge. 43:33Wrapping up the conversation, Dr. Zimmerman summarized key strategies Dr. Bradford shared and mentioned the value in protecting choline during transitional periods to not only impact herd health but increase milk yield overall. 54:55If you would like to review Dr. Bradford's webinar from the 2022 Cornell Mini Symposium, you can view all four webinar series at balchem.com/realscience. Today's conversation on THE FULLEST Podcast is a powerful reminder of how miraculous mother nature is. We sat down with Sarah Rahal, MD, the brains behind ARMRA, a colostrum powder that protects, rebuilds, and strengthens your body's barriers for defense against everyday threats and enhanced vitality. Dr. Rahal is a neurologist who spent her career treating children with chronic diseases. In the 1950s, 1.6% of children suffered from this; today, chronic disease affects more than 54% of kids. Modern-day environmental exposures to pollutants and pesticides explain this drastic jump. Unregulated and untested chemicals live in our air, water, food supply, body products, clothing, furniture, and even children's toys. With this harsh (but realistic) knowledge, Dr. Rahal set out to find something to minimize the environmental impact on human health. She had her a-ha moment when she discovered colostrum — a dairy superfood produced by all mammals in the first 48-72 hours after giving birth. Colostrum is the first nutrition we receive and contains all of the essential nutrients our bodies need to thrive. This liquid gold acts as an immune blueprint with unparalleled health benefits. After deeply studying colostrum, Dr. Rahal ultimately left her clinical practice and set out to build a brand with a mission aimed to support today's modern environment. That's where ARMRA comes in! Dr. Rahal discusses the benefits, sourcing, and bioavailability behind ARMRA and why everyone needs this living superfood in their diet. Topics we cover: - Conventional vs. holistic approach to medicine - Modern technology and its impact on today's society - A breakdown of colostrum's benefits - ARMRA's sourcing and integrity - Anecdotal evidence supporting ARMRA's products - Dr. Rahal's knowledge is vast, and her journey is worth tuning into. - Colostrum deserves to be shared with the world! If you are looking to support your immunity, gut, sinuses, metabolism, energy levels, mental clarity, and skin/hair, this is a must-listen! (Even if you have a dairy intolerance, ARMRA is for you!) Let's talk about Lyme disease. It's a bacterial infection caused by the bite of an infected tick and it's pretty prevalent in the US with over 300,000 cases reported each year. But here's the thing, conventional medicine usually only treats the symptoms of Lyme disease with antibiotics, which can have negative side effects and don't address the root cause of the disease. That's where functional medicine comes in. It offers an alternative approach to treating Lyme disease that focuses on supporting the body's natural healing processes. Functional medicine practitioners use a variety of tools and techniques to identify the underlying factors contributing to a patient's Lyme disease, such as genetic predispositions, environmental toxins, and nutritional deficiencies. That's why today I am bringing you some of the most inspiring stories of people who have healed themselves of lyme disease through functional medicine testing, nutrition, detoxification and alternative medicine. This is the Lyme series: This is the series to listen to or send a loved one who is suffering with Lyme and has exhausted all other options. There is hope. You can heal. First up, we roll a clip from episode 199 with Devon Dionne. Devon's wellness journey dates back to her late 20's. Despite being a dancer and appearing slim and healthy, she had a disordered relationship with food, and was pre-diabetic and pre-menopausal: her blood sugar and hormones were completely out of balance. And, she was suffering from Lyme disease. Through a combination of Gyrotonic training, holistic anti-aging strategies and nutrition, Devon completely healed her Lyme disease, balanced her hormones and now feels healthier than ever. Then we're throwing it back to episode 247 with Adrienne Nolan-Smith. Adrienne was diagnosed with Lyme disease at just 11 years old. Back then, doctors didn't know much about Lyme, how to recognize it, much less, how to treat it. Antibiotics weren't working, but Adrienne did not give up. She went on a route to heal herself and between a whole foods diet, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, alternative medicine and more Adrienne healed her body from Lyme disease. Thank You to Our Sponsors! AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by Dr. Travis White, Director of Veterinary Technical Services with the Saskatoon Colostrum Company Limited (SCCL). SCCL provides whole bovine colostrum for convenient administration when colostrum is not available from the cow. We already know the importance of calves receiving colostrum shortly after birth to achieve passive transfer of immunity, but did you know that whole colostrum has benefits for the calf if also fed after day one? White discusses the exciting new research about whole colostrum and how it can be used to treat calf scours and improve gastrointestinal health. Calves with inadequate levels of IgG from passive transfer are 5.5 to 9.5 times more likely to become ill before weaning, have 4 times the mortality, and experience decrease growth and feed efficiency. The new recommendation is to provide 300 grams of IgG within 6-8 hours of birth and to have more than 40% of calves with excellent passive transfer. When calves have scours, colostrum can be used as a treatment. White discusses research that demonstrated that calves with neonatal diarrhea treated with colostrum had a decreased duration of diarrhea, increased weight gain, and used less antimicrobials. White discussed the term “gut dysbiosis” and how colostrum can help to heal the damage to the gastrointestinal tract in animals with gastroenteritis. He also discusses how veterinarians can develop treatment protocols for neonatal scours that include administration of 150 grams of IgG in 1 to 2 feedings. Links:Saskatoon Colostrum Company Ltd. For our 47th podcast episode, I review some of the general benefits of maternal breast milk and why it is so important for all infants, but especially those who are critically ill and in the NICU, to receive maternal milk. Human milk, often referred to as liquid gold, is considered the gold standard feeding plan for all infants. Maternal human milk provides many nutritional advantages for infants, but it is also advantageous in non nutritional aspects as well. Unfortunately, NICU mothers face additional barriers that make it more difficult for them to effectively express their milk and ultimately breastfeed. Data has shown that for all NICU infants, whether preterm and/or critically ill, receive less than 20% of their own mother's milk at 6 months of age, most commonly due to insufficient maternal milk production. Mothers whose infants are admitted to the NICU are faced with both physical, emotional, mental, and social inhibiting circumstances that make it much more difficult for them to not only establish their milk supply, but also maintain it. There are also significant racial disparities that exist and human milk provision is lowest among non-Hispanic Black and American Indian/Alaska Native populations. It is the standard of care for most NICUs to utilize Donor Human Milk (DHM) as an alternative or to help bridge the gap for infants when the mother's breast milk is either not available or there is insufficient volume. Although donor breast milk is a great option that is beneficial, it does not have the same overall protective mechanisms and bioactivity as the mother's milk. In the episode, we review what some of the common barriers are for NICU mothers in their physical ability and desire to provide breast milk for their infant. I share recommendations on what we as NICU clinicians can do to educate, support, and guide all mothers in a culturally sensitive and supportive manner. By recognizing the common and individualized barriers for NICU mothers, we can share our knowledge in an empathetic and holistic manner. Therefore, mothers and their care partners are able to make an informed decision and one that has the potential to impact their infant while they are in the NICU and in the months and years that follow! Our NICU Roadmap: A Comprehensive NICU Journal:https://empoweringnicuparents.com/nicujournal/Finn + Emma: http://shrsl.com/2py7dNICU Mama Hats: https://empoweringnicuparents.com/hats/NICU Milestone Cards: https://empoweringnicuparents.com/nicuproducts/Newborn Holiday Cards: https://empoweringnicuparents.com/shop/Empowering NICU Parents Show Notes: https://empoweringnicuparents.com/shownotes/Episode 47 Show Notes: https://empoweringnicuparents.com/episode47Empowering NICU Parents Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/empoweringnicuparents/Empowering NICU Parents FB Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/empoweringnicuparentsPinterest Page: https://pin.it/36MJjmH

Often when there is an extra complication like an illness, a disability, or a rare disease, human milk feeding can be made more difficult because well-meaning care providers don't always provide the latest evidence based information. When early human milk feeding gets interrupted by outdated policies, this can have long lasting implications for the parent and the baby.Today's episode focuses on Diabetes, which is one such complication that often sets off a cascade of both prenatal and postpartum interventions that lead to prolonged breastfeeding/chestfeeding difficulty. This is a unique episode as it features both evidence based information presented by host and IBCLC Lo Nigrosh and an interview with Megan of Illuminated Birth who experienced breastfeeding as a person with Type 1 Diabetes. This episode features information about: Setting yourself up for baby feeding success if you have Type 1, Type 2 or gestational diabetes Research about preventing hypoglycemia (or low blood sugar) in the baby as a person with diabetes Hand Expression during the 3rd trimester to harvest colostrum in case it is need for hypoglycemia Information about milk making specific to people with Diabetes Information about formula content versus human milk content as it relates to blood sugar regulation The difference in blood sugar management between pregnancy and postpartum when the parent is nursingTo hear Megan's full baby feeding story, find it here.To hear Francie Webb's episode on Hand Expression, find it here.To hear the episode on Medications and human milk, find it here.Find Megan to be your doula, childbirth educator or birth photographer on her website. Colostrum: the liquid gold of life for newborn dairy calves. While it's fairly universally understood how important colostrum is, we occasionally encounter the bizarre situation when a cow comes in with very little or no colostrum. Then, shortly later another cow comes in and nearly overflows the bucket. This situation intrigued researchers out of New York to closely study 19 Holstein herds in attempt to find associations of management to colostrum yield and quantity. Listen in to Trent Westhoff from Cornell as he discusses the recently published article titled, "Epidemiology of bovine colostrum production in New York Holstein herds: Cow, management, and environmental factors". You'll learn about the all the associations that can impact colostrum quantity and quality such as barn lighting, dry period management, parity and more. By anticipating these colostrum inventories you'll ultimately become a better manager of your newborn calves - Listen in! Is it possible to have a baby if you are a woman who was born with HLHS? What problems can occur when a person with a single ventricle heart becomes pregnant? What advice would a Heart Warrior offer others trying to have a baby? Meghan Roswick-Didier is 30 years old and was diagnosed with HLHS at 7 days of age. She had four open-heart surgeries at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia including the Norwood at nine days old, the hemi-Fontan at seven months old, the Fontan at 13 months old and a surgery to open her ASD at two-and-a-half-years old. Her doctors encouraged her to set her own limits which she did. She enjoyed gymnastics and sports in high school and never let anything hold her back. In her early 20s she suffered a devastating stroke and took a year to recover. Meg has studied Neuroscience at the University of Cincinnati, coaches gymnastics and advocates for better patient care for adults with congenital heart defects. In 2022 she embarked on her biggest journey yet, as she and husband Dustin became parents to daughter Lucy. JEDER MENSCH IST EINZIGARTIG UND DU HAST DEINEN EIGENEN WEG Ich hoffe, du bist gut ins Neue Jahr gestartet. I'm so stoked to bring Dr. Sarah Rahal to you all today. Finally, an expert on colostrum, nature's oldest healing elixir. For the yet uninformed, colostrum is secreted by all mammals for a few days right after giving birth, before the more commonly understood breast milk starts to flow. And yes, you guessed it – it has incredible health and healing benefits. As a huge fan of the stuff and longtime user, I had been searching for someone to speak on the subject with authority. Today is that day, folks. The fact of the matter is, and Dr. Rahal is one to cement this fact, that colostrum is the only real superfood. Why? Because it's the only one meant for our own consumption for the sole purpose of fortifying our health. Everything else is a plant or individual being that lives and survives on its own volition without us. Plain and simple: colostrum is food – first, foremost, and very specifically. We talk about its incredible molecular makeup, the 5,000+ clinical studies on colostrum that exist, and why you probably haven't heard of them. Sarah then breaks down autoimmune symptoms, leaky gut, and general inflammation as the root to most of our health challenges. For those of you listening who find yourself colostrum curious by the end of the show, Dr. Rahal's boundary breaking new brand, ARMRA, has provided a discount for you. This episode of Have You Herd? is sponsored by Elanco Animal Health, manufacturer of Vira Shield. Find out more information about Vira Shield at this link and the scours vaccine we discuss on the podcast on this page. Our topic is the importance of a colostrum management program to the health, welfare and productivity to calves. Our guest is Dr. Phillip Jardon, Elanco Technical Service Consultant, and we discuss the veterinarian's role in conducting colostrum audits to monitor and improve the colostrum program on the dairy. Jardon discusses the 5 “Qs” of colostrum management which include Quality, Quantity, Quickness, sQueaky clean and Quantify. In addition, we discuss the importance of cooling the colostrum rapidly and feeding at body temperature. The veterinarian is the ideal resource to monitor a colostrum program. Jardon discusses “go to the Gimba” which means “go to where the work is done” and visually observe what is happening on the dairy. We also discuss the importance of using tools to support visual observation such as evaluating colostral and serum IgG with a refractometer, culturing colostrum for bacterial overgrowth, using temperature logging devices (HOBO's), and using a luminometer to check sanitation of all equipment. Veterinarians can implement colostrum auditing services immediately on client operations to improve calf health and the success of the dairy by incorporating these tips.Links and publications: Consensus recommendations on calf- and herd-level passive immunity in dairy calves in the United StatesJ Dairy Sci, Vol. 103, Issue 8, August 2020 Dairy Calf and Heifer Association Gold StandardsStandards for dairy calves developed by the Dairy Calf and Heifer Association Calf NotesWebsite of calf resources in printable format developed by Dr. Jim QuigleyCalf Facts Resource LibraryWebsite of calf resources in printable format developed by Dr. Sam Leadley at Attica Veterinary Associates P.C.
