This episode of My Backstage Pass we speak with singer and songwriter Bruce Sudano. Mentored early on by pop wiz Tommy James of Tommy James and the Shondells fame, Bruce Sudano was one of those fortunate few who was able to achieve a parallel career as both an artist and songsmith. He achieved his greatest glories by way of the material made famous by others — among them, the Jacksons, Dolly Parton and his late wife, Donna Summer. Nevertheless, he was seduced by the stage early on, and his initial efforts with the bands Alive N Kickin' and Brooklyn Dreams netted him a recording contract and led to his first solo album, The Fugitive Kind in 1981. In the meantime, he formed a personal and professional relationship with disco diva Donna Summer for whom he penned the smash hit “Bad Girls.” It proved a highly lucrative collaboration; aside from the series of songs Summer went on to record, Sudano was also able to contribute to several successful soundtracks —“Thank God It's Friday,” “The Hollywood Nights,” “Perfect,” and “American Hot Wax,” the latter of which featured Brooklyn Dreams in the role of a fictitious band called the Pantones. A top five single, “Heaven Knows,” soon followed, and after the two married, life seemed ideal. Donna's passing brought their magical partnership to a premature end,  but Bruce has bounced back by returning to the solo spotlight with music of his own making. We talk with him as he shares his saga and talks about what's ahead for him in the future. Learn more about Bruce Sudano  and his music at http://www.brucesudano.com Host Lee Zimmerman is a freelance music writer whose articles have appeared in several leading music industry publications. Buckle up! Alex de Campi jumps into our Creator Corner to discuss her galactic gig economy magnum opus, Full Tilt Boogie! The writer behind Dracula Motherf**ker, Bad Girls, and Archie vs. Predator (1 & 2) puts her spin on the sci-fi found family, and while you'll recognize a few of the trappings, we promise that you've never experienced a tale quite like this one. How many times do we utter the word "masterpiece" during this episode? Quite a few.  While we were reading Full Tilt Boogie, we were both overcome with "the tingles." This comic is special, and we expect it to blow up into something even grander. De Campi is already hard at work with her collaborator Eduardo Ocaña on the Full Tilt Boogie follow-up. We need it now. But first, you have to buy this comic. Full Tilt Boogie is set for release in the States on May 11th from 2000 AD. You can find Alex de Campi on Twitter HERE and Instagram HERE. Ann Chernow: Artist, ‘The Queen of Noir’, Film Noir & Femme Fatale

The 1940s and 1950s saw changes to how women were portrayed in film. A change from the victim of the 1930s. Post World War II films introduced the ‘Femme Fatale’ and with it women characters who were mysterious and dangerously seductive, not victims. During the war, women had taken the place of men in the workforce, bringing an independence that for many, had never been experienced before.  These movies were known as ‘Film Noir’ (French for ‘dark film’), classics of the 1940s and early 1950s. 'The Queen of Noir' Ann Chernow So I turned my attention to ‘The Queen of Noir’, renowned artist Ann Chernow. Ann has been painting this genre for over a decade. She does paintings, prints and drawings always in the abstract capturing the essence of the ‘Femme Fatale’. Ann has gone from actual portraits of the films’ stars, to imaginary faces of film, to painting scenes from the films to inventing scenes from ‘Film Noir’ movies. Then came a night alone at an Italian restaurant in NYC and a bottle of wine. The evening resulted in creation of ‘Bad Girls’ – eight separate stories and eight separate images. Film Noir and Femme Fatales have been with her ever since that evening. ‘The reason for women: everybody has a guess. It’s psychological. It has to do with the women in the films. The women in Noir movies all had fabulous clothing and the men just had gray suits and hats. There’s nothing to paint – just gray suits and hats, so the male figure is sometimes an abstract support.’ Meet Ann Chernow Artist, ‘Queen of Noir’, Mother, Grandmother and Teacher. Ann has taught art for over 26 years. Born in New York City in 1936, Ann has been a resident of Westport, Connecticut, considered a haven for artists for the last 50+ years. Ann is a beloved leader in the extended arts community. She has worked in the mediums of lithography, silkscreen, etching and colored pencil as well as oil painting. Ann’s second husband, Burt Chernow founded the Housatonic Museum of Art. He was an art historian and professor at the Housatonic Community College. Burt passed away in 1997. Ann later became the life partner of actor and documentarian, Martin West (d. 2020). Ann’s work evokes a sense of veiled mystery. A veiled mystery that is the essence of Film Noir and Ann’s creativity. I had the privilege of talking with Ann about our favorite genre of film, her beginning, her philosophy, the pandemic and her continued mining. Age 3 ½ - the beginning The RKO theaters and going to the movies at 11 Victims and Heroines The ‘Queen and King’ of Noir Femme Fatales 1930’s and Post World War II Those clothes The abstract ‘That looks like my grandmother’ Miss Bette Davis How to get an invitation Artists and life Advice to young artists Keep on mining

“You don’t think someone broke in when I wasn’t looking?”. We hear an update from Unanimous Superfan Kimberly about Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (and why it seemed so titilating to the audience whenever mentioned). Ting-a-ling Disco bloomers: they’re all the rage. A new “That Does Suit Madame” jingling underwear range? (Would you buy?) Little things means a lot. How Mrs. Slocombe causes a stir at the Social Club. Mr. Harmon sings a new song: “Isn’t it nice to have friends who you can rely upon?”. (YES) Mr. Rumbold is forced to deflower Captain Peacock. Hot take: this is the same scene in the AYBS The Movie with the chattering teeth. Is The Movie “cannon?”: the podcast is split. Retirement pension plans in the States will never occur again. (Ugh). The Grace Bros staff enjoy a retirement pension scheme and it pays to be young. Mr. Humphries is looking forward to the homeopathic doctor. The staff all decide to try to get fit in time for the doctor’s check-up via ballet! The instructor (Amanda Barrie from “Carry On” films and “Bad Girls”) joins Humphries in a pas de deux from Swan Lake. Mr. Goldberg’s weird murmuring over the audience’s laughter. Lots of revealing ballet outfits from the staff. During a pagan dance circle, Humphries turns into a fairy sprite as the staff fall into place for a final pose. Nudeism with you co-workers at Grace Brothers. We see the Gentlemen’s Department underwear draped on the curtain. 1970s approach to women being interested in men! Cockney rhyming slang: lose your bottle The staff overhears their “medical report” which is actually an antique furniture insurance info. And finally onto the poof. What is “rising damp”? (Or it’s just good ol’ North American mold) Should this episode had been splint into two?!
