The ubiquitious, but seldom noticed, Quonset hut Today a look at a common but oft-overlooked maritime structure - the Quonset hut. First designed and built for the US Navy in 1941, they were styled after a WWI version called the Nissen hut. Once used in military installations during WWII, the Navy sold them surplus to the public after the war, and the rest, as they say, is history. And we'll hear what is probably the quintessential artistic work regarding this unusual style of building: Fisher Poet Jon Campbell's reading of his hilarious poem, "Quonset Hut," in which he refers to the Quonset hut as being a testament to Rhode Island's "indigenous school of meatloaf architecture."
The Cognitive Crucible is a forum that presents different perspectives and emerging thought leadership related to the information environment. The opinions expressed by guests are their own, and do not necessarily reflect the views of or endorsement by the Information Professionals Association. During this episode, Kay Nissen discusses her Army's Command and General Staff College thesis entitled: Second Mover Advantage In The Military Information Environment. This thesis examines second-mover advantage theory within the military information environment. It aims to offer military planners alternative strategies beyond the traditional emphasis on seizing the initiative, proposing a secondary response framework. The research explores how to create a second-mover advantage, focusing on response timing and type through a mixed-methods approach. The conversation also touched on the challenges of implementing theories in practice, the importance of cooperative partners, consistency, and information tempo, and the potential research areas in this field. Recording Date: 8 Nov 2024 Research Questions: Kay Nissen suggests interested students examine: What makes a cooperative partner in order to create a second mover advantage? How does information tempo compare to influence timing? How do second mover advantages appear in different information functions? Nick is a Harvard trained psychiatrist who's developed a unique approach to managing ADHD without the use of some of the most common stimulant medications like Adderall or Ritalin. We chat about the explosion in prescribing stimulant medications during the pandemic and the rise of companies like Cerebral. The pros and cons of using stimulants to treat ADHD, the importance of developing executive functioning skills and not just relying on a medication. Again, we touch on the subject of temporary use of medication while working in therapy vs staying on meds long term, and why ADHD tends to fall into the latter with many patients taking a stimulant medication long term without working on any of the non-medication interventions that Nick describes. Lastly we talk in detail about Nick's clinical approach in working with patients with ADHD and the Bio, Psycho, Social interventions that he uses which can include; therapy, coaching, non stimulant medications, supplements, diet, exercise, sleep and more. ** Couple of points to note, in the intro I refer to Nick treating ADHD without the use of medication, this is not quite accurate.. As you'll hear he treats without controlled substances like stimulants or benzodiazepines, but he does use other medications like antidepressants. Nick also mis-quoted a book by Nick Norwitz's. The approach is called Medi-keto, not Ketotarian. https://a.co/d/j2ofBAQ Uncontrolled Substances: how tele-health company Cerebral set out to shake up the mental health industry and ended up under federal investigation. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5eKfXdhLOjl7mrfbq0jF7e Nissen Clinic (Nick's private practice)

Like many sisters, Alison Nissen and Marcy Stoudt are similar in some ways and not alike in others. Alison graduated college and settled into a career in academia. Marcy, on the other hand, found success in the corporate world. As their mother entered mid-stage Alzheimer's disease, they began to chat daily about their dream of launching their own business. They signed off each call with the chant: “It's better together!” The more they talked, the more excited they became about the future. They designed Revel Coach as an inspirational platform that mentors executives and entrepreneurs who wish to find career and family success. When you have a vivid vision, aligned action, and a growth mindset, it is possible to find harmony by celebrating every small and large success along the way. Find Joy everywhere! Today, Revel Coach mentors individuals in their next steps for their careers, volunteerism, and public service. Memorable Moments“Doing what you're doing right now may be all the right things…but take a peek at where you would like to be in three years and start taking the steps to have an action plan for that vision.”“We forget how much choice we have in how we think. Generally, our circumstances are not our stressors, but rather the negative thoughts and viewpoints we manifest out of insecurity.” “Know where you're pointing, then start breaking it down into tangible steps. You can start today…just because you don't have the credentials, experience, wealth, or whatever the setback, doesn't mean you have to act that way. A lot of our work starts with the foundational mindset and helping her reframe how she thinks about where she's headed." CardioNerds (Drs. Richard Ferraro, Gurleen Kaur, and Rupan Bose) discuss the growing epidemic of obesity and dive into the role of its procedural management with Dr. Steve Nissen, Chief Academic Officer at the Cleveland Clinic HVTI and past president of the American College of Cardiology. This is an exciting topic that reflects a major inflection point in cardiovascular care. In this episode, we discuss the importance of addressing obesity in cardiovascular care, as it is a major driver of cardiovascular disease and the progression of associated cardiovascular comorbidities. We look at the role of bariatric surgery and its ability to produce sustained weight loss. Finally, we look into the emerging role of new medical therapies such as GLP1 and GIP agonist medications. Notes were drafted by Dr. Rupan Bose and episode audio was edited by CardioNerds Intern Dr. Atefeh Ghorbanzadeh. This episode was produced in collaboration with the American Society of Preventive Cardiology (ASPC) with independent medical education grant support from Novo Nordisk. Pearls and Quotes - Procedural Management of Obesity with Dr. Steve Nissen Obesity is associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Returning to a healthy weight can largely prevent the downstream consequences of obesity. Regarding lifestyle modifications, diet alone is insufficient in sustaining prolonged weight loss. It is associated with short-term weight loss, but it is generally necessary to supplement with exercise and activity to ensure sustained weight loss. Bariatric surgery should be considered for patients with BMI ≥40 kg/m2 or BMI ≥35 kg/m2 with obesity-related comorbid conditions who are motivated to lose weight and who have not responded to behavioral treatment with or without pharmacotherapy. New emerging medications, including GLP1 receptor agonists, GIP receptor agonists, and glucagon receptor agonists, are beginning to approach weight loss levels that were previously only seen with bariatric surgery. Further research in this dynamic area is ongoing. Show notes - Procedural Management of Obesity with Dr. Steve Nissen Notes drafted by Dr. Rupan Bose. What is the role of obesity in the burden of cardiovascular disease, and why is it so important for CardioNerds to address it? According to the AHA, approximately 2.8 to 3.5 billion people worldwide are either overweight or obese. It is estimated that by 2030, 30% of people in the US will have a BMI greater than 30. Adipose tissue is associated with cytokine release. Cytokines, in turn, can activate and increase levels of IL-1 beta, IL-6, and CRP, leading to an increased inflammatory state. This pro-inflammatory state then accelerates the rate of cardiovascular disease. Obesity is also associated with significant joint and orthopedic diseases, which further impact patients' quality of life and morbidity. Additionally, obesity is associated with NASH cirrhosis. These adverse liver outcomes hold additional significant systemic implications and morbidity. How do you determine one's goal weight and goal BMI? Is BMI a good standard for measuring obesity? BMI is a variable of both weight and height. However, it cannot differentiate those whose weight is from adipose tissue versus from muscle mass. Therefore, BMI measurements can sometimes be misleading. Waist circumference may be a better measurement standard for obesity and risk assessment. The “apple shape” body type, with more abdominal fat, is associated with higher inflammation and cardiovascular risk than the “pear-shaped” body type, which is where there is more fat deposition in the buttocks a...

In her freshman year as a vocal performance major, Emma Nissen received devastating news. Just nine weeks into her studies, she learned that her vocal cords were damaged and required surgery. She very easily could've felt, in that moment, that everything she'd worked for was falling apart. But she remembered a prompting she had earlier that week—a prompting to serve a mission—and how she'd told the Lord if he'd create a window of time for her to serve, she'd go. So she went and the rest, as they say, is history. On this week's episode, we talk with Emma Nissen about how God's window opened a door for her to share her music in a way she never could've dreamed possible.
