Today's Lake and Shed framed conversation is about Rowling's remarkable “fairy-tale” and the history and meaning of its release during the “pandemic” hysteria of 2020. The Ickabog, along with Casual Vacancy and Ink Black Heart, is not only one of Rowling's most autobiographical works, but, with the Lake and Shed interview, the Solve et Coagula tattoo, her RFK Award speech, and the Trans Tweet Heard Round the World, a key to her self-understanding in the critical year 2019-2020. Nick takes the ‘Shed' point and lays out the controlled demolition of her reputation among Group Thinkers on the Left in the lead up to Ickabog's publication and John shares the meaning of ‘The Ickabog's Song,' the embedded text of the tale, as interpreted by Daisy Dovetail (an embedded author?).New to the Lake and Shed Kanreki Birthday series? Here's what we're doing:On 31 July 2025, Joanne Murray, aka J. K. Rowling and Robert Galbraith, will be celebrating her 60th birthday. This celebration is considered a ‘second birth' in Japan or Kanreki because it is the completion of the oriental astrological cycle. To mark JKR's Kanreki, Dr John Granger and Nick Jeffery, both Nipponophiles, are reading through Rowling's twenty-one published works and reviewing them in light of the author's writing process, her ‘Lake and Shed' metaphor. The ‘Lake' is the biographical source of her inspiration; the ‘Shed' is the alocal place of her intentional artistry, in which garage she transforms the biographical stuff provided by her subconscious mind into the archetypal stories that have made her the most important author of her age. You can hear Nick and John discuss this process and their birthday project at the first entry in this series of posts: Happy Birthday, JKR! A Lake and Shed Celebration of her Life and Work.Tomorrow? Perhaps the best single book by Rowling-Galbraith, Troubled Blood. Nick will be sharing Rowling's skills in and beliefs about astrology which plays an outsised role in the fifth Strike novel. John talks about the “Best Mate” scene in the Agency office and its important mythological backdrop. What's happening, spooky folk? This week on the podcast, I welcome back Rikki Tikki Timber to break down Jordan Peele's psychological horror film Get Out. We explore how Peele uses suspense, dark humor, and disturbing visuals to highlight themes of racism, identity erasure, and control. From the unforgettable “Sunken Place” scene to the coded language of liberal hypocrisy at the Armitage family's dinner party, we dissect the film's layered metaphors and social commentary. We also examine key characters like Chris, Rose, and Rod, and how their roles reflect broader societal dynamics. Together, we dive into the symbolism behind the mysterious "Behold the Coagula" and the Death Cheetah vs. Matter poster in Chris's apartment—unpacking how they enrich the narrative's deeper messages. Plus, we discuss the film's original, darker ending and why Jordan Peele chose to give audiences a rare moment of triumph. This episode is meant to be a tense, thoughtful, and sometimes uncomfortable conversation, but it's Rikki and I, so we got jokes that are probably not ok.Thank you, everyone, for your support. The ALICE collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider has found a way to literally knock protons out of lead atoms and turn them into gold atoms. Researchers explained that when atoms just miss each other, the electromagnetic field around the atoms can cause them to change into different elements. These changes don't last long, however, and produce very little gold. From 2015 to 2018, the scientists created 86 billion gold atoms, or rather less than a trillionth of a gram, though each atom only exists for a fraction of a second before breaking apart. Perhaps this explains why alchemical legends speak about how lead can only be transformed into gold when it is no longer needed or desired. Of course, alchemy is about far more than literal gold, but the CERN story confirms again that science and magic are inseparable at their core: astrology birthed astronomy, ritual magic birthed psychology, and alchemy birthed chemistry. If science is “knowing” by “observation,” then even mythology is an early form of science. The fact is, alchemy is much more than turning lead into gold; it is the mystery of life, the homunculus grown in a container, the earth egg and comet sperm of panspermia, and the brain child idea that produces invention. This should make us rethink the supernatural and occult. So should another study from the University of Calgary and the National Research Council of Canada. An experiment on mice and leaves has unveiled physical evidence of a biophoton phenomenon ceasing upon death, suggesting that all living things literally glow until expiration. Despite this fact, Science Alert says “It's hard not to associate scientific investigations into biological electromagnetic emissions with debunked and paranormal claims of auras and discharges of surrounding living organisms.”*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. Libra Season is bringing a big shift in energy. With a solar eclipse in Libra and Venus' descent into Scorpio, this season pulls us past surface projections to work with deeper layers of complexity, uncertainty and activation. Facing shadows is scary, but true love requires the courage to confront fear. In this episode, Renee Sills offers a reading for the collective, inviting us to attune to the ways astrology expresses through our bodies and lives.
