The Album: Ol Dirty Bastard: Return to the 36 Chambers (1995) "Ain't no father to his style." That's how Ol Dirty Bastard was introduced to the world on 1993's Enter the 36 Chambers by hip-hop's posse supreme, the Wu Tang Clan. At the time, we got an inkling of ODB's eccentricity but on that first Wu album, so overloaded with personalities, it was hard to pluck him out of the stream and think "he might be the Clan's most memorable talent" but two years later, sandwiched between a stream of solo efforts by Method Man, the GZA, Raekwon and Ghostface, ODB put the world on notice with Return to the 36 Chambers. Here was Big Baby Jesus aka Dirt McGirt in all his weird, wonderful glory, with a raspy, rumbling voice that was like no other, singing and rapping in a way that was either wholly unhinged, creatively brilliant or perhaps, both. These are the part of the mysteries that we tried to unpack with the help of Open Mike Eagle. He's no stranger to Max Fun listeners as OME is half the team behind Tights and Fights, when he's not also helping host the Secret Skin or Conversation Parade podcasts. He also, of course, is a prolific MC himself, with well over a dozen EPs and LPs to his name including last year's What Happens When I Try to Relax. As you'll hear, Return to the 36 Chambers wasn't just OME's intro to Dirt Dog, it was how he discovered the Wu and he, and hip-hop, would forever be changed. On today's episode I talk to rapper and podcaster Open Mike Eagle. Originally from Chicago, Mike moved to LA where his hip hop career began, first as part of the collective Project Blowed and the trio Thirsty Fish, and later as a solo artist. He's released five albums: Unapologetic Art Rap, Rappers Will Die of Natural Causes, 4NML HSPTL, Dark Comedy, and his latest Hella Personal Film Festival. The Stakes miniseries on Adventure Time has concluded and it's up to Conversation Parade hosts John Moe and Open Mike Eagle to figure out what it all means. John's pretty sure there's a message hidden in Marceline's repeated inhalation of vampire souls. For Mike, there is great significance in the characters' life patterns and what happens as a result. Plus, veteran Adventure Time storyboard artist Ako Castuera tells Mike about death, Greek mythology, and making Marceline happen.

We're five episodes in to the new season of Adventure Time, meaning John and Mike have plenty to talk about on the latest Conversation Parade. Mike has noticed that there's been a lot of talk about trusting the process in some recent stories. He's wondering if it's the King of Ooo saying that or someone much higher up the pecking order. John has been thinking about dirt holes and how each of the five new episodes features dirt holes. Are they graves? Are they gardens? Are they some combination of the two? Plus, we talk to Adventure Time writer and voice of Root Beer Guy (and Dirt Beer Guy) Jack Pendarvis. He was a mild-mannered university professor in Mississippi when he got the call to join Adventure Time. Now he's a mild-mannered cartoon writer who still lives in Mississippi.

Adventure Time is back with a new season and Conversation Parade is back as well to help you pick apart what's happening. Bonnie & Neddy introduces us to Princess Bubblegum's younger brother, an easily frightened tree root-sucking dragon, leading Mike to wonder if the whole candy kingdom runs on anxiety. Princess Bubblegum sets off to hunt pumpkin-eating monsters in Varmints and along the way has an existential crisis, leading John to ask who Princess Bubblegum really is now that she’s not a princess. Also, an interview with Ashly Burch. She's a YouTube star turned Adventure Time actor (the voice of Breezy the bee) and now she's been hired to help write the show.

Special guest and friend of the show Open Mike Eagle of Secret Skin and Conversation Parade joins us once again to figure out which melody is merriest with Best Looney Tune. Meanwhile Cullen reveals his knowledge of leather jackets, John makes a fatal mistake in the pronunciation of the national park "Yosemite" and we have what is widely agreed to be the best finals we've ever had.

A new season of Adventure Time looms on the horizon and Conversation Parade hosts John Moe and Open Mike Eagle are here to share their thoughts on what may be to come. What's the deal with the Mushroom Wars? What's going to happen as a result of the political turmoil in the Candy Kingdom? Our special guest this week, unlike all weeks thus far, is someone who does NOT work on Adventure Time either behind the scenes or into the microphone. Our guest is singer/songwriter Neko Case, who, besides being a popular musician, is a huge Adventure Time fan. She has some thoughts on Finn's dad and his parallels to her own life.

What does death mean in the world of Adventure Time when some characters croak and others live forever? And what are we to make of Glob, the nearest thing we have to a deity in this universe? Is he a creator and mastermind of all things or just a four-faced security guard living on Mars who sacrifices himself for dumb reasons?
