He wasn't Keanu Reeves, and he definitely wasn't a Christian hero. In this episode, we rip the golden halo off Constantine the Great and dig into the actual history behind the man who allegedly saw a cross in the sky and converted an empire. Spoiler: he was more into Apollo than Jesus. Was Constantine a devout believer or just a savvy warlord with excellent PR? We're dragging in all the big names—Diocletian, Eusebius, Helena, Galerius, Julius Caesar, Sol Invictus—and tossing their reputations on the pyre of historical comedy.Featuring entrails, imperial propaganda, and a brief stopover in ancient Canada (don't ask, just listen). Perfect for fans of religious satire, Roman drama, and anyone who's ever side-eyed Christian revisionism. Sketch comedy. Blasphemous history. Reluctant education. Because saints don't order the murder of their wives and sons. But emperors do.
Samara Weaving (Ready or Not, Scream VI, The Babysitter) and her husband, writer-director Jimmy Warden (Cocaine Bear, The Babysitter: Killer Queen), sit down with us to talk all things Borderline—a darkly twisted thriller about fame, obsession, and dangerous attraction. Samara stars as Sofia, a former ‘90s pop star trapped in a psychological game with an unhinged fan (Ray Nicholson), and Jimmy pulls back the curtain on making his feature directorial debut alongside his wife.We dive into the film's wild creative process, Samara's electric chemistry with Ray, and what it was like directing a film that blurs the line between love and madness. Plus, they share a hilarious (and slightly eerie) real-life story about being followed home—eerily fitting for Borderline's themes.Beyond the film, we talk The Babysitter, Cocaine Bear, and Samara's rise as a modern scream queen. And yes, we ask about Ready or Not 2—how could we not?Follow Us on Social Media:Instagram & Threads: @mostlyhorrorpodTikTok & Twitter/X: @mostlyhorrorSteve: @stevenisaverage on all socialsSean: @hypocrite.ink on IG/TikTok, @hypocriteink on Twitter/XEnjoy this episode? Many of us these days are experiencing a certain inexplicable unsettledness with our lives, a constant sense of frustration and restlessness that seems to defy explanation – or resolution. Because of those conditions, we may also find ourselves becoming increasingly aggravated, with our fuses growing progressively shorter. And, no matter what we might do to try and address these circumstances, it often feels like nothing works, that the irritation is perpetual and unrelenting. As a consequence, coping becomes virtually impossible as we struggle to find a way to keep going, circumstances all too familiar to a middle-aged British housewife in her attempts to keep from losing it. Find out more in a review of the new dark comedy-drama, “Hard Truths,” on the next edition of The Cinema Scribe.

The gang at Philosophy in Film embarks on a wild ride with Sean Baker's Palme d'Or-winning dark comedy, Anora. This episode explores the intricate narrative of Anora Mikheeva, a Brooklyn-based sex worker portrayed by Mikey Madison, whose impulsive marriage to Vanya Zakharov, the son of a Russian oligarch, leads to unforeseen challenges when his family intervenes. Craig reveals his impulsivity as he proposes with Producer's Notes (7:39), setting the stage for Alain's 4-carat Beauclair Synopsis (22:18), where he lays out the twists and turns of Anora's high-stakes journey. Chris then steers Philosopher's Corner (37:50), examining the transactional and emotional dynamics at play, and what they reveal about power, autonomy, and human connection. The Round Table (49:04) dives into Baker's sharp social critique while wrestling with the film's treatment of morally murky characters. Then, in Reviews (1:37:56) and Mailbag (1:50:26), we sort through listener thoughts and reactions before cashing out for the night. As always, we discuss the philosophical and non-philosophical aspects of the movie—because in a world of high rollers and low morals, nothing comes without a cost. Episode Summary In this episode, Dave and Michael discuss Companion, the directorial debut from Drew Hancock. A mix of science fiction, dark comedy, and thriller, Companion follows Iris, a robot companion, as she navigates power dynamics and hidden agendas during a weekend getaway at a remote lakeside estate. The film explores themes of toxic relationships, control, and AI consciousness, all while delivering sharp humor and unexpected twists. Director: Drew Hancock Genre: Sci-Fi, Dark Comedy, Thriller Produced by: Barbarian creative team (Zach Cregger, Roy Lee, J.D. Lipschitz, Raphael Margolis) Cast: Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets, Heretic) as Iris Jack Quaid (The Boys) as Josh Lucas Gage (Euphoria, The White Lotus) as Patrick Megan Suri (It Lives Inside, Never Have I Ever) as Kat Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows) as Eli Rupert Friend (The Death of Stalin, Homeland) as Sergei Timestamps & Discussion Highlights 00:00:15 - Introduction Dave welcomes listeners to Mindframes and introduces the show's format. Michael reveals the movie they're discussing: Companion (2024). 00:00:35 - Movie Overview Companion is the directorial debut of Drew Hancock. A science fiction, dark comedy, and thriller with "stabby stab" moments but not a full horror film. The plot follows Iris, a robot companion, as she joins her human partner, Josh, for a weekend getaway that quickly turns into chaos. 00:02:06 - The Barbarian Connection Produced by Zach Cregger (Barbarian), along with Roy Lee, J.D. Lipschitz, and Raphael Margolis. Cregger was originally set to direct but handed the project to Hancock. Shares some tonal shifts and unexpected turns similar to Barbarian. 00:03:59 - A Surprisingly Funny Movie Marketed as horror, but the film has strong comedic elements. Michael stopped watching the trailer halfway because it reveals too much. Despite its darker themes, the humor is well-placed and helps with pacing. 00:04:26 - The Cast & Performances Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets, Heretic) as Iris – A standout performance. Jack Quaid (The Boys) as Josh – A departure from his usual roles, making him unrecognizable compared to his character Huey in The Boys. Lucas Gage (Euphoria, The White Lotus) as Patrick – Cast as the “pretty guy.” Megan Suri (It Lives Inside, Never Have I Ever) as Kat – A complex role. Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows) as Eli – Comedic powerhouse, but hard not to see him as Guillermo. Rupert Friend (The Death of Stalin, Homeland) as Sergei – A mix of comedic and sinister. 00:12:51 - Cinematography, Editing & Directing Eli Bourne handles cinematography, giving the film an intimate, isolated feel. Michael praises the film's pacing and editing, crediting Josh Ether for helping keep the story sharp. The location scouting is excellent, contributing to the film's eerie atmosphere. 00:13:15 - The “Eat the Rich” Subgenre Comparison Companion shares *similarities with films like The Menu and Triangle of Sadness. Though not a direct critique of wealth, the film hints at class and power dynamics. 00:14:00 - January as a “Dumping Ground” for Movies Companion was released in early 2024, a time studios often use to release movies they're unsure how to market. Despite this, the film is better than most January releases and deserves more recognition. Themes & Analysis 00:28:05 - Toxic Relationships & Power Imbalances Core theme: How control, manipulation, and exploitation manifest in relationships—both human and AI. Companion raises questions about agency and autonomy, especially in imbalanced relationships. 00:29:25 - Gender & Objectification Iris represents the struggles of real-world women who fight for autonomy in male-dominated spaces. Historically, women were seen as property—a dynamic mirrored in Iris's role as a “companion.” 00:30:51 - The Film's Unique Take on AI Representation Unlike many AI films that focus on “Pinocchio syndrome” (wanting to be real), Companion focuses on how people treat objects that can think and feel. Dave argues that the film doesn't necessarily “humanize” Iris, but Michael strongly disagrees, saying she's treated as an individual from the start. 00:37:12 - The Relationship Between Josh & Iris A perfect example of a toxic relationship. Josh gaslights and controls Iris, using his “love” as a justification for ownership. Parallels to real-life relationships where one partner holds all the power. 00:39:38 - Eli & Patrick: Love or Control? Eli & Patrick's relationship is framed as genuine, but Eli literally has a kill switch for Patrick. Raises the question: Can there ever be real love when there's an extreme power imbalance? 00:45:12 - Kat: A Different Kind of User Kat manipulates Sergei for money, just as Josh uses Iris for companionship. Unlike Josh, Kat is honest about her self-serving nature—making her an interesting contrast. Her conversation with Iris about feeling “disposable” adds emotional depth to her character. 00:48:43 - Josh's Downfall & The Role of Technology Josh's death by an automatic corkscrew is a symbol of his reliance on technology and the loss of control he thought he had. Technology and control are central themes—whether AI, smart devices, or old-school CD players. Verdict & Ratings 01:14:40 - Final Thoughts & Scores Dave: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5) - “One of the best AI movies in recent years.” Michael: ⭐⭐⭐½ - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (3.5 - 4/5) - “Great performances, strong pacing, and an excellent directorial debut.” 01:20:00 - Why You Should See Companion Companion is in limited theatrical release, so see it before it's gone! Despite marketing challenges, it's one of the best films of early 2024. Closing Notes & Where to Watch Companion is currently in wide release but may leave theaters soon. Mindframes encourages listeners to share their thoughts via email.

Comedians Carl Ruiz Sherrod Small 1/30 I now cherish the last year of radio I did especially with the passing of my dear friends Carl Ruiz and Vic Henley. I was able to come to the realization why I went into radio all those years ago. It was for the fun and pure joy of it. The last year was filled with ugliness, drama and a ton of laughter. Me, Carl Ruiz, Vic Henley and Sherrod Small had the time of our lives on and off the radio show. Our close friendships was on full display. The last year also saw Carl Ruiz blossom into a superstar which led me to do the Opie Radio podcast with him. A special thanks to Erock, Clubsoda Kenny, Paul and Louis for going on this ride with us. Hope you enjoy the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of the last year of radio I did. #comedypodcast #funnypodcast #opieandanthonySee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What happens when you take one of Hollywood's most popular on-screen couples at the time and pin them against each other in a movie about divorce? Thirty-five years ago, newly minted director (and co-star) Danny DeVito was apparently the first to attempt to answer that question....and he did so with the big-time movie star pairing which he had co-starred recently in two popular romantic action comedies (Romancing the Stone, Jewel of the Nile). That would be Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner who play Oliver and Barbara Rose....they were once madly in love but apparently one of them no longer feels that way. :o And what results is a dark, nasty, violent, AND quite funny cautionary tale of what happens when two former lovebirds stop getting polite....and start going to war....all within the house they share no less! ;) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Hooking your audience is one thing, but keeping them emotionally invested in your content is another. So for this episode of Remarkable, we're taking marketing lessons on doing just that from the Irish dark comedy, Bad Sisters. It's a show about four sisters who plot to kill their diabolical brother-in-law, and the season starts with his funeral.Series creator, Sharon Horgan, says, “We had to keep an audience with us for 10 episodes and keep them wanting the same outcome." That is, the death of their brother-in-law, John Paul. So with the help of our special guest, D2L CMO Brian Finnerty, we're talking about hooking your audience, knowing your target, and doing trial and error. About our guest, Brian FinnertyBrian Finnerty is a B2B marketing specialist with over 25 years experience leading enterprise marketing teams. He currently serves as CMO at D2L. His expertise includes brand strategy, B2B demand generation, and global customer acquisition from mid-market to Fortune 500. He previously served as VP of Revenue Marketing for Udacity. Prior to joining Udacity, Brian served as VP of Growth Marketing at Demandbase, where he was responsible for demand generation, field marketing, and customer marketing at Demandbase. Brian has also been a marketing leader at two ad tech companies, Marin Software and Smaato. He co-founded an e-learning startup that specialized in software developer training, with a rules-based code judging engine. He is an active Customer Advisory Board member for both 6sense and Sendoso. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Bad Sisters:Start with a hook. Bad Sisters grabs viewers' attention because it's about four sisters plotting to kill their brother-in-law, and it starts with his funeral. So the question is: “How did he die?” This is what drives viewers to keep watching. So how can you get your audience invested in your content? What question do you want to inspire them to ask?Know your target. This is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but just like the sisters truly knew their brother-in-law and all the ways they could potentially do him in, so should marketers get to know their audience so they can appeal to them. Brian says, “The sisters do a lot of research and they really know their target audience. Like, what does JP like to eat? What does he like to drink? If you were to poison him, how would you do that? So they really do research, like, ‘What are the ways that we can do this and get away with it, and free our sister from the prison of her marriage?' So they really do their kind of their targeting and their research, which I think any good marketer does.”Do trial and error. Try different marketing strategies and keep dialing it in based on data you get from the tests. Brian says, “[The sisters] do that right throughout the show. Like, they're testing ways to bump this guy off. Some of them end in sort of miserable failure and some of them have some potential of succeeding and you're never quite sure. Not unlike a lot of digital campaigns, where you're trying to find that perfect balance and the right approach.”Quotes*”I think for marketers, if you're not pushing the envelope, testing new messaging and testing new approaches to your website, conversion, optimization, your customer journey, your buyer's journey, then you're not trying hard enough. You're not getting enough data from the market to optimize and improve.”*”In a B2B context, it is tough to really identify a villain. And that kind of marketing turns me off. Some companies will identify their competitors as villains and really go after them. As a marketer, I would say instead of identifying your competitors as a villain, which I think is a mistake, you look at either the cost of doing nothing, or like, ‘What is the counterpoint to your mission?'”Time Stamps[0:55] Meet Brian Finnerty, CMO at D2L[3:02] D2L and Brian's Role as CMO[4:04] How Bad Sisters was created[9:30] Authenticity and Cultural Representation[22:18] B2B Marketing Takeaways from Bad Sisters[22:21] The Importance of a Good Hook[23:00] Research and Targeting in Marketing[24:08] Trial and Error in Marketing[28:30] Creating a Great Villain[33:48] Brand and Content Strategy[36:10] Effective Content Marketing[38:34] Leveraging Content Across Teams[42:58] Favorite Campaigns and Final AdviceLinksConnect with Brian on LinkedInLearn more about D2LAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Celebrate Gene! When listener Mike T. heard Shat The Movies desperately wanted to cover "Withnail and I," he stepped up with the funds to make it happen. On its surface, "Withnail and I" is a simple movie about two out-of-work actors navigating the bleak landscape of 1960s England. Big D didn't realize it was the 1960s; he just thought England looks like that. But this cult classic inspired millions—including Gene Lyons—with its sharp wit, unforgettable quotes and rich character study. In this episode, the Shat Crew dissects the film's themes of friendship, disillusionment and the struggle for identity, all while celebrating the iconic performances of Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann.
