Today, I'm thrilled to announce my interview with legendary playwright Sarah Ruhl. Tune in to hear some of the stories of her legendary career, including her experience breaking the fourth wall in EURYDICE, telling her own story in LETTERS FROM MAX, watching the audience response to IN THE NEXT ROOM, teaching at the Yale School of Drama, addressing addiction in BECKY NURSE OF SALEM, exploring Virginia Woolf's portrayal of gender in ORLANDO, the advice she got from Paula Vogel, doing research to create the three parts of PASSION PLAY, exploring Chekhov's writing when adapting THE THREE SISTERS, how a writing exercise led to HOW TO TRANSCEND A HAPPY MARRIAGE, passing the torch to Philip Howze, turning MELANCHOLY PLAY into a musical, telling a metatheatrical story in STAGE KISS, and so much more. Don't miss this wide-ranging conversation with a brilliant writer.
Eurydice Dixon was a 22‑year‑old Melbourne comedian who was attacked while walking home through Princes Park on the night of 12–13 June 2018. She had just finished performing at a comedy show when she was followed for more than an hour by 19‑year‑old Jaymes Todd, who assaulted and killed her in the park. Eurydice's death sparked national grief and a widespread conversation about women's safety in public spaces across Australia. Click here to join our Patreon. Click here to get your own Inhuman merch. Long before therapists' couches or self-help books, music was the original soul-medicine — a divine force capable of shaping character, harmonising societies, and even bending the fabric of reality itself. In this episode of Domina Tempora, we journey across ancient civilisations to uncover how music was revered as far more than entertainment. From the earliest playable flutes unearthed at Jiahu in China (7000–5700 BC) and Minoan lyres on Crete, to the profound teachings of Plato and the Yue Ji in China, we explore how music was seen as essential for forming the soul and cultivating virtue. We meet the legendary musicians who wielded its power: Orpheus, whose songs could charm beasts, move stones, and nearly conquer death itself — only to lose Eurydice forever when doubt made him look back. His music soothed Hades, inspired mystery rites, and gave birth to the Orphic way of life. Across the seas, we encounter Narada, the divine troubadour of Hindu tradition, whose veena and devotional hymns carried enlightenment, bhakti, and cosmic knowledge between gods and mortals. And in ancient China, we discover Ling Lun and Kui, who tuned the world to the cries of phoenixes and the rhythms of harmony under the Yellow Emperor. From ritual protection of the infant Zeus on Delos to the first orchestras that brought spirits and humans into accord, this episode reveals music as a sacred technology — magical, moral, and transformative. If tales of divine passion, forbidden desire, and the power of ancient forces stir something deep within you, step into the world of my debut novel Clotho Unbound. In its pages, Clotho — the Fate who has spun death for Zeus for eons — finds her threads entangled with Aphrodite in stolen, blasphemous nights that make the Loom of Fate tremble. Their love is treason. Their passion could unravel destiny itself.Clotho Unbound is out now and available to order on Amazon (Kindle, paperback, and audiobook coming soon).Grab your copy today:https://www.amazon.com/Clotho-Unbound-Marianne-Fisher/dp/B0GTZ8PZFVThank you for listening.Until next time — may your strings stay in tune and your threads hold strong.

It was a Good Week yet again for Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, the darling of the global left, who threw a party for… the global left. And it was a Bad Week for the legendary German electronic band Kraftwerk, who apparently have been around since 1970(!) and therefore can withstand the occasional bad week. We also caught up with Greek investigative reporter Eurydice Bersi, who was part of a team that uncovered a slew of streamers on places like YouTube and Twitch who've been directing their followers to unlicensed gambling sites – and profiting off it. Eurydice is a reporter with Reporters United, Investigate Europe's partners in Greece. Join us for What Stayed, a live Season Two gathering. March 31 · Virtual · Free · Limited spots · konu.org/eventsMindfulness has become respectable. It improves focus. It reduces stress. It helps leaders perform under pressure. But what if mindfulness isn't primarily about performance? In this episode of On the Balcony, Michael Koehler sits down with Dr. Matthias Birk—organizational psychologist, executive coach, former Global Head of Coaching & Advisory at Goldman Sachs, Global Director of Partner Development at White & Case, Zen teacher, and founder of Self-Transcendent Leadership. What unfolds is not a conversation about mindfulness as a productivity tool. It's a conversation about perspective.Matthias distinguishes between what he calls within-paradigm mindfulness—using meditation to cope more skillfully within the identity you already inhabit—and beyond-paradigm mindfulness, which loosens that identity altogether. One reduces suffering within the game. The other questions the game itself. At the heart of the episode is a passage from Rainer Maria Rilke:Be forever dead in Eurydice, singingly rise, praisingly rise, back into pure relation. Here, among the vanishing, be—in the realm of demise. Be the pulsating glass, shattered yet of its own vibration. Be—and yet know the non-being's ground, The infinite bottom of your innermost sound. So that you might complete it—this one only time. For Matthias, meditation isn't an accessory to leadership. It's not like playing golf. It's about being fully alive in the here and now—and discovering what remains when achievement, anxiety, and identity begin to soften. What You'll Explore in This EpisodeMeditation before it was fashionable Matthias began practicing Zen as a teenager, long before mindfulness entered corporate vocabulary.Within-paradigm vs. beyond-paradigm mindfulness Mindfulness can help you manage stress inside demanding roles. But it can also invite you to question who you are beyond those roles.Achievement and insecurity From McKinsey to Goldman Sachs to global leadership, Matthias reflects candidly on ambition and belonging—and how meditation shifted his relationship to that inner voice.Self-transcendence Drawing on Abraham Maslow's later work, Matthias explores what it means to move beyond ego-centered striving toward expression, service, and alignment with something larger.Leadership as expression What if leadership isn't about constructing a persona—but about listening deeply enough to express what's already there, this one only time?Quotes from This Episode"Meditation is not a hobby. It's not like playing golf. It's not something you do on the side. It is about being fully alive in the here and now." — Dr. Matthias Birk"If you don't brush your teeth, they're going to rot. If you don't brush your mind, it's going to come up with not great stuff." — Dr. Matthias Birk"The real benefit of mindfulness is that you can live a free life." — Dr. Matthias Birk"One of the saddest things is to live a life and never hear your innermost sound." — Dr. Matthias BirkLinks & ResourcesSelf-Transcendent Leadership — Dr. Matthias Birk https://www.self-transcendent.com/Publications & Articles by Dr. Matthias Birk https://www.matthiasbirk.com/publicationsSelected...
Dante has now crossed Lethe and is ready to face Beatrice head on. She has moved to get ready for this eye-to-eye conversation. Tonight's reading is drawn from Book X, Fable I of Ovid's Metamorphoses — the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. After Eurydice's death, Orpheus descends into the underworld and is granted a single, fragile mercy: he may lead her back to the living world, provided he does not look back until they have crossed fully into the light. What follows is not a story about disobedience, but about devotion under strain — about love asked to endure silence, uncertainty, and distance without reassurance. This is a soft-spoken, live-ish reading offered as part of our 28 Nights of Dark Devotion — a series exploring love, longing, sacrifice, and return in their quieter, shadowed forms.

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit stayorgo.substack.comThis week, I'm inviting you into a quieter, more intimate conversation. After a month filled with heavier topics—ADHD, misogyny, and partner violence—I found myself needing to pause. This episode emerged from that space. There's no outline, no script—just me, speaking from the heart. In it, I explore what it means to stay grounded as a deeply sensitive person in an increasingly fractured world. I reflect on a local production of Hadestown that unexpectedly cracked something open in me, illuminating the profound choice we face between fear and trust. We follow the tragic story of Orpheus and Eurydice, and what it reveals about how easily doubt can derail us—even when we are on the cusp of something beautiful. If you are navigating the unknown, especially in the realm of divorce or deep personal change, I believe you'll resonate with this idea: that trusting your soul's call, even when you can't yet see where it leads, is itself the act of creating a new world. And that turning back, out of fear or uncertainty, is something we all understand—and still, we get to begin again. This episode is both a personal check-in and a wider call to all of us doing the brave work of building something new. Whether you're in a place of exhaustion, reflection, or decision, I hope this conversation offers you a quiet companion on the path forward.Show NotesSubscribe to Stay or Go on SubstackQ&A with Anaïs Mitchell (writer & composer of Hadestown) and Rachel Chavkin (director of Hadestown)Hades TownJourney of Souls - Dr. Michael NewtonText 90MIN to 33777 to book a 90-Minute Session with me. ✨Text STAYORGOCOMMUNITY to 33777 to join the community. ⚡️Text EMAILME to 33777 for the free tarot guide using ChatGPT.

Today marks what would have been the 30th birthday of Eurydice Dixon, the Melbourne comedian, daughter, and friend who was stalked, raped, and murdered in a city park seven years ago. Her murder, like those of Jill Meagher and Samantha Murphy, highlights the quiet fear shared amongst women across Australia. We remember Eurydice, share a message from her father on this difficult day, and call for a reckoning in policy and prevention to stop violence against women. This week on the final P&P film reviews of the 2025 season, we begin with the Peanuts as we lament the losses of the Tigers and Cubs in the post-season. In Popcorn, we have two excellent movies to review, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976), by John Cassavetes, and the retelling of the Greek myth, Orpheus and Eurydice, Black Orpheus (1959). We will also recap the list of films we've reviewed this year ahead of the third Annual “Poppie” awards next week to close out the 2025 season.

Edwin Jonker is acteur.
The Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown is a fantastic retelling of the myths of Orpheus' journey to the Underworld to rescue Eurydice alongside the marriage of Hades and Persephone, set amidst the visual and musical elements of New Orleans during the 1920s and 1930s. On this episode, we visit with guitarist, songwriter, and producer Sam Wade, who has been on the road with the traveling version of this stunning musical for most of the last year and will continue in that role again next year. Wade has been a friend and collaborator of ours for a few years. He has produced a few songs for my wife, Michelle Lynn Thompson, including her song “Riptide.” (Listen closely for an instrumental snippet in the background of this episode.) He will also be joining me (JJT) for my set at the Audiofeed festival this summer and backing up Michelle for hers as well. We jumped at the chance to see him and the rest of the company in action with Hadestown when they came through Chattanooga recently, and to catch up with him to see what it's been like to travel with a production like this. For more information, including a list of all of the songs used in this episode, visit the show notes page at TrueTunes.com/Hadestown If you want to support the show, please join our Patreon community or drop us a one-time tip and check out our MERCH!
One of the major beauties of the summer sky dangles in the northeast this evening like a piece of cosmic jewelry – the constellation Lyra. Its brightest star is Vega – the fifth-brightest star in the night sky. It sparkles like the diamond stud in an earring. The rest of Lyra hangs to its lower right like the rest of the earring. It forms a parallelogram – a slanted rectangle. Under fairly dark skies, it’s easy to see. Lyra represents a lyre – a small harp. In skylore, it was sometimes shown being held by a large bird – an eagle or vulture. In fact, the name “Vega” comes from an Arabic phrase that means “the falling eagle.” But mainly the lyre was associated with the story of Orpheus. His music was legendary. When he accompanied Jason and the Argonauts, his playing silenced the Sirens – evil creatures who lured sailors to their doom. Orpheus married Eurydice. But she was bitten by a snake and died. Orpheus begged Hades, the god of the underworld, to let Eurydice return to him. His music was so beautiful that Hades agreed. But there was one condition: Orpheus couldn’t look back until they were outside. But he couldn’t resist – he looked too soon, and Eurydice vanished into the underworld forever. Orpheus was heart-broken. He roamed aimlessly across the countryside, playing sad but beautiful music on his lyre – an instrument commemorated in the stars. We’ll have more about Vega tomorrow. At the age of 25, Eva Noblezada is a two time Tony Award nominee, a Grammy Award winner, and a WhatsOnStage Award winning actress and singer. She starred as Kim in Cameron Mackintosh's London revival of Miss Saigon when she was 17 years old, and shortly after played Eponine in the West End revival of Les Misérables. Eva later reprised her performance as Kim in the first Broadway revival of Miss Saigon (also her Broadway debut). In 2019, she made her film debut in Yellow Rose starring alongside Lea Salonga, who originated the role of Kim in Miss Saigon. Eva originated the role of Eurydice in Hadestown on Broadway, and it's in Hadestown where she continues to lead, and take audiences “way down under the ground”. Eva speaks candidly about her past toxic relationship with the word “perfect”, how it affected her life as a 17 year old all on her own abroad, leading Cameron Mackintosh's London revival of Miss Saigon, and why she felt like she was “falling for years”. She opens up about living with anxiety, panic attacks, and body dysmorphia, and how she's learned to come back to herself at those times, and ask the important questions - “Are we in danger? - We're okay”. Talking about Hadestown, Eva shares her thoughts on Eurydice (and playing Eurydice), and her love for the “extra layer of consciousness” that can be seen throughout the whole show. In this episode, we talk about: Growing up Filipino Mexican, and discovering musical theater A strong work ethic, instilled by her father The mental and physical toll of an 8 show schedule Meeting Tara Rubin at the Jimmy Awards Pole dancing as fitness, and how society sexualizes women Her “all or nothing” way of life Connect with Eva: IG: @livevamaria Twitter: @EvaNoblezada Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com.
