He is enjoying his own financial independence by writing, speaking, and coaching doctors into a better financial position while he and his wife, of 30 years, explore the world. He is here telling us all about one of his latest trips to the Camino de Santiago in Spain. This trail is a walking pilgrimage that has its roots in the Middle Ages. It runs from Pamplona to Santiago, Spain and is a 450-mile adventure that Cory did with his wife and their backpacks. Amazing! In today’s episode, we discuss: Why he and his wife decided to take this 38 day walk across Spain. How the movie, "The Way" helped convince them to do the trip. This is a medieval pilgrimage route that was originally done to bury Saint James in a church at the end of the route. Tip: You can download apps on your phone for each pathway on the journey. All of the physical preparation they did ahead of time to prepare for the trip. The hostel type lodging (Albergue) that they stayed at along the way. The trail passport and how you get it stamped along the way. How you get a certificate at the end showing you completed the trek. The different people they met along the way and how it differed depending on what part of the trail you were on. Where they ate along the way and what kinds of foods they enjoyed. Tip: Bring cash for this trip since most places in small towns don’t take credit. How the Spanish siesta culture affected them on the trip. Safety tips on the trail and if they felt safe during the length of the trip. How the trail can be very moving and what it’s like to go to church at the end. Tip: Audio books can be helpful along the way to pass the time. What the bathroom situation was like along the way. Tip: Every town had free water fountains so it was easy to fill your bottle anytime. How they made it for 7 weeks with only two outfits and three pairs of underwear. Why they decided not to use their phones, watch news or go on social media. Minimalism and how the trip has inspired them to not have so many things. How the journey can be made in many different ways based on location and travel preferences. Tip: There are services that will transport your bags for you each day. Today, I revisited the topic physician burnout and looking at the numbers at who is suffering and what the causes are. Specifically, Medscape published its 2019 Survey of Physician Burnout, Depression, & Suicide that dives deep into the demographics and causes of the phenomena. However, what was notably absent from the possible causes for burnout was financial matters. What effect does a high personal debt have on physician well being? And if it is a problem, as my guest believes, how can you find your out of debt to improve your psyche as a physician? My guest today is Dr. Cory S. Fawcett, who is a recently retired general surgeon and award winning author, helps me dive into the numbers of the survey. Unfortunately, the numbers are sobering. Burnout is a real problem in medicine for physicians and the causes - according to the survey - are the ones you would expect that we have covered in the show before. They are: bureaucratic hassles, electronic health record, and long hours worked. Women suffer at a rate of 50% and men at 38% I suspect because of the roles that the sexes play in our society leaving more stressors of the family on the shoulders of the female professionals. However, as Dr. Fawcett points out, one important question on the form that wasn't listed as a cause were personal finances. Debt, he suggests, is an extremely intense stressor for professionals that encourages them to do extra work, work longer, and maybe even work in a field or job they wouldn't have chosen if they weren't facing six figure debt loads. He argues that perhaps the best way of getting burnout under control in medicine is by controlling debt and eliminating it completely. He has written three books on how to control your finances as a physician by focusing on starting a career right, eliminating debt, and finding ways to get other sources of income for retirement. His book on eliminating debt is the one we focused on in this episode and describes a practical step by step guide to how to knock out your debt and bring you some real financial peace.
