Hello to you Lorraine, listening in Corona del Mar, California!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more for a story) for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. It was early morning when I lifted the shade and looked out the airplane window at the brown, mid-September harvested fields of Spain below me, stretching as far as the eye could see. I felt sick, gut-clenching, breath-holding, throat-constricting sick. What a stupid idea! What was I thinking! How ridiculous, foolish even, to even imagine that I could walk across Spain - alone - as a pilgrim - with nothing more than a backpack and a guide book. Who was I kidding? As the plane began its descent into Madrid, I had already made up my mind that I could not, should not, and would not walk the Camino de Santiago. I was no pilgrim. I would pick up my backpack and catch the next flight. I was going back home. What happened next? Tucked between the pages of the guide book I was holding was an envelope and in the envelope a short message from my story galpal, Lorraine. Her first words were “WELL DONE!”Her words continued: As you read this thousands of feet above the earth (and how could she have known that?) you may be wondering why I gave you a “WELL DONE!” card to start your Camino de Santiago journey. Regardless of what does or doesn't happen from here on out, you will be forever changed simply because you showed up. And that, my friend, is “WELL DONE!”What could I do? What would you do?The plane descended, taxied to the Madrid Airport gate, and I disembarked with the rest of the passengers. I found my way to baggage claim, through customs, and out of the terminal looking for the bus that would take me across Madrid to the station for the train to Pamplona where I over-nighted before taking another bus to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to finally begin my Camino de Santiago. I walked out of France, over the Pyrenees Mountains, into Spain, and then 500 miles on foot to Santiago.Since then I say my life is BC & AC: Before Camino and After Camino. Not a day goes by that I don't recall my pilgrimage, relying on the kindness of strangers, and the unforgettable words that gave me the courage to set out: WELL DONE!Story Prompt: Who gave you a hand up when you needed it most and expected it least? What happened next? Write that story and tell it out loud!Thank you for listening! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us!

Właściwie to cała sieć szlaków prowadzących do Santiago de Compostela, którą w 2024 przeszło 0,5 mln osób. A w tym roku będzie więcej. Na czym polega fenomen Camino? Jaka jest historia tego szlaku? Jak wygląda jego przejście od strony praktycznej? W dwóch odcinkach o Camino dowiecie się wszystkiego, a nawet dużo więcej - jaką rolę w promocji dróg jakubowych odegrali Paulo Coelho i jedyny słuszny papież? Czym są europejskie szlaki kulturowe? Czego dotyczyła kradzież stulecia w Galicji? I czemu w Galicji zamiast tańczyć flamenco grają na dudach?
Hello to you listening for a call to belong to who you are however imperfect!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga.I am done waiting for perfect clarity to claim my place in this world. We've been told that doing equals worth, that we must have it all figured out to deserve our place at the table. But here's what I know: it's not about arriving perfect—it's about showing up authentic.I showed up to walk 500 miles of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, learning breath by breath, heartbeat by heartbeat, step by step. I figured it out mile by messy imperfect mile. Here's what else I know: you can't claim your kingdom hiding in the castle. I'm stepping out of my castle, crown askew, declaring myself ready to go as an elder woman summoning other elder women into our tribe of Whidbey Island Witches. We wield magic through stories. We refuse to let our voices be diminished. No more waiting for permission. We say what we mean and mean what we say. We create a ruckus and make “good trouble” not because we have all the answers, but because we have what the world needs: our questions, rage, tenderness, truth, and collective wisdom. We're figuring out how to create a world of harmony, integrity, kindness, and justice—a world designed for all of us, not just the chosen few. It will be messy, imperfect, courageous, brave, and bold! Join us!Story Prompt: What about you? What would happen if you stepped out of your castle, crown askew, ready to figure it out as you go? O no. ¡Hasta siempre!
Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
This is it; the final days on my Camino trip in Spain. We cover the final four days, as well as interviews with Dave, plus Beth and Andrew from the Appalachian Trail. Next week, we'll be back to normal!
For the first time on the Globetrotters Podcast, we're joined by a pastor — or rather, a former pastor. Douglas Brouwer spent 45 years in ministry across the U.S. and Europe, leading mission trips, cultural tours, and walking solo pilgrimages across Spain and Portugal. But this conversation goes beyond religion — into longing, identity, and what it really means to find home through travel. It's a deeper, more reflective kind of episode — one that explores the spiritual side of movement in ways we haven't before.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/globetrotters-podcast--5023679/support.

What happens when you encounter both the best and worst versions of yourself on the same path? Bradley Chermside, international best-selling author, entertainer, and host of the El Camino de Santiago Podcast shares his transformative journey. Clare meets a man who completely changed his life after walking the Camino de Santiago. Andrea Abbatemarco is originally from Milan, and first completed The Way in 2005 in memory of a friend who died a year earlier in the Indian Ocean tsunami. A few years later, he walked it again with his girlfriend and just a matter of months after returning to Italy, they packed up their lives, bought a house along the Camino, and now run a hostel for pilgrims. The Camino de Santiago is a network of footpaths that run across western Europe, all converging upon the Cathedral at Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain. One of these trails is the Sanabrés which begins in Granja de Moreruela and stretches for around 225 miles to Santiago de Compostela. Clare met Andrea on the Sanabrés, around 30km out of Santiago where he runs Casa Leiras, an Albergue, or hostel, specifically designed for Camino pilgrims. Joining them is Manni Coe, a guide who leads walks on the Sanabrés, who's known Andrea for years. Manni also featured in episode one of this series which is entirely themed around the Camino.Presenter: Clare Balding Producer: Karen Gregor
Your host is Bradley Chermside, author of international bestselling Camino de Santiago memoir, The Only Way Is West. Bradley has walked the Camino Frances, Camino Portuguese and the Camino Inglés. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
Past the two-week mark and into the Meseta, the journey continues with intimate conversation, communal meals, and changing, yet still beautiful scenery. We also catch up with Beth and Andrew as they move on from Trail Days.
Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
The Meseta is about to end and I'm about to head south for a few days for a family party. The break has come at a good time to help my feet recover from a pounding. Beth and Andrew take responsibility for Rufus, a bowling ball. Weird? Yep.
Send Jay comments via textWhat if your most profound life lessons could come from an unexpected journey? In this inspiring episode, I explore how my recent walk along the Camino de Santiago in Spain became a powerful metaphor for navigating the empty nest years—filled with surprises, deep connections, and personal growth.Walking the Portuguese route with strangers from around the world pushed me beyond my comfort zone, revealing that the richest experiences often come from embracing detours rather than rushing to the finish line. When faced with a challenging climb, a simple question from a friend—"What's the rush?"—became a guiding wisdom for embracing the present moment. The true magic of the Camino was found in the connections formed along the way. Brief conversations with fellow pilgrims sparked feelings of transformation, and our nightly ritual of sharing a "crumb" (challenge) and "cookie" (joy) strengthened resilience and gratitude—key components proven to boost mental well-being during major transitions.Through rain and sunshine, I discovered that each traveler brought unique "superpowers," from authenticity to embracing new experiences, inspiring me to pursue my dreams while savoring life's small moments. This journey taught me that necessary endings—like children leaving home or finishing a long walk—create space for new beginnings. What's your Camino? Whether it's a new hobby, career change, or inner exploration, your next big adventure awaits. Take that first step—your most meaningful journey might be just around the corner. When you're ready to craft a fulfilling new chapter, visit thisemptynestlife.com to learn how I can support you in designing a life full of purpose and joy.Highlights & Key Takeaways:Embrace detours over rushing — slowing down creates space for growth.Deepen connections through shared vulnerability and gratitude practices.Recognize the unique strengths ("superpowers") each person brings to your journey.Mindfulness in everyday moments fuels profound self-discovery.Necessary endings open doors for exciting new beginnings.Join me on this journey of self-discovery, and maybe find your own Camino to fulfillment.Support the showFREE WORKBOOK3 Steps to Loving Your Empty Nest Life ENJOY THE SHOW?Don't miss an episode, subscribe via Apple Podcasts or follow on Spotify and many more. This is a very special series of Ramblings. To mark Clare's 25th year of presenting Radio 4's walking programme she is off to Spain to fulfil her long held desire of hiking one of the world's most famous pilgrimage footpaths, the Camino de Santiago. Translated roughly as The Way of St. James, the Camino isn't just one route, rather it's a network of trails across western Europe converging on Santiago de Compostela, the reputed burial place of St. James. Clare's first companion is Manni Coe. He first walked the Camino 22 years ago with his brother Reuben, following the Francés, or French, path. This is probably the most famous route, which starts in the French town of St Jean Pied de Port. Reuben has Down's Syndrome and Manni recalls their journey together as the most magical yet challenging time of their lives. Manni now lives in Spain and works as a tour guide, including leading pilgrims along the Sanabrés which begins in Granja de Moreruela and stretches around 225 miles to Santiago. Manni is also an author about to publish his second book, ‘Little Ruins'. As he explains to Clare, the simple act of walking has been invaluable in enabling him to complete this personal project which is about recovery from childhood trauma. This is the second time Clare has walked with Manni: search in our episodes list for ‘Brotherly Love in Burton Bradstock' to hear Manni and Reuben walking in Dorset. No notes but an extended catch up with Dave as well as my latest exploits on the Camino
WHEN HEALING TAKES PLACE ON THE PILGRIMAGE TRAIL I hope you are ready to be inpsired, because today I have the compelling after-the-Camino story of US veteran Paul who walked the Camino last October with the life-changing program offered by Warriors on the Way. (https://warriorsontheway.org/) Warriors on the Way is a pilgrimage on the Camino De Santiago that is designed to facilitate a combat veteran's healing from PTSD and Moral Injury. This program works to reduce PTSD and Moral Injury symptoms, which in turn improves quality of life and helps in the effort to reduce the veteran suicide rate. The pilgrimage is led by Fr Steven Rindahl (US Army, Retired), who is an experienced pilgrim. Fr Steve has designed this pilgrimage based on his own pilgrimage experiences and supported by his doctorate in responding to combat trauma and through the US Army Chaplaincy course he developed and taught on how to provide a Ministerial Response to Moral Injury. Hello to you listening in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. The Camino de Santiago de Compostella is fairly well marked with yellow arrows painted by volunteers and images of scallop shells pointing the way West. But every once in a while - like life - the way is unclear, unmarked, hidden even. You can get lost. I learned this the hard way. Now what? You must stop and listen to your own voice. Silence the noise, the chatter, the distractions about which way to go. Your own knowing will help you out when you ask. And your guidebook. And your experience. Breathe. Quiet. Listen. Choose. Walk on. Eventually the Camino taught me that there is always a yellow arrow; but it might not be where I was looking.Story Prompt: When have you walked your way from lost into the clear? What happened next? Write that story! Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something. All that matters is you have a story. You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! Professor Brian Doak talks with the Director of the Center for Study Abroad at George Fox University, David Martínez, about travel strategies: spontaneity or careful planning? Overpacking or minimalism? Frequent moving or putting down deep roots? David advocates for slowness in both travel and living, and Brian shares his most recent "travel miracle".Matthew 10:9-10“Don't take any money in your money belts—no gold, silver, or even copper coins. Hello to you listening in Mumbai, India!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.Walking the Camino de Santiago was miles and more miles. 500 of them. No matter how many I had walked, there were still more to walk. Uphill, across hot, dry plains, and then the rains in the mountains that turned everything to muck and ankle-twisting rubble. I kept hearing “Just goes to show you, it's always something! If it ain't one thing it's another!” a mantra about life from Gilda Radner's father, for her SNL character Roseanne Roseannadanna. The voice in my head asked: “Well, Diane, what did you expect? You're walking a pilgrimage. Beyond the miles are more miles.”A TIP: I had to learn that the way out is through. Stop thinking that you will enjoy a trouble-free pilgrimage. Dive into the audacity of what you've chosen to do! Let go of trying to get free of the aches and pains, complications, limitations, and disappointments. They are part and parcel of what you said you wanted: to be a pilgrim. These problems are the pilgrimage. Now what? How will you solve them? Don't just start over. Keep starting over. And then look back on what you achieved. Question: What do you do when faced with “It's always something”?Be well, do good work and keep in touch! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! Bonus 8 - Dr. Douglas Brouwer's journey from Western Michigan to the world and back again offers profound insights into how travel shapes our spiritual lives and understanding of home. After spending 40 years serving as a Presbyterian pastor around the globe, Doug's adventures took him from maximum security prisons in Philadelphia to a church in Zurich, Switzerland, where he learned German at age 60. His travels weren't merely about seeing new places but about finding deeper meaning and connection with humanity. The conversation explores Doug's most profound travel experiences, including walking 500 miles along the Camino de Santiago at retirement age. Despite averaging 17 miles daily for 28 days with everything on his back, it was the first night—stranded on a mountainside between France and Spain—that taught him the most powerful lesson about his own limitations. Yet he persevered, meeting fellow pilgrims from around the world who, regardless of religious affiliation, participated in the ancient spiritual rituals along the path. What makes this episode particularly moving is Doug's reflection on the true purpose of all our wandering. After visiting 48 states and countless countries, writing a book called "The Traveler's Path," and experiencing diverse cultures, he found that his heart's true home was back near Lake Michigan where he began. "All of this moving around, all of the searching that people do, I think, is a search for home," he shares with emotion. "Where is it that I belong?"Whether you're planning your next adventure or questioning the meaning of your travels, this conversation will challenge your perspective on what makes journeys worthwhile.
