What do Bigfoot and credit reports have in common? They're each the subject of many myths. We don't know much about 8-foot furry creatures, but we can dispel some of the folklore about credit and credit reports. Neile Simon is here to help us do that today.Neile Simon is a Certified Credit Counselor with Christian Credit Counselors (CCC), an underwriter of Faith & Finance. If you've ever wondered whether closing a credit card boosts your score or if credit counseling hurts your credit, you're not alone. Let's dive into these common misconceptions and separate fact from fiction.Myth #1: Paying Off Debt Instantly Improves Your Credit ScoreIt's a common belief that paying down debt will immediately result in a perfect credit score. However, credit improvement takes time because credit scores are based on your payment history.Reality: Your credit report gives lenders a snapshot of how responsibly you've managed debt over time. Consistently paying bills on time is the best way to build and maintain a strong score—but it won't happen overnight.Tip: Be cautious of anyone claiming they can “fix” your credit instantly. No legitimate company can erase negative (but accurate) information from your credit history overnight.Myth #2: Credit Counseling Destroys Your Credit ScoreMany people worry that seeking credit counseling will harm their credit score.Reality: Enrolling in a credit counseling program is a neutral mark on your credit report and does not directly affect your score. Closing accounts impacts your score, so working with an accredited nonprofit organization is essential to develop a plan that keeps your credit intact. That's why Christian Credit Counselors is the only organization we recommend for credit counseling and debt management. Tip: Avoid paying for expensive credit monitoring or identity protection services. You can monitor your credit for free through reputable sources.Myth #3: Canceling Credit Cards Boosts Your ScoreMany people believe that closing old or unused credit cards is a responsible move, but it can actually hurt their credit scores.Reality: Lenders want to see two or three active credit lines. Closing credit cards reduces your available credit, which can negatively impact your score by increasing your credit utilization ratio (the percentage of available credit you're using).Tip: Keep zero-balance accounts open unless they charge an annual fee. If you must close an account, do so gradually—perhaps one every six months—to minimize the temporary impact on your score.Myth #4: Too Many Inquiries Hurt Your ScoreWhile excessive hard inquiries (when lenders check your credit for a loan or credit card application) can lower your score, not all inquiries count against you.Reality: Credit bureaus recognize rate shopping—for example, when you're comparing mortgage or auto loan rates. If you make multiple inquiries within a 45-day window, they count as one single inquiry, not multiple.Tip: Always shop around for the best loan terms without worrying about multiple hits to your credit score.Myth #5: Checking Your Own Credit Report Hurts Your ScoreMany consumers avoid checking their credit reports because they fear it will negatively impact their scores.Reality: Checking your own credit is a "soft inquiry" and does not affect your score. Only "hard inquiries" (such as applying for a loan or credit card) can impact your score.Tip: Review your credit report every 6–12 months to catch errors or fraud early. Get a free report from AnnualCreditReport.com, the only official site for free credit reports.Myth #6: Credit Scores Are Locked In for Six MonthsSome believe their credit score is only updated periodically, leading to confusion when making financial decisions.Reality: Your credit score is dynamic, meaning it updates as new information is reported—not every six months. Changes in balances, payments, and account activity can impact your score as soon as they are reported by creditors.Tip: If you're working on improving your score, be patient and consistent—your efforts will show over time.Myth #7: If I Pay My Bills on Time, I Don't Need to Check My Credit ReportIt seems logical that paying your bills on time means your credit report is in good shape. But that's not always the case.Reality: 80% of credit reports contain errors. Mistakes like incorrect account information or fraudulent activity can damage your score even if you've never missed a payment.Tip: Check your credit report at least once a year to identify errors and dispute inaccuracies before they hurt your financial standing.Myth #8: All Credit Reports Are the SameMany people assume that if they check one credit report, they've seen them all.Reality: There are three major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—and they all calculate scores differently. Some lenders may pull from only one bureau, while others check all three.Tip: Review reports from all three bureaus to get a complete picture of your credit history and spot discrepancies.Myth #9: A Divorce Decree Automatically Removes You from Joint AccountsDivorce proceedings often divide assets and debts, but that does not automatically separate joint accounts.Reality: If you and your former spouse share a loan or credit account, both of you remain responsible for the debt—even if a court assigns the balance to one person.Tip: To protect yourself, close joint accounts or refinance loans to remove your ex-spouse's name. Simply relying on a court order won't protect your credit.Myth #10: Bad Marks Automatically Disappear After Seven YearsMany assume that negative information automatically falls off their report after seven years, but it's more complicated than that.Reality: Some items, like Chapter 7 bankruptcies, remain on your report for 10 years, while Chapter 13 bankruptcies stay for seven years. Paid-off accounts in good standing can remain for 10 years, which benefits your credit history.Tip: If you have negative marks on your report, focus on building positive credit habits to minimize their impact over time.Myth #11: I Can Pay Someone to “Fix” My CreditCredit repair companies often promise quick fixes, but many of their claims are misleading.Reality: No company can legally remove accurate negative information from your credit report. If a debt is legitimately yours, it will stay on your report until its expiration date.Tip: You can dispute errors yourself for free. Christian Credit Counselors provides free resources and sample dispute letters to help you correct inaccuracies. The Truth About Credit ReportsUnderstanding your credit report and score is essential for financial success. By debunking these myths, you can take control of your credit and make informed financial decisions.Check your credit report regularly for errorsKeep credit card accounts open to maintain a strong scoreShop around for loans without worrying about multiple inquiriesWork with trusted advisors, not credit repair scamsIf you're struggling with credit card debt, Christian Credit Counselors can help. I'm in school for one more year and have had to draw $1,000-$2,000 from the line every couple of months to cover expenses. My interest rate is 2.6%. Watch the YouTube version of this episode HEREAre you a firm owner who is struggling with layoffs? In this episode, Jim and Tyson discuss the difficult layoffs as well as the tough reality of letting people go due to a downturn in business.Jim and Tyson delve into the reasons why layoffs occur. Jim identifies the issue with spreading yourself too thin, in which too many responsibilities are given to too many people, when it doesn't have to be that way. Consolidating where necessary is a good way to keep responsibilities simple and not lead to paying for more employees when less are needed. Layoffs can also occur when a firm owner is thinking too far into the future instead of thinking about what is needed in the moment. For example, many firms experience fast growth. With fast growth comes more clients and therefore more lawyers or support staff. But, firms also experience downturns in work and if this is not documented and that fluctuation is not talked about, it can lead to issues with paying for staff.Listen in to learn more!7:04 Analyzing the factors contributing to the need for layoffs18:42 Discussing the consideration of shifting employees to different roles19:10 Discussion on the considerations and movements within the firmJim's Hack: We aren't creating enough content! Powerful Whispers: Hearing God for the body, soul, and spirit
Don't throw those turkey bones out, use them to make this AMAZING bone broth! It tastes amazing and it's essentially FREE to make, would you be interested? Trade out your expensive grocery bought items and try this unexpected kitchen hack. Highlights: Four key nutritional components of Bone Broth Four potential benefits of consuming Bone Broth Easy steps on how to make Bone Broth at home and save money! RECIPE for Chicken Bone Broth: Ingredients: · Cooked Turkey or Chicken Bones, about 1 gallon bag worth, I use bones from two large packages of chicken · Onion, 1 quart bag full, optional · Mushroom stems, 1 quart bag full, optional · Apple cider vinegar, 1 tbsp to help pull collagen out of bones · Filtered water, enough to fill the crock pot up Directions: Place cooked chicken bones, onion, mushrooms, apple cider vinegar and water into the crock pot. Set Crockpot (slow cooker) on high for 8 -10 hours and let the broth simmer. Stir occasionally. Turn the crockpot off. Remove the chicken bones and vegetables from the crock pot and toss. Place Fine Mesh strainer over a large mixing bowl. Pour the remaining broth over a strainer. This ensures that any smaller particulates are removed from the broth. Place broth in quart size glass jars with a lid. Cool immediately by refrigerating. TIP: You can place the closed jars into ice water to cool the jars quickly or add a few ice cubes to the broth to cool quickly. Use bone broth within 4-7 days, if you aren't going to use bone broth right away then I recommend freezing the bone broth in multiple 2 cup freezer safe containers for up to 4-6 months. Optional: Remove the layer of fat that may accumulate at the top of the glass jar before using. Use a fork to remove the fat from broth. Retail Arbitrage Basics, Buying in stores to sell on Amazon, Amazon Selling 101, Sell on Amazon Retail Arbitrage is a great way to expand your Amazon FBA / eBay / Mercari / Shopify / Facebook marketplace business by procuring inventory and grow your replenishable items at stores near you. Retail Arbitrage is a great way for new sellers to get started since you can source for inventory for the various platforms immediately. Retail Arbitrage Stores to Explore Walmart Target Kohl's Macys JCPenney Walgreens CVS Rite Aid Dick's sporting goods Home Depot Lowes •When I am coaching clients the first thing I tell them after setting up their business is to start with their nearest store and scan every aisle. •The more you scan the more you will learn. THIS IS THE HARD PART! •The top selling categories from my experience are: Grocery, Toys, Health, Beauty, Books/Media and Clothing- in that order •SCAN SCAN SCAN •Basic thresholds to follow when selecting products to sell on Amazon: ROI 30% or greater Rank Read Keepa- we will discuss this later Profit of $5 minimum You should ALWAYS consult Keepa for buying decisions- these are just basic thresholds. NOTE: Your business model may vary. •BSR- Best Seller Rank is shown on items in the Amazon Catalog •Take into consideration if the item has been out of stock, if out of stock the rank will increase. Check Keepa for sales history and rank history •If you would be the only FBA seller then the rank may improve. Also check Keepa for historical data when there were FBA Sellers on the listing. •Seasonal items rank will typically tank after all is sold for the season- learn the history of that ASIN by viewing Keepa or making a buy list from the previous seasonal item's sales. •Once you are acquainted with your brand list start scanning in stores. •Navigate to the clearance in your stores. •Learn the sales cycles of your stores- There are sales cycles for categories within the store like BOGO Vitamins at Walgreens •Go to your local grocery stores and scan items that are in their sales cycles. •When you are scanning do not leave out ANY category. Example: You may not eat gluten free but specialty foods have been a big moneymaker on Amazon since people need that diet but do not have access to it locally. Same goes for any diet food or international foods. •Once you have mastered one store then go to the next closest store near you and do the same. Take note of any clearance days by making relationships with the cashiers and management. •Always as for discounts when buying in bulk- if I plan to spend over $500 at a local store I will create a relationship with management and ask if I could get 15% off if I buy over $500. It sometimes works!!! •Be sure to couple savings. Example: 30% off Kohl's coupon with Kohl's card, $10 Kohl's Cash for every $50 spent. TIP: You can put $1 on your Kohl's card to take advantage of the savings then you can put the remainder balance on a cash back or points back card of your choice. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jessica-hill00/support

Let's talk about design! Design is something that so many law firm owners don't spend enough time thinking about. ➡️ What does your design say about your company? ➡️ Should you create a brand book for your firm? ➡️ What are some design mistakes that you'll need to avoid? ➡️ Does design really matter? ➡️ How often should you freshen up the look of your website? These are some of the questions that our guest — Lauren Felter is answering today. She's a design educator for non designers and a former ladder climber. She spent the first decade of her career overseeing marketing operations and technical systems for a university admissions office, while also teaching design as adjunct faculty. Then in January, 2020, after intense burnout and an identity crisis at the top, she decided to blow it all. And do it her own way. So she turned her highly sought after university design course into one specifically for professionals like lawyers and business owners who aren't graphic designers, but find designing an inevitable part of their regular to-do list. 02:06 Laura's journey … and and getting results 09:19 Design tips that attorneys should know …11:51 Creating a brand book for your company 12:44 Design mistakes to avoid …15:34 Paying five bucks for a designed logo on Fivverr may not be a good idea … here's why 17:52 How do you remove your personality, out of the branding? 20:01 How often should law firm owners be thinking about freshening up their look? Jim's Hack: How often do so many of us feel like we have to justify taking care of ourselves to make sure that people don't think we're too highfalutin? We don't have to justify ourselves to other people. Lauren's Tip: You are allowed to change your mind. If it's not working or serving you right now you are allowed to figure out what's a better fit for you. Pivoting is not failure. Tyson's Tip: Read the book Fascinate by Sally Hogshead to deep dive into creating an irresistible brand.
It's episode 5! Mark Ravenhill has a chat with playwright Nina Segal. Nina is the recipient of the 2022 Playwright's Scheme Award, on attachment with the RSC and her play O, Island!, produced at the RSC in October 2022, was shortlisted for the George Devine Award. From Mark's 101 Playwriting Tips, Nina chose: #99: My definition: go through script and rewrite lines = polish. Ditto but rewrite scenes = a rewrite. Take script apart, question fundamental things about it, rebuild again from the ground up with substantial new material = a new draft. Allow for 3 – 7 drafts. Nina's Tip: You're the only person who can write the play you're going to write.
Marion Wagner is the Business Mindset Coach every entrepreneur needs. In her career, Marion has specialized in helping online entrepreneurs create six-figure game plans without a large following on social media. In the online space, there are a lot of opportunities to improve or create a new business. Marion teaches a combination of psychological and strategic approaches to transform her clients' approach toward online growth. Marion also runs Marion Wagner Coaching and hosts the Get Out of Your Head & Grow Your Online Business Podcast. In this episode, we talk about online business deals, the psychology behind these types of moves, and how and why to seek strategic partnerships and collaborations to grow your audience and income. Know How To Make Online Deals And Partnerships Many think that when we talk about online deals, we are talking about influencer deals—in which a public person negotiates the exposure of a product or service with a brand; this is certainly one type of deal, but it's not the only one. Many types of strategic alliances take place in the online environment, and you can explore all of them with your business. For starters, Marion gives some tips for building partnerships: Figure out what your target audience consumes, put yourself in front of these other companies, and make partnerships. For example: if you are an email marketer, you should not approach another email marketer. Look for social media experts, a funnel expert on Pinterest or LinkedIn, or maybe a media advertising business coach. Strategic alliances with people outside your niche who serve your clients in a different capacity are priceless. After choosing your partner, get to know them and pitch an angle for a partnership. If it's a good fit, they'll jump on that. Always remember to communicate what the benefit to their audience will be from your company. Understand money is not always involved. In Marion's career helping her clients to develop online deals, often there's no money exchanged. For example, to be a part of a summit. It might make sense for you to deliver your content and expertise in exchange for the exposure your company will get and the access to new prospective customers that it provides you. How To Recognize A Good Partnership A good strategic partnership provides three things: 1- You form a strong—and maybe long-lasting—beneficial relationship. Relationships are essential in business. By partnering with someone in the same or a different niche, you are expanding your online possibilities. 2- You speed up your audience's growth. Through a good partnership, you can leverage someone else's already built audience. The partner company has spent years and years building a loyal, engaged audience and getting access to them is precious—you can spend $30,000 on Facebook ads and not get that same ROI. 3- You align and tether to a top performer in your industry. Having that shared credibility and that recommendation is priceless. You can't buy credibility, but you can partner with people who already have it. How To Make Partnerships If Your Company is Small A common question: why would big companies want to do deals with a small company? Marion explains this kind of mindset holds back many small business owners when negotiating. If you are an expert in your field, it does not matter the size of your following if you can add value to someone's audience in a unique way that they are unable to fulfill without you or someone like you. You can bring in a new market, a new geographic target, your contacts, or your specific expertise. Launching A New Product Through Partnerships If you are launching a new service or a new product, it's very intelligent to bring in strategic partnerships to gain access to their audiences. How does one do this? In this type of deal, there is usually a commission or affiliate fee/share that the partner gets paid. Choose the partners wisely and give them an affiliate link with marketing materials targeted to their audience. These partners share through their avenues, maybe launching your product with their email list or on social media platforms. In the social media market, it is common to have a 30% to 50% commission for this alliance. Tip: You have to figure out to whom you're pitching a partnership. If you're pitching to someone who makes seven figures to be an affiliate partner, and you're only offering them 10% or 15%, that may not be worth their time. The Mindset Behind Growth If you are trying to get someone to close a deal with you, they can tell if you believe in what you are offering or if you do not believe in the pricing you are charging people. Nobody is going to pay you more than you think of your work. That's why it's so important to believe in your value. Marion works with her clients to help them develop this mindset and have them develop strong belief until nothing gets them down and they just keep stepping forward. She advises that you want to turn yourself into a magnet where good things are attracted to you. Authenticity Takes You Far Online From her own experience, Marion shares that believing in herself led to success. For one year and a half, she blogged for less than five readers. Marion then realized that with all the content she produced, she was trying to copy all the other bloggers. From there, she drove 100% authentically into herself and started using her distinct voice, not caring about rejection. Within a matter of months, she reached a quarter million page views, just by being in alignment with her real energy. Reaching People As An Exercise If you are an entrepreneur building an income, or if you already have your business and are looking for ways to expand it, Marion advises starting with the impact at the forefront of your mind, and then the income will come as you find your way; however, you can not find your way just by reading it in a book or watching someone else doing it. All successful entrepreneurs did not get to where they are by operating in isolation. The best way to start a relationship with anyone online is to reach out and tell them how great their work is. You want to build true relationships and connections over time. In this week's episode, we're going to talk about how to create a vision board as it is a great tool to think about our goals and push ourselves to dream big!Find the full show notes at Recovering Corpoholics.com/34.A vision board is a collage of images and words that represents your goals and dreams. Vision boards are great as they allow you to take your goals and dreams out of your head and allow you to visually see them. With a vision board, you not only have the goal in mind, but now you have a picture in your head to motivate you in a different light. You may have a goal to lose 5 pounds this month. Great! But with a vision board, you now have a picture of someone in skinny jeans, buttoning their jeans, or just looking great and happy. And you know what they say, a picture is worth 1000 words! In addition to having the image now in your head, a vision board also allows you to see your goals on a consistent basis so you are reminded of what you want to achieve (assuming you put the board in place you can see). You still need to obviously still put in the work and take action to achieve your goals but this is a great first step in doing the preliminary work that is going to set you up for success. Start by thinking about your values. If your goals are not aligned with your values, then achieving those goals won't really resonate with you, keep you going when it gets tough or make you feel accomplished when you achieve them. When starting your vision board, think about the following questions: What's important to me? What do I enjoy? What inspires me?What would I do if there were no limits (i.e. time, money, etc.) or no judgment? What kind of life do I want for myself; my health; my family; my career, etc.?Am I putting restraints on my goals/wants or am I dreaming big? What do I have to do for my life to be what I want it to be?Where do I need to go? Where do I want to go?How do I get there? What am I missing in my life? Why do I want this?Tip: You can write the answers down (I prefer a spreadsheet) so you can really get organized and think about what you want....SEE THE FULL SHOW NOTES HERE!

No matter what you teach - from kindergarten to AP Chemistry - time is something we teachers all seem to have too little of. We're all living minute to minute, just dealing with what's in front of us. So how do you find time for your side hustle when you're already stretched thin? Well… You don't. Time isn't just going to magically appear in your crazy schedule. You have to make the time. If that sounds impossible, stay with me. When I first started blogging in 2012, I was a 24/7 teacher. I ate, slept, and breathed teaching. I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about my students, I spent my evenings planning, and tweaking, and making worksheets… and I was exhausted. How in the world was I going to add the responsibilities that come along with blogging on top of what I was already doing? Sound familiar? Here's the good news. I didn't. What I did was this: Decided that my blog was a priority Set a realistic schedule for when I was going to work on it Planned my time Focused on one thing at a time Stayed ahead of my business tasks (as much as I could) Did something for my business every. single. day. You may be thinking, “Sure that sounds great… but what about all those teaching responsibilities?” Funny thing, that. Once I set 8pm as my business-only time, I still got my lessons done. I still had stuff for my students to work on. I still had grades in the gradebook. I was still prepared for PPTs and 504 meetings… And I stopped waking up at 3am worried about whether or not my directions were clear or wondering if “that kid” was going to derail my plans. (Of course, I still sometimes wake up worried about a student, but that's part of being a caring person.) I was still a good teacher! In fact, I think I got better when I wasn't a 24/7 teacher. So let's dive into the 6 things you can do to make your blog a priority. Make a decision. Is blog a hobby or a business? A hobby is something you do solely for fun, with no expectations on the outcome. You don't have to make time for a hobby. You can do it whenever you want. I never had any luck taking up hobbies when I was a 24/7 teacher. I tried many - painting, guitar, kickboxing - but after I bought all the supplies and had a few days of enthusiastic participation, I'd inevitably allow my 24/7-teacher-brain to take over and tell me I don't have time to paint, or practice, or kick butt. A business is a commitment. To you and your audience. And most importantly, a business makes money. That distinction is what allowed me to make the mental shift needed to step away from being a 24/7 teacher and stop making excuses. If you want it to be a business, and you'd like your business to make money, you need to begin this process with the attitude of a business owner. That attitude adjustment will have a big impact on how you manage your time. Be realistic. I work full time, help my husband with his business, and I'm the kind of mom who likes to spend time with her kid, so the times of day I can write and build my business are limited. Because of these constraints, I may not be able to do as much as others. And that's okay! I've still built a successful business without spending hours a day on it. Look realistically at how much time you have and start small. If you can only spend 30 minutes a day on your blog, that's fine. Doing something well is always better than doing something more. And by being realistic, you're much more likely to stick to the schedule you make. Have a plan. If you don't have a way to organize and plan your time, you will waste a lot of it. You can find planners on Amazon, or make your own. Bullet journals are great for this because you can customize them. I'm also a BIG fan of Trello. The important thing is to have a plan and follow it. This will keep you focused, show you your progress, and help you see the big picture of your business. Tip: You don't need to plan out every second. Something as simple as a weekly list and daily dedicated time to work on it is okay. Don't waste all your time planning or you'll never get to the doing. One thing at a time. Personally, I like to focus on one thing at a time, then move on to the next. Others like to batch their tasks, perhaps writing several blog posts at once, then creating all the graphics, for all the posts, then scheduling everything. Neither is wrong, as long as you're giving the task you're working on your full attention. Turn off the tv, switch off your phone, and go to a place where you won't be distracted. There are lots of cheap or free tools you can use to boost your productivity. Have you ever read an email from someone who was clearly distracted when they wrote it? That's not how you want your business to come across. Whether you're selling products, services, or just the information you provide, your audience and customers deserve posts that are well thought out, carefully composed, and written with their needs in mind. It's hard to do that when you're trying to help your kids with homework, cook dinner, and buy goodies to keep in your class treasure chest while you're trying to write. If your side hustle is a priority you will probably have to make sacrifices to make it work. And that may mean you aren't always up on the latest episode of the latest show. Stay ahead of your tasks. I try to have posts scheduled 2 weeks out. (I do not always succeed.) This way if something comes up – like if you have to spend the whole night cleaning up dog/cat/kid mess – you can handle it without interrupting your blog schedule. I also use a scheduler to get my social media posts up without my constant attention. This is a huge time saver - not to mention, being on Facebook all day while I'm teaching is frowned upon - and it lets me be present without being present. Of course, this means I have to have my social posts prepped and ready to go at least a week ahead so I can schedule them. Staying ahead also means that you can make adjustments on the fly. One time I created a series of posts to share once a month. When the original post became popular and gained unexpected attention, I simply adjusted my schedule to publish the follow up sooner to take advantage of the influx of new readers. Having tasks ahead of time also means that you can take the time to look at the big picture instead of just rushing from one thing to the next, always in crisis mode. Accomplish something for your business every day. Even on my busiest days I check something off my to-do list. It might not be everything I want to do, but I will do something. When you decide to take a day off, it's really easy for a day off to become 2 days, then a week, and before you know it you're behind and have to rush just to get back on track, or you just give up. Running a business is a habit, like exercise. Until it's part of who you are, you have to work to stick with it. No excuses. Having a blog is fun – at least it should be – but it's also work. If you just wait for a free moment to magically open up in your schedule you're never going to get to it. You're not going to find time. You have to make time. You have to decide that your business is worth giving up something else for. Set realistic goals and make a plan. Check off 1 item at a time, but do something every day. No matter what. Shaaz is a Digital Advisor and Director of Digital Transformation for Microsoft and he chats with Elizabeth about what exactly is digital transformation. They go from academic definition, to business buzz words, to practical applications. Shaaz explains why he puts humanity at the centre of digital transformation and why he always wants to focus on "why" (rather than just what fancy new tech can we use).Additional ResourcesElizabeth uses this academic journal article by Gregory Vial (2019) to define digital transformation. Tip: You can get access to some articles for free by looking for things like "Open Access" or "Download for Free" - in this case you find the free version by clicking the "View Open Manuscript" link at the top-centre of the page. When academic journals don't have a free version on their main website sometimes the authors upload a pre-print version somewhere else so you can also try your favourite search engine.Elizabeth mentions the Rogers Diffusion of Innovation Curve. Here is an example of the curve which is found in this blog post (the blog post focuses on IOTA/cryptocurrency, but the theory is applied much more broadly). Here is a YouTube video that explains the theory in the context of marketing.

As a follow up to our recent episode on traditional interviews, we took a deeper dive into virtual interviewing. We cover best practices on phone and video interviews including the preparation beforehand and suggestions how to best execute during the conversation. Pre-Interview Environment and Technology Set-up - Make sure you are in a quiet area. - Camera is working properly - be sure to test sound and location of camera. - Make sure you are in a well-lit room/area. - Do not use virtual backgrounds for interviews. Keep your background as plain as possible with limited distractions. - Test and record yourself so you can see, hear and modify your surroundings During the interview - Make eye contact - Quick tip: Minimize the screen you are appearing on and drag it just under/around your camera. This will direct your eye contact to the camera. - Make sure camera is on and microphone is working - be sure to have good internet connection - If a group interview, address everyone by name. Different than turning to someone in a traditional in-person/room setting. - You can have notes to look at. The interview doesn't have to be robotic. Tip: You can place post-it notes around your screen/monitor as quick reminders, questions or key points to discuss. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Welcome to the DNP Project Podcast where we share tips, inspiration, and more! It's time to get back to school. Our goal is to offer some quick tips for DNP Students. Today's Tip: You need to become a Google GuruWe are all familiar with Google. However, as a DNP student there are features of Google that you may not be familiar with. These features could make your life and DNP work easier. To get started, we recommend that you create a dedicated Google account for your professional work. When this account is set up, it “bundles” several features to one account. Here are the features, we recommend that you explore to become a more efficient DNP student:Gmail: A basic email account. Most of your schools will insist that you only use the school account when communicating about school. However, it is handy to have a professional private account that is not used for anything else, like shopping, or personal business.Google Drive: Very, very important for DNP students. Basically, this is a “cloud” based drive where you can keep papers, presentations, and other documents. When you save something to Google Drive, it can be accessed from anywhere. It eliminates the need to have a “thumb drive” and provides you a back up. You can also use the Microsoft One Drive for the same purpose here. Whichever you choose, remember to ALWAYS back up your papers and files. One other huge benefit of Google Drive, you can set it up so that you can allow other people to access the files. There are different levels of access. You can also work on a document with a group without having to email stuff back and forth, it is updated in real time. If you have a group project to do, this can be life changing! It is the primary reason I personally like to use Google.Google Forms: Google forms has a survey feature. So, if you are doing a needs assessment or some type of data collection that is simple, it will allow you to create a form and then generate a web link that you can easily share with others. There are some limitations and I personally don't recommend this for large, survey-based studies. But, for simple, gathering some feedback information, it is great and definitely worth knowing about.Google & YouTube: Every Google account has a YouTube account that gets automatically associated with it when you activate it. This maybe helpful/important if you are making more professional videos that you don't want intermixed with your personal account.Caution: If you are using Google Drive to create documents/presentations, just know that the format is similar, but not exactly the same. You can store the documents no problem. But, if you open them in a different program, the fonts, margins, and other things like that may shift. Not a big deal, just something to not freak out about.Remember to “Subscribe,” hit “Like,” and “Write a Review” so that we can help others. [2:25] RECAP: Part One: Awareness& Part Two: Action [3:22] Part Three: Awaken [3:55] Habits 101 Habits are small, seemingly insignificant behaviours compounded over time. They're sneaky because more often than not you don't even realize something is a habit until you bring awareness to it! [4:30] Example: 3 women, 3 Different Evening Routines [6:45] Consider YOUR Current Routines Morning, evening, daytime, whatever routines come to mind for youFlash forward 10 years. If you kept doing EXACTLY what you're doing right now for the next 10 years, where do you see yourself at that point? Where do you WANT to be financially in 3, 5, and 10 years? What do you have to start doingtoday to get there? [8:25] That time I found a quarter on the ground Pay attention to the little + powerful signs from the Universe Stay open + trust [10:00] Wealth Habits [10:11] #1. MINDSET Every 3-6 months write out your money story. Forgive any part of your money story that isn't serving you, and let it go! Rewrite your new money story, with your positive wealth thoughts and focus on them. TIP: If you've just started a new money mindset, do this practice monthly, or as often as you feel you need to. Practice this wealth habit more frequently - especially in the beginning - it can be very helpful and transformative in improving your money story. TIP: Have a special money mindset or abundance journal. You can write out your money mindset practice in it, and also journal all the ways that money or abundance has come to you: like when I found a quarter and when I received the emails from my pervious client + employer. [11:05] #2. SAVING You can automate your savings through your bank. A savings account is always a winning money management strategy, and financial experts and advisors will always tell you to be saving. TIP: Know what you're saving for. Having an intention for your money is very important. You want to know what you're saving for, and make sure it's something meaningful to you. TIP: If saving is tough for you, keep coming back to WHY you're saving/what you're saving for. Visit your savings account and watch your money grow! It will help you get more excited about what you're saving for. It's like having a date with your money. [11:45] #3. GRATITUDE Write out 3-5 things you're grateful for each day. Keep this running gratitude list in your abundance journal where you can read it often. Circulating, investing, and generating your money should be celebrated! Thank money for allowing you to afford all the things you have in your life. Look around you, abundance is everywhere! TIP: You don't have to just write about money in your gratitude journal. Write about everything and anything you're grateful for, and be specific. Why are you grateful for this person/place/thing/experience? TIP: Gratitude is a money magnifier!Being grateful attracts more of what you're grateful for; this helps magnify everything you love in your life! Because remember, what you focus on e x p a n d s ! He is the author of four award winning, Amazon best-selling books including: "The Doctor's Guide to Starting your Practice Right", "The Doctor's Guide to Eliminating Debt", "The Doctor's Guide to Smart Career Alternatives and Retirement" and "The Doctor's Guide to Real Estate Investing for Busy Professionals." He spent 23 years as a private practice general surgeon in southern Oregon and has been involved in multiple real estate and business endeavors. He left medicine in 2017 to devote more time to his new business, “The Prescription for Financial Success,” in order to teach doctors how to live a more fulfilling life by becoming debt free and attaining financial independence. He is enjoying his own financial independence by writing, speaking, and coaching doctors into a better financial position while he and his wife, of 30 years, explore the world. He is here telling us all about one of his latest trips to the Camino de Santiago in Spain. This trail is a walking pilgrimage that has its roots in the Middle Ages. It runs from Pamplona to Santiago, Spain and is a 450-mile adventure that Cory did with his wife and their backpacks. Amazing! In today’s episode, we discuss: Why he and his wife decided to take this 38 day walk across Spain. How the movie, "The Way" helped convince them to do the trip. This is a medieval pilgrimage route that was originally done to bury Saint James in a church at the end of the route. Tip: You can download apps on your phone for each pathway on the journey. All of the physical preparation they did ahead of time to prepare for the trip. The hostel type lodging (Albergue) that they stayed at along the way. The trail passport and how you get it stamped along the way. How you get a certificate at the end showing you completed the trek. The different people they met along the way and how it differed depending on what part of the trail you were on. Where they ate along the way and what kinds of foods they enjoyed. Tip: Bring cash for this trip since most places in small towns don’t take credit. How the Spanish siesta culture affected them on the trip. Safety tips on the trail and if they felt safe during the length of the trip. How the trail can be very moving and what it’s like to go to church at the end. Tip: Audio books can be helpful along the way to pass the time. What the bathroom situation was like along the way. Tip: Every town had free water fountains so it was easy to fill your bottle anytime. How they made it for 7 weeks with only two outfits and three pairs of underwear. Why they decided not to use their phones, watch news or go on social media. Minimalism and how the trip has inspired them to not have so many things. How the journey can be made in many different ways based on location and travel preferences. Tip: There are services that will transport your bags for you each day. Why build your personal brand? Your personal brand is a separate asset to the business or investing assets that you may have. So, having a vast personal brand can give you additional income streams. But it's not just increasing our wealth, more importantly, you reach more people. Rob has 16K+ subscribed to his premium content on Facebook alone. Imagine how many had he influenced already. Well, you can also do the same thing and have as great or even greater benefits. All you got to do is to build it. In this episode of The Money Podcast, Rob teaches you how you can brand and market yourself. Among different topics, he shares strategies on how we can make use of the social media platforms, which are mostly free. We've all got personal brand. you just have to find and believe in it, so you can monetise it. KEY TAKEAWAYS What's unique about you? Your uniqueness might manifest from your skills, accreditation, style, manner, interests, or experience. For Rob, he enjoys mixing his artsy side with his business prowess. He's into heavy metal so the guitar riffs in the podcast intro is noticeable. What words and values could you own? What do you stand for and what do you stand against? They don't have to be political; it could be professional and business-related. What is marketable about you? For Rob, he's here to disrupt, not to impress anyone. If it will challenge your mind, principles, and goals for the better, then it's a great content. How do you solve people's problems? Your brand can be built around the specifics of the service you are offering. This might be the most obvious and easiest approach. Be true to yourself. Don't oversell and exaggerate things. You can only manifest what you can only provide to a group of people. And, if some are not satisfied with what they see, move along. Focus on giving value to people who need and appreciate it. Know how to handle criticisms—Approach them professionally, not emotionally. It's a consequence that comes with being a recognised brand, especially in social media. Personal Brand vs Business Brand. Distinguish beforehand what you'll be posting on your personal and business social media account. This ensures not just your security and privacy, but also your loved ones. Tip: You can select who only sees a certain content when you post it. Apply the 70-20-10 rule when managing your social media accounts. The 70% of your content should be posted on your main account, 20% on the next one, and 10% on the rest. You can also put a link of your primary account on the secondary accounts. A friend with a dog problem – biting. Found a training way to completely eliminate the problem. Product. Lead-genAd was very powerful: Biting dog? First thing they do is try to put your pooch down. Get a much happier solution! He was getting a lot of clicks on the ad. But very few conversions. Turned out the reason was his copy struck a very different tone. While the ad was scary and energetic (Tone 4), his copy was depressed and low-energy (Tone 5). Once he matched the copy to his ad, conversions picked right up. It’s all a matter of tone – in your lead generation, in your copy, and in staying consistent throughout your funnel. We’ll talk about that today. And before we do, get a load of this tone: Copy is powerful. You’re responsible for how you use what you hear on this podcast. Most of the time, common sense is all you need. But if you make extreme claims… and/or if you’re writing copy for offers in highly regulated industries like health, finance, and business opportunity… you may want to get a legal review after you write and before you start using your copy. My larger clients do this all the time. The Importance of Tone - a mismatch will break trust (lead gen and sales page) - a match will keep trust (lead gen and sales page) - everything works better when you pick the right tone How to find the right Tone for your copy - who you are to your clients (persona) - how they want to be talked to - within all that, what works best Why your whole funnel should keep the same Tone - builds trust - does not distract readers into thinking they are being sold - helps set you apart from others The Five Tones Each is valid, but some will work a lot better than others. Again, to choose the right one, you need to think about who you are to your clients, how they want to be talked to, and within all that, which one converts the best. Example: Selling Copy Critiques. A lot of people do it. Their approach is often different. I’m one of those people, but I wouldn’t use all five of these tones. However, I can think of at least one person who would use each one. I’ll let you guess as to who they are. But let’s go through them one by one, because you can use at least one of these tones all the way through a funnel in just about any business. 1. Crazy Energy This is high-octane copywriting. It needs to make sense. But you can rave like a maniac with every word. How would we do this selling copy critiques? Lead gen ad: Get your copy hitting grand slam after grand slam! Headline: Your copy’s like a timid little kitten. Let’s turn it into a ROARING LION! Tip: Keep the energy high and mounting all the way through. And be the kind of person who delivers mile-a-minute, testosterone-drenched critiques. 2. Steady Driving This is steady-as-she goes copywriting. It does have a forward momentum, but it’s calm, friendly, and level-headed. What would it look like with an ad and in a headline to sell a copy critique? Lead gen ad: Step by step to greater results with your copy Headline: Our closely-guarded system for cranking up the response in your copy Tip: You need to have a very systematic, somewhat rational work style and way of interacting with others for this to fully work. 3. Up Close and Personal I would say this is more me than any of the other four. It’s very customized. A combination of systematic and intuitive. Very focused on results but not all that locked-in on how to get them. To use this approach, you need to think about how to describe what’s not a predictable experience. Here’s how I would do it: Lead gen ad: Only ONE approach will make your copy convert better. Let me show you what it is. Headline: You’re not a cookie, right? So why use a cookie-cutter approach with your copy, when a customized approach will work so much better? Tip: You really need to know yourself, and listen closely to what your customers/clients say about you, to use this approach effectively. I’ve collected enough testimonials from already successful clients who say “I don’t know how he does that” to realize that promoting my custom approach will appeal to the right prospect. 4. Serious Danger If you are harsh, paranoid or simply very critical, this is a good approach. It’s completely valid and it works with a sizeable section of the market. The point here is to NOT pull your punches. You’ll really piss some people off, but you’ll endear others to you. You only care about the ones who like your kind of approach. Lead-gen ad: Yes, your copy really does suck. DON’T let it tank your business. Headline: If you’re copy’s not working, you might as well throw in the towel now. But if you can handle the truth about what you need to do, we need to talk. 5. Sad and Gentle This can work with a sensitive subject, especially around health and death. But it’s very hard to pull off effectively. I’m going to give it my best shot in showing you how you would use this to market copywriting critiques. Lead-gen ad: You know how bad you feel when copy doesn’t work? Let’s change that. Headline: I remember the dark days of never being able to make my copy work. Fortunately I discovered something that changed all that, and I’d like to share it with you. Recap: Why tone is important, and consistency is just as important 1. People are attracted to different styles. Make yours very clear, right from the get-go. 2. Consistency of tone builds trust. Inconsistency of tone reduces trust. Go for building trust. 3. It’s easier to write more effectively in a tone that matches how you actually interact with people in the marketplace.Download.

Tricia Brouk is a performance expert, TEDx organizer, writer, director, choreographer, podcast host, and producer of theatre, TV and film. She hosts The Big Talk, a podcast series on iTunes and currently directs and dramaturges Big Talks and Keynotes. She is the current organizer of TEDxLincolnSquare – Risk Takers and Change Makers. She has produced, directed or choreographed several award-winning theatre and TV/Film productions. Through her company, The Big Talk, she helps people identify, craft and deliver a life-changing Big Talk or Keynote. Period in full time business and business background She has owned a company for over 26 years. She moved to New York City from Missouri to pursue a dance career and had no interest in being a starving artist. She started Brouk Moves, an elite in-home personal training company where she hired people to work for her so that she could still make money even when she was on the road. The company has been going strong, has 15 trainers, 25 clients and recently started a personal chef service. The business has enabled her to pursue a creative life outside of business and also given her the opportunity to create a new business, The Big Talk. Brouk Moves has been her primary income for the last 26 years and has enabled her to pay all her bills, avoid the life of a starving artist and produce theatre. Her team works on the business full time so she can have time to pursue other things. Starving artists She says she sees this a lot in the industry and she has observed that artists feel unworthy of making money, because when they make money they then feel that they are selling out, and that they are not truly artists. She says artists deserve to be paid for what they are worth, to have money and create art simultaneously. Tip: You are not giving up your artist soul by taking a big fat pay check First gig In her first big European tour, she got a weekly pay check to do what she loves including touring, dancing, and being a full time artist. That was while Brouk Moves was still bringing in money because her team was doing all the work. That when she knew she could make a living as an artist in the long term while also making a living as a business woman. Tip: Once you pursue and achieve what your goal is, do not let go of that business! Do not think that you have to choose. You can maintain them both equally Getting into entrepreneurship She decided early on that she would live the way she wanted without being poor or waiting for gigs to find her. She is proactive, mindful and kind in the way she runs her business. Her trainers take time off whenever they want and the rest sub for them. Tip 1: Stop waiting for that big artist contract, start creating your art, start creating your business, because if you wait for someone else to do it for you, you will spend your entire life waiting. Tip 2: Get busy, create art no matter where it is, no matter what it is. Keep your artist muscle flexing and find a way to make money on your own terms The first months in the fitness business She started by working very hard and personally training all the clients she had. She used to wake up at 4.30am and would do the client training while also dancing and performing. Once she realised that she could hire a team to take on some of the work, she created a system where she could always be involved but didn't need to be there. That enabled her to reduce her commutes, and her time was spent doing other things. When she hired other people, she had to trust them, let go, and make sure that she put systems in place to ensure the business would run efficiently. Tip 1: If you are starting up, you have to dig in, roll up your sleeves and do the work Tip 2: When starting out, you have to create a solid foundation first, then you can back off and do the other things that you want to do Choosing personal training She says personal training was very organically...

Michael Jackness is the co-founder of colorit.com, creators of top-quality coloring books for adults. He is also the CEO of terrain.com which focuses on domain investing, ecommerce, SEO, PPC, and affiliate marketing. He is also the co-host of a popular podcast called Ecomcrew Podcast. Michael has been involved in the online marketing world for over 10 years. Since running one of the largest poker affiliate networks in the world with over 60 employees, he now runs a network of ecommerce websites generating over $7 Million in revenue annually. Period in full-time business He started in business for himself when he was 18. He was graduating high school and he didn't have much to look forward to because he wasn't going to go to college due to his poor grades and lack of attention in school. So he got a box of business cards and a pager then started computer consulting because he was very good with computers. He would go into people's homes and help them with their computer needs for $20 an hour. That was back in 1998 Core revenue streams He says that over the last 4 years, they have been immensely focused on e-commerce. In 2017, their projected revenue is $7 Million and in 2018 he projects $15 Million in revenue. They have been growing at 200% to 300% per year and the only thing that slows their growth is lack of enough cash. They currently have 4 brands. The first one was http://www.treadmill.com/ (www.treadmill.com). He has been investing in domains for a long time and says they are like real estate. He ended up starting an e-commerce business with http://www.treadmill.com/ (www.treadmill.com) and then sold it at the beginning of 2015 after which he purchased another site called http://www.icewraps.com/ (www.icewraps.com) which offers hot/cold packs for different parts of the body. From there, he developed http://www.colorit.com/ (www.colorit.com) which offers a brand of colouring books geared towards adults. They also have http://www.tactical.com/ (www.tactical.com) which offers information on gear, camping, hiking, hunting, DIY, food, and more. They have a new brand called “Wild Baby” which they recently launched exclusively on Amazon and are currently developing its website. They also have the https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-ecom-crew-podcast/id1056042180?mt=2 (Ecom Crew) which consists of a blog and podcast about e-commerce. His background before e-commerce was affiliate marketing and from his e-commerce experience he learnt that he would need to talk about e-commerce through developing different valuable content. They have been looking into monetizing the blog and podcast. Tip: There are a lot of ups and downs in business, everything you start isn't going to be successful but it's all about identifying those that can become successful Domain investing Michael does speaking engagements on e-commerce and business in general. He says that domain investing comes down to being at the right place, at the right time, and knowing that domain names are illiquid assets and that they cannot be sold on a moment's notice. He never really chooses to pick a particular domain name because he mostly gets opportunities to buy them from different people. He may sometimes resell the domain names or choose to develop them like he did with http://www.treadmill.com/ (www.treadmill.com) and http://www.tactical.com/ (www.tactical.com). Tip: You have to be prepared for the fact there is only a couple of people in the world that can purchase these mid-6-figure or high-5-figure domain names Affiliate marketing He got into online poker affiliate marketing in 2004 and that's where he made a lot of his money. That was during the growth of online poker and being an early adopter of that, he had affiliate sites that were not just about content because he did several unique affiliate marketing-based things. When he got out of that in early 2011, he started doing the keyword domain investing with his...

Michelle Dale is the founder of Virtual Miss Friday, an online business consultancy and academy with built-in virtual assistant services. She is also the creator of Insourcing, a service that helps 6 to 7 figure entrepreneurs to organize, monetize and cultivate their online businesses. Through the academy, she offers a range of training programmes and courses for virtual assistants and digital nomads. Michelle built her business while travelling through 6 countries and has expanded Virtual Miss Friday into multi-6 figure, multi-VA team supporting a global client base. Travelling the world Michelle has been on the road travelling globally since 2005. In 2005, Facebook and social media were not invented and there were very few people offering services online. She left the UK to travel the world and she thought to herself that there must be something she could do online to earn a living in such a way that she could keep travelling. Eventually, she discovered that she could provide VA services online which is what she did. Current base She is currently based in Greece, on the island of Crete, where she spends most of her time during the summer months after which she travels in the winter. She goes back to England on Christmas and then takes her kids off so they can travel for a few months after which they return during the summer. Corporate role She was in banking for a long time. She left school at 16, so she did any work she could do to make ends meet. At age 17, she landed a job in a bank and by the time she was leaving the UK at age 23, she was working as a para-planner and office manager in a mortgage and financial administration firm. Core revenue streams She makes money from services she provides to clients including consulting services, VA services, and online-oriented training courses. She also sells products, training programs and does a lot of coaching. She is currently trying to focus more on her programs and courses. She has a membership site as well, which generates income for her through membership fees. This is her primary income source. Starting out in business When she started out, her house in the UK was broken into and the thieves took everything except her passport. Michelle took that as a sign and so she decided to start travelling. She immediately quit her job, sold her house, booked a one way ticket and left. She then did some research online, came across virtual systems and started the business. She also contacted her friends to get people and resources that would enable her to test the services before she started getting paying clients. She then started taking paying clients for services like customer support, administrative support, and personal assistance. From there, she later branched out into website design, and when social media was created, she started offering social media marketing. Michelle didn't have any skills in website design but she self-taught herself HTML code and Dreamweaver so she could build her own site and it worked out so well that people started asking her to do websites for them. Identifying what to do She had a criterion of things that she absolutely had to have fit into her business and one was that it had to be a business she could do on the internet so she could work while travelling. She also wanted a business that wouldn't require her to commit to specific times. The criteria included many other things which she wanted in a business. She then researched online about working online and she came across many different online businesses including ecommerce. She had tried selling things on eBay but she wanted to use her skills in what she was doing, and enjoy it. That's how she settled on administrative and customer support, and personal assistance services. Knowing it would work She didn't know for sure but she had no other option but to make it work because it was all she had. Tip: You have to have enough pain or passion

Todd Tresidder is a successful entrepreneur who has built many businesses and actually retired at age 35 from his position as a hedge fund investment manager responsible for over $20 Million dollars. He is now a financial coach and educator at financialmentor.com where he offers coaching, a blog and ebooks on how to build wealth and invest smarter. He is the author of five financial planning books including “How Much Money Do I Need To Retire?,” “Don't Hire A Financial Coach,” and “Variable Annuity Pros and Cons.” Period in full-time business He says he has been in business his whole life. He only worked as an employee for 6 months and then got fired. When in college, he was the associate students' business manager at the University of California which involved running the student run businesses on campus. He had been an entrepreneur since childhood starting out with paper routes and working his way up. He also had a boating business, taught sailing and had a pool supply company when in college. He says he is unemployable. He worked for HP straight out of college but was fired after 6 months. He had made them millions by cleaning up their service contracts but got fired because his great performance made the boss look bad. Core revenue streams Currently, his revenues come from http://www.financialmentor.com/ (www.financialmentor.com). He sold the coaching business about 3 years ago. The coaching generated good revenue but he never wanted to become a thousand dollar an hour coach which is how people make money in coaching. He knows he could have done it but he didn't enjoy it anymore after a while because it started becoming like a job. He is in the process of converting the business into the seven steps to seven figures courses. He began the coaching business because he used to ask himself how he could help ordinary people achieve extraordinary financial results. From coaching people, he learnt that acquiring wealth involves 7 processes that people go through and he finally got it down to a system that worked for clients. He then had to figure out how to formalize it into a structure that worked for everybody regardless of their class. It took some time for him to figure it out but he eventually broke it down into a 7 step process and he is now turning all that into product form so that he can be able to scale it in the long term. Retiring at 35 He says it was planned. He worked his way through college and came out with debt. He used to work all summer while other students went on holiday. He didn't want to struggle in life and was determined to have financial independence so he figured out how to do it and mapped a path with the hedge fund business being a big part of it. He figured that since he had to learn how to compound wealth then he might as well get paid to learn how to do it. Hedge funds were the only way for him to achieve that so he went to work for a hedge fund where he was responsible for developing statistical and mathematical trading systems. Tip: You have to have a plan that‘s built around your interests, skills, resources and abilities because otherwise it won't work: This is step 3 of the seven steps to seven figures A hedge fund Todd says that the difference of a hedge fund from a mutual fund is that it's skill based (the return is a function of skill) but with a mutual fund, the return is the function of what the market gives. If the market is up, most mutual funds are up and vice versa. A hedge fund has skill based strategies and therefore they can make money under any market condition. The 12 years to success At the hedge fund, Todd started working in the marketing department and all he had to do was attract company presidents and vice presidents into what they called medium size return plans. They had a strategy for soliciting them and started building the business. One day as he was looking at the accounting, he realised that it was wrong and...
Creating A Babysitting App Audrey remembers the specific moment she realized she needed creative childcare solutions. She was talking with her soon-to-be partner Amy in their church lobby, lamenting their childcare problems: the expense of a babysitter, the struggle of finding a good babysitter, the guilt of asking family for favors again... you get the idea. Thinking outside the box, they "decided to change (their) own destiny and formed a local babysitting co-op.” After lots of quick wins and great successes, these ladies realized they had stumbled upon a parenting hack that could help lots of families. They eventually changed their mission from serving their local group of about 16 moms to helping moms across the country. On a personal note, my mother was part of a babysitting co-op when I was little. She always talked about how amazing it was and how lucky they were. When Chris and I lived in South Carolina, I nearly got a co-op together -- but I found the logistics difficult and it never got off the ground. I absolutely love the idea of having an app do all of the work of a co-op for me. The app deals with the administrative headaches and even the potential social awkwardness of ‘who’s in and who’s out’ of my co-op. How Komae Works Each individual parent gets to decide who to trust as babysitters among their friends, and those friends get to decide, etc. A request for a "sit" will only be seen by hand-selected, pre-approved people. Using the App It's a straightforward process: -Download the app in iTunes or Android Store. -Create a profile, and tell Komae about you and your family. Do your kids have allergies? When is nap time? Are they bottle fed? Do they still wear diapers? -Once you’re set up, just post a request including the date and time you need a babysitter. -Your friends will see, “Audrey has a need from 8 to 9 on Wednesday, are you available?” And a friend can say if they’re available or not. -Connect with friends in your village by either searching a name or email if they’re already a Komae user or link to your Facebook account and invite friends from there. Behind the Name Komae means village in Greek. When naming their app, Audrey and Amy borrowed from the saying, "It takes a village to raise a child." And like a village, this app functions around reciprocity; you give to and receive from those around you. They were so excited when, as the app gained popularity, users requested the ability to post when they were available to give care, not just when they needed a sitter. Isn’t that great!? Earning Babysitting Points Komae has a babysitting point system where 1 hour of babysitting equates to 1 point. When users put in the details of their sit, Komae calculates how much the sit is worth. In this way, the app removes that social friction of figuring out which kids require more effort, and how many points to assign per sit. Earning and using credits is a simple banking system: You earn points by watching your friends' kids, and you spend points when your friends watch your kids. The app makes it fair for everyone, and it's so much easier than having those awkward conversations. (And I have to say at this point, I was SO excited to get started with Komae - I couldn’t wait until we were done interviewing to download the app!) Developing an App The thought of actually developing an app sounds insanely difficult and stressful! I absolutely needed to hear from Amy and Audrey about what their process was to get this app up and running. When they launched the Komae mobile friendly web app in May of 2016, they had already been helping moms with the babysitting struggle for 2 years. Of course, the pair didn’t start working 40 hours a week until closer to launch time. In fact, they used their babysitting co-op to gain a couple of afternoons a week to work, plus they worked after bedtime. As of this air date, the My Komae app is available in iTunes and Google Play Store. It's not a quick process, though it's definitely worthwhile. Tip: "You don't need to be at your end goal in 1 month, 2 months, 12 months. It might take a couple years...Just focus on the next dot." Finding an App Developer How do you know if your developer will be the right fit or that they have the right skills? Both Amy and Audrey had husbands that worked in tech, and while they weren’t developers, they had the network and knowledge to find the right people. They used Upwork to find freelance developers. (With Upwork, you post a specific job and different people apply, then you get to choose the freelancers you want.) Alternatively, there are app development agencies. This option is very expensive but very effective. To raise funds to make this all happen, 6 months into their development process, the Komae team ran a Kickstarter and used that money to begin developing their Minimum Viable Product. (Minimum viable product means the simplest, slimmest version of your idea. The purpose is to gauge interest and success.) They did fully fund their Kickstarter - and also pursued a unique funding option I had never heard of, which I had to ask about! Funding with Pitch Competitions and Kickstarter At first, the pair set out to fund this project via Kickstarter. Their goal was $20,000. The Kickstarter was a bit of a nail-biter, as they fully funded (just over $20K) on Day 34 of a 35-day campaign! 2 days after their Kickstarter ended, they went to a pitch competition. A pitch competition is basically like Shark Tank in real life; it’s an opportunity to share your idea and be considered for financing. In fact, Amy and Audrey said they binge-watched Shark Tank episodes to prepare for their pitches! In just 2 minutes they pitched their Komae app and earned $10,000 more dollars (on top of their Kickstarter funds) to pursue development. Over the past 2 years, they’ve won 7 competitions that resulted in grants or investments for Komae. And with such a fabulous first success with pitch competitions, it’s easy to see why they kept going back for more! Pitch competitions are a savvy way to fund a project that needs a higher investment, or that you don’t have the skills to develop. If you want to find a local pitch competition, just Google search ‘pitch competition [your city name]’. One of the best pitch competitions they entered was from Jen and Jenny of the company Rent the Runway, whose foundation is called Project Entrepreneur. It’s an intensive weekend with training from other female business founders. 800 people started the application process, and only 12 were picked to pitch on stage. Not only were Amy and Audrey chosen to pitch, they were chosen as one of the 3 winners! They earned another $10,000 for their business, as well as 5 weeks of working in the Rent the Runway Manhattan office. It was an incredible experience, to say the least! They were able to network and learn from other companies. Even if a pitch competition doesn’t end in financing, it might have come with a consultation or networking opportunity that makes a big difference for a new business. Moms Spending 5 Weeks In Manhattan!? Of course, the Komae ladies were so excited to have won this mega prize, but then the reality set in: “Oh my gosh, what are we going to tell our husbands!?” Their husbands stepped up to the challenge. These sweet hubbies hunkered down and took care of the kids, while Amy and Audrey drove to and from New York every weekend (an 8-hour drive) to see their families. It was a big sacrifice for big gains. High five, husbands, for handling the kids for 5 weeks! I would have had no idea that all these resources were available for start-up business owners. But actually there’s a big focus on female entrepreneurs, and "it’s a sexy time to be a female entrepreneur, especially in the Midwest.” The girls have really enjoyed the community of support they’ve gained from their pitch competitions. App Development Difficulties Komae’s “biggest hurdle by far was having a vision of a deadline, and then the reality of when things came to fruition.” (And I can totally relate! Our podcast break was way longer than I expected.) Komae’s 4-week timeline turned into 20 weeks, especially with the glitches technology can often experience. But the best thing an entrepreneur can do is to learn that "it’s okay to take longer than planned, and to roll with the punches.” Marketing An App Within a week of becoming available in the iTunes store in fall of 2016, Komae already had 1,000 users. I had to know how they spread the word and marketed their product! At first, Komae was a mobile friendly web app, which was their minimum viable product. Komae spread organically at first through word of mouth, with moms inviting their mom friends using the irresistible hook of free babysitting. Plus, they were interviewed on the local news and were featured in a few articles that have also been a bit of a PR boost. But what they’re super excited about is putting marketing dollars behind their initiatives. Komae is focusing on creating social media campaigns, primarily, since moms hang out on social media. It’s the perfect place to market an app aimed at moms. Using a Launch Party Model They’ll do traditional marketing, but they know word of mouth won’t go away because, in order to benefit, moms need their friends to sign up too! Since moms add their friends to the app, the viral spread won’t go away. It’s like built-in marketing for the app; each new user potentially brings in five or ten more. They’ve got a great idea of moms throwing launch parties within their own local communities of moms. The Komae team knows they could spend time and money getting one person on board at a time, or they can spend money on something like the launch party model to get 20 new users at once. And the launch party model doesn’t estrange those who may not want to share babysitting with everyone at the party. Because of the way the app works, each user gets to choose who is in their village, their group of babysitters. The purpose of the launch party is simply to get everyone to download the app and get excited. Then they can connect with the people they are comfortable with at the party, but even more, they'll go home and invite other friends. Solving Your Own Problem Not only were Audrey and Amy solving the problem other moms had, they were trying to solve their own problem of needing childcare to run their side businesses. Audrey remembers that she hated spending money on a sitter for a business meeting that she wasn’t sure would end up making her money. It felt silly to spend that cash she wouldn’t necessarily get back! And then sometimes she would get a spur of the moment business meeting request, but had to scramble like a crazy woman behind the scenes to line up childcare for the meeting, before she could even give an answer. Once she had the babysitting co-op, she could immediately say, “Yes! I can meet you tomorrow at 2,” and find childcare through the co-op. Amy’s side business was a boutique bakery. Can’t you just imagine the kids trying to lick the icing off the spoon while Amy filled orders? It’s healthy for mom to have that time to work -- and for kids to have time to play with their friends -- and then be fully engaged with the kids when they are all home. And, it’s really helpful for someone who is the "sometimes working mom," or the mom with unpredictable babysitting needs. And with Komae, your kids basically get an automatic playdate, rather than a babysitter coming to your house to entertain your children. The kids are truly getting active, social playtime, having a blast with friends. They don't even know they're being babysat--you're dropping them off to play! Komae is a great solution all around. When it comes to the actual sitters, because you hand-select your village, you’re choosing the role models for your kids. You’re building a trusted network of mentors for your children to look up to. Social media usually brings people further apart, but with Komae it brings people together. Now when you stop at your friend's house, they know what you're doing and they care about your life, and they’ve built a bond with your children. Beth Anne’s Mom Confession I spill a hilarious Mom confession in this episode. You’ll have to listen to catch it! But let’s just say it has to do with babysitters and a secret we’ve been keeping from Holden! For the Mom who isn’t a Super-Fan of Babysitting Other People’s Kids One objection Komae gets a lot is, "I don’t have time to watch other people's kids!" or even, "I don’t WANT to watch other people’s kids!" And really, if that's you, you are not alone! Komae sits are not like babysitting, though. It’s more like you’re making your home a fun and safe place for your children’s friends to play. You can even get laundry and dishes done while the kiddos enjoy the playdate, plus earn points to get free time later! Amy’s Adorable Mom Moment Amy lives in Ohio and in the middle of winter they can get days and days and days of snow. Once dHer son was desperate to play outside, but because of all the snow days, she was behind on her work and said no. Let’s just say it was a day when Amy wasn’t getting along with her toddler! Her little guy got so frustrated that he was insisting on going outside while standing in the foyer naked, in only his snowboots! Amy posted a request on Komae, and soon was able to take her son to a friend’s house. Turns out, the friend was already planning to play in the snow! Amy got her work done, and when she reunited with her son everyone was much happier and had a great afternoon together. I absolutely loved learning from these two ladies. Their story is totally inspiring for any business mom. I think this product is an absolute must for all busy moms! And from their story, you should be encouraged to go out and take action on the brilliant business idea that you have. In this episode, Jim, Tyson and Randall Ryder will try to identify bad clients, and explain why it’s a good idea not working with them. As many of solo practicing lawyers, Randall has the “good” struggle of not having enough time to do everything. He’s in a point in which he may need to add an associate or an assistant. He’s having trouble letting things go that he SHOULD let go. Every client is not created equally and there are some clients who really aren’t worth 5 times what your normal fee would be. You can’t bill for waking up on the middle of the night. You can't bill for sitting in front of your computer willing to smash your keyboard because someone isn't listening to you. They’re just not worth it. So, how do you identify those clients? With experience. When somebody calls you and something just doesn’t feels right about what they said, or something about how they’re talking to you just doesn’t feel right, something doesn’t line up; just go with your gut. “I have a great case!”... No you don’t! Bad clients can crowd out good clients, they leave you without energy to deal with new clients or with actual good clients. Re-allocate your resources from all the bad places to good places. Randall’s Tip: You need to stand a lot of time on https://lawyerist.com/ reading a lot of articles. Free information for people who want to go solo. Hacking’s Hack: Google Sites. It allows you to build internal or external facing websites, and you can use it as an intranet. Very easy to use! Tyson’s Tip: A book; “What to Do When it's Your Turn (and it's Always Your Turn)” by Seth Godin. The Domino Project; 1st edition (December 1, 2014). It’s inspirational and motivational. All About Webinars If you haven't run a webinar yet, then this podcast is for you. Have you seen the emergence of video on the web? You have? Well, it's time to get involved. Video is becoming a dominant medium. Twitter introduced Periscope. Facebook has Facebook Live. There's YouTube too. Video is important to you if you are doing business online. It is looking like Facebook Live will present options for you in the same way as Webinars do. Some things make webinars different. When you put a webinar together the end-to-end process is an entire sales funnel. An advert that directs people to a sign up page > capturing a name and email address along with a registration for a webinar at a particular time > sending a series of reminder emails to trail the main event > in the webinar, you get to present live to camera, or play pre-recorded video or screen-shot mode (like PowerPoint) > webinar provides a chat box for feedback > and when the ‘teaching' part of the webinar moves into the ‘sales' part of the webinar, you can display buttons for people to click that will transit to a sales page > plus the webinar can be recorded to enable you to do things with the recording. Advert – the use of headlines to grab people's attention. Appeal to an audience. The more your advert resonates with people with the specific issues your webinar addresses the more chance you have to make a sale. The webinar can be sold on limited access. You might not get in. So act now and secure your seat. Attend at a time which is good for you. You don't have to be in front of the screen either. Talk to slides. Kevin bought a white board to do his first Periscope presentation. But there is more to doing a few slides. You have to be prepared. There are a number of moving parts. The Apple alternative is Keynote. How long should the webinar be? An hour to 90 minutes. So about a PowerPoint of 30 slides. You can of course keep attention by adding images and one point per slide. Don't put your speaking notes as points on your slides. The landing page is designed to capture your email and name and how to join the webinar. The reminder emails are important to get you to attend. So many people fall off. Kevin cloned Amy Porterfield's emails to attend her webinar course. Shamelessly copy! You will get early drop offs as some people realise the content is not right for them. What about webinar software? The software: There are two options that lead the market: WEBINAR JAM and EASY WEBINAR. Both tools have good reviews and cover everything. Kevin has used WEBINAR JAM. The landing page. Typically, you might do several webinars in a day. Recognising an international audience. The landing page will help you choose the time of webinar you want. The emails you send to remind people has to be co-ordinated with the webinar they chose to attend. Doing this with AWeber or Mailchimp is really difficult. TIP: Do a practice run. TIP: You can create an automated presentation and live answer chat box questions. This allows you to ‘perfect' your presentation. You can manage the webinar rather than focus on doing the webinar. TIP: Can you get a colleague to join you to handle the chat box. For a webinar to be worthwhile, run it for at least 20 minutes. Communicate relevant content to the audience that you want. The better your message to market match is, the greater the sale chance? You can do all this without Webinar Jam, but you have to manage a lot of moving parts. So here's the LINK! https://www.webinarjam.com Maybe authenticity comes from a mix and live elements. Feedback in the chat box allows you to re-present parts of what you are saying again. WebinarJam allows more than one presenter too. Now that means Kevin will probably rope me into a future webinar!! Ultimately, you probably want a one-to-one conversation. This is a good way to close more sales. The Numbers behind a webinar Kevin answers a few questions:
GRADE YOUR LIFE HERE! I carry the lessons that my Granny taught me every day. I use them to dig me out of death traps set for me by others and myself. There are moments when her voice is faint and I need to STOP, tune in and catch my breath. You are invited to take 60 minutes to catch your breath to identify if we’ve been fools or if we’ve taken every opposition and turned them into jewels? I was prompted me to stop and gather all of the nuggets I’ve learned over the past year. I learned a few things about myself, some that I loved and some I hated. I realized that I was doing a lot but not really getting a lot done. I wasn’t producing the best results and for me results mean a lot of things (MONEY-FUN-SEX-ROCKnSOUL) As I recalibrated myself, I learned that I didn’t need to try so hard to be the business, the brand; coach/speaker/teacher. I AM spiritually all of those things and that trying to be them meant I didn’t actually believe that. TIP:You don’t have to try to be anything that GOD has called you to be. Just show up and put on your anointing. It’s not one size fits all. It was made just for you! When I surrendered, I got RESULTS: BREAKTHROUGH-VISION-CONNECTION-ELEVATION Ask yourself: What has life really taught me?What lessons have I really learned? How have I applied those learned lessons?Am I living a remedial life, constantly repeating the same destructive patterns?
