What if your pain has a deeper message – and you could learn how to listen, respond, and even heal? Pain isn't just physical. It's emotional, mental, and often tied to the deeper stories we carry in our bodies. But those stories aren't fixed, and we have the power to transform them. Vinny Crispino, founder of Pain Academy and expert in pain science, knows this firsthand. After a life-changing injury, he moved from resisting his body's signals to understanding and working with his nervous system. Now, he helps others improve their relationship with pain through compassion, movement, mindset, and nourishing choices – including food. In this episode, you'll learn: Why pain can lead to self-sabotage and disconnection How mindset shapes our experience of pain, and why it's not your fault but your responsibility What turns an acute injury into chronic pain (and how to stop that cycle) Simple, supportive steps to help your body begin healing The connection between food and pain and how certain choices can soothe rather than inflame How to build a loving, bidirectional relationship with your body You'll feel inspired to challenge your story about chronic pain, start using anti-inflammatory foods to nourish your body, and find healing through compassion and self-love. In this episode, you'll learn: What an “SOS Routine” is and how to make one 4 steps you can take RIGHT NOW to mitigate your pain How to recognize and stop the cycle of self-sabotage The impact pain has on your identity and how to separate the two Vinny Crispino is back! Last week we laid the groundwork, and this week we go a level deeper and dig into the steps we can take to relieve pain NOW and change the stories we tell ourselves about our relationships with chronic pain. If you missed part one, be sure to check it out here. Vinny was a decorated D1 collegiate swimmer at the University of Wyoming, with his eyes set on the big leagues, but a surfing accident took him from elite athlete to disabled in a matter of seconds. After years of learning about the body and searching for relief, Vinny is now pain-free, competing in ultramarathons, and helping others find healing through Pain Academy. In today's episode, Mathew, Chris, and Vinny discuss four steps you can take today to start finding relief from chronic pain. They also talk about how to recognize and avoid self-sabotage, the complicated realities of using medications to mask pain, and the parallels between a weight loss transformation journey and a pain relief transformation journey. Our modern mentality skews towards quick fixes, instant gratification, and masking pain. However, the way medications impact our healing is complicated and may be causing us to unknowingly reinjure ourselves. Pain itself is not the problem; it's the messenger, and if we can turn off the alarm bells and listen, there's actually something very useful it will tell us. The physical pain is real, but the emotional pain is making it worse. We may even be self-sabotaging because pain can be a useful excuse as to why we limit ourselves or haven't achieved our goals. Chronic pain can become part of our identity if you let it, and without the correct mindset, no amount of therapy will help you. However, by creating a SOS routine to calm your nervous system, distancing yourself from the pain, and regulating your emotions, you can begin to rewrite your story and edit the pain out. Vinny was a decorated D1 collegiate swimmer at the University of Wyoming, with his eyes set on the big leagues. Eventually, he moved out to California, where a surfing accident changed his life forever. Vinny went from an elite athlete to being disabled in a matter of seconds. What followed was almost four years of frantically searching for answers everywhere he could. After finding no relief, he realized only he would be able to help himself. At 23, Vinny went back to school to learn the basics and try to heal his body. Today, he is pain-free, competing in ultramarathons, and helping others find healing through Pain Academy. In today's episode, Mathew, Chris, and Vinny discuss their experiences with chronic pain, the solutions they have tried, the inevitable addiction issues, and what finally worked. Understanding the physiology of pain is one part of the equation, but Vinny was only able to find relief when he began to understand the emotional side of pain. He tells us he thinks about treating back pain like anxiety or depression by regulating our internal worlds with thoughts and words. Like many of us, Vinny has had to overcome years of suppressing his emotions and has developed practical tools over the years to help himself and others recover. Today we have a conversation with Vinny Crispino, Founder of Pain Academy. Pain Academy is a Movement Therapy business with a mission to improve posture and heal pain through simple movements that anyone can do. Their approach is not a quick-fix, but a long-term solution that traces the root cause of pain, misalignment and overall limitation in the body. Their best-selling program, The Movement Program, teaches members simple + effective corrective exercises that adapt to their individual needs, and to date has helped over 5,000 members become healthier. Pain Academy was born from Vinny's own personal pain journey – after he broke his back in his 20's. Now, 10 years later, he's solved his problems for good, and has devoted himself to teaching others to do the same.
