In this episode, I share some stats about the sheer volume of daily thoughts—between 60,000 and 80,000, with a staggering 80-90% being repetitive and predominantly negative. This repetition can create thick neural pathways in our brains, reinforcing doubts, fears and limiting beliefs. I use a vivid analogy comparing our thoughts to a hairdryer cord, illustrating how negative thoughts can become strong and durable while positive thoughts often remain fragile and underdeveloped. Throughout the episode, I encourage listeners to recognize the power of their language and internal dialogue. I challenge them to identify the negative beliefs they may be reinforcing and to consciously work on building new, empowering thoughts. I emphasize that change is possible and that we can create new neural pathways through repetition and intention. The metaphor of a string vs a hairdryer cord landed visually, and I knew I wanted to share it! In this episode of Spinal Cast, we dive into the research of Dr. Marina Martinez, Associate Professor at the Département de Neurosciences at Université de Montréal. Dr. Martinez shares her journey into neuroscience and how her passion led her to focus on spinal cord injury research. With an in-depth understanding of the brain's remarkable ability to adapt, she discusses the complex process of transforming ideas into viable treatments for paralysis. From the mechanical science behind spinal cord injury to the intricate design of safe, effective therapies, Dr. Martinez explains how her team uses electrical stimulation to bypass damaged pathways and stimulate both the brain and peripheral nervous system with precise timing, frequency, and duration to mimic natural movement. The path to success has been a long one, filled with years of trial and error, but the results from her lab are extraordinary. Dr. Martinez also talks about some hurdles facing spinal cord injury research such as gaining a deeper understanding of the spinal cord's complex network, accelerating animal-to-human translation, and the ever-present challenge of securing funding for this important work. This episode is a testament to the unwavering dedication and passion of those on the frontlines of spinal cord injury research—true heroes pushing the boundaries of science to offer hope and healing to those living with paralysis. Special thanks to Dr. Martinez for being our guest! It’s our last episode of Summer School, and today we welcome back clinical psychologist (and “clinical cousin” of Hugh and Josh), James van Cuylenburg. In this episode, James tells us EVERYTHING we need to know about our relationships… well almost everything…there’s a lot to cover. From attachment styles, to breaking trust, to learning how to own your feelings and navigating coupledom through life’s changing seasons. Getting into the nitty gritty, Hugh asks James about intimacy and what happens when you’re not…. having any. And how to start a conversation with your kids about pornography. Relationships make life worth living and whether they’re with an intimate partner, a friend, or yourself, they should be cherished and treated with care. James, we thank you for your guidance. Send us a text- On-Demand Programme Link - https://mailchi.mp/bb2a7b851246/kairos-centreCreate new thinking to change the behaviour. How? A step at a time, to re-wire the brain.Create new Neural Pathways progressively over time. What is this thing called Neural Pathways? The hamster wheel patterns of behaviours. Those habits. The programming so that when you "feel", you "think", then you "do".At least, that's how it started out in the early days. Then repetition, took out the need to "think". "I feel", got paired up with "I do" and no brain thinking was needed any longer. The neural pathway was reinforced by repeat habit/hamster wheel use, such that it became an automatic, even autonomic response. (Thinking = Cognition), lead to Behaviour. The pairing became entrenched and so to change the patterns of what are paired up, means rewiring the brain with new positive pairings.Yep, that sounds painful, but actually we won't need to call in a Neurosurgeon for brain surgery, to do it. In podcast Episode 176 - How To Like Something That You Don't Like, I share my personal journey of learning to like something I previously didn't enjoy - fall. I explain how a conversation with a friend made me realize that instead of dreading fall as a precursor to winter, I could focus on actually liking the fall season. I outline several good reasons to change what you like, such as adding diversity and experience to your life, making things easier, and simply because "why not?" However, I also caution against changing what you like just to fit in or be accepted by others. Your unique preferences are valuable. To help listeners learn to like something new, I provide seven steps: be curious, observe how others enjoy it, practice enjoying it, lean into it, change your language, be open to being wrong, and understand it may take time. I share my own experiences applying these steps to fall, and encourage everyone to try this experiment with something in their own lives. As always, if you found this episode helpful, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren't already, share this episode with your friends and missionaries you know, and write a review. Do you prefer multistory episodes, single story episodes, or a mix? Let us know! In today's episode of Discover Daily, we explore how Apple secured a symbolic $250 victory in its ongoing smartwatch patent battle with Masimo, highlighting the complex landscape of intellectual property rights in wearable technology. While the amount seems minimal, Apple's true goal is blocking Masimo's smartwatch sales through an injunction, following Masimo's successful effort to temporarily ban certain Apple Watch models last December.NASA's remarkable economic impact takes center stage as the space agency generated $75.6 billion for the U.S. economy in fiscal year 2023, nearly tripling its $25.4 billion budget. The Moon to Mars initiative alone created $23.8 billion in economic output and supported over 96,000 jobs, with benefits spreading across 45 states and California leading at $18.5 billion in economic impact.Lastly, a new Yale study reveals how visual clutter fundamentally alters neural information flow in our brains, particularly affecting the primary visual cortex. The research demonstrates that cluttered environments not only impact our ability to process visual information but also lead to increased stress levels, poor sleep quality, and compromised cognitive function. The study's findings suggest that our tolerance for clutter might be partly hardwired into our neural architecture, though the brain remains remarkably adaptable to organized environments. From Perplexity's Discover Feed:https://www.perplexity.ai/page/apple-wins-250-in-smartwatch-f-snVBeMZMQNOXP3CYsUnp8ghttps://www.perplexity.ai/page/nasa-made-76b-for-us-economy-qxy7T4nYTT2s86KWvQf0zwhttps://www.perplexity.ai/page/neural-impact-of-clutter-gc2Z6YuvRyOLBZEO14VlcAPerplexity is the fastest and most powerful way to search the web.
