I'm also noticing a desire for this house cleaning (or weight loss/health) struggle to be serving some sort of higher purpose - or relating to struggle or lack of action in these spaces like it's some sort of self-sabotage, but in the absence of a self…. it can't quite be self-sabotage can it? And what's the point to the identity of relating to one's behavior as self-sabotage. Why would identity do that?

When you're aware of the underlying reasoning, you can start working *with* yourself rather than against yourself. Let's talk about it more in this episode.

Colli Christante grew up eating whole foods and very little sugar, and she brought up her daughter that way too. She doesn't remember her daughter being sick as a child.Naturally, as she grew up, Colli's daughter experimented with sugar and other types of processed foods, but then when she herself became a mother, she reverted back to whole foods.Colli tells about her experience with alcoholism, first with her father and then with her ex-husband. Their consumption of alcohol affected their mood and behaviour... causing suffering for herself and her family. The thing is, alcohol affects the body in a similar way to sugar.Colli's field of expertise is as a family trauma therapist. From her practice and her personal experience, she knows all about trauma and self-sabotage. In this episode, we talk about the connection between trauma and emotional eating, and how consuming sugar and alcohol can be a form of self-sabotage. We also talk about how to deal with reaching out for sugary foods or alcohol as a coping mechanism, and how to create a "new normal". Sometimes I was eating in alignment with my goals, and sometimes I was not” • “I started exploring my own relationship with food and developed an interest in helping others heal in that area.” • I was “Super burnt out with Diets” 2. Chaos and food / eating • Cravings: When she was a child, she wasn't aware of cravings. It was when she was an adult she became more aware: “Food can be a form of self-protection.” • There is usually something else going on that is causing overeating • High / Low Blood sugar can cause cravings • When “there is something wrong with me,” a craving began to eat • Physical / Emotional Cravings are both very real. • Possible Physical Factors behind “Cravings” • If you are craving something shortly after eating, and • You are feeling your energy is dipping • Hangry • Arriving at a meal ravenous • Possible Emotional Factors behind “Cravings: • Phantom Hunger • Emotionally craving something • Guilt and Shame around a food choice • An insatiable craving around a food choice • Eating when you don't want the food 3. What is self-sabotage? “When we are actively or passively stopping ourselves from reaching our own goals.” (Or…”I'm getting in my own way”) • You want to achieve a goal, but it doesn't happen, and you don't know why • You are doing behaviors with food you don't want • There is guilt or shame after behaviors with food • Self-Sabotage can show up in other areas like work, relationships, shopping 4. What did Laura learn about self-sabotage? • “My past is still controlling me!” She was bullied at school, this still affected her • The fear of “being misunderstood” caused emotional eating • Food as “A safe place” when the world misunderstands you • You can learn to “bully” or “control” yourself when you feel out of control • Consider possible subconscious reasons for self-sabotage • The protective side of you can actually (subconsciously) cause self-sabotage! 5. The sponsor for today's show is RASA! Rasa coffee alternative is a delicious, healthy coffee substitute made from adaptogenic herbs. Coffee steals energy from tomorrow to use today. Drinking coffee doesn't actually GIVE us energy. It's just borrowed. This is why I love RASA. The adaptogenic herbs in these blends actually support and boost your body's adrenal glands helping to restore your body's natural energy. They also help boost your body's resiliency to stress as well. You can brew these coffee alternatives in a french press for 10-15 minutes. You can have them any time of the day or in place of coffee for an extra boost and increase in mental clarity and alertness. Personally I find that if I consume RASA every day, my overall daily energy improves, my sleep improves, and so many of my clients who have blood sugar crashes REALLY see improvement with their blood sugar levels when having RASA on a regular basis. My personal favorite is the Cacao and I love mixing it with some full fat coconut milk. Behaviour change is hard stuff, am I right? “I want to be different but… I can't seem to make it happen”... might feel like a familiar story and you're not alone if it is. Diet and health transformation has a dirty little secret and it's that ‘information does not equal transformation'. We know this because the world has the internet and if more information made us better then we'd all be rich, sexy and happy.   We've all heard the definition of insanity. It is doing the same thing but expecting different results. While I know the definition, I'm no stranger to living this way, desiring change, even investing everything into it but living stuck in my old patterns. Of course, I don't intentionally keep myself stuck. It's an unintentionally subconscious response repeated when we fail to live aware of our drive to self-sabotage. Let me define self-sabotage to give you an adequate description of what we're talking about. Self-sabotage is when we actively or passively take steps to prevent ourselves from reaching our goals. Most likely, you don't go around bragging about your latest attempt to self-sabotage, but if we're not careful or aware of it, self-sabotage will be the very thing that keeps you from moving forward. We all do it or have done it until we learn how to undo it. Self-sabotage is the natural pull of life, but when we know better, we can do better. We can learn to overcome self-sabotage. Today on the podcast, I talk with mindset expert, licensed clinical psychologist, and certified weight management specialist Dr. Candice Seti. We dive into the habit of self-sabotage and the key steps to overcome it. Trust me, it's not as difficult as we make   Learn more: https://thelivingwell.com/238

In today's episode, Shirani expands on the topic of how supremacy culture shows up in our everyday life by talking about self sabotage.  There's a misconception that if you just don't listen to that self sabotaging voice, you'll be able to just push through and do whatever needs to be done. Just. Push. Through. But that's exactly what supremacy culture wants us to do; to force, to push against, to oppress. Because self sabotage isn't actually sabotage; what most people call self sabotage is actually self preservation. In today's episode, we cover:  Supremacy culture's lies about self sabotage  Going down the rabbit hole of self sabotage   How to break the loop of self sabotage  Compassionate curiosity: create an alliance not divisiveness.  Quotes  [00:08:51] Self sabotage isn't actually sabotage. That's just one of the lies that has sprung forth from the well of supremacy culture's lies in order to keep beating up on yourself. Because if supremacy culture is not beating up on you, and your parents aren't beating up on you or your boss isn't  beating up on you, well somebody has to beat up on you and that somebody is going to be you.  [00:17:07] If there is a part of you that has been conditioned to believe, whether that be personally, ancestrally, intergenerationally or collectively, if there is a part of you that has been conditioned to believe that is unsafe for you to be seen in this position of power, or for you to even have a position of quote unquote power, then of course, your protector parts are going to kick up, sound the alarm bells and activate self preservation, because it just wants to keep you safe. In this episode, you'll learn how Kelly went from personal trainer to becoming a top speaker and thought leader in the fitness field, why we sabotage ourselves, important signs to pay attention to if you are sabotaging yourself (and what to do next), the mental tricks to attacking self-sabotage, an ideal way to behave if you are afraid to speak on stage, and where to focus your attention once making the decision to move out of self-sabotage. Why We Self-Sabotage with Food & How to Stop   https://psychologyofeating.online/ss/ Are you ready to transform your relationship with food in a lasting and meaningful way? What if you could help others find the path to greater freedom and joy with food as well?   Food and body challenges aren't confined to certain regions or countries, they're truly found all over the world as today's episode of the podcast demonstrates. Samantha is a 43-year old originally from Johannesburg, South Africa who is now living in London, and is struggling with a variety of eating challenges, including binge eating, emotional eating, and overeating. After quitting smoking 8 years ago, Samantha put on weight that she has since not been able to shed. She's tried plant-based diets to good effect, but eventually returns to unwanted eating habits. Tired of struggling with her weight, low energy, poor sleep, and weak digestion, Samantha turns to eating psychology expert, Marc David, who helps her find a deeper understanding of what's driving her food challenges.   Key Insights: Certain diets like Keto, Paleo, or plant-based diets can be therapeutic for the body — whether we stay on them over the long-term or use them as tools to recalibrate our health. Whatever our approach to eating may be, it's important to recognize that these diets don't address the psychological drivers behind our eating challenges. Taking this a step further, we can't fix eating challenges — which stem from our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs — using nutrition alone. To address unwanted eating habits such as binge eating or emotional eating, we need to understand and ultimately transform our psychology. A common way we stay stuck in our eating challenges is by self-attacking ourselves that we have these challenges in the first place. This negative self talk can be truly endless. If you find yourself saying things like “why can't I just get over this already?” or “I'm terrible at controlling myself around food,” it's time to bring loving attention to these thoughts. Look for where you can begin to make small shifts in your internal self talk. Where can you acknowledge your efforts and your progress, no matter how small? Recognizing the shifts you're making helps solidify those positive changes over time.  No matter what your brain may try to convince you of, remember you're a unique and wonderful human. You're not broken, there's nothing to fix. Keep reminding yourself of this … eventually, you'll feel the truth of that in your bones. With his dual training in clinical nutrition and psychology, Marc David has spent the last 40 years helping people around the world heal their relationship with food. As the Founder of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, he reaches millions each year through his books, speaking engagements, celebrated podcast series, and his internationally-acclaimed Mind Body Eating Coach Certification Training.    Having your own challenges with food and body?
