What if your biggest breakthroughs aren't blocked by willpower, but by old code running in the background? We sit down with hypnotherapist and NLP coach Matt Johnson to map the invisible forces that shape behavior—childhood imprints, nervous system alarms, and identity “thermostats”—and then we show how to change them.Matt recounts the hiking accident that led to years of light and sound sensitivity, the SPECT scan that revealed PTSD, and the turning point where traditional treatments gave way to targeted work with hypnosis, neurolinguistic programming, and somatic tools. You'll hear how the subconscious computes rather than reasons, why ages zero to seven are so pivotal, and how “parts” formed in childhood keep trying to protect you as an adult. We walk through parts integration to resolve inner conflict, reframe people pleasing and imposter syndrome, and align self-worth with assertiveness. If you've ever hit a goal and mysteriously stalled, Matt's identity thermostat concept and pain-versus-pleasure strategy will make sense of self-sabotage. We get tactical with habit design—1% daily gains, stacking joy so “fun gets done,” and the Navy SEAL-style 10-second focus to push through discomfort. Matt also demonstrates quick, portable NLP exercises: a power-scaling visualization to shrink intimidation and a “spin” technique to unwind body tension in minutes. Along the way, we compare hypnosis, NLP, EMDR, and somatic release so you can choose the right tool for your nervous system. You'll leave with a practical toolkit and a hopeful frame: if an imprint can be installed, it can be updated. Explore Matt's weekly hypnosis program, Limitless by Design, and grab his free NLP Mind Magic course for step-by-step exercises on perfectionism, procrastination, rejection, and more. Like every time you get close to the dream, something quietly convinces you to stop?In this episode—the third installment of the Limiting Beliefs series—we explore one of the most dangerous lies: the kind that sounds like your own voice. The kind that doesn't shout “You can't,” but gently whispers, “This is just who you are.”Terri breaks down how fear disguises itself as identity, weaving itself into your inner monologue until you're no longer sure what's you and what's survival. Using the powerful metaphor of painted stripes on a zebra, she illustrates how false narratives form over time, often beginning with childhood conditioning, rejection, failure, or shame. These “painted-on” beliefs start to feel real because they've been repeated—by others, by your inner critic, and eventually, by your own actions.Through personal storytelling and real-time reflection, Terri explores her own fear of visibility and how it shaped her approach to success. She unpacks the ways in which staying behind the scenes became a defense mechanism—one she misidentified as a personality trait. This episode invites you to ask bold questions, challenge inherited scripts, and reclaim the parts of you that got buried under repetition and fear.Whether you're building a dream, breaking old patterns, or simply trying to understand your resistance to growth, this conversation will help you spot the fraud you've been living with—and remind you of the truth underneath.#LimitingBeliefs #PersonalGrowthPodcast #Fear #Identity #SelfSabotage #MindsetShift #IdentityWork #OvercomingFear #DreamChaser #MentalBlocks #Emotional #Healing  #shadowwork  #FearOfSuccess #AuthenticSelf #ThoughtsOfADreamer

The #1 Thing Robbing You of Your Happiness (And How to Fix It)

The Rich Mind Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 28, 2025 34:21 Transcription Available

Episode Summary: This episode of the Rich Mind Podcast tackles one of the biggest hidden sources of unhappiness: our expectations. Randy and Greg explore the "happiness gap"—the space between our current reality and the future we expect—and how this gap dictates our level of satisfaction in life. They discuss the two primary forms of toxic expectations: those we place on others (often leading to disappointment) and the unrealistic, self-imposed expectations we place on ourselves (often leading to burnout and self-sabotage). Drawing on wisdom from Jim Rohn and Earl Nightingale, this conversation is a guide to letting go of rigid outcomes, practicing gratitude for the present, and cultivating a healthy sense of expectancy for a great future without being attached to the details.   Key Takeaways:   Your level of happiness is determined by the size of the gap between your expectations and your current reality.   Placing rigid expectations on other people is a setup for disappointment, as you cannot control their actions. We often carry childhood disappointments (like Randy's Trans Am story) into our adult lives, creating a paradigm of expecting the worst. There is a crucial difference between having high standards and having unrealistic, self-sabotaging expectations of yourself. You can't force inspiration or progress; sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is give yourself grace and relax. A powerful framework for a happy life, from Earl Nightingale, is to combine daily gratitude for what you have with a positive expectancy for what's to come. A great journal prompt to uncover hidden frustrations is: "What expectation is driving my frustration right now?"   Questions Answered in This Episode:   How do our expectations directly affect our happiness? Why is placing expectations on other people a recipe for disappointment? How can you stop setting unrealistic expectations for yourself? What is the difference between healthy expectancy and toxic expectations? How can you give yourself grace without losing your drive to achieve? What did Earl Nightingale mean by "gratitude and expectancy"? How can journaling help you identify and manage your expectations? Over the years of being a fellow podcast listener myself, I've received immense benefit from listening to coaches and practitioners I've been inspired by offering anonymous coaching sessions to their listeners. Every time I tuned in, I found these sessions to be an incredible opportunity to get to know myself on a deeper level. And while the content of what might be occurring for someone is unique to them, the themes that are addressed are, in my eyes, universal. Themes that we all need to face and work through...Whether it's moving through self-sabotage, overcoming anxiety, finding forgiveness, accepting ourselves for who we are, or learning to lead ourselves better. To offer you deeper context of my world outside of being a podcaster, and to give you a glimpse into my work as a coach and somatic practitioner, I decided to periodically release these experiences, where I guide someone through a process of the work I offer in-person, which includes a 1-hour coaching session and a 1-hour breathwork journey. In this session, you'll have the opportunity to listen to the challenges Artur is navigating as we explore themes of self-sabotage, self-trust, and self-leadership. Like many men I work with, Artur wanted to address the blocks holding him back from doing the work he deeply wants to step into, moving past patterns of self-sabotage.After a few minutes of investigation, and directing my curiosity toward his experience, we oriented our session around his internal world, something I commonly do within these sessions. What Artur ended up finding was a surprise to him, as he was completely oblivious to the blind spots right in front of him. If you listen closely, I would argue that this is going to be a session many of you might be able to relate to...It highlights that self-leadership isn't just about the execution of our task lists or the actions we want to take, but rather, it often begins by being there for ourselves in the moments that are silently demanding it. This one was for sure a relatable one for me, and I know for many high performers I work with as well. If you enjoyed this style of podcast and found value in it, my encouragement is to let me know: reach out, leave a comment or give the podcast a 5-star rating to show it some extra love. If you've been a listener of this show for a while, you'll know that I truly do my best to offer a platform that brings genuine value, consistently demanding excellence of myself in the process. And the reason why is because I genuinely care and I want men to succeed. My aspiration is to create the kind of roadmap I wish I had when I was walking through the thick of it on my own journey.I hope you enjoy this one.—Connect with Alex Lehmann:

Most people around the world neglect self! People are more focused on minding the business of others rather than their own and it's one huge reason people remain the same. When you don't allow inner healing and self love, you don't mentally mature and because of it you're easily brainwashed, influenced, convinced, bamboolzled, and deceived by other broken people who are from all walks of life. People normally don't think in depth about things until they're directly affected, until then, they will go along to get along because they want to belong. That type of mentality is keeping many people in broken states of mind! Ever notice how you can want something with your whole heart — peace, consistency, freedom — and still keep doing the opposite? You start to grow… then you pull back. You feel joy… then you create chaos. You commit to healing… then you numb out again. That's not because you're weak. That's self-sabotage — and it's your brain's sneaky way of trying to keep you “safe.” See, your mind is wired for familiar, not for freedom. So every time you try to change — even in a good way — your subconscious sounds the alarm: “This feels unsafe!” And you slip right back into old habits and survival patterns. But here's the good news: You can rewire it.

This listener Q&A episode tackles the most common fasting challenges with evidence-based solutions, addressing Monica's self-sabotage pattern after reaching new low weights by explaining the body's three-pronged defense system (defend phase preventing further loss, restore phase increasing regain rate, and prevent phase reducing future weight loss probability) that creates powerful physiological resistance requiring equally comprehensive counter-strategies. The hosts reveal how metabolic adaptation activates during weight loss like a toddler throwing a tantrum, making the body fight harder at new weight thresholds, while providing practical "when-then planning" to manage the slippery slope of increased hunger and reduced willpower that emerges from dopamine deficits caused by sleep disruption and stress. They address Emily's two-week plateau after losing seven pounds initially with 20:4 fasting, explaining the critical distinction between water weight loss from glycogen depletion versus true fat loss, recommending the Blueprint to Fasting for Fat Loss resource and strategic window timing adjustments to restart momentum. Patty's wine consumption question during OMAD receives honest analysis of alcohol's metabolic priority over fat burning, sleep disruption effects reducing next-day metabolic efficiency, and dose-dependent impact on hormones especially for postmenopausal women, with recommendations to shift from daily to occasional consumption strategically timed for better recovery. The episode covers supplement timing during fasting windows (berberine, creatine recommended daily for consistency despite potential stomach sensitivity), addresses sleep disturbances from excessive 48-hour fasting during maintenance (recommending 24-36 hour alternatives to protect sleep quality over marginal metabolic gains), and explains post-meal walking benefits for glucose management through skeletal muscle uptake and improved insulin sensitivity, even when continuous glucose monitors show delayed rather than reduced spikes. Throughout, Scott and Tommy emphasize viewing fat loss and maintenance as a continuum rather than separate phases, building sustainable habits during weight loss that seamlessly transition to lifelong maintenance, positioning their upcoming pre-Thanksgiving seven-day challenge as strategically timed to establish momentum before the holiday season while reinforcing that successful fasting integration requires addressing foundational lifestyle factors of stress, sleep, food relationships, and mindset alongside fasting schedules. Take the NEW FASTING PERSONA QUIZ! - The Key to Unlocking Sustainable Weight Loss With Fasting! Resources and Downloads: SIGN UP FOR THE DROP OF THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO BLOOD SUGAR CONTROL GRAB THE OPTIMAL RANGES FOR LAB WORK HERE! - NEW RESOURCE! FREE RESOURCE - DOWNLOAD THE NEW BLUEPRINT TO FASTING FOR FAT LOSS! SLEEP GUIDE DIRECT DOWNLOAD DOWNLOAD THE FASTING TRANSFORMATION JOURNAL HERE! Partner Links: Get your FREE BOX OF LMNT hydration support for the perfect electrolyte balance for your fasting lifestyle with your first purchase here! Get 25% off a Keto-Mojo blood glucose and ketone monitor (discount shown at checkout)! Click here! Our Community: Let's continue the conversation. Nick Wright reacts to Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the Kansas City Chiefs' dominant 37-20 win over Lamar Jackson, Derrick Henry, and the Baltimore Ravens in Week 4 of the NFL season. Nick breaks down why he's not surprised to see the Chiefs offense come back to life with Xavier Worthy's return, what's wrong with Lamar in big games, and how he feels about both AFC contenders moving forward. Next, Nick reacts to Shedeur Sanders' "silent interview" following the announcement that Dillon Gabriel will be the Cleveland Browns' starting QB ahead of their Week 5 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings after the team benched Joe Flacco. Is Shedeur sabotaging his own career? How has Deion Sanders impacted the early stages of Shedeur's career? Later, Nick discusses whether the San Francisco 49ers should regret signing Brock Purdy to one of the largest QB contracts in the league. #VolumeSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
