Send us Fan MailThis Podcast is part of a 10-year project to complete an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes:  Walking in Righteousness - Speaking the Truth in Love. (Ephesians 4: 25)Saved by Grace, United in One Body. Earlier in this letter, Paul reminded us that it is: “By grace you have been saved through faith… it is the gift of God…” (Ephesians 2:8) We are saved by grace, not by our performance. And when we trust Christ, we become part of something bigger than ourselves — the Body of Christ. We are joined to one another. We belong to one another. We grow with one another. We serve one another. That's why Paul said yesterday our purpose is “…to equip His people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up…” (Ephesians 4:12–13)The Journey of Spiritual Growth. In yesterday's study, we were given three foundational principles: 1. Put off the old self“…put off your former way of life…” (4:22)Take off the old habits, the old attitudes, the old patterns of sin — like taking off an old coat. 2. Renew your mind“…be made new in the attitude of your minds…” (4:23)Let Scripture reshape your thinking so you begin to think God's thoughts rather than simply reacting to the world around you. 3. Put on the new self“…put on the new self, created to be like God…” (4:24)Replace old vices with new virtues. Replace old habits with new patterns. Replace old ways of speaking with new ways of speaking. But now — beginning in verse 25 — Paul gets specific. He gives us five concrete examples of what spiritual growth looks like in everyday life. And over the next five episodes, we're going to take each one in turn. And the first one — the foundation of all the others — is this found in this single verse, verse 25…. Our single verse today…Support the showThis podcast is not associated with the Bible Project YouTube channel or any other associated podcasts that use the name 'Bible Project'. (Eph 4: 17-24)Some people grow up… and some people grow old. You've probably met both kinds. Some Christians grow up in Christ — they become wiser, steadier, more loving, more Christlike. Others grow old in Christ —attending church, learning the religious language, but never really changing. In this passage, Paul is urging us to be the first kind of people, those who grow up spiritually and become more like Christ. And he describes this growth using a phrase we've seen before: “Walking in righteousness.”Over the coming episodes, we're going to continue to look at the different ways Paul says we should “walk.” But today, we begin with this foundational one: Walking in righteousness… walking in holiness. So how do we grow spiritually and live righteously without becoming self‑righteous? How do we display holiness without becoming holier‑than‑thou? Paul begins to answer that in verse today's passage, Ephesians 4:17–24….Support the showThis podcast is not associated with the Bible Project YouTube channel or any other associated podcasts that use the name 'Bible Project'. Didn't we already talk about unity, diversity, and spiritual gifts? Yes — but now we're going to slow down and look at something far more practical:  How do we actually serve one another? How do we walk in servanthood? How do we minister to real people in real situations?Every believer has a spiritual gift. Every believer has a calling. Every believer has a ministry. The only difference is the type of gift we bring. So today, I want to lay out some general principles that apply to all pastoral ministries. (Ephesians 4  4-16) Unity…. It's one of the most beautiful words in the Christian vocabulary — and one of the hardest to maintain. How do we keep good relationships? How do we preserve unity in our families, in our churches, and even across the worldwide body of Christ?  Because division is a disease. Division drains strength from a family. Division weakens a church that should be strong. Division distracts a fellowship from its mission and forces it to turn inward, tending its wounds instead of reaching the world. .... And if division goes untreated long enough, it can even become terminal. So, how do we create unity among such a wide diversity of people who all call themselves followers of Jesus? I believe the answers are found right here in Ephesians chapter 4….Support the showThis podcast is not associated with the Bible Project YouTube channel or any other associated podcasts that use the name 'Bible Project'. (Overview of Chapters 4–6)Over the last few episodes, we've walked slowly and carefully through chapters 1 to 3 — the soaring theological heights of this letter. We've explored our calling, our identity, our salvation, our unity, and the immeasurable love of Christ.  We've listened to Paul pray for us — that we would be strengthened in the inner being, rooted and grounded in love, and filled with all the fullness of God. And now, as we turn the page into chapter 4, something important happens. The tone shifts. The focus shifts. The direction shifts. The first half of Ephesians tells us who we are in Christ. The second half tells us how to live because of who we are in Christ. Paul moves from doctrine to duty, from belief to behaviour, from revelation to response, but before we dive into the details of chapter 4, I want us to take a moment and look forward at the whole landscape of the second half of this letter. Because Paul is about to show us what a life shaped by the gospel actually looks like. This is where theology becomes lifestyle. This is where belief becomes behaviour. This is where the gospel moves from the head to the hands, from the heart to the home, from Sunday to Monday and every other day of the week..So today, we're going to take a bird's‑eye view of Ephesians chapters 4 to 6 — to see the shape, the flow, and the rhythm of what Paul is calling us into….Support the showThis podcast is not associated with the Bible Project YouTube channel or any other associated podcasts that use the name 'Bible Project'. In fact, he writes to the Ephesians so that they won't be discouraged on his behalf.I don't pretend to have all the answers. But today I can tell you how the Apostle Paul handled discouragement, because he faced it, he lived through it, and he wrote about it with remarkable clarity.  And to see how Paul dealt with discouragement, we only need to look at what he says here in Ephesians 3….Support the showThis podcast is not associated with the Bible Project YouTube channel or any other associated podcasts that use the name 'Bible Project'. A question that every Christian, in every generation, needs to hear: How is your memory? Because Paul knows something we often forget:  The Christian life is not only shaped by what we believe, but by what we remember. So, in this next passage, Paul gently takes the church by the shoulders and says: “Remember.”This is a passage about identity, but it is also a passage about unity, reconciliation, and belonging. (Eph 2: 1-10 Again)Today, we're doing something a little unusual. We're going back into the waters of Ephesians 2:1–10.  Back into one of the richest, most breathtaking passages in the entire New Testament. Because some passages of Scripture are like a shallow stream, refreshing, simple, easy to cross…. But others… others are oceans, and Ephesians 2:1–10 is such an ocean. We've already walked through this passage once, but the more you sit with these verses, the more you realise there is more here. This is a passage that refuses to be exhausted.  So today, we're going back — not because we missed something, but because Paul has given us something so rich that it deserves to be savoured again. We're going to linger, and we're going to let the text speak again, and hopefully speak deeper. So, take a breath, settle your heart, and come with me again into the deep waters of Ephesians 2:1–10. Send us Fan MailThis Podcast is part of a 10-year project to complete an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: From Death to Life - What are we saved for? (Ephesians 2: 1–10)If you've been following along, you'll know that the last few episodes have taken us up the mountain with Paul. We've stood with him as he blessed God for every spiritual blessing in Christ. We've listened as he prayed that the eyes of our hearts would be opened. We've explored the hope, the inheritance, and the power that belong to every believer. But today… He takes us down the mountain, back into the valley of human experience, back into the story of who we once were, back into the darkness from which God rescued us.  Because before you can appreciate the height of God's grace, you must understand the depth from which He lifted you. Ephesians 2:1–10 is one of the most breathtaking passages in the entire New Testament. It is the gospel in ten verses. It is the Christian story in miniature. It is your testimony and mine, told with clarity, honesty, and astonishing beauty. This passage will tell us who we were, what God has done, and who we are now. So, take a breath. Settle your heart. And let's step together into one of the greatest passages ever written.Support the showThis podcast is not associated with the Bible Project YouTube channel or any other associated podcasts that use the name 'Bible Project'. (Ephesians 1: 15-23)When Paul reaches verse 15 of Ephesians 1, something beautiful happens. He pauses. He reflects. And he gives thanks. He gives thanks, not for buildings, not for finance, not for programmes, and not for influence. He gives thanks for people — for their faith in Christ and their love for all God's people. These two qualities, Paul says, are the unmistakable marks of a true church. Not cleverness. Not the charisma of the leader. Not size. Not even success.... But faith and love.Faith in the Lord Jesus — a deep, living trust. And Love for God's people, a practical, sacrificial affection.Because Paul knows something we often forget. That you cannot love Christ without loving people, you cannot love people without being involved with them. You cannot grow in faith without other Christian believers.Support the showThis podcast is not associated with the Bible Project YouTube channel or any other associated podcasts that use the name 'Bible Project'. To hear more, visit www.serioustrouble.showThis week's Serious Trouble comes to you live from a perch overlooking the soon-to-be-built Trump National Championship Golf Links at East Potomac Park by Donald J. Trump. Or, maybe — as I looked over the federally administered national parkland along the Potomac River, I was looking at a suite of projects where the president's “just do things” approach has faced intermittent trouble in court. For example: Trump's name has been ordered down off the Kennedy Center, which is once again just the Kennedy Center. We discuss challenges to his “anti-weaponization fund," and the status of various lawsuits aimed at stopping the fund and the ripeness and standing challenges they face. And we look at the “you fucking dingus” doctrine — the extent to which Trump's most cartoonish actions cause judges to hunt for ways to respond to them. That's for free subscribers. Paying subscribers also get:* Alexis Wilkins vs. MS NOW, and the George Costanza theory of actual malice.* The junior lawyer leading the James Comey seashell prosecution steps down (as lawyers flee the government more broadly) while a judge in another case rules that “8647” is not a true threat.* Trump really doesn't want to pay tariff refunds, and Ilya Somin argues the tariff cases show how CASA has created a mess.* A CIA official gets indicted for lying on his resume, but really for stealing tens of millions of dollars worth of gold that he was somehow able to order to his office.* George Santos appears to be under investigation for insider trading in a prediction market about George Santos. * A gadfly blogger in Ohio is arrested for texting an image to a state senator that apparently depicts Shrek masturbating. Is that a crime?

(Ephesians 1: 3-14)Why do people go to church? It's a question we rarely ask out loud, but it sits quietly beneath the surface of every church on every Sunday morning. Some people go because they always have, and their parents went. Some go because they feel they ought to. Some go because they're lonely and some go because they're hurting. Some go because they're hungry, not for food, but for meaning, for hope, for God.…. And some — if we're honest — aren't entirely sure why they go at all.But Paul, in Ephesians 1:3–14, gives us an answer that is far deeper, far richer, far more beautiful than any of those surface‑level reasons. He tells us that the reason we gather, the reason we worship, the reason we belong to a church at all… is because God has done something astonishing for us in Christ.Support the showThis podcast is not associated with the Bible Project YouTube channel or any other associated podcasts that use the name 'Bible Project'. Episode,  Season 3 - The Medieval Church - Episode 9.Welcome:What happens when the church becomes too clever? What happens when faith is no longer something to be lived, but something to be analysed? That is the world we stepped into with Peter Abelard in our last episode. But not everyone welcomed that change, because, amid that rising tide of intellectual confidence, another voice began to speak. His name was Bernard of Clairvaux. And these two worldviews would collide. The world of the philosopher…. and the world of the monk. Their conflict would not just shape their own lives, but it would shape the direction of medieval theology itself. And this still matters because, at its core, this is not just a story about the twelfth century. It is a story about every generation of the church. So, join me in today's episode…. As we step into the life, the passion, and the fierce convictions of Bernard of Clairvaux. The man who stood against the rising tide of intellectualism and called the church back to what, well, maybe to the heart of the Christian faith. For a complete list of sources and references used in the production of this episode, please visit my FREE Patreon page.Support the showThis podcast is not associated with the Bible Project YouTube channel or any other associated podcasts that use the name 'Bible Project'. (2 Kings 23:31-25:30)Choices have consequences. Good choices bring good consequences. Bad choices bring bad consequences, and the Bible is full of stories that illustrate both. Some made wise choices, some made foolish choices, and the consequences were very different. The consequences are not always the same. We've been walking through the book of 2 Kings, the book in the Bible that traces the slow, tragic decline of the nation of Israel, and especially the southern kingdom of Judah.... And now we've reached the end. From the end of chapter 23 through chapters 24 and 25, we watch the final unravelling of the nation, king after king, bad choice after bad choice, and consequence after consequence. Today's lengthy closing passage will show us something important: Individuals can make wrong choices, and so can nations….And both experience consequences….Support the showThis podcast is not associated with the Bible Project YouTube channel or any other associated podcasts that use the name 'Bible Project'. (2 Kings 23: 1-30)Now we know that physical growth just… happens. Feed a child, give it time, and they grow. But spiritual growth? That doesn't “just happen.” It requires something. It involves choices, and it demands a response. And as we've been walking through the book of 2 Kings, we've now come to a chapter that beautifully illustrates the essential elements of spiritual growth — the very ingredients of revival. It shows us how revival begins, and it shows us how it begins with you….Support the showThis podcast is not associated with the Bible Project YouTube channel or any other associated podcasts that use the name 'Bible Project'. Text me a question I might answer through the showRecent studies indicate that about one in four Americans experience some form of family estrangement.  This statistic is alarming, as many individuals report feeling deeply troubled by this estrangement. A significant portion of these estrangements occur between parents and their adult children, emphasizing the need for understanding and addressing familial relationships.  In this podcast and video, expert guest Dr. Tamsen Thorpe and I explore the causes, implications and solutions for family estrangement, drawing on insights from experts in psychology and family dynamics. What is Family Estrangement?Family estrangement refers to a cutoff in communication or contact between family members. It ranges from complete no contact to limited interactions, such as only connecting through social media. It is not always a straightforward situation; some families might maintain superficial ties while feeling emotionally distant. Understanding these nuances is crucial for addressing the underlying issues that contribute to estrangement.Support the showThis show was created with love on my volunteer time.   One small gift you can give me back is to take the time to leave the show a comment and rating on iTunes.  You can also support the production costs of the show by buying me a $3 coffee at buymeacoffee.com/dralexandra.  I will be encouraged by your support, and thank you!

The Atlantic has reported that Kash Patel is often drunk and derelict in his duties as FBI Director. But Patel says he's only guilty of working really hard, and he's suing the Atlantic. He's got a theory he says is a “slam dunk” — The Atlantic defamed him with actual malice because he denied the accusations against him but they printed him anyway. That theory didn't work for Trump against The Wall Street Journal and it didn't work for Patel against Frank Figliuzzi Jr., who accused him of being a nightclub rat on Morning Joe, but maybe it will work this time? (It won't).Also, his lawyer did something incompetent — shocker. And more formidably, former Capitol Police officer Shauni Kerkhoff is suing The Blaze and two of its “journalists” for accusing her of being the Capitol Hill pipe bomber, on the basis of a shoddy “gait analysis” alleging that her limp matched the way the bomber walked on surveillance video. Proving actual malice is hard — as a police officer, Kerkhoff is treated as a public figure in the coverage of her work — but the journalists' persistence with their accusations even after Brian Cole was arrested for the bombings strengthens her case. She also has very real defamation lawyers: Clare Locke, the firm that got the huge settlement out of Fox for Dominion Voting Systems. That defamation coverage is for all listeners this week. In the full premium episode, there's also:* Even more defamation coverage, with Laura Loomer losing at summary judgment in her lawsuit against Bill Maher, and Megan Thee Stallion failing to obtain a court order instructing Milagro Cooper to stop talking about her.* A preliminary injunction telling Apple and Facebook to restore anti-ICE resources they took off the internet at the government's behest.* The SPLC indictment.* A settlement for Carter Page.* A Sam Bankman-Fried update.* And a court ruling that says it's legal to be a huge dick in Alabama.Upgrade your subscription to receive all of our episodes at serioustrouble.show.
