On this week's show, Nadira Goffe sits in for Julia Turner. The hosts first begin by exploring an updated cult classic: Mean Girls, the movie musical version of the Broadway show based on the iconic 2004 film. The 2024 iteration stars Reneé Rapp as Regina George and Angourie Rice as Cady Heron. Then the three head to 17th century Edo-era Japan and review Blue Eye Samurai, an animated Netflix series about an ambiguously gendered, half-Japanese, half-white samurai (voiced by Maya Erskine) hell-bent on exacting revenge on the man responsible for their “monstrous” existence. Finally, consider the plight of January, a recent New York Times essay implores. The panel debates the merits of America's least-loved month and whether they agree with the assertion that the first 31 days of the year are the best. In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel discloses what books to read for self-reinvention, including Letters to a Young Poet and Nadira's favorite Toni Morrison work. The conversation is based on Chelsea Leu's piece for The Atlantic, “What to Read If You Want to Reinvent Yourself.” Email us at culturefest@slate.com. Outro music: “Lonely Calling” by Arc De Soleil Endorsements: Nadira: Embracing her tradition of endorsing music favorites, Nadira's been loving Depression Cherry by Beach House, the indie duo's 2015 studio album that's dreamy, surreal, and comforting, and Cynthia Erivo's sensational cover of “Alfie,” performed live at the Kennedy Center Honors for 2023 honoree Dionne Warwick. Dana: At the onset of every year, Dana chooses a mammoth book assignment for herself, and in 2024, that book was Middlemarch by George Eliot. She especially enjoys listening to the audiobook while hiking, which is narrated by the English actress Juliet Stevenson. Steve: Steve learned to Travis pick on the guitar! Thanks to a wonderful YouTube tutorial by Mike's Music Method for the song “Blues Run the Game” by Jackson C. Frank. (And maybe if enough listeners request it, he might perform it for us…) Podcast production by Cameron Drews. Production assistance by Kat Hong. "Beach House" are a dream-pop duo formed in 2004 by singer/keyboardist Victoria Legrand and guitarist/keyboardist Alex Scally. The duo came together over a mutual interest in similar musical tastes, with influences ranging from Neil Young to Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. At the time Victoria was already in a band and recruited Alex to play bass, but the project became frustrating for Victoria since it wasn't going anywhere. It wasn't long before Alex suggested that the pair split from the band and do their own thing. They started writing songs and despite not specifically trying to achieve a "dream-pop" sound, it was a genre that could easily be labelled on the music they were writing together. Their first self-titled 2006 release was the result of just 2 days of recording on a 4 track recorder in Alex's basement studio.Since those early days the duo have gone on to put out 7 studio albums and tour the world.Join Jay and Jesse as they explore the sonic world of "Beach House"."Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg
Funny how it takes a pandemic for us to get a group cast going, but we're glad it finally happened. And what a blast it was too! This episode is just a small snippet of a much lengthier conversation but we feel it's a nice start. Hope you agree & enjoy! Thanks to Tom Bombard, Matt Coxe, Shawn Farmer & Mark Glubke for the awesome insight and great friendship! And finally, we'd be remiss not to mention the passing of John Prine. Tuesday 4/7/20 was indeed a sad day & the world now has a huge void. Rest in peace my friend!Songs sampled:Beach House – “10:37” from Depression Cherry (2015)The Beach Boys – “You Still Believe In Me” from Pet Sounds (1966)Smashing Pumpkins – “Today” from Siamese Dream (1993)The Police – “Tea in Sahara” from Synchronicity (1983)John Prine – “Pretty Good” from John Prine (1971)The Grateful Dead – “Till The Morning Comes” from American Beauty (1970)Spotify Playlist

On the TFT Podcast, Matt and Ryan listen to and discuss “Depression Cherry” and “Thank Your Lucky Stars” by Beach House. Episode 183: Experimental White Noise Collective originally appeared on Overthinking It, the site subjecting the popular culture to a level of scrutiny it probably doesn't deserve.
