Jodie Foster stars as scientist Ellie Arroway, who has dedicated her life to searching for possible intelligent lifeforms outside of Earth and our solar system. An orphan from an early age, her faith in God has wavered since the days of trying to futilely contact her mother in heaven through the radio, replaced by a firm belief in science and facts as the pinnacle of what's true and right. While her faith that we are not alone in the universe is unwavering, as a scientist, she won't rest until she has absolute proof. Scanning the skies for radio waves of intelligent extraterrestrial origin, she and her team at SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) wait diligently for a message. That day finally arrives when they pick up a repeating signal emanating from Vega, a star system 26 light-years away. As the scientists work diligently to try to decode the message, the Earth erupts in a series of science vs. religion debates on what this all means, and who should be the one who represents our interests should we come face to face with the originator of the message.

In this episode, Rob and Ileana are joined by their great friend, Cuco Vega, LEAP Global Partners, Head of Platform, in a very personal conversation, including his unique perspective on innovation, entrepreneurship and his own founder journey, which is a health/wellness journey many entrepreneurs will deeply identify with. Cuco has a well-rounded experience in International Operations, having founded and represented Mexico's Jalisco Government's business and tech promotion office in San Francisco and collaborating with similar programs in Chile, Colombia, Brazil, and Argentina. During the interview, Cuco shares his own entrepreneurial journey, which ended exactly one year prior to the day we recorded this conversation together, including his experience founding Bexi and the valuable lessons he learned along the way. He emphasizes the importance of prioritizing one's health over work and the need to connect with one's co-founder to avoid potential pitfalls. He reflects on the entrepreneurial economies in Mexico, Latin America, and the USA, highlighting both the good and the bad. The conversation tours Cuco's personal life journey, especially his sabbatical the past 12 months, and his professional transition to venture capital and LEAP Partners, where he is committed to helping portfolio companies thrive. He shares the story of LEAP Partners' history and future and offers insights into what it's like to be a bi-national/multi-cultural (Mexican American) with deep roots in both countries. Overall, Cuco's experience, skill set, and ambition make him an incredibly valuable asset for startups and venture capitalists alike. What is it like to watch DeFi summer pass you by while you are building a powerful app-based financial platform to bring financial derivative products to anyone with an idea? For 5 years, Barney Mannerings and the team at Vega Protocol have been building not only a derivatives trading app, but more importantly, a powerful derivatives building platform for any kind of financial application. The potential of the platform to bridge all of finance into DeFi is very compelling. Nothing said on the show should be considered financial advice. This is just the opinions of Brad Nickel and our guests. None of us are financial advisors. Trading, participating, yield farming, liquidity pools, and all of DeFi and crypto is high risk and dangerous. If you decide to participate, do your own research. Never count on the research of others. We don't know what we are talking about and you can lose all your money. A meteor shower that's been around for at least 2700 years is at its best the next couple of nights. It's best viewed between about midnight and dawn. And the Moon sets early, so it won't interfere with the sparklers. The Lyrid shower was first recorded by Chinese astronomers in 687 BC. That's farther back than any other current shower. Over the centuries, showers come and go. They're produced by tiny grains of rock and dirt shed by comets or asteroids. That debris spreads out along the parent body's orbital path. Earth flies through this path every April. The particles ram into our atmosphere at more than a hundred thousand miles per hour. They vaporize, forming the glowing streaks of light known as meteors or shooting stars. But meteor showers don't last forever. The orbits of Earth and the parent comets and asteroids naturally move out of sync. In addition, the comets and asteroids can be pushed around by the gravity of Jupiter and other planets. That changes their paths. So over time, meteor showers come and go. But the Lyrids have stuck around longer than any other shower yet recorded. The Lyrids are named for Lyra, the harp. That's because the meteors all appear to “rain” into the sky from near the constellation's brightest star, Vega. They can zip across any part of the sky, though, so you don't need to look at Lyra to see them. But the view is best after Lyra rises to prominence, around midnight. Planet of the Gods by Robert Moore Williams audiobook. Far, far in the future Earth has achieved real peace and is sending out interstellar expeditions, not to conquer, but to explore. The third such expedition, has made it to the Vega system and discovered to everyone's amazement, not only a solar system but two worlds circling the Vega sun that seem to have atmosphere and water. And apparently intelligent life is there as well because something tries, and almost succeeds, in blasting the expedition ship out of space before it can even get close to either one. Damaged, with 3 dead men aboard, the expedition ship semi-crashes and seeks to hide from this obviously hostile civilization. The three dead members of the crew are buried and four of the local inhabitants pay a friendly call. Then during the second night on this planet, one of the dead bodies knocks on the door and wants to come in. Something very strange is going on here. Learn more about your ad choices. So many nonprofits right now are experiencing challenges with recruitment, burnout, retention, and internal conflict around issues of equity and compensation. Sometimes we don't know where to start. Sometimes we don't have a vision for where to go on these issues. So we've got an important, helpful, and mind-expanding conversation for you today. The brilliant consultant and thought-leader Mala Nagarajan returns to our podcast to share six practices that nonprofits can use to de-link privilege (or, on the other side of the coin, marginalization) from salaries, and reconstruct compensation in a way that is more equitable than it has traditionally been in our sector. These practices are drawn from the Compensation Scale Equity Process and Calculator™ developed by Vega Mala Consulting, of which our guest is Cofounder and Principal. We introduce this resource in the episode, and discuss how nonprofits and other consultants can utilize it. We also discuss what nonprofits can do right away even if they are unable to work with consultants to address equity in their compensation structure. From Fund the People's 8 Practices of Talent-Investing, this episode explores Practice #2: Lead with Respect, Practice #3: Build People-Systems, and Practice #4: Advance Talent Justice. To learn about these, and all 8 Practices of Talent-Investing, listen to Season 4 Episode 1. Go to the Show Notes Page on our website for a transcript of the episode, links to the resources discussed in the episode, guest bio, and more. You can find all the episodes of this podcast plus our blog, toolkit and other resources on our website, fundthepeople.org To hear Mala's previous appearance on the show, listen to Season 3 Episode 9, where she discusses what it means for nonprofits to develop a “compensation philosophy.”
Long before the Twilight books and movies made vampires cool, the motion picture The Lost Boys was a hit. This dark comedy/action drama centers around Michael and Sam Emerson and their experiences with a biker gang who are secretly vampires living in the California beach town of Santa Carla. When Michael is drawn into the influence of the vampires, he must make a choice between becoming a vampire himself or fighting the conversion by killing the head vampire. The name comes from the Peter Pan stories, because much like the lost boys in that tale, vampires never grow up. The cast included Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Corey Haim, and Corey Feldman, and was a box office hit.The film also created a hit with The Lost Boys: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Featuring a number of notable rock stars and groups including INXS, Foreigner's Lou Gramm, Echo & the Bunnymen, and The Who's Roger Daltrey, it spawned multiple singles. The soundtrack contains both original songs and covers, all either alluding to events in the movie or to what could be considered “vampire culture” - lostness, staying up at night, and similar characteristics. The film is credited for changing the perception of vampires to a more youthful and appealing monster. Subsequent adaptations of the vampire genre which would be inspired by the film include movies as diverse as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and the mockumentary film “What We Do in the Shadows.”John Lynch was up all night “staking his claim” on this podcast feature. Cry Little Sister by Gerard McMannSinger-songwriter Gerard McMahon wrote this anthem under the pseudonym Gerard McMann. It would be considered the theme for the movie, and was specifically written for the film. McMann was thinking of a Gotham-like image in which you have to turn to faith in order to escape the doom in the night.Lost in the Shadows by Lou GrammGramm steps out from the shadows of his group Foreigner for this solo effort. The video for this song would feature clips from the film. Fuzzy guitar distortion and harmonica drive this deep cut, and was also written specifically for the movie. Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me by Roger DaltreyThe Elton John hit is covered by Who front man Daltrey, and the allusion to vampires is pretty clear to see. The film ends with morning breaking and the sun coming up, and Daltrey is singing this song as the credits roll.I Still Believe by Tim CappelloThe Call's song is covered by saxophonist Cappello, who also makes a cameo where he is playing the song on the boardwalk. The lyrics are about the 40 days of fasting that Jesus undertook at the start of His ministry, and the reference to belief plays into the theme of faith versus giving into darkness that runs through this film. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Once Upon a Time...Storybook Love by Mark Knopfler (from the motion picture “The Princess Bride”) It would be inconceivable for us to pass up this theme from the Rob Reiner movie which was in the theaters in the fall of 1987. STAFF PICKS:One Slip by Pink Floyd After the departure of Roger Waters, Pink Floyd released the album "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" with only David Gilmour and Nick Mason listed as members. Bruce brings us this staff pick which was co-written by Gilmour and Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music. It is about unintended consequences of impulsive action, in this case an unintended pregnancy. Hourglass by SqueezeRob features the debut single from Squeeze's seventh album, “Babylon and On.” The fast-paced chorus is distinctive and catchy. Songwriters Chris Dilford and Glenn Tilbrook typically wrote the lyrics and music respectively in separate sessions (much like Bernie Taupin and Elton John), but collaborated in the same room on this song. The memorable video is full of surrealism and optical illusions.Luka by Suzanne Vega Wayne takes an uncharacteristically softer and slower pick with singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega's song about child abuse. The song was actually written prior to Vega's first album but didn't make its studio debut until her second album, “Solitude Standing."” The name comes from a boy who played in front of Vega's building and stood apart from the other children. Bad by Michael JacksonLynch brings us the title track to Michael Jackson's massively successful follow-up album to “Thriller.” Jackson wrote this song in an attempt to change his persona to a tough guy. The video was directed by Martin Scorsese, and Prince auditioned for the video. He departed as soon as he read the line, "your butt is mine," and Wesley Snipes would take the role. NOVELTY TRACK:Wipeout by the Fat Boys featuring The Beach BoysWe finish off with this unlikely pairing of beatbox rappers of the 80's and beach music founders of the 60's.

[02:30] 3 Steps to Reprogram Your Mind: Authority, Intensity and Repetition · Authority is when someone comes to you with a message, and you don't have any reference point. · Intensity is when the message has an emotional impact, while the subconscious mind is when you focus on decisions. · Repetition is when you create a dangerous emotional imprint in the subconscious mind. The problem is when this map of reality is not consistent with your goals, then you need to evaluate your beliefs and then start to change them subconsciously. · The inductive mind is the creative mind that imprints information into the subconscious mind and looks for coincidences with the idea. · The inductive mind is the creative mind, and the subconscious mind is the set goal. The reticular activating system is an area in our mind that opens up when we focus on something, allowing us to see things that were not there before. [22:29] The Impact of Food Consumption on Our Conscious and Subconscious Mind. · Social influences on food intake refer to the impact that one or more persons have on the eating behavior of others, either direct (buying food) or indirect (learning from peer's behavior), either conscious (transfer of beliefs) or subconscious. · Observation and food consumption elicit positive affective responses, stimulating food intake. It revealed that the observation and consumption of food activate brain regions related to affective processing. · When we have enough energy, conscious deliberation enables us to make good decisions. The unconscious, on the other hand, seems to operate fine with low energy. [28:35] Fix Your Circadian Rhythm to Lose Weight · A nucleus is an area in the brain behind the eyes responsible for telling the time. When the sun releases blue light, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters, such as melatonin, which is the one that leads to going to sleep. Melatonin is produced during the morning and used later at night. · Light produces endorphins in the eyes, which synchronize the system to get BC and do physical exercise. This is due to the rhythm in cortisol that starts to go up whenever you see the first hours of the morning and the light, which is why we don't use fasting glucose anymore as a valid test. · When exposed to sunlight, you produce the vitamin D necessary to gain muscle mass. However, if you avoid sunlight, for whatever reason, you are more inclined to lose muscle mass due to the missing part of vitamin D. · Vitamin D is an antioxidant. If you consume a lot of ultra-processed carbohydrates, you are using your firehose with carbohydrates instead of getting this vitamin, getting the processes to lower other general inflammation. [40:08] Natural Light vs Artificial Light; How This Influences Weight Loss · When people take sunshine, their anxiety goes down, but when they are anxious, they crave sweets and salty foods. · When they are sleep deprived, they start their day with higher-than-normal glucose levels, and if they exercise, they will have a glucose spike. Insulin can remove the excess glucose and put them back on the level where they start with cravings. · Any lifestyle promoting insulin resistance will worsen matters, and food stimuli are only four to 5% of the brain's ability to change eating patterns. To move forward, starting with the water flow and sleeping at the correct time is important. · Light significantly influences our eating patterns and behavior, with 46% of neurons in our brain being stimulated by light. · The brain is programmed to adapt to longer days during the summertime and shorter days during the wintertime, which means that we need to prepare ourselves and accumulate energy in terms of fat being brought to our system.
