This week, The Filmlosophers are getting local as they delve into a unique film named for and lovingly set in their very own wonderful city: Sacramento! They'll explore how the film captures the essence of their hometown and what makes it so special on the silver screen. But the local love doesn't stop there. In a special, sprawling edition of Conspiracy Theory, the crew embarks on a bizarre and ambitious journey, positing the possibility of a secret expanded cinematic universe that somehow connects the nostalgic coming-of-age story of Stephen King's Stand By Me to a decidedly more bloodsucking final destination, California style. Prepare for some wild leaps of logic and potentially mind-blowing connections! In this episode: Sacramento on Screen: The team will discuss the film's portrayal of their beloved city, analyzing its locations, its atmosphere, and how it contributes to the overall narrative. Expect some personal anecdotes and local insights! Conspiracy Theory: Stand By Me's Shadowy Sequel: The Filmlosophers will meticulously (or perhaps haphazardly) piece together a theory that suggests Stand By Me is the unsuspecting origin point of a much darker, potentially vampiric, cinematic universe. Get ready for a deep dive into seemingly unrelated films and some truly out-there speculation. Join The Filmlosophers for an episode that's a loving tribute to their home city and a descent into the wonderfully weird world of interconnected cinematic universes. It's a journey from the familiar streets of Sacramento to the shadowy corners of a surprising film conspiracy! So pull up a chair, grab your popcorn, and tune in to this week's roadtrip of an episode with The Filmlosophers!

Unfortunately, Dave can't make it this week (we miss you), but we (Evan and Megan) carry on in his stead. First we cover Michael Angarano's dramedy SACREMENTO (2:14), where a free-spirited guy (Angarano) cons his anxiety-ridden best friend (Michael Cera) into taking a road trip to, you guessed it, Sacramento. The movie, which co-stars the vastly underused Maya Erskine and Kristen Stewart, has the occasional poignant moment or funny line but is too scattershot for our taste. Next, we review Christopher Landon's thriller DROP (23:02), which stars Meghann Fahy as a widowed, domestic abuse survivor and mother who is terrorized by anonymous threatening messages on her first date in years. We really dig its central mystery, lead performance, intense atmosphere, and sharp commentary on abuse. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about Martha Coolidge's 1985 comedy REAL GENIUS in honor of the late Val Kilmer!

Her experiences of discrimination as a mixed-race Japanese child have left her cold, bitter and vengeful. Forced by her mother to disguise herself as a boy so as not to be found, she chooses to maintain her disguise into adulthood to pursue her path of revenge more freely. George Takei as Seki, Princess Akemi's male tutor. He sympathizes with Akemi's situation and later takes steps to ensure her freedom. Masi Oka as Ringo, an optimistic, handless male cook who idolizes Mizu. Despite Mizu initially not wanting a companion, she later tolerates Ringo. He proves surprisingly helpful and loyal to Mizu. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Master Eiji, a blind swordsmith who raised Mizu. She is in love with Taigen and resents her father's control over her and seeks a life of independence. Darren Barnet as Taigen, a promising but arrogant male swordsman of humble origins. He is in love with Princess Akemi and harbors a strong resentment towards Mizu, which has lasted since their childhoods, and later seeks revenge after being humiliated in a duel which cuts off his engagement with Akemi. Randall Park as Heiji Shindo, Fowler's nominal jailor and accomplice. Kenneth Branagh as Abijah Fowler, an Irish smuggler who is allied with the Shogun, in secret defiance of Japan's Sakoku closed-door policies. He plans to overthrow the current Shogun and replace him with a leader who will open Japan to outside influence. Stephanie Hsu as Ise, a prostitute. Ming-Na Wen as Madame Kaji, a cunning and savvy madam. Harry Shum Jr. as Takayoshi, the Shogun's second son. Mark Dacascos as Bloodsoaked Chiaki, an assassin and the leader of the Four Fangs gang. Orli Mariko Green as Young Mizu Judah Green as Young Taigen Patrick Gallagher as Lord Daichi, Akemi's father. Ann Harada as Mama, Mizu's unnamed adoptive mother. This week's episode of Indieventure has a bit of a show-and-tell format, since it's been a while since we just checked in with the indie games everyone's been playing in their down time. After our last episode on this February's Steam Next Fest, Rachel has mostly been playing loads more demos! Mech-pilot farming sim Lightyear Frontier has emerged as her most-played Next Fest demo this time around, and might even be poised to find its way onto the best-ever farming sims list of our resident connoisseurs of the genre. She also has a lot of good words for INDIKA, an experimental psychological adventure game examining religious orthodoxy — here's a link to the Polygon article we discuss at this point in the episode. Never one to cruelly leave us without a recommendation for a great indie title we can play in full right now, though, Rachel has also recently checked out text-based horror game Home Safety Hotline. Long-time listeners will know that Rachel isn't always our biggest horror advocate, so rest assured that this one is pretty safe to play for anyone looking for a good creepy story, regardless of your comfort levels with some of the genre's more intense tropes. Noted Valentine's Day sceptic Rebecca has nevertheless been in the mood for romance this month, specifically in video games that let her woo hot monsters. So she's been playing a few rounds of Doomsday Paradise, a Monster Prom-inspired multiplayer card battler that got a bit lost in the shuffle when it first released back in November. She's also revisited two monster dating mash-ups she previously bounced off of, Helltaker and Romancelvania — and quickly DNF'd one all over again while becoming hooked on the other this time around. Liam, meanwhile, has been enjoying two very different roguelikes: early access city builder Roots of Yggdrasil, which sees a band of Vikings attempting to outrun Ragnarok by expanding their civilisation across the Nine Realms with the use of deck-building puzzles; and Go Mecha Ball, the twin stick shooter starring a cat piloting a mech through a pinball machine. You might remember we talked about the latter game before after playing the demo, which is when we first uttered the now-immortal line LIAM LIKE CRONCH. In hyperfixations this week, Rebecca's obsession with the new Wicked movie trailer hasn't quite overtaken her desire to binge as much of the Pokémon anime as possible before Pokémon TV goes offline for good at the end of March. Rachel has recently visited the British Library's Fantasy: Realms of Imagination exhibition, which leads to far too many good book, film, TV, and game recommendations to list in full here. And Liam has finally binned off The O.C. and started watching a TV show he'd actually recommend to others, namely the recent remake of Mr. & Mrs. Smith starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine.

The hosts first begin by exploring an updated cult classic: Mean Girls, the movie musical version of the Broadway show based on the iconic 2004 film. The 2024 iteration stars Reneé Rapp as Regina George and Angourie Rice as Cady Heron. Then the three head to 17th century Edo-era Japan and review Blue Eye Samurai, an animated Netflix series about an ambiguously gendered, half-Japanese, half-white samurai (voiced by Maya Erskine) hell-bent on exacting revenge on the man responsible for their “monstrous” existence. Finally, consider the plight of January, a recent New York Times essay implores. The panel debates the merits of America's least-loved month and whether they agree with the assertion that the first 31 days of the year are the best.  In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel discloses what books to read for self-reinvention, including Letters to a Young Poet and Nadira's favorite Toni Morrison work. The conversation is based on Chelsea Leu's piece for The Atlantic, “What to Read If You Want to Reinvent Yourself.”  Email us at culturefest@slate.com.  Outro music: “Lonely Calling” by Arc De Soleil Endorsements: Nadira: Embracing her tradition of endorsing music favorites, Nadira's been loving Depression Cherry by Beach House, the indie duo's 2015 studio album that's dreamy, surreal, and comforting, and Cynthia Erivo's sensational cover of “Alfie,” performed live at the Kennedy Center Honors for 2023 honoree Dionne Warwick.  Dana: At the onset of every year, Dana chooses a mammoth book assignment for herself, and in 2024, that book was Middlemarch by George Eliot. She especially enjoys listening to the audiobook while hiking, which is narrated by the English actress Juliet Stevenson.  Steve: Steve learned to Travis pick on the guitar! Thanks to a wonderful YouTube tutorial by Mike's Music Method for the song “Blues Run the Game” by Jackson C. Frank. (And maybe if enough listeners request it, he might perform it for us…) Podcast production by Cameron Drews. Production assistance by Kat Hong.  If you enjoy this show, please consider signing up for Slate Plus. Some noted projects that did not garner any noms are Napoleon, Ferrari, Origin, and Swarm. Next year's awards show will premiere two new categories: Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television. This year's Golden Globes will be the first held without the oversight of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which has opened the voting opportunity to a more ethnically and racially diverse voting group made up of 300 journalists from 76 different countries.  The Wall Street Journal reported Angelina Jolie has officially signed on to reprise her role as Maleficent for a third film in the series. Amazon released the first teaser trailer for Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the reboot series of the 2005 film of the same name, which starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. It is not yet clear if Sean Gunn will make an appearance in the upcoming Superman Legacy or if he will appear in different future DC projects. Netflix renewed the animated drama series Blue Eye Samurai for a second season. After a series of concerning reports about Marvel Studios' Blade film, Mahershala Ali addressed the state of the project.  “We're working on it. That's the best I could tell you,” Ali said, speaking to Entertainment Weekly. “I'm really encouraged with the direction of the project. I think we'll be back at it relatively soon.” Godzilla Minus One, now at $14.36 million at the box office, is currently the highest grossing live-action Japanese film in North America. This follows an opening weekend that marked the biggest Stateside debut of a foreign film this year.
