Conditions of the Heart Past civilizations have associated the heart with love as they believed it was (among other things) the centre of emotions. The core of this week's show CONDITIONS OF THE HEART introduces emotive songs that relate to love and the connection with the heart. Some songs make reference to the beating heart Herman Hermits, heart aches the Eagles and broken hearts from the Bee Gees, Jimmy Ruffin Elton John & Kiki Dee, Dionne Warwick and Gene Pitney.

Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Janvier – David Ruffin : My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me)Premier coup d'éclat en solo pour l'ex-chanteur des Temptations. Avril – Jr. Walker & The All Stars : What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)Le saxophoniste au son rauque signe ici un n°1 R&B mémorable. Juin – Lou Rawls : Your Good Thing (Is About To End)Ami d'enfance de Sam Cooke, Rawls réinterprète cette composition d'Isaac Hayes et David Porter. King : The Thrill Is GoneLe "King of the Blues" accède à une renommée internationale grâce à ce blues mineur agrémenté de cordes.

On our political radar this week… Pam Bondi joins Meat Loaf, Joan Rivers, Dennis Rodman, Sinbad, Dionne Warwick, Andrew Dice Clay, Omarosa … and Kristi Noem: “You’re fired!” VIDEO: Bye Bye Bondi (A Tribute) Senator Elissa Slotkin – speaking in Iowa – confirms what we've been saying for weeks: she's open to running for President. Two more special elections this week, two more sharp turns to Democrats: –In Wisconsin, liberal candidate Chris Taylor cruised to an easy victory over her conservative opponent in the state Supreme Court race with 60 percent of the vote, expanding the liberal majority on the court to 5-2. – Georgia, Democrat Shawn Harris lost by about 12 percentage points in the race to replace Marjorie Taylor Green, but he shifted the district 25 points to the left. Trump won the district by 37 percentage points in 2024. A national Republican group said Monday it's dumping $45 million into Michigan's open U.S. Senate race as an initial investment to help presumptive GOP nominee Mike Rogers flip the seat from Democratic control. The operative word is “initial”, meaning even more millions will flow into Michigan Republican sources. Trump is calling on Congress to give Pete Hegseth a staggering $1.7-trillion dollars over the next year. To fund it, Trump wants to cut virtually every other federal program including a 23% cut for NASA even as four astronauts take a first-ever-for-humans trip to the far side of the moon. One item calling for a major increase: White House repairs and renovations. Trump wants to spend 377-million dollars on fixing up the place, an 860 percent increase. Two more major league grifts from Trump: –The Justice Department has settled for roughly $1.2 million a lawsuit from Michael Flynn, the former national security adviser to President Donald Trump who pleaded guilty during Trump’s first term to lying to the FBI about his conversations with a top Russian diplomat and was later pardoned. Bottom line: if Trump likes you, taxpayers will pay you to lie to the FBI. –Semafor is reporting that Trump has directed the State Department to send $1.25 billion – without any Congressional appropriation or authorization to do so – to Trump's Board of Peace. The transfer effectively places the money directly in the hands of Trump, the board’s chairman. Trump and the board’s executives control funding for the Board of Peace — and Trump selects the executive board — and the president will continue to do so even after his second term ends in January 2029. In the race for Governor – John James is ducking still another candidate debate, this one set for the end of the month in vote-rich Oakland County. James has seen his once overwhelming lead for the GOP gubernatorial nomination shrink as septuagenarian Perry “Quality Guru” Johnson dumps millions into an effort to spend his way into office. Governor Whitmer says she will not endorse a candidate for U.S. Senate or Secretary of State. She earlier ruled out an endorsement in the race for the gubernatorial nomination. It's pretty easy for Democrats to be critics of Donald Trump, his policies and his corruption. More important to most people is answering the question: “so what are you going to do?” State House Democrats have answered, releasing their Vision for a Brighter Michigan. We're joined by House Democratic Leader Ranjeev Puri who led development of the plan. The son of Indian immigrants, Leader Puri made history in 2020 as the first person of color to represent his Canton Michigan district and the first Sikh-American in Michigan's legislative history. In his second term he served as majority whip, making him the highest-ranking South Asian in state government nationwide. Remarkably, he is one of two first-generation Indian-Americans in top legislative leadership: Senate Majority Floor Leader Sam Singh is also the son of Indian immigrants. Leader Puri's leadership has earned national recognition, including being named to the Council of State Government's “20 Under 40” Leadership Award Class of 2023 and receiving the MIRS Legislator of the Year Award in 2024.His leadership has earned national recognition, including being named to the Council of State Government's “20 Under 40” Leadership Award Class of 2023 and receiving the MIRS Legislator of the Year Award in 2024. (Jeff) First question! A personal note from producer/co-host Walt Sorg April is Michigan Donate Life month, a recognition of the state's organ donation program. Four years ago I was the recipient of a donated kidney. It changed my life … and probably saved my life. A part of you can live on after death through the simple act of saying “yes, I want to pay it forward.” And you can go a step beyond through a living donation of a kidney, or portion of your liver. My donor was my brother and he's just as healthy today with one kidney as he was before the surgery. The Michigan Organ Donor Registry is a confidential database that documents an individual's decision to become an organ, tissue and eye donor. Joining the registry is simple and secure. Michiganders can add their name online at Michigan.gov/OrganDonation, at any Secretary of State branch office or self-service station, or on your state income tax return. And while you're at it … the donation of blood through the Red Cross is an easy way to save another life. Last spring, donated blood saved my life. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Jennifer's memoir, Becoming Spectacular: The Rhythm of Resilience from The First African-American Rockette, not only tells the story of how she helped establish a transformative era for The Rockettes while inspiring other black dancers, but also recounts her triumphant battle against colorectal cancer in 2018. March is both Women's History Month and Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Becoming Spectacular is available wherever books are sold through Amistad Books, an imprint of HarperCollins. Topics this segment include how Jennifer's faith helped her overcome some of the challenges she faced during her early days with the Rockettes; how she knew, from a young age, that she wanted to perform on stage; and how conquering self-doubt is like peeling away layers of an onion. In our latest tribute, Janet, John, (and Pen) celebrate the life and career of an extremely talented musical genius who wrote some of the most iconic and enduring songs of the 20th century... Burt Baharach! Born in Kansas City, Missouri on May 12th, 1928, Burt seemed to be destined for greatness. Encouraged by his amateur painter and songwriting mother, Burt took up practicing piano, drums, and the cello during his childhood. Using his musical gift, Bacharach continued his education at McGill University in Montreal, Mannes School of Music, and the Musica Academy of the West studying all kinds of music. At the age of 28, he was reccomended to Marlene Dietrich (fun fact: the star our logo is modeled after!) by Peter Matz as she needed an arranger and condutor for her nightclub shows. After becoming her part-time musical director, Baharach and Dietrich toured worldwide together, on and off, until the early 1960s. Eventually this musical genius met Hal David and Dionne Warwick. This trio would make songs that would sell over 12 million copies and have 39 consecutive chart hits. Some of those songs being "Anyone Who Had a Heart" (1963), "Walk On By" (1964), "Message to Michael" (1966), "I Say a Little Prayer" (1967), "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" (1968), "This Girl's in Love with You" (1969) and "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" (1969). Eventually this composer moved towards creating scores for film such Casino Royale (1967) and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), which won them a Academy Award, an Oscar, and a Grammy for best score. In his lifetime, Burt would go onto to creating many wonderful songs, gain many nominations, and win many awards for his absolutely outstanding music.  To learn more about this episode and others, visit the official Cinema Sounds & Secrets website!

Stu Levitan welcomes back to the program Doug Bradley to discuss his new book The Tracks of My Years: A Music-Based Memoir, just out from the good people at Legacy Book Press. And it is exactly what the subtitle promises – Doug recounting the literal soundtrack of his life, putting the seminal events of his first quarter century or so in the context of the music that  accompanied, or symbolized, those events. And since most of the events recounted took place in the sixties and seventies, it's a pretty great 46-song setlist, which you can find on Spotify.  https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2SiTq5A3GboxJ4uTNdMGJ1 Doug spent his early childhood in Philadelphia with his parents and older doo-wop singing brother, in a house filled with music. The family moved to Ohio for two years, then the Pittsburg suburb  of Clairton, where Doug graduated from Thomas Jefferson HS in 1965, doing some party DJ work along the way, thanks to his brother's record collection. He was admitted to Notre Dame but couldn't afford the tuition; as a scholarship student to Bethany College in Bethany WV, Class of '69, he was a Big Man on Campus as two-term chairman of the Social Committee , booking a lot of major pop acts. That's how he came to share a joint with the Jefferson Airplane's Grace Slick and a drink with jazz legend Count Basie, play some pick-up hoops with Smokey Robinson's Miracles, and hold Dionne Warwick's hand on a tragic night in American history. He was drafted into the US Army in March 1970 and fortunately for him aced the job aptitude test and so was made an Army journalist, first domestically and then in 1970-71 at the Army's Vietnam HQ in Long Binh. After his honorable discharge, he finally acceded to the entreaties of his high school mentor – whose interest in Doug may have been more that academic – and he received an MA in English from Washington State University in 1972. He also acceded to the entreaties of his wife, Pam Shannon, and relocated to Madison in 1974, where he was one of the first employees and later president of the community-based service center Vet's House, which helped him work through some of his postwar issues. Pam also got him to appreciate the Grateful Dead, which gives her bonus points. Never a student at the UW, he spent more than 30 years in various communications and marketing positions there, including 15 years as director of public information at UW Extension, where his father-in-law Ted Shannon was a top administrator. He also for many years co-taught with his co-author Prof. Craig Werner a course based on their award-winning book “We Gotta Get Out of this Place: The Soundtrack of the Vietnam War.” Doug later continued the theme, writing Who'll Stop The Rain: Respect, Remembrance and Reconciliation in post-Vietnam America, both books the subject of a BookBeat episode in February 2020. It's a pleasure to welcome back to Madison BookBeat the 2025 recipient of the Vietnam Veterans of America's Excellence in Arts Award, Doug Bradley

Listen to a conversation with the virtuoso multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and bandleader, Ricky Skaggs. Born in Kentucky in 1954, Skaggs has played a central role in shaping modern bluegrass and country music. A child prodigy, he first performed on stage with Bill Monroe at age six, and at age seven he appeared on national television with Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs.  Before turning 18, Skaggs had already performed with many of the greatest legends in bluegrass. At age 15, he and his childhood friend Keith Whitley joined Ralph Stanley's Clinch Mountain Boys. In the 1970s, Skaggs' musicianship helped redefine progressive bluegrass through his work with the Country Gentlemen, J.D. Crowe & the New South, and Emmylou Harris' Hot Band. He launched his solo career in the early 1980s and became a leading figure in the neotraditional country movement. His string of #1 hits — including “Crying My Heart Out Over You,” “Highway 40 Blues,” and “Heartbroke” — made him one of the decade's most influential artists. During this period he earned multiple CMA Awards, including Entertainer of the Year in 1985, as well as several Grammy Awards. In the 1990s, Skaggs returned his focus to bluegrass, forming his acclaimed band Kentucky Thunder. In 2018, Skaggs was inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame—one of the few artists to receive both honors. He is also a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Skaggs has performed and recorded with a wide range of legendary artists across many genres, including Jack White, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Charlie Haden, Bruce Hornsby, Béla Fleck, John Fogerty, and Dionne Warwick, among many others. Across his decades-long career, Ricky Skaggs' contributions as a singer, mandolinist, fiddler, bandleader, and tradition-bearer have secured his legacy as one of the most important figures in American roots music. Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder will present a special Christmas concert at the Brown County Music Center on December 11.

Before there were military consultants on movie sets, there were officers like Jon McBride — servicemen who understood how stories shape public perception. On this Veterans Day episode of Below the Line, we look at how the Navy's storytellers helped connect the worlds of service and cinema. This week, Skid is joined by Jon McBride, a former U.S. Navy officer whose service from 1964 to 1968 led him from the deck of the USS Kitty Hawk to the Navy's Public Affairs Office in Hollywood — bridging two worlds that rarely meet but often influence one another. We explore: Jon's path from Yale graduate to Naval officer during the Vietnam War era, and how chance and persistence steered him toward public affairs Life aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, where he volunteered for the ship's public information role — discovering a talent for storytelling under pressure How a Pentagon connection set Jon on the path to Hollywood, joining the Navy's West Coast Public Affairs Office on Sunset Boulevard The Navy's relationship with the film industry — reviewing scripts, assigning project officers, and shaping depictions of sailors on screen Behind-the-scenes memories from Operation: Entertainment, Yours, Mine and Ours, and an unexpected day serving as Dionne Warwick's “agent” Encounters with Ray Charles, the Blue Angels, and the surreal overlap between show business and service How McBride's later work with the grassroots Beyond War movement reframed his understanding of conflict and communication Episodes like this one reflect a recurring theme for Below the Line — the shared discipline, teamwork, and creative purpose that link filmmaking and military service. Jon's story captures that connection with humor, humility, and a deep sense of how storytelling itself can serve a mission.
