Joy Reid leads this episode of The ReidOut with Raphael Ted Cruz, who apparently made the mistake of telling the truth about January 6th on the anniversary. Next, the Senate could advance the Freedom to Vote Act as early as next week, ahead of a Martin Luther King Day deadline for a vote to change Senate filibuster rules in the face of Republican obstruction. House Majority Whip, Rep. Jim Clyburn, joins Joy to discuss. Then, as new COVID infections are hitting record highs nationwide, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments today challenging two Biden administration vaccine and testing mandates aimed at large employers as well as some health care providers. The two requirements would affect around 100 million workers. Finally, we remember Sidney Poitier, a towering figure who demanded respect both on screen and off, who died today at the age of 94. Award-winning singer, television host, activist and friend of the late Sidney Poitier, Dionne Warwick, joins us as we remember him. All this and more in this edition of The ReidOut on MSNBC.

Darlene Love was just a high school sophomore in Los Angeles when she was discovered out of a gospel choir, and asked to join a burgeoning girl group called The Blossoms, who began recording for Phil Specter. Soon thereafter, other artists like Sam Cooke were attracted to her powerful sound, and sought Darlene on their recordings. With The Blossoms and Bob B. Phil and Jake are joined by singer-songwriter Tim Hause to rank volcanoes and the song “American Pie” by Don McLean on the List of Every Damn Thing.Follow Tim on Instagram (@timbillhause) and Twitter (@timBILLhause). Check out his collaboration with brother Dave Hause on the fantastic new record “Blood Harmony” (which you can also find on Spotify & Apple Music). And see them play live near you! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook). We also have a subreddit!SHOW NOTES: Phil looked up people pronouncing “human” like “yu-man” and apparently it's how people in NYC, Philadelphia and some places in Ireland say it. Phil is from rural California and although he used to live in NYC, he moved there as an adult. This clip features a scientific explanation of how Paul Bunyan and Babe the Big Blue Ox created the Grand Teton mountain range by roughhousing. We discuss a number of volcanic-relevant geographical locations including Mount St. Helens, The Road to Hana, Mount Shasta, Panum Crater, Pompeii, Arenal Volcano and Long Valley Caldera. Dr. Pimple Popper is a dermatologist who makes videos of pimples being popped. Look, the world isn't always that great, this sort of stuff is out there. We briefly discuss a volcano that erupted in the 19th Century, affecting global weather patterns and creating a year without a summer. The eruption in question was that of Mount Tambora in 1815 (the Year Without a Summer was the following year). It's also hypothesized that a similar thing happened in the 6th Century. Joe Vs. the Volcano is a 1990 film by John Patrick Shanley (Moonstruck) starring Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan (in multiple roles). It's a fun movie that lost a lot of money. Phil talks about underwater animals that survive from “geothermal” heat, but the real term is "hydrothermal vent". These animals have a whole little ecosystem that doesn't need sunlight. They live in one of the few truly alien environments on Earth. Jake mentions the use of McLean's song in Black Widow, but we can't remember the name of the character Yelena Belova. “The Day the Music Died” is a reference to Feb. 3, 1959, when Buddy Holly, Richie Valens & Big Bopper died in a plane crash.  Jake mentions the 1969 Altamont Free Concert, which is considered one of the end-markers of the 1960s. He incorrectly refers to the killing of a woman at the concert, when in fact it was an eighteen-year-old man (named Meredith) who was stabbed to death. Three other people also died at the concert. Songs we compare “American Pie” to include “Black Betty” by Ram Jam, “Turn! Turn! Turn!” by The Byrds, “Cats In the Cradle” by Harry Chapin, “You're So Vain” by Carly Simon, “The First Cut is the Deepest” by Rod Stewart, “Night Moves” by Bob Seager, “Mrs. Robinson” by Simon & Garfunkel, “The Saga Begins” by “Weird Al” Yankovic, “Cherry Pie” by Warrant, “Sweet Potato Pie” by Domino, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dionne Warwick and “Roly Poly” by Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. We compare it to a few Billy Joel songs (“We Didn't Start the Fire”, “Piano Man” and “Only the Good Die Young”). There's been an ongoing reassessment of Billy Joel (since about 2009 when this LA times blog defended him). Here's a Vice defense, and here's Jon Gabrus' "High and Mighty" Billy Joel episode. We also discuss Taylor Swift's “All Too Well” and the “American Pie” cover by Madonna. Don McLean's twenty-seven year-old girlfriend is Paris Dylan. She and former NBA player Chris "Birdman" Andersen were both victims of a catfishing scheme a few years ago that's too weird to even explain but here's an honest attempt. Here's the Cocaine & Rhinestones episode on the Louvin Brothers (which talks about blood harmonies). We never say the name of their band, but when we talk about Matt Hock & Dave Walsh we're of course talking about Space Cadet. We had the pleasure of interviewing The Brothers Koren with Daybreaker over Zoom video!!  The Daybreaker community releases ‘Joy Generation' a collaboration with ace songwriters The Brothers Koren!'Joy Generation' is a unique and inspiring song crowd-sourced in real-time during a creative jam session by 350 members of the Daybreaker community. In case you haven't heard, Daybreaker is one of the most popular and innovative organizations in the wellness and dance space, fusing yoga and meditation with next-level dance events in unique spaces around the world. They have toured arenas with Oprah and been featured by The Today Show, New York Times, Mashable, Elle, WSJ, Buzzfeed, and Vice, and partnered with Nike, Samsung, AMEX, and more. They have collaborated on events with artists like Gloria Estefan, Boyz II Men, SOFI TUKKER, Above & Beyond, Dionne Warwick, and more. The never before attempted song-writing method resulted in ‘Joy Generation', a song that recalls the most epic and exuberant moments of Mumford And Sons, MGMT and The Polyphonic Spree, and yet is so much more, expressing the relief and sense of communion that is balm for these times. In March 2020 we began a new experiment hosting dance parties from our living room. We ended up serving over 200K people in 112 countries to dance and invite joy into their homes during the height of the pandemic when spirits needed it the most.We asked our community members to stick around after to write our new Daybreaker anthem with us. 350+ community members stayed to attempt something never done before: to lace together a song while miles apart, expressing the palpable anticipation of a return to IRL. We longed for an anthem that would take us out of the darkness and into a new more hopeful generation. We sat down in front of our little cameras, intent to harmoniously surface verses about the start of a new cultural Renaissance. The Brothers Koren masterfully shepherded us through the process of co-creating the song. Someone would spontaneously unmute themselves and provide a note, then another, and another: ideas. phrases, lyrics floated across the web. We jammed, we cried, we laughed...And then suddenly, we had an anthem, freeing and naming us: The Joy Generation.' We want to hear from you! Long-rumored to be Taylor's ‘loved-and-lost' track about the Hollywood star, the new version lays down some very candid and thorny lyrics. The Ferment Podcast - Conversations About Worship And Transformation

Calvin Rodgers is a Chicago native and drummer who has been credited with revolutionizing the voice of gospel drumming. His parents realized at a very young age that Calvin shared their love for music and an even stronger love for the drums in particular. Both parents worked very hard to invest as much as they could into their son's promising future. Around the age of 9, Calvin began shadowing his father, a well-known gospel musician, and songwriter, as his personal drummer. This afforded Calvin the opportunity of learning from some of gospel music's most prolific songwriters, artists, and musicians. By the time he entered high school, he was traveling with GRAMMY-nominated choir master Ricky Dillard & New Generation. Around the same time, he became a part of the Ravinia Jazz Mentors program, spearheaded by jazz pianist, Ramsey Lewis. Upon graduating high school, Calvin began touring with Lewis and learning his way around the studio. While recording a radio commercial for Rice A Roni, Calvin met R&B crooner, R. Kelly. Kelly invited Calvin to join his band for his upcoming world tour, TP2. Upon completion of that tour, Calvin decided to place his focus on becoming a recording drummer. He also began finding his voice as an arranger and a producer. With over 200 live/studio albums listed to his credit, he has also recorded and toured with artists such as R.Kelly, Ramsey Lewis, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Dionne Warwick, Destiny's Child, Ronald Isley,  Ernie Isley, Avant, Jonathan Butler, Kirk Franklin, Marvin Sapp, Fred Hammond, Yolanda Adams, Israel Houghton, Donald Lawrence, John P. Kee, Tommy Simms, Tamela Mann, and many, many others. Though quite accomplished, Calvin continues to push himself in all areas while making sure to sow into the next generation through mentoring and private lessons.     In this episode of The Ferment, Calvin and Adam talk about the church as a safe space to raise up musicians and the necessity of continuing to expose yourself to new styles and skillsets to become a well-rounded player. Calvin also gives some solid advice about bringing yourself humbly into unfamiliar gig environments so as to be in service to the songs and the intention of those who hired you while also offering what makes you unique.  The conversation touches on investing in upcoming players, staying true to your roots, encouragement for the Vineyard Movement, and Calvin's personal fermentation process. #31 Tess Collins - Singer & Songwriter on Vulnerability, the Gift of Attention, & Music as Healing

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 26, 2021 74:15

My guest this week is Tess Collins - a brilliant singer and songwriter who has most recently been the artist in residence at Carlyle & Co, the exclusive private members club that sits atop The Rosewood Hotel. She grew up on a lumber yard in rural Maine and followed the big city lights all the way to Hong Kong over a decade ago. She has performed all over the globe - everything from Canadian jazz festivals to London Clubs, to the Beijing Olympic Stadium. From 5 Star Hotel Lobbies to partnering with BMW, Chanel and Estee Lauder. She's shared the stage with Ne-Yo, Coco Lee, and opened for the legendary Dionne Warwick. That's all well and good, but to read her accomplishments from the page does nothing to prepare you for the force of nature that is Tess Collins. To see and hear her perform live, on stage, is really the only way to experience the full extent of her magic. There are singers, and then there are artists. Tess belongs firmly in the latter category. My goal for this conversation was to capture a small piece of that magic through the spoken word. I hope that I've succeeded. My biggest takeaways from this chat with Tess? The importance of compassion, connection, and confirmation (if it were needed) that all great art is born from a place of sensitivity and vulnerability.  Our biggest superpower lies right next to our deepest wound. This episode is also very special because it is book-ended by a sneak preview of her upcoming single which has not yet been released. The single is out soon and is called “Sober”. James Lee Stanley is chicken soup for my pandemic weary soul. I'm talking Grandma Katz's soup, the most flavorful, soothing, healing, and delicious. I was having a kinda funky day, an hour and a half in James' good company… hearing his stories, listening and watching him play, was just what the doctor ordered. There's a reason this man has opened for everyone from Bonnie Raitt, Art Garfunkle, Bill Cosby (before we knew), Robin Williams, Dionne Warwick, and Robin Trower, to name just some. His 50+ years friendship and musical partnership with Peter Tork was covered from start to bottom when Peter was felled by rare cancer under his tongue. Shockingly, James survived his own bout of tongue cancer months later, when his beloved wife Evelina suggested an endoscopy, without cause. James recounted the discovery, cause, treatment, and his miraculous, speedy recovery to health, singing at a gig a mere few months post-surgery. He detailed the diet to boost his immune system and, from which he lost 35 pounds, and has kept it off for two years. That alone makes this worth the listen. But there's so much more from this man who opened for Steven Wright for three years at the height of his fame, great story there, has released 35 albums, so many stories there, wrote a musical, appeared on Star Trek Deep Space 9 for five years, we didn't even get to that. James treated us to a haunting new one, Heart in Amber, nothing like hearing the origin of a song, Moonlight Ride, from his All Wood And Doors, and a Stanley classic, When Love Comes Knocking Around, which I can't stop singing. Happens every time I hear it. We talked about his upcoming album, All Wood And Led with Dan Navarro, and the Gary J. Katz (who made docs on Badfinger, Humble Pie, Steve Marriott, Manassas) documentary, The Extraordinary Journey of James Lee Stanley, making festival rounds currently and soon to drop. The man could always play, sing and entertain the crap out of us, he's looking and sounding better than ever. Looks like the year and half forced hiatus served in its fashion. I feel so damn good in the wake of this time with James. Two thumbs and all other digits way up. A treasured friend and a gem of an artist, you can find all of James' music at JamesLeeStanley.com - I for one, after hearing him again want more, more, more. Unfortunately, when some use the term "science", they use it to silence opposing views. What they're really doing is shutting down the best way to find truth.
