Note: This episode contains strong language. Easily the hardest part of turning something like our live event celebrating the chemistry between Burt Bacharach and Dionne Warwick (and lyricist Hal David) into a radio show is figuring out what NOT to include. Onstage at Watkinson School in Hartford, we went nearly 80 minutes. The finished radio version runs just 50 minutes. So we thought we’d present to you here separately some of that excised half hour. This podcast extra includes four full song performances that didn’t make it into the radio show plus some odds and ends from rehearsals at soundcheck that we particularly enjoyed. This week, the team takes on one of the biggest cinematic phenomena of the early '90s: The Bodyguard (1992). A film that smashed box office records, made slow dancing cool again, and somehow convinced us that a love story between a moody security expert and a petulant pop diva was cinema gold. On paper, this had it all: the biggest male movie star in the world, Kevin Costner and the most powerful voice on the planet, Whitney Houston, in her film debut. But does that combo equal instant classic, or is it just a glittery dumpster fire covered in hit singles?Whitey dives headfirst into the spectacle with a hard truth: this movie takes itself way too seriously. We're talking Oscar-level intensity… for what is essentially a Lifetime movie with a better budget. Of course, there's reverence for Costner—because who doesn't love a bit of 1990s mullet-lite Kev, fresh off Robin Hood, JFK, and Dances with Wolves? But even the biggest Costner fans on the panel can't deny that Frank Farmer spends the entire film doing his best impression of an emotionally constipated mannequin.Meanwhile, G-Man marvels at the soundtrack that saved the film from mediocrity. From “I Have Nothing” to the megaton that is “I Will Always Love You,” Houston's vocals are nothing short of breathtaking—and in the end, her voice gives the film its emotional punch. Damo finds himself emotionally moved by the final scene, where the music hits and we remember just how incredible Whitney was. Unfortunately, her performance as Rachel Marron doesn't land quite as well with the crew. Plot holes? Yep, we got ‘em. From inexplicable security failures (three guards for the world's biggest star?) to the mind-boggling moment where a would-be assassin uses a sniper rifle in a room full of Hollywood elites, the film is more Swiss cheese than suspense thriller. Not to mention the infamous scarf-on-the-sword scene, which leads the team to ponder whether a katana counts as foreplay and why no one, ever, draws a curtain in this movie. But The Bodyguard (1992) isn't without its joys. There's the epic needle drops, a lakeside cabin that Damo would happily disappear to forever, and a cast of cartoonishly awful background characters that you're almost rooting for the stalker. The guys also take a detour through Costner's post-Bodyguard career trajectory, which includes Waterworld, The Postman, and the underrated Draft Day.G-Man delivers his signature deep-dive into cast trivia, highlighting everything from Whitney's early gospel roots to her connection with Dionne Warwick, and even a surprise one-degree link to Kurt Russell via the late great Bill Cobbs. There's a healthy debate about whether The Bodyguard was a real movie or just a high-gloss showcase for a chart-topping soundtrack, and somehow, they still manage to rope in Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style, Inspector Gadget, and the concept of "vabbing" (yep, it's a thing now).Of course, no episode is complete without the Born to Watch signature segments. The boys dish up their Good, the Bad, and the Ugly—from the iconic knife throw scene and amazing set design, to the complete lack of chemistry between the leads and questionable career choices made by everyone involved. Gage Roads supplies the brews, and Johnny Bull returns with a zinger straight outta Aliens. Oh, and Work Experience Kid cops some heat for trying to bring up brassieres in the Snob's Report. Rookie move. So, was The Bodyguard (1992) a misunderstood masterpiece, or a pop-cultural relic best left in the '90s CD rack? There's only one way to find out. Plug in, turn up the volume, and get ready for the most musically dramatic episode Born to Watch has ever done.

The Spinners' story is one of perseverance, evolution, and timeless music that continues to resonate with fans of Motown, Philly Soul, funk, and classic R&B. Their smooth harmonies, intricate vocal arrangements, and signature choreography have made them one of the most enduring groups in soul music history. From their early days in Detroit with Motown to their meteoric rise with Atlantic Records, The Spinners are true legends of the genre.Formed in the '50s in Michigan, The Spinners came together as a vocal group determined to make their mark in the burgeoning R&B scene. They found themselves signed to Motown Records in the '60s, a label that was home to acts like The Temptations, The Supremes, and Marvin Gaye. But The Spinners never quite achieved the same success as their labelmates during their time there. They struggled to break through in a roster filled with some of the biggest names in soul music.Their fate changed in the early '70s when they made a decision that would define their career. Leaving Motown, the band joined Atlantic, under the guidance of producer Thom Bell. With Bell at the helm, The Spinners recorded a string of hits that defined an era. Songs like I'll Be Around, Could It Be I'm Falling in Love, One of a Kind (Love Affair), Mighty Love, and Then Came You—their duet with Dionne Warwick—all became massive hits. Their run of success continued throughout the '70s, with classic tracks like Games People Play and Rubberband Man. The group became known not only for their vocal prowess but also for their stage presence. Their synchronized dance moves and sharp suits made them one of the most exciting live acts of the era.As time passed, The Spinners underwent several lineup changes. They continued to tour and perform, keeping their music fresh for new generations of fans. Even as the music industry evolved, The Spinners remained a staple of classic soul, their songs continuing to be played on R&B stations and featured in movies, commercials, and TV shows.Amidst the transitions, one of the most significant moments in the group's more recent history was the inclusion of Jessie Peck. A longtime fan of The Spinners, Jessie grew up admiring them as a child, wishing one day to be a part of their act. Before joining the group, Jessie had already made a name for himself as a talented vocalist with a deep appreciation for classic R&B. His rich baritone and smooth delivery made him a natural fit for The Spinners' sound, and when the opportunity arose for him to join the legendary group, it was a dream come true.Jessie's arrival injected new energy into the group while maintaining the signature style that fans had come to love. He stepped into his role with the utmost respect for the foundation laid by those who came before him. His passion for the music, combined with his natural talent and stage presence, made him a seamless addition to the lineup. As a performer, Jessie embraced The Spinners' commitment to delivering not just great music but an unforgettable show. The Spinners have always been about more than just singing—they're entertainers in the truest sense, combining tight harmonies with choreographed moves that keep audiences engaged from the first note to the last.Even after decades in the industry, The Spinners continue to thrive, bringing their soulful sound to audiences around the world. Their influence can be heard in countless artists who followed in their footsteps, and their ability to bridge generations of music lovers is a testament to the timeless nature of their songs. Jessie Peck's presence in the group is a reflection of their commitment to excellence, ensuring that The Spinners remain not just a nostalgic act but a living, breathing force in the world of soul, R&B, and classic funk.Jessie Peck joins us this week to share some amazing stories about The Spinners.#classichits #r&b #musiclegends

Greetings, my spectral spectators!
Leslie Uggams' long-standing place in American pop culture matches that of any pop diva of similar longevity, going back all the way to her days as a child star on 1950s television variety and game shows. She won a Tony in 1967 for her performance in the musical Hallelujah, Baby, and she was the first African American woman to host her own variety show, the short-lived Leslie Uggams Show, which I, as a little homo-in-training, soaked up like a sponge! These days she's also celebrated for her participation in the Deadpool franchise and other high-profile projects. Today I've decided to shed some light on her status as a pop icon in the late 1960s, focusing on her three albums for Atlantic Records and subsequent releases in the 1970s on Dionne Warwick's Sonday Records label and Motown Records, in other words, the period from just before Hallelujah, Baby leading up to just before her starring role in the earth-shattering 1977 miniseries Roots. Uggams reveals herself to be a versatile entertainer of the first order, performing songs by everyone from Holland-Dozier-Holland to Burt Bacharach, from Jimmy Webb to Waylon Jennings, from Jon Hendricks to Jackie DeShannon, including the very first official commercial release of the Leiber and Stoller song “Is That All There Is,” a year before it became a massive hit for Peggy Lee. The episode ends with a pair of protest songs recorded in 1968. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. Just before Christmas 1984, Harry Belafonte wanted US artists (and especially black artists) to create a charity album to benefit starving people in Africa as the Do They Know It's Christmas single by the days most popular UK bands was a huge success. He teamed up with manager to the stars Ken Kragen to put together the team that would write and record the lead single. Immediately, Ken enlisted his client, Lionel Richie, to write the song. Lionel and Ken knew they'd need all-star producer Quincy Jones to put it all together. Quincy thought it would be a good idea to get the biggest pop star in the world, Michael Jackson, involved and things snowballed from there as Ken brought on legends like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Diana Ross, Kenny Rogers, Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and artists that were popular at the time like Billy Joel, Kim Carnes, Cindy Lauper, Huey Lewis and more. But how would they get all that talent in one room at one time? Ken devised the idea that so many would be in LA for the American Music Awards on January 28, 1985 so that would be the ideal time. But that was 5 weeks away!!! So Ken went about finding the venue and Lionel and Michael worked on the song. It was all kept very hush hush and even the artists didn't know where they were going after the AMAs until they were on the way. And to make the night even more stressful for Lionel, he was hosting the AMAs and was performing twice (not to mention collecting 6 awards that night). The documentary was a fascinating glimpse into one special night where all egos were put aside in order to record a special song for a worthy cause.
