Girls and Social Media With more girls than ever reporting that they feel sad or hopeless, The Gospel Coalition's Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra talks with Martha Manikas-Foster about social media's impact on girls. They also talk about the precautions adults might put in place before approaching social media as a mission field. More girls than ever feel sad or hopeless. Social media may be the reason why. “In 2009, we know about a third of American high school girls had persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness,” reports Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra, senior writer and faith-and-work editor for The Gospel Coalition. “But by last year, so this is about 10 years later, it was up to 57 percent. Which is the highest recorded level of teenage sadness ever.” Zylstra observes that the increase in sadness tracks with the rise of smartphones and social media. Smartphones make it possible to check on your internet friends more often than when you had to wait until you opened your laptop to get connected. How we spend our time makes its mark on us, and girls are averaging five hours a day on social media. During those hours girls are comparing themselves with others--often people they don't know in person—and they repeatedly feel that they fall short. Disembodied online relationships impact us differently from in-person friendships, Zylstra says, in part because when you walk alongside a friend, you see them on both their good days and bad days. Online you see only the best snapshots of a person's day. “And if you have 500 friends,” Zylstra says, “every day somebody's having a good day somewhere. But you're constantly feeling like, ‘My day never measures up.'” Listen in on our 18-minute conversation about the impact this is having. You'll also hear Zylstra's suggestions for how adults who feel called to on-line ministry might wisely approach social media as a mission field. Back for a brand new episode of The Scoop, Darren 'Doogie' Wolfson shares his latest notes on the Twins, Wolves, Gophers, and Vikings before getting into interviews. Guests on this show include Super Bowl champion and former Washington QB Joe Theismann, Vikings TE TJ Hockenson, St. Thomas football coach Glenn Caruso, Lions TE Shane Zylstra, Twins CEO & President Dave St. Peter along with Twins players Byron Buxton, Joe Ryan, Jose Miranda, Louie Varland, and Luis Arraez.
Not the most exciting week of Waivers, but Davis Mattek covers QB/RB/WR/TE options on the wire in Week 9. NOTE: Audio issues again, will be switching recording programs moving forward. As such, transcribed notes are provided QB Justin Fields - If he is somehow still out there in your league, he is a top-8 FF QB rest of season Case Keenum - If Case gets installed as the QB with Josh Allen suffering a UCL injury, he steps into one of the fantasy-friendliest offenses in football. He has shown in a similar circumstance in Minnesota that he can be baseline-competent for fantasy football. He would likely project most weeks for around 18 FPPG. Andy Dalton and Daniel Jones are the other available streaming options. At this stage of the season, it also might be time to start thinking about adding DeShaun Watson as he returns from his suspension soon. RB Jerick McKinnon - Actually available in more leagues than you would think, even in deeper formats and the Main Event on the FFPC. The Chiefs totally gave up running the ball against the Titans. Pacheco/CEH both averaged 1.0 yards per carry and looked dead on their feet. McKinnon always made the most sense for this KC team and it is looking like they are transitioning to him as the lead back as the games get more important. Chuba Hubbard - Decent chance he has been dropped in some leagues as he has been OUT for the last 2 weeks. The Panthers are not using Dont'a Foreman on 3rd downs at all, with Spencer Brown and Raheem Blackshear filling that role the last few weeks. 5-10% should be fine for him where he has been dropped. Isaiah Spiller - With Josh Kelley on the IR, Spiller played more snaps than Sony Michel against the Falcons. Spiller was a really highly touted player coming out of Texas A&M but performed very poorly at the scouting combine. My guess is that he is one of those guys who will look good when he gets into games. He could be a potential league-winner with an Ekeler injury. He still may have a strong role if he fully dispatches Michel; worth up to 15% in leagues where he has been dropped. Zack Moss - He was a healthy scratch in his first game as a Colt but there are some strong signals here. Deon Jackson, Phillip Lindsay and Jordan Wilkins did nothing in the worst offensive game of the year against the Patriots. It would not be surprising to see Deon Jackson in Nyheim Hines' role and then Moss installed in a JT-esque role (operating under the assumption that JT is unlikely to play this season). WR Terrace Marshall - Marshall has 5 EZ targets the last 2 weeks and really that is it. He gets a great matchup this week against the Falcons and has been a near every-down player for the Panthers since they shipped Robbie Anderson off to the Cardinals. I would not go higher than 10% on him. Odell Beckham - Beckham is getting closer to signing per multiple reports and one would assume that he is going to sign with a good-to-great team that has a chance to win a Super Bowl. The Ravens would be a low-end outcome but the Bills and Chiefs remain legit options. Even the Dallas Cowboys desperately need a 3rd WR. Would obviously only add him on teams that are looking like strong league contenders. Donovan Peoples-Jones - One week streamer potentially against the Dolphins as a 90% route participation WR going up against the Dolphins. There are some starting FF WRs who are on bye this week, and I can see DPJ projecting as a guy who makes it in as a WR4 on some RB-heavy rosters. Isiah McKenzie - I am not sure why this happened but coming out of the bye, McKenzie has iced Khalil Shakir as the 3rd WR for the Bills. He wasn't targeted much against the Jets but was out there for a season-high snap share. Given that Gabe Davis has not had more than 4 catches in any game, the Bills do need to get a little more out of their slot WR. Robbie Anderson - Clear 3rd WR and deep threat for the Cardinals. I've had him sitting on a bunch of benches since he got traded to AZ and will be adding him more after a 90% snap share week against Seattle. Kalif Raymond - 95% snap share but down target game against the Packers. If the Lions defense gets them into more shootouts, I would expect Raymond to be a pretty profitable streamer. Samori Toure - A UDFA who is going to have to play for the Packers with Romeo Doubs out for several weeks, Christian Watson potentially concussed, Randall Cobb on IR and Sammy Watkins conservatively playing at 290 pounds. 4 targets in back to back games. 1% bid. TE Greg Dulcich/Cade Otton - If they got dropped, pick them up. That simple, they are top-12 TEs. Cole Kmet - 3 TDs the last two weeks and has played over 90% of snaps in every game this year for the Bears. Not a locked on starter but he is a way to attach yourself to the Justin Fields ascendance. Foster Moreau - Continued 95% snap share with Darren Waller out. I started him in a few FFPC leagues last week and would do it again if Waller continues to be out. Tanner Hudson - The TE who might play the most snaps of any TE who is widely available in fantasy football; had over 80% route participation in the first Giants game without Daniel Bellinger. Low floor/low ceiling option. A note on the Lions tight ends - All 3 of Wright, Zylstra and Mitchell played and none of them were targeted more than twice despite Zylstra and Mitchell scoring TDs. Thought maybe Wright would be a low-end streamer but he is clearly not.

In today's world, social media is deeply embedded in our daily lives. But should it be? I am so excited to be joined by Sarah Zylstra for this illuminating conversation around social media usage, habits, and consequences, specifically for athletes. Sarah asks some challenging questions that I hope you'll take some time to answer for yourself. Her new book, Social Sanity in an Insta World, is a guide to help you do just that. I have been personally impacted by Sarah's insight on this topic, and I hope this episode encourages you to evaluate (and possibly eliminate) your relationship with social media. In this episode you will hear: Red flags of social media you should pay attention to How social media is affecting athletes specifically Ways to leave social media for good (yes, it is possible!) In a recent article at The Gospel Coalition, writer Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra tells the story of a Christian family with a teen who once identified as transgender. “I started to associate womanhood with being sexualized,” says Grace, now age 16. Peers, teachers, counselors, and—above all—social media circles guided Grace towards a strong case of rapid onset gender dysphoria. She stopped wearing feminine clothing and asked her parents to refer to her as “they/them.” This is the moment that many parents fear. These parents prayed hard, stayed true, and remembered the long game. “They built their relationships with her,” writes Zylstra. “They drew boundaries around how she could express herself. They took her to counseling and to church.” Eventually, Grace began to feel comfortable as a girl again. In a culture where nearly 1 in 5 of Gen Z calls themselves “LGBT,” the story of Grace and her family is worth reading. At a time when so many are tempted to despair, it does not offer a quick fix. But it does offer truth, love, and hope.
