How would you like to get your hands on that creation? And for those of you who aren't besieged with Wicked in your feed, this may be the first time you are learning about Frances' process working with Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, John Chu on this epic adventure of WICKED and WICKED:FOR GOOD. Don't Kill the Messenger with movie research expert Kevin Goetz
Send Kevin a Text MessageIn this episode of Don't Kill the Messenger, host Kevin Goetz welcomes Jon M. Chu on the opening day of Wicked: For Good, a film that generated exciting audience reactions during test screenings. From his family's Chinese restaurant in Silicon Valley to directing one of the most anticipated musicals in Hollywood history, Jon's journey reveals how generosity, gratitude, and respect for storytelling shape extraordinary movies. The Most Explosive Audience Reaction Ever (00:29): Kevin describes how Wicked test screenings produced reactions unlike anything he'd experienced. The Risk of Adapting a Broadway Phenomenon (03:57): After 20 years of failed attempts by other directors, Jon wasn't sure he should take on Wicked. But Elphaba's lyrics, "something has changed within me," convinced him to take on the project. The House of Stories: A Silicon Valley Restaurant (18:40): Jon's family restaurant, Chef Chu's (now 56 years strong), became "a house of stories,” an intersection where customers shared beginnings and endings while Silicon Valley engineers dreamed of the future. The Spielberg Meeting and the Costume Chest Pitch (29:52): After creating a musical short, Steven Spielberg saw it and invited Jon to Dreamworks. Jon describes the hilarious pitch meeting that included a trunk full of costumes.Finding Cynthia and Ariana: No Chemistry Read Required (41:15): When casting Wicked, Jon was guided by the saying, "It's about the girls, stupid." Cynthia Erivo brought vulnerability and dignity to Elphaba, while Ariana Grande proved to be the perfect choice. The Fiyero Tree Nest: What Cinema Is All About (46:10): Jon breaks down every intentional choice in the intimate scene between Elphaba and Fiyero. What's Next: From Dr. Seuss to Britney Spears (52:59): Jon's upcoming slate includes Oh, The Places You'll Go!,Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the Britney Spears biopic based on The Woman in Me, and a live-action Hot Wheels movie. The Sacred Space of Movie Theaters (56:11): Jon delivers a passionate defense of theatrical exhibition, "You have to put your phone down, sit in the dark with strangers and live through someone else's eyes for two hours.”Jon Chu shows how great art can come from a foundation of gratitude, generosity received and given forward, and unwavering commitment to stories that challenge us to become who we want to be. This week's Tarp Find is about an incredible moment of kindness at the Grammy Awards between Taylor Swift & Wicked star Cynthia Erivo. What happens when real friendship shows up on camera; bold, protective, and tender, and the internet can't decide whether to cheer or sneer? We take you inside the public bond between Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, from warm interview moments to a tense red carpet scare that sparked headlines, memes, and a tidal wave of comments. The story becomes a mirror: a culture that says women should support each other, then punishes the sight of that support when it looks unapologetically close. We unpack why visible affection between women draws suspicion, how maturity gets confused with emotional distance, and why a split-second act of protection can expose our own unmet needs. Along the way, we explore the difference between romantic safety and the distinct strength of platonic loyalty, the kind of ally who moves first without waiting for permission. You'll hear a candid look at hypocrisy online, the role of envy in our reactions, and the power of modeling solidarity in public without turning it into performance. If you've ever longed for a friend who reads your mind, finishes your thought, or stands in front when life surges, this conversation offers both language and a roadmap. We challenge the snark economy, argue for tenderness as a form of courage, and invite you to practice the gestures you want to receive: the check-in text, the steady hand, the quick defense when it counts. Listen, reflect, and share this one with the person who would leap for you, or the person you'd leap for. If the message resonates, follow the show, leave a rating, and tell me: what does real support look like in your life? *Watch the video of this podcast on Youtube

We got into everything — from her journey with content to the weird energy between Ariana Grande & Cynthia Erivo on their press tour.We also talked about the sudden urge for Aussie women (especially our Black girlies) in their late 20s to pack up and move overseas, whether we should start being a little mean to men, and why pulling up to someone's house unannounced needs to end. Last year's Wicked: Part One, despite its shortcomings, was bolstered by infectious energy, powerhouse performances, and bop-worthy songs. Can this year's followup, For Good, pull off the same magic trick again? Once again, our resident Wicked fan faces off with the two laymen of the podcast to review the second half of the hit adaptation.
Cynthia Erivo was honored at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival with the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film, recognizing her impact on the industry. On the red carpet, KCSB's Emerson Good spoke with both Erivo and the director of Wicked, Jon M. Chu.
Nominations for the Golden Globe Awards 2026 are in - effectively kicking off a film awards season that will last until the Oscars in March. Leonardo DiCaprio film One Battle After Another has swept up with nine nominations, whilst Netflix drama series Adolescence and Hamnet actor Paul Mescal are among the other nominees.Other Hollywood heavyweights recognised for their work include Timothee Chalamet for Marty Supreme, Emma Stone for Bugonia, and George Clooney for Jay Kelly. But there was shock, as Wicked: For Good was snubbed from the category of Best Picture - Musical or Comedy - though leads Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo made history by being the first two actors from the same film to be consecutively nominated for their respective roles as Glinda and Elphaba. The Standard's Commissioning Editor and Culture Writer Vicky Jessop is here with the latest. EP.607The boys are back from their so called “holiday break,” and surprise, surprise chaos didn't take a vacation. Rumors are flying faster than private jets to Little St. James: whispers that Hillary and Bill Clinton might be splitting up. Apparently, Hillary's not thrilled to see Bill's name pop up in the Epstein files who knew?Meanwhile, over in La-La Land, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are… something. Friends? Lovers? A PR dream team? Nobody knows, but everyone's pretending they do. One thing's for sure Ariana's looking startlingly fragile, and the internet's collectively pretending not to notice. And speaking of transformations Jelly Roll's slimmed down faster than America's attention span. But now the question is: who's his audience? The tattooed, beer can crushing outlaws who saw themselves in him… or a newer, cleaner crowd that's into “reformed bad boy chic”? Losing weight might be the healthiest thing he's ever done career wise, maybe not.All that and more as the boys return in truly classic form: unfiltered, unbothered, and ready to offend anyone with Wi-Fi. Listen at your own risk.

Today on Script Apart, we're off to see the wizards – the wonderful storytelling wizards, that is, behind the first ever musical we've covered on the show. In the early ‘00s, New York-born-and-raised playwright Winnie Holzman was, like the rest of the city, still reeling from the September 11 attacks that claimed 2977 lives. It wasn't just the attacks themselves that haunted her – it was the division they wrought too. Racial minorities – America's Muslim population, specifically – were scapegoated and othered. All of a sudden, a war stood on the horizon. And so, Winnie got to work with composer Stephen Schwartz on a musical that would subtly grapple with the skyrocketing racism of that moment. Soon, something Wicked was to come our way.Inspired by a book of the same name by author Gregory Maguire, Winnie and Stephen's Broadway extravaganza took one of the defining stories in cinematic history – the Wizard Of Oz – and invited audiences to look at it a little differently. What if the so-called Wicked Witch Of The West in that film – all green skin and shrill cackle – wasn't actually the terroristic threat that Dorothy and viewers thought her to be? What if there was a more tender truth to this woman, who lest we forget, in that 1939 movie, was just trying to retrieve the ruby slippers worn by her dead sister, crushed by Dorothy's house when it's transported via tornado to Oz? Chances are you know what happened next. Forbes Magazine estimates that 65m people have seen Wicked since it hit Broadway in 2003, quickly expanding around the globe. It's the fourth longest-running play in Broadway history. And now, it's a blockbuster smash too. Last year, Winnie's screen adaptation of the musical, written with my other guest today, Dana Fox, of Cruella fame, began its emerald takeover of movie theatres. That first film, simply titled Wicked and covering the first half of the stage play, was a smash. Now, Wicked For Good is here, bringing this tale to the end of its yellow brick road, and Winnie and Dana are full of emotion and reflection. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, they tell me about the strangeness of this movie arriving in this particular political moment. I don't know about you guys at home, but the sight in Wicked and Wicked For Good of marginalised groups – munchkins and animals – rounded up and forced from their homes in a year of ICE raids and anti-immigrant anger, struck a really heartbreaking chord for me. It's not all politics, though, I promise! We also get into the prisons of perception that Elphaba and Glinda, played by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande respectively, both exist in and have to break free of in this story. And you'll also hear the pair's reflections on the huge differences between this story about the Gregory Maguire original, which saw Elphaba join an underground terror cell. Apparently in movie history, there are only 2 actors to have 3 Number 1 films in a year. This sounds crazy! So Movie Mike investigates to find out if that is actually true and breaks down what actors he thinks have had the single best year run in movies from his research. In the Movie Review, Mike talks about Wicked: For Good. Now demonized as the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba lives in exile in the Ozian forest, while Glinda resides at the palace in Emerald City, reveling in the perks of fame and popularity. As an angry mob rises against the Wicked Witch, she'll need to reunite with Glinda to transform herself, and all of Oz, for good. Mike shares why he felt it could have been one movie, Arianda Grande and Cynthia Erivo difference in performances, how it compares to the Broadway musical but why he loves what the franchise has done for the movie theater experience. In the Trailer Park, Mike talks about Super Mario Galaxy starring Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy. He shares why he thinks about the new voice actors joining the cast and where it ranks on his list of most anticipated video game movies and his favorite Super Mario games. New Episodes Every Monday! Something Wicked this way comes as Dana, Steve, and guest host Dan Kois gather round their proverbial cauldrons for an all-movie edition of the Gabfest. First up, of course, is Wicked: For Good the green/pink-hued conclusion to the alternative history of Oz. This sequel, which reunites Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as witch besties/mortal enemies, goes to surprisingly dark places. Next, they discuss Train Dreams, the contemplative and grandeur-filled adaptation of Denis Johnson's novella directed by Clint Bentley. Finally, they sit down for a long, rich conversation between friends in Peter Hujar's Day, a chamber piece by Ira Sachs about art, friendship, and how much can happen in a single day. In our bonus episode for Slate Plus subscribers, Julia hops on the call to continue our recap series of Pluribus. The hosts get into all the details of Pluribus episode 5 “Got Milk.” We're still taking submissions for our call-in show. Wicked was a smash hit that earned Oscar nominations for Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo–but that was only the first half of the story. Wicked: For Good has more songs, more magic, more extravagant production design, and more belting. But can it match the impact and live up to the hype of the first film?Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopcultureLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
