'Mean Girls' with Steven Shapiro & Nancy Shapiro Rapport

Better Learning Podcast

Mean Girls, directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey, is a cult classic teen comedy based on Rosalind Wiseman's book Queen Bees and Wannabes. The film humorously yet accurately portrays the harsh realities of high school social dynamics, focusing on cliques, peer pressure, and the impact of popularity on self-identity. The story follows Cady Heron, a homeschooled girl navigating the cutthroat social hierarchy of public high school life after moving from Africa. As she infiltrates "The Plastics," the school's most popular clique, Cady faces a moral dilemma that tests her values, self-image, and relationships. Though often comedic, the movie sheds light on serious issues like bullying, conformity, and the challenges of adolescence. In this episode, Kevin Stoller, Nancy Shapiro Rapport, and Steven Shapiro discuss the movie through the lens of parenting and education. They explore the challenges faced by kids and parents in today's society, particularly focusing on the mental health crisis and the breakdown of family structures. The conversation delves into character analyses, the impact of school environments, and the importance of emotional health in raising children.   Takeaways: Consistent, intentional conversations about values and behavior are essential for raising resilient, emotionally healthy children. Small, deliberate actions can lead to significant, long-term results. A strong family culture, built on open communication and shared values, can help children navigate social pressures and define their identity. Parents need to engage in ongoing discussions about kindness, respect, and self-worth. Technology has fundamentally changed how teens communicate and form relationships. Setting boundaries around device use and fostering in-person connections can help counteract the isolating effects of screen time. Adolescence is a time of self-discovery, and social interactions can be intense and confusing. Understanding the pressures teens face helps parents provide better support. Schools can support parents by reinforcing positive behaviors and values, while communities can provide a support network for parents navigating the challenges of raising children. Comedy can be an effective way to connect with teens, understand their world, and initiate meaningful conversations. Movies like Mean Girls use humor to highlight real issues in adolescence.     About Steven Shapiro: Steven Shapiro is a veteran school reimaginer, with over 30 years of K-12 classroom teaching experience, 15 concurrent years as a high school humanities program director, and four years as a district leader of experiential learning. Steven is the host of the acclaimed podcast Experience Matters. He delivers keynote presentations on topics including supporting parents in the digital age, addressing the youth mental health crisis, and designing authentic learning experiences. Steven and his wife Susan are the proud parents of three adult children.   About Nancy Shapiro Rapport: Nancy spent the majority of her 34-year public-education career as a school counselor, supporting students and parents in navigating the challenging “middle years.” Her leadership roles in professional development and crisis management showcased her ability to identify needs, empathize with various stakeholders, and deliver results. As a certified Hudson Institute coach, Nancy has extensive training in coaching and human development. She has taught courses on learner mindset and question thinking, helping adults pursue a life of curiosity, inquiry, and possibility. Nancy brings a wealth of experience in both child and adult learning to her role as co-founder of Our Family Culture. Most importantly, she is the proud parent of two adult children, Emily and Jacob.     Learn More About Our Family Culture: Website: https://ourfamilyculture.org/     Connect with Steven Shapiro: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/steve-shapiro-experience-matters/   Connect with Nancy Shapiro Rapport: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nancysrapport/   Connect with host, Kevin Stoller: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevinstoller/     Episode 226 of the Better Learning Podcast Kevin Stoller is the host of the Better Learning Podcast and Co-Founder of Kay-Twelve, a national leader for educational furniture. In the 2000s & 2010s, the Terrifying Teen Girl - from Jennifer's Body's Jennifer to Mean Girls' Regina George to Thirteen's Tracy & Evie and beyond - started taking back her power in movies and tv by getting to tell her *own* story. The teen girl had become a rather terrifying force in movies and tv at the end of the 20th century – adults just couldn't understand what was going on with teens, and so this fearful, outsider perspective informed on screen portrayals. But as the 2000s and 2010s rolled around, the terrifying teen girl on screen began to enter a new, more powerful phase. These stories actually grappled with the harsh, conflicting realities that teen girls have to deal with (and many felt much more real because now they were actually written by people who had, y'know, actually experienced being a teen girl instead of just outside observers. From lack of control to oversexualization to the intricacies of war in Girl World, these teens were constantly being pushed to the edge – but they were always up for the challenge. The Take

Mean Girls' Regina George is one of pop culture's most iconic high school villains. Perhaps the worst thing about Regina is that what's horrible about her is actually what's… true. Regina was a menace because she understood some pretty dark fundamental truths about the world, and the fact that she was right about them underlines some major problems in society. So let's take a deeper look at what Regina, unfortunately, got right in her outlook on life (and why it's so important that society, like Regina, learns to change for the better.)

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that is healing religious trauma through humor.  This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Filipina filmmaker, actor, and writer Giovannie Espiritu (@giospirit2) to talk about why 2004 dramedy Saved! Should've Been Gay. We do not think it is possible for there to be a more perfect guest for this episode than Giovannie who actually escaped from a biblical doomsday cult as a teenager. She had just recently left the cult when Saved! came out and helped her to process her religious trauma through super relatable humor (and a huge crush on Jena Malone).  For those of you who are unfamiliar with the movie, Saved! follows the story of Mary (Jena Malone) as she navigates the consequences of getting pregnant in her senior year of high school after sleeping with her boyfriend Dean in an attempt to “save” him from his homosexuality. Mary goes from being a poster child for walking with Jesus to a social pariah whose old friends try to exorcize the devil out of her for daring to have sex before marriage. Her best friend and American Eagle High's answer to Regina George, Hilary Faye (Mandy Moore), kicks Mary out of their girl band The Christian Jewels, and she loses the support of nearly the entire school. Luckily for Mary, the other outsiders, a Jewish girl named Cassandra and Hilary Faye's disabled older brother Roland, take her under their wing and help her to survive senior year.  Although this movie does technically have gay representation in Mary's ex-boyfriend Dean, we really do not see much of his experience once he is sent off to Mercy House to be de-gayed. We want to see how he revolutionized the other students at Mercy House, how he and his current “life partner” got together, and how he managed to get everyone to the prom. Basically, they need to give us a parallel movie to this one a la But I'm A Cheerleader that fills in the gaps of what happened after Dean got taken away. Personally we think Saved! could be a lot gayer. Mary is giving off really queer vibes the entire film, kicking the movie off by literally praying for God to give her the strength to sleep with her boyfriend (obviously a super straight thing to do). Then there's Hilary Faye whose name doesn't rhyme with ‘gay' for no reason. There is simply zero heterosexual explanation for that haircut.  We know one thing for sure, Saved! Should've Been Gay.  Follow us on Twitter: (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay questions at the end of every episode. If some of us have managed to avoid mean girls in life, we've had no such luck in art. The “mean girl”—a picture of idealized femininity who usually heads up a like-minded clique—has appeared in films like “Clueless,” “Heathers,” and, of course, the 2004 classic “Mean Girls,” written by Tina Fey. Recently, the mean girl has received a makeover. In this episode of Critics at Large, the staff writers Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss texts that have breathed new life into the trope, beginning with Ryan Murphy's “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,” which dramatizes the schism between the writer Truman Capote and the group of New York City socialites he called his “swans.” The hosts trace the figure of the mean girl through culture, from the character of Regina George—who returns in the 2024 movie-musical reboot of “Mean Girls,” albeit a little less mean than before—to the cast of “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.” Today, the archetype is ripe for projection, appropriation, and maybe even for sympathy. “The hope and the fear looking at these mean girls is imagining how great their lives must be,” Fry says. “But I think concurrently we would be happy to learn that, in fact, it's lonely at the top.” Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“The Allure of the Mean Friend,” on “This American Life”“Carrie” (1976)“Daniel Deronda,” by George Eliot“Euphoria” (2019—)“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” (2024)“Gossip Girl” (2007-2012)“Heathers” (1988)“La Côte Basque, 1965,” by Truman Capote (Esquire)“Mean Girls” (2004)“Mean Girls” (2024)“101 Dalmatians” (1961)“The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” (2020—)New episodes drop every Thursday. Reneé Rapp is one of the most exciting and inspiring forces on the rise right now in entertainment. Not only is she bubbling over with next level talent, but she also boasts a number of extremely admirable qualities, ones that can be hard for any artist to establish, let alone one just starting her career. Rapp operates with maximum conviction. She's someone who knows what she wants, and has absolutely no problem advocating for herself. Even better? She keeps her collaborators' best interest in mind while pursuing her own dreams.Rapp is often in the spotlight courtesy of her flourishing music career and highly influential social media presence, but her name is in even more headlines than usual right now thanks to her feature film debut, Mean Girls. After playing Regina George on Broadway, Rapp returns to the role for the new Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. directed film. Mean Girls 2024 holds tight to the 2004 original, incorporates a slew of songs from the musical, and manages to put its own fun, fresh spin on the narrative. In case you need the basics, Mean Girls follows homeschooled Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) after she moves back to the US from Kenya. Cady's got absolutely no clue how to navigate the high school social scene, but fortunately, Janis (Auli'i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey) swoop in to give Cady the lay of the land at North Shore High School, most importantly, a warning about The Plastics led by queen bee, Regina George (Rapp). Trouble is, the appeal of popularity proves too powerful. While on a secret mission to expose Regina as a “mean girl,” Cady starts to lose herself in the thrill of being at the top of the food chain and becomes a “mean girl” herself. With Mean Girls now playing in theaters nationwide, I got the chance to have a Collider Ladies Night chat with Rapp to discuss her journey with the Mean Girls franchise and where she gets her unflappable confidence.
