This week we kick off the new year with one of the most ambitious and iconic alt rock albums of the '90s.
In this week's episode of the Plural Pod, it's the latest instalment of ‘From Me To You'. The format is nice and straightforward: Joel picks an album for Gareth that he's never heard before and Gareth picks an album for Joel that he's never heard before. After some intensive listening, they reconvene to share their thoughts. That conversation is what you can hear in today's podcast. Gareth's been listening to The Smashing Pumpkins' ‘Siamese Dream', while Joel has wrapped his ears around Sunhouse's ‘Crazy On The Weekend'. But how did they find them? The 1991 debut album Gish by The Smashing Pumpkins marked the band's entry into the alternative rock scene with a unique mix of psychedelic rock, heavy metal, and dream pop elements. Produced by Butch Vig, who would later work with Nirvana on Nevermind, the album showcases the band's early experimentation with layered guitars, intricate rhythms, raw energy, and dense sonic textures that would become hallmarks of the Pumpkins sound. Although Gish did not initially achieve mainstream success, it garnered a strong underground following, helping to set the stage for the band's breakthrough with Siamese Dream in 1993. Celebrated for its unique blend of intensity and melody, it serves as an early glimpse into the Pumpkins' evolving musical ambitions, complete the fingerprints of Jane's Addiction, Van Halen, and Black Sabbath. What The Riff?!? makes another scary trip down the Halloween rabbit hole with these theme songs, movie and TV music, and rock songs with a bent towards the macabre. We hope you enjoy this third edition of "Halloween" from What the Riff?!? Highway to Hell by AC/DC The opening track to the 1979 album of the same name features Bon Scott on his last album as lead singer of the group before his untimely death. The name of the song was inspired by the group's gruesome touring schedule.Shout at the Devil by Motley Crue The Crue's 1983 breakthrough album of the same name would establish them as one of the most successful metal bands of the 80's. The song was controversial, with many believing that it encouraged devil worship, though the lyrics themselves do not explicitly do so.Disarm by The Smashing Pumpkins Off their breakout album "Siamese Dream," this song references "the killer in me is the killer in you" is inspired by Billy Corgan's contemplation of his negligent parents and suicide. The lyrics "cut that little child" caused the song to be banned by the BBC.Demons by Imagine Dragons This song off Imagine Dragons' major label debut studio album became their second top 10 single. It is really not about demons in the Halloween sense, but more the tragedies of life like abuse, PTSD, and mental illness.Voodoo by Godsmack The third single from Godsmack's self-titled debut album was inspired by Wes Craven's film “The Serpent and the Rainbow.” This song became Dave Bautista's theme song as Leviathan when he was in the WWE. Mommy's Little Monster by Social Distortion The title track from Social Distortion's debut album tells a horror tale of a kid becoming a punk rocker. It is another song about dealing with personal demons rather than the supernatural. Witch Wolf by Styx Early in their career Styx put out this song to lead off their third album, “The Serpent is Rising.” James Young takes lead vocal duties on this song that tells about a person accursed by a creature called the witch wolf, and night rider.Dragula by Rob Zombie The lead single from Rob Zombie's debut album may be his biggest hit. The audio clip at the beginning of the song is taken from the 1960 horror film “The City of the Dead.” The name comes from the TV sitcom "The Munsters," where Grandpa Munster has a dragster called "Drag-u-la."The theme to the TV series "Twilight Zone" This menagerie of bizarre tales from the early days of TV still has staying power in our sci-fi culture. Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones Mick Jagger walks us through a discussion with Old Scratch himself in this well-known classic from the Stones' catalogue. The idea is a narrative from Satan's point of view as he reviews historical events. That Old Black Magic by Frank Sinatra Old Blue Eyes gave us this romantic song with a Halloween bent. It was a jazz classic originally written in 1942 with lyrics penned by Johnny Mercer. Love is "that old black magic" in this tune.Night of the Vampire by Roky Erickson From this cult classic album "The Evil One," this song is one of a plethora of horror-oriented tracks on the album. Erickson spent a significant amount of time in mental institutions. The Kill (Bury Me) by Thirty Seconds to Mars Jared Leto, front man for the group (and perhaps better known as an actor today), has said this song is about the relationship you have with yourself, and confronting the dark side of who you are.Take Me to Church by Hozier This haunting hit song compares falling in love with a kind of death, and compares the lover to a kind of religion. Text us, and Rock on!What's the story behind the iconic album "Siamese Dream" by The Smashing Pumpkins, and how did the band overcome personal struggles to create a masterpiece? Join us as we unravel the album's production timeline and explore the pivotal roles played by producer Butch Vig, frontman Billy Corgan, and band members James Iha, D'arcy Wretzky, and Jimmy Chamberlin. From the orchestral touches added by Mike Mills, Eric Remschneider, and David Ragsdale, to the intense pressures of recording amid Chamberlin's heroin addiction and Corgan's mental health battles, you'll gain a deeper appreciation of the album's eclectic mix of alt-rock influences and its standout tracks like "Cherub Rock," "Today," and "Disarm."What connects barbershop raga and Seinfeld references to the emotional turbulence in Billy Corgan's music? We dive into eclectic and humorous topics, reflecting on quirky characters and the absurdity of certain cultural phenomena. You'll hear our playful banter as we analyze song lyrics, compare Corgan's work with Rush, and reminisce about the 1994 Lollapalooza concert. In between the laughs and personal anecdotes, we highlight the creative nuances of "Siamese Dream," appreciating its dreamy yet psycho aesthetic and the intricate compositions within.Ever wondered what makes "Silverfuck" a standout track? We energetically dissect the song's chaotic energy, drawing fascinating parallels to Jane's Addiction's raw emotional intensity. Our conversation blends musical critique with light-hearted reflections, including amusing hypothetical scenarios like "Silverfuck" as pre-job interview material. We wrap up on a soothing note with "Luna," a contrast to the rollercoaster of emotions found throughout the album. Stick around as we appreciate the technical prowess behind the band's fast-paced musicianship and share a special track from the "Sesame Sessions" rough mix, leaving you with smiles and gratitude for tuning in.Support the Show.
Siamese Dream Review by Greg Prato While Gish had placed the Smashing Pumpkins on the "most promising artist" list for many, troubles were threatening to break the band apart. Singer/guitarist/leader Billy Corgan was battling a severe case of writer's block and was in a deep state of depression brought on by a relationship in turmoil; drummer Jimmy Chamberlin was addicted to hard drugs; and bassist D'Arcy and guitarist James Iha severed their romantic relationship. The sessions for their sophomore effort, Siamese Dream, were wrought with friction -- Corgan eventually played almost all the instruments himself (except for percussion). Some say strife and tension produces the best music, and it certainly helped make Siamese Dream one of the finest alt-rock albums of all time. Instead of following Nirvana's punk rock route, Siamese Dream went in the opposite direction -- guitar solos galore, layered walls of sound courtesy of the album's producers (Butch Vig and Corgan), extended compositions that bordered on prog rock, plus often reflective and heartfelt lyrics. The four tracks that were selected as singles became alternative radio standards -- the anthems "Cherub Rock," "Today," and "Rocket," plus the symphonic ballad "Disarm" -- but as a whole, Siamese Dream proved to be an incredibly consistent album. Such compositions as the red-hot rockers "Quiet" and "Geek U.S.A." were standouts, as were the epics "Hummer," "Soma," and "Silverfuck," plus the soothing sounds of "Mayonaise," "Spaceboy," and "Luna." After the difficult recording sessions, Corgan stated publicly that if Siamese Dream didn't achieve breakthrough success, he would end the band. He didn't have to worry for long -- the album debuted in the Billboard Top Ten and sold more than four million copies in three years. Siamese Dream stands alongside Nevermind and Superunknown as one of the decade's finest (and most influential) rock albums. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/comics-in-motion-podcast/message

This intimate acoustic set recreated the band's Tower Records in-store appearance at midnight, on July 27, 1993, for the release of Siamese Dream (plus some extra goodies). Over that special weekend, Madame ZuZu's transformed into a Tower Records throwback with tons of Siamese Dream and Tower Records-themed merch. They say you can't go home again, but this week Dave and Caleb make an attempt to as they think about hometowns. The good, the bad, the people, what it means to bring your full grown up self to a place where you are perpetually 17 years old, and importantly, the power of music to become containers for all the parts of your life; songs that mean something to you as a kid and grow and mold with you as you get older, so that they feel both present and meaningful and "like home." They dive into the Smashing Pumpkins' seminal album, Siamese Dream, currently celebrating its 30th anniversary. And then they briefly discuss country music and all of its baggage in light of the album that most sounds "like home," Garth Brooks' 18-million-selling album, No Fences. We recorded this episode exactly two months ago on July 1, 2023. I still have seven more episodes to edit until I'm all caught up, and I'm afraid it'll still take a while. But I'm still just gonna take it easy, for if I work too hard then I'll just burn myself out. In 1993, a Chicago alt band was on such a verge of breaking up that the lead singer Billy Corgan pulled a McCartney and performed almost all instruments himself. What resulted is an album so successful that it kept the band together, and with a sound so big it influenced all the shoegaze, grunge, and post-grunge acts to come after. The theater kids check out Smashing Pumpkins' "Siamese Dream"!

Yo!This was one for the ages.Having being fortunate enough to be invited up to Sk8bar in St. Joe, I gladly accepted and -- while there -- was able to connect with Danny "Dr. 47" Phillips to record Episode # 75 of Badass Records podcast.Such a challenge. So much fun. So worth it.Seriously.I didn't know how I would attempt to make myself comfortable in someone else's space. I didn't know if I'd know how to set up all of the gear once I'd taken it apart for the first time, and I didn't know how I'd do (at all) attempting to conduct an interview beneath all of those details. But, alas...the stress and the anxiety were completely unwarranted.Brandon and Jesse welcomed me into their home away from home, and Danny was a gracious host/guest.He was every bit of (unsolicited) awesome as advertised, and was quick to quell the worries of my brain that a booker/promoter for a live-music venue would feel too busy to be participating in an interview for a podcast. And, the chat was -- in my mind -- perfect. We talked a little bit about the ol' life thing. The work thing. The...just...you know...doin' it thing. And of course we talked about a few of Danny's favorite records. He gave me a substantial list, and -- for shits and giggles -- I broke it in half. Here's what that looked like:List A:Sticky Fingers (1971), The Rolling StonesFleetwood Mac's Rumours (1977)Outlandos d'Amour (1978), The PoliceThe Lemonheads's It's a Shame About Ray (1992)Siamese Dream (1993), Smashing PumpkinsNirvana's In Utero (1993)A.M. (1995), WilcoList B:At Folsom Prison (1968), Johnny CashBig Star's #1 Record (1972)My Aim Is True (1977), Elvis CostelloThe Ramones's Rocket to Russia (1977)Last Splash (1993), The BreedersBad Religion's Stranger Than Fiction (1994)In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998), Neutral Milk HotelIf you want to get a hold of Danny for band-booking purposes, here are what I believe to be the best ways:1) Contact Sk8bar -- either via the landline (after 5:00 p.m. Central) at 816-689-0507 or via Facebook.2) Holler at Danny either via his Instagram or his Facebook page.3) You can also find him on Twitter, if you please, but, I digress...My chat with Dr. 47 was fantastic. Please consider giving it a view or a listen. Please check out Sk8bar, and please check out the Merch' store on the podcast's Web site. Even a sticker purchase helps.Anyhoo...as Jamal a.k.a. Jamel says, "Be kind, be good to each other, and help keep great music alive."At least that's what I think he says. Thanks for stopping by.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the promo or the intro/outro audio. Matt Smith is an O.G. homey, and I can't even begin to tell you how stoked I was to get him in the chair for Episode #72 of the Badass Records podcast. When I hatched this hair-brained idea in January 2021, Matt was a first-ballot must-have, and I couldn't possibly be more honored to have seen the thing through. Doesn't happen without Matt first saying he'd do an episode then getting me a list and ultimately carving a slice out of his busy week in town to come bullshit with me. So...many, many thanks, Matt.Like most of us, Matt's a lot of things. He's a son, a brother, a husband, a dad, a friend, a Chiefs fan, an executive producer, a hard-core lover of music, a great guy, and a good friend. It's always awesome to message with him, and hopefully catch him while he's in town, but it was really good to sit down with him and have a peek into his career lens. And...you know...chat records, too. Here're a few of Matt's faves:The Joshua Tree (1987), U2Pearl Jam's Ten (1991)Automatic for the People (1992), R.E.M.The Smashing Pumpkins's Siamese Dream (1993)No Code, Pearl Jam (1996)Please give our conversation a listen, and keep your eyes peeled for cool things coming from Matt's end. Beyond his current work projects, he might have a new, fun endeavor in the creation stages, and just maybe he'll get that pod' off that ground with that lovely lady of his.Thank you for your support, and don't forget to check out the Merch' Store!copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to either the promo or the intro/outro audio. They are samples taken from tracks called, "Inversion Layer" by Robert Walter's 20th Congress off of their 2013 release, Get Thy Bearings (c/o Royal Potato Family), and, "We're Ready" by Boston off of their 1986 release, Third Stage (c/o Geffen Records), respectively.
As a 13 year old from Southern California Russ Eisenman listened to KROQ, stole quarters from his step-father's nightstand and went to Tower Records in Campbell to buy cassettes recommended to him by one of the store's clerks. This opened up Russ' depth and knowledge of popular music. Many years later Russ Eisenman started with Tower Records working at Tower.com . By 2002 Russ was Tower's Chief Marketing Officer. And that clerk from the Campbell store? He rose to Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Universal Music Group, as Russ learned from a chance meeting years later. But back to Russ Eisenman…how does a guy who started off studying psychology, finished with a Masters Degree in Sports Management end up as Chief Marketing Officer for Tower Records? “Stalking Russ and Michael Solomon” is one answer. A background in one of the pioneering internet businesses of the 1990's (“before Google, before Expedia”) certainly helped. A drive and resolve after being diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma as a college student (he got through his treatments listening to The Smashing Pumpkins' “Siamese Dream” repeatedly) might have been a factor.Starting with Tower.com in 1999 under Mark Bressler, Russ worked alongside Jon Fiedner and Mike Farrace. Behind the scenes trying to get Retail Ops to embrace the Tower.com brand in the stores was an uphill battle. In this episode Russ Eisenman takes us behind the scenes of those heady and eventually turbulent days of Tower Records. He describes what he and his team contributed and what he witnessed during that time.

This week's guest is Butch Vig. He needs no introduction, but HERE WE GO. He is one of the most successful producers in rock history - having produced a handful of critically and commercially acclaimed albums such as Nirvana's ‘Nevermind', both ‘Gish' and ‘Siamese Dream' from Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth's ‘Dirty', Soul Asylum's ‘Let Your Big Light Shine', Foo Fighters' ‘Wasting Light', Jimmy Eat World's ‘Chase This Light' and the two latest Silversun Pickups records ‘Widow's Weeds' and ‘Physical Thrills'. In addition to producing, Butch is one helluva drummer - having played with Spooner, Fire Town, 5 Billion in Diamonds and, of course, Garbage. This was a milestone for both myself and the podcast; I love how it turned out. Butch is a sweetheart of a man and it made me love him and his career even more. I hope you enjoy the 5 records that helped shape Butch Vig into the producer and drummer he is today. Call / Text me YOUR picks @ (424) 253-6676 for a chance to be on the show. The Smashing Pumpkins' first two albums, Gish and Siamese Dream, were a huge part of the soundtrack for the early '90s alternative rock revolution. Still sounding revolutionary all these years later, the band's leader, Billy Corgan, recently brought the Smashing Pumpkins to Nashville's Bridgestone Arena for the Spirits on Fire tour, on the heels of their 11th studio album, Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts. The concept album is a sequel to the Smashing Pumpkins' definitive three-LP masterwork Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, from 1995—which also brought them crushing into the mainstream. Acts two and three of Atum are scheduled for January and April 2023. But meanwhile, there are live shows … and all the gear it takes to recreate more than three decades years of the band's signature sounds. PS: Special thanks to super-tech Trace Davis for his help with the fine points.Brought to you by D'Addario XPND Pedalboard.
