This episode is from the vault and was first released March 26, 2018. Have you thought about creating your own Adventure in Retirement? This podcast episode falls under the 2nd pillar, Significant Other (Be adventurous with your spouse), in the Six Pillars of Retirement. Jim Palmer is a marketing and business building expert and in-demand coach. He is the founder of the Dream Biz Academy and Dream Business Coaching and Mastermind Program. Jim is the host of Newsletter Guru TV, the hit weekly Web TV show watched by thousands of entrepreneurs and small business owners and he is also the host Stick Like Glue Radio, a weekly podcast based on Jim’s unique brand of smart marketing and business building strategies. Jim started thinking about and living his retirement lifestyle before retirement age. Instead of waiting for his retirement, he is living out a dream now while he continues to work. He and his wife sold their house and put the contents in storage. They are currently living on their boat, which they named Floating Home and traveling up and down the east coast. They are enjoying a more simple life.  He has created a dream business where he works with clients only 3 days a week and travels the rest of the time. He hopes to continue working for many years, beyond typical retirement age and says it will be possible because he hasn’t worn himself out with a work that is unfulfilling. It's time for a big adventure in retirement! It was Jim's wife's idea to live on a boat, but it's Jim who is the “boat guy” as he grew up on boats. When Jim married his wife, they wanted to have their own boat. However, between work, raising four children, and maintaining a home, they never had the chance to buy one. Once their children got married and moved on, and Jim's wife Stephanie said she is done with her job, suddenly they were no longer “landlocked.” They spent a few years trying to decide what they would do and where they would live, They did get a small boat which was big enough to sleep on but not that big. Eventually, his wife suggested they live on a boat. Jim's initial thought was, “We will need a bigger boat.” Then their adventure in retirement began. They sold their house, found a bigger boat, and moved on April 15th, 2017. They initially agreed to an an18-month plan. First, they went to New England to see their daughter and grandkids. Then they went to Chesapeake Bay, which is their home port, and they will go to Florida for their first winter. So, at the time of this interview, they were almost a year into their adventure in retirement. How is it? They love it so much! Jim feels living on a boat is like an everyday vacation. It's very relaxing, and it is just a simple life. They are now talking about a 5-year plan to continue their retirement adventure on their boat. What is it like living on a boat? I know very little about boats and tend to think of it as somewhat similar to living in an RV. Jim and Stephanie's boat is 50 feet long and 14.5ft wide. It has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. It's a motor yacht with almost 1000 horsepower. Jim said they don't want to go on a camping in the waters, they want to feel comfortable. They wanted to have a separate space if they needed it so it isn't too cramped. We talked about all the amenities in Jim's boat and the maintenance and repair that goes along with it. It is quite fascinating! An interesting fact is that you don't have to have your captain's license. The fact that you own a boat and can drive it means you are a captain. Both he and his wife have taken courses through the Co...

Speaking of Partnership: Personal Stories of the Power and Payoffs of Partnership

Jim Palmer is an in-demand business and marketing coach and founder of Dream Biz Academy. He has authored six incredible books and is a marketing whiz who loves to help business people grow to the next level and teaches the value of outstanding customer service skills.  Before Jim started his business 14 years ago, he was faced with long term unemployment and cancer (at the same time) while supporting a family of six. Today, Jim runs multiple 6 figure businesses and thrives at helping others do the same. Guiding Principle, Quote or Mantra Know the value of your time and be clear about your priorities.  Jim’s are God, family and then business. When You Tripped Up Jim had success with several businesses in a row and got to feeling like everything he did succeeded. And he decided to go into a retail business with his friend Bobby as 50/50 partners. The trip-up was they didn’t do enough research before going into the partnership. And in about a year they closed the business.  Jim firmly believes that the partnership could have been successful if they had just done more research before they jumped in. The “DUH” moment that changed your partnerships forever In 2009 Jim had many business going well and he joined a mastermind group to support him the further growing his businesses. This group revealed to Jim so many things that he should have been doing, but wasn’t because he found them uncomfortable. One day the leader of this mastermind group took him aside and asked him this: “How is it that you want to have a successful and profitable coaching business like some of the people here, yet you don’t seem to be willing to do some of the things they have done and continue to do to build their businesses? How is it that you feel you’re entitled to the same level of success without doing the work that is necessary?” This was a the “DUH” moment. (Jim has a more colorful term for it) And this was a pivotal moment that inspired Jim to do the work he needed to do to get over his fears and limiting beliefs. As a result of a couple of years of focusing on moving past those fears his work has grown like a rocket ship ever since. What is a current partnership you’re excited about? Jim and his wife of 36 years are going on their “big adventure” and going to live on a boat. They sold their family home of 28 years and are casting off in late April. And they are going to document it on a blog at www.ourfloatinghome.com (http://www.ourfloatinghome.com) and will document the adventure there. There is some nervousness, but way more excitement. They have always both been very conservative and safe in their lifestyle so this is quite a departure for them. What is the best partnership / relationship advice you have ever received? Always put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Things will look different in the morning. Before Jessica was a business owner she was an activist at a non-profit.  She loved doing the passion work and thought she would climb the ladder in the non-profit world.  But life changed, when she found our she was pregnant she decided to start her own business so she could have more flexibility with her work and be home with her son. Jessica is the host of the hit weekly web TV show, Interview Connections TV, she’s the host of the Rhodes to Success podcast and she is the co-host of The Podcast Producers, a ten episode audio series about the art and business of podcasting. Jessica is a regular speaker at Dream Biz Academy and has shared the stage with dozens of top podcasters at Podcast Movement and Podcast New England. She is married and is the proud mom to a very busy toddler named Nathan, and is expecting her second child in August 2015. We had a wonderful time chatting with Jessica. We talked about so much in this one-hour episode! About business, life, family, how she knew working for a non-profit was all about the passion and she knew she couldn't commit the same dedication after starting a family. We also chat about fun things like friends and living in the small state of Rhode Island.  A topic both Jessica and Danielle can talk about! ;) As we do every week, we start out by asking Jessica what success is to her, and her answer is of course awesome! She shares that success is about more than just money.  It's about feeling like you made it yet still wanting to go further. "My definition of success is being in a place in your life where you feel like you have made it, but there is still fun work to be done to make it even better." We talk a lot about when success shifted for Jessica.  For her it was when she transitioned into being a mom. Before becoming a mom Jessica says a lot of her identity and goals were centered around things outside of herself. "When I became a mom everything changed...because then it became about making sure my kids have a good life and raising kids that are going to have a positive impact on society." Jessica also shares that it's important to make sure you celebrate the small things/moments in life. Appreciate the little joys in life.  After becoming a mom life slowed down and she looked at life in a different way. "You have to look at the little things in your life and not those big huge goals you aspire to because when those big huge goals are your definition of success it takes a long time to get there... it is kind of hard to reach success because it take so long" We also talk about owning an virtual/online business versus a brick and mortar store front, the book Strength Finders 2.0 as well a the Podcast Junkies episode with Lou Mongello. Check out Season 1 of The Podcast Producers and look out for Season 2, coming soon!
