This podcast episode falls under the 2nd pillar, Significant Other (Be adventurous with your spouse), in the Six Pillars of Retirement. Jim Palmer is a marketing and business building expert and in-demand coach. He is the founder of the Dream Biz Academy and Dream Business Coaching and Mastermind Program. Jim is the host of Newsletter Guru TV, the hit weekly Web TV show watched by thousands of entrepreneurs and small business owners and he is also the host Stick Like Glue Radio, a weekly podcast based on Jim’s unique brand of smart marketing and business building strategies. Jim started thinking about and living his retirement lifestyle before retirement age. Instead of waiting for his retirement, he is living out a dream now while he continues to work. He and his wife sold their house and put the contents in storage. They are currently living on their boat, which they named Floating Home and traveling up and down the east coast. They are enjoying a more simple life. He has created a dream business where he works with clients only 3 days a week and travels the rest of the time. He hopes to continue working for many years, beyond typical retirement age and says it will be possible because he hasn’t worn himself out with a work that is unfulfilling. It's time for a big adventure in retirement! It was Jim's wife's idea to live on a boat, but it's Jim who is the “boat guy” as he grew up on boats. When Jim married his wife, they wanted to have their own boat. However, between work, raising four children, and maintaining a home, they never had the chance to buy one. Once their children got married and moved on, and Jim's wife Stephanie said she is done with her job, suddenly they were no longer “landlocked.” They spent a few years trying to decide what they would do and where they would live, They did get a small boat which was big enough to sleep on but not that big. Eventually, his wife suggested they live on a boat. Jim's initial thought was, “We will need a bigger boat.” Then their adventure in retirement began. They sold their house, found a bigger boat, and moved on April 15th, 2017. They initially agreed to an an18-month plan. First, they went to New England to see their daughter and grandkids. Then they went to Chesapeake Bay, which is their home port, and they will go to Florida for their first winter. So, at the time of this interview, they were almost a year into their adventure in retirement. How is it? They love it so much! Jim feels living on a boat is like an everyday vacation. It's very relaxing, and it is just a simple life. They are now talking about a 5-year plan to continue their retirement adventure on their boat. What is it like living on a boat? I know very little about boats and tend to think of it as somewhat similar to living in an RV. Jim and Stephanie's boat is 50 feet long and 14.5ft wide. It has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. It's a motor yacht with almost 1000 horsepower. Jim said they don't want to go on a camping in the waters, they want to feel comfortable. They wanted to have a separate space if they needed it so it isn't too cramped. We talked about all the amenities in Jim's boat and the maintenance and repair that goes along with it. It is quite fascinating! An interesting fact is that you don't have to have your captain's license. The fact that you own a boat and can drive it means you are a captain. Jim started thinking about and living his retirement lifestyle before retirement age. Instead of waiting for his retirement, he is living out a dream now while he continues to work. He and his wife sold their house and put the contents in storage. They are currently living on their boat, which is named Floating Home and traveling up and down the east coast. They are enjoying a more simple life. He has created a dream business where he works with clients only 3 days a week and travels the rest of the time. He hopes to continue working for many years, beyond typical retirement age and says it will be possible because he hasn’t worn himself out with work that is unfulfilling. It's time for a big adventure in retirement! It was Jim's wife's idea to live on a boat but it's Jim who is the “boat guy” as he grew up on boats. When Jim married his wife, they wanted to have their own boat. However, between work, raising four children, and maintaining a home they never had the chance to buy one. Once their children got married and moved on, and Jim's wife Stephanie said she is done with her job, suddenly they were no longer “landlocked.” They spent a few years trying to decide what they would do and where they would live, They did get a small boat which was big enough to sleep on but not that big. Eventually, his wife suggested they live on a boat. Jim's initial thought was “we're gonna need a bigger boat” Then their adventure in retirement began. They sold their house, found a bigger boat, and moved on April 15th, 2017. They initially agreed to an an18-month plan. First, they went to New England to see their daughter and grandkids. Then they went to Chesapeake Bay which is their home port, and they are going to go to Florida for their first winter. So, at the time of this interview, they were almost a year into their adventure in retirement. How is it? They love it so much! Jim feels living on a boat is like an everyday vacation. It's very relaxing and it is just a simple life. They are now talking about a 5-year plan to continue their retirement adventure on their boat. What is it like living on a boat? I personally, know very little about boats and tend to think of it as somewhat similar to living in an RV. Jim and Stephanie's boat is 50 feet long and 14.5ft wide. It has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. It's a motor yacht with almost 1000 horsepowers. Jim said they don't want to go on a camping in the waters, they want to feel comfortable. They wanted to have separate space if they need it so it isn't too cramped. We talked about all of the amenities in Jim's boat and the maintenance and repair that goes along with it. It is quite fascinating! An interesting fact is you don't have to have your captain's license. The fact that you own a boat and can drive it means you are a captain. Both he and his wife have taken courses through the Coast Guard. Jim's job is to drive the boat and do maintenance on the boat. His wife's job primarily is the navigator.

For the most part we are the same person throughout our lives, success does not fundamentally change who you are. The Definition Of A Decision Highly successful people have the ability to assess a situation, question, or opportunity and quickly make a decision. If you believe in the value you provide to your customers, you have to push them to make the decision that will benefit them. Dealing With Decision Fatigue Hire and train right, empower your team to make decisions as well. Don’t be afraid to take some time to refresh. Make the conscious decision to rest. Transformational Decisions If you are going to expect other people to respect your time, you have to respect yourself as well. This one is definitely worth a listen all the way through as Jim packed a lot of inspiring advice into this half hour, much more than I could fit in the blog. Enjoy! On early boating experiences.....I grew up boating. My grandparents had a cottage on a Lake in Western Massachusetts. My parents grew up in that cottage. I remember I learned how to water ski there on this little 14’ boat with a 40 hp Evinrude engine. I just really love the water and boating. My parents had a boat. My older brother is big time into boating. My own boating career started four years ago. We bought a 30’ Sea Ray that we kept at the top of Chesapeake Bay. On deciding to live aboard.....A little more than a year ago, Stephanie was retiring from her career and came home and said ‘I think its time for a big adventure.' We didn’t know quite what that meant. Eventually she said hey, what if we lived on a boat? We sold our house and we bought a 50’ Carver motor yacht. On how the adventure is going so far.....We are so in love with this boat. I loved my Sea Ray, the only difference is Sea Ray had so many great t shirts and Carver makes nothing! We have been loving life. It is slower, easier and we can feel disconnected from everything so much easier. It's an amazing lifestyle. On how boating equals stress relief.....We had about an hour and twenty minute drive on Fridays from our home to our boat and we could feel ourselves de-stressing on the drive. When we stepped on the boat, 100% of whatever was going on that week was forgotten. It was an amazing way to de-stress. We could go ten minutes, drop anchor, and feel like we were on vacation. On how to follow their adventure.....We started a blog – ourfloatinghome.com – everybody was so curious about where we were going and how to stay in touch. I just wrote a blog post called ‘Simple, Slower, and Chores’ and I describe how simple life is on the boat. We get up, I go up and watch the sun go up over the water, have breakfast. I love watching boats. We’re always looking at the water. It’s a slower way of life. We have no commute. We’re not dealing with traffic. We’ve got reality TV just outside our boat. And then for chores, when I had my home, I was tired of cutting the grass and shoveling the driveway, all that stuff. The thing about the boat, it’s always gotta be clean, something always gas to be fixed, and I don’t mind! I would so much rather wash and wax my boat than mow my lawn or weed whack! On planning their route, or not.....It’s less planned out than you might think. We came up with an 18-month plan. It’s not bothering us that we don’t have a specific reservation or know where we’re going. I’ve structured my coaching business to do three days per week. All the calls happen Tuesday-Thursday. Friday through Monday we can be mobile. If we pull into somewhere we love we can stay there. We’re totally flexible and loving not having an exact idea of what we’ll be doing. On useful technology for living aboard.....I have so many apps. I have an app called BoatTracker which will tell you your average speed, top speed, how long you were out. That’s a very good way for me to keep track of oil changes and things like that. It will also show you with a satellite where you were with your entire trip. There’s another one I got called Anchor Alarm. When you set your anchor, you use your finger and draw a little area that the boat is allowed to swing. If it heads out of the circle you have drawn, it will alert you. The other thing I use is Navionics. It’s always updating and is really cool. On 'Just Saying Yes'.....Some people say you should have waited a year and maybe, but are you ever really ready? Sometimes you just have to say yes and go for it. Sometimes you can overthink things, the what if. When you get really excited about doing something big in life, you get romantically excited about it but then the other side of our brain kicks in and we start playing the what if game. On using Social Media to further boating education.....We both belong to a lot of these Facebook groups. There’s a facebook group called LiveAboard, Trawler Living, Carver facebook groups. There's boat repairs, so many things you can learn from other people. There’s an education out there if you’re willing to look and be open minded. On possible future boating plans.....There’s a thing called the Great Loop! We started reading these books and it’s something we are considering. We’ve read several stories of people who do the Great Loop, it takes them about a year. One of the things that appeals to us when you do the great loop, most of it is slow. Key Takeaways [3:27] If you put enough good information out there, with a servant attitude, giving value and helping people without expecting return, you get a reputation as a servant thought leader. [6:17] When Jim became an entrepreneur he remembered Sam Walton’s words about the customer’s power to fire everybody by deciding to spend somewhere else. In online marketing in 2006, everything was ‘free.’ If you are really giving, people gravitate toward you. Jim has a free download, “Serve First, How to Unlock a Life of Abundance and Purpose.” No email is needed. [10:32] Jim talks about his book, Decide. High achievers, when presented with a challenge or an opportunity, quickly assess the pros and cons, and then make a decision, yes or no, and act. They never go to ‘Squishyville,’ because business and life happen too quickly. [20:38] Jim’s four pillars of success are Knowledge, Environment, Mindset, and Habits, similar to the growth mindset sought for in special operators. In any field, there are the ordinary, and the high achievers. Very few qualify for the elite. You have to do things that others will not do. [22:45] Environment is space you create. To write, Jim picks the time, sits at his desk, and puts away all distractions. The only thing he wants to do is type what’s in his head. He can write for two or three hours. You have to be able to control the environment, in order to produce the result. [24:03] Mindset is much more important than perfecting your skill or talent. Some very top copywriters get 10 times what a normal copywriter gets. They don’t write 10 times better. Habits are self-evident. Rich people have big libraries, and poor people have big TVs. Have habits in place to make your priorities happen, and create and protect the environment to do it. [26:55] Knowledge for highly successful people means to own who they are; their strengths and limitations. They hire and delegate. To help his business, Jim joined a Mastermind. The leader asked, “What makes you think you’re entitled to the same level of success as these peers ... but you’re not willing to do the same things that they’re doing to grow their business?” [30:23] The idea of a multi-day live event petrified Jim for a few reasons: picking the right date; renting space with food and beverage and a number of guest rooms guaranteed; and fear of disappointing attendees by forgetting how to present. He kicked his fears to the curb, and found out he’s pretty good at it, with five sold out. That’s when he began to accelerate significantly. [31:38] Dan Kennedy is the person most influential on Jim’s development. Dan is a blue-collar guy who built a multi-million dollar business, because he understands people, he understands marketing, and he’s not afraid of hard work. He does something everyday that will bear fruit down the road. Jim learned much about writing from reading Dan Kennedy’s books. [33:40] Jim gave coaching for The Leadership Podcast, which stands in its own unique space. He likes the back-and-forth. His greatest advice to Jim and Jan is to avoid adhering to a strict format and schedule of questions, but to have a lot of conversation starters, and to follow up on answers of interest. I asked what I was suppose to do with my life." His wife encouraged him to be a support group for people that were unemployed, if not to help himself, to encourage others. He has written other books, including the Pumpkin Plan and Profit First. When an entrepreneur starts a business, there's a lot of time but no money. However, when the business gets bigger, there is money but no time. Only about 5% of entrepreneurs are able to get systems and processes into place, allowing them to be free. Jim's wife jolted him back to reality when she asked him when they were going to go on vacation – something they were unable to do during the lean years. The reality of time freedom hit him. Then, he hired his first virtual assistant. Jim brought up an interesting concept, “When I,” which is about moving your goal past when you should be investing in the future and the future company you want to have. The fastest way to get there is by getting a coach or working with somebody with experience. Another point Jim brought up is automating his business and documenting everything to a point where if something happens to him, his wife could effectively take over. Mark has done the same thing. Putting systems and procedures in place will allow you the flexibility of either continuing your business or selling it to a new owner who can then take over two days later and continue to run it. That's a big part of getting top dollar for your business. For Mark, it's in a Dropbox folder named, “In Case of Death.” Jim's journey to becoming a prolific marketer and author of six books started with his first book. From this experience, he has learned that you don't need to be perfect. A lot of people suffer from perfectionism, which prevent them from doing things they can be doing. Jim's advice is to decide you want to be judged on the value of the information and content you're providing. Being his authentic self has been liberating for him. Just be a prolific curator of the content. The content draws people to you. You just have to remember that people consume content in a number of different ways. Adam Grant's book, the “Originals,” talks about people like Mozart and Bach who create original work. They kept creating work and as they did this they created masterpieces! Getting stuck because of perfectionism is something you can avoid. Good is good enough and you can always go back and iterate your past work. Mark calls it, “embracing the suck!” What's important is that you have to be your authentic self because it's liberating. Putting yourself out there will attract the right kind of people and repel people you're not meant to do business with. You also need to be immune to criticism. You will not have a shortage of people who are going to tell you that you should be doing things differently. Jim mentions a hater who commented about his video where he also featured his dog. The hater said when Jim looked at his dog, he was disrespecting the audience. One way to deal with it is like water off a duck's back. Grant Cordone's take on this is if you're not getting haters, you're not working hard enough. Even if you only have 30% of your audience that's going to love you, you can already make a nice living off them. One of the main things you need to do to be successful in business is to cure a pain and solve a problem. Starting with his No Hassle Newsletter, several other businesses came from that. The ideas usually came from customers who wanted more help. Jim says you shouldn't overthink. That's what gets you stuck. He doesn't celebrate initial transactions but rather, he celebrates lifetime customers. It's your job to find out all the other ways you can help them enrich their lives. In dealing with haters, Jim asks his assistant about the background of that particular hater and if no business has been generated out of that hater, he just hits the unsubscribe button. He will not put up with being disrespected. When asked if Mark had the Best Passive Income Model, Jim says he's got one heck of a killer model. More importantly, Jim pointed out Mark's clarity, enthusiasm, and passion for the business. He also pointed out vital things you need to succeed in business such as the processes and systems that are in place and that Mark knows his numbers. Since buying and selling raw land is not something the big companies are interested in, Mark is essentially flying under the radar too! Jim also applauded Mark's abundance mentality. “Sharks swim in dense packs where there's ample food supply,” a successful person once told Jim. Mark says that there's always room for innovation similar to Cirque de Soleil's model. They took the zoo, combined it with theater, and created a completely new market segment. TIP OF THE WEEK Jim: If you want to make a boatload of money, stop answering your phone. You will earn significantly more income for who you are than what you do. It's about your positioning in the marketplace. As a coach, it doesn't help him to answer his phone like an operator. If people jump through hoops to be able to talk to him, he has already positioned himself because it now becomes a big deal to speak with him. You also want to have someone in your business, who will hold your feet to the fire so you can get things done and that is how you grow. Main Questions Asked: - Talk about the first time you experienced a business coach. - What are your thoughts on people wanting to wait until they get to the next level to hire a business coach or people who say they can't afford it? - What is the Million Dollar Platform? Key Lessons Learned: Working With a Business Coach - If you are working with a coach, it has to be a person with a successful track record. - The right coach is someone who is going to push you, tell you when you aren't doing things right, and when you are making stupid decisions. - You don't need a friend, you need a coach who will tell you what to do and hold you accountable. - Ask yourself, “Am I growing a business or friendships of likeminded entrepreneurs?” The answer should be business. Being a Successful Entrepreneur - A successful entrepreneur is someone on the move, who is climbing and taking people along with them on the journey. - As an entrepreneur, if anyone is going to slow you down on your journey, you have to cut the rope. - Ego often gets in the way for entrepreneurs. If it is not the entrepreneur's idea, then they often don't buy into it. - Will you be more hung up on ‘whose idea it is' or who actually gets the credit? Focusing on Revenue Generating Activities - If you want to ‘do it all by yourself,' then you are creating a job for yourself. - Entrepreneurs come to the table with a skill or talent. However, a successful business needs accounting, marketing, and administration as well, but at a certain point you have to be focused on the skill that bought you to the table. - That skill is your revenue generating activity. You need to focus on that skill and outsource all other skills. Purchasing Speed of Growth - As an entrepreneur, you have to put money out before you get it back in. - There are two types of ‘you': 1. Current you/You that you want to be. 2. Business you have today/Business you want to have. - The only way to get where you want to be is to invest. - You can purchase speed of growth by getting connected with a coach or mastermind group. - These are people who have been there and done what you are trying to do. Getting involved and following good advice will give you a shortcut. - It's only an expense if it fails to produce a return on the investment. - Green Eyeshade Thinking: An accountant will make a decision on the numbers ‘today.' Entrepreneurs think of the numbers you can ‘make.' - There are so many ways to get a return on investment with a coach and mastermind group. - This comes on from ideas and implementing what you do right, as well as saving money by not implementing things too. Tough Love and Defending Your Position - Don't make rash decisions after you get ‘tough love' as the ego can help and hurt you. - Sometimes we get so emotionally tied to something, even when you get feedback from lots of people saying ‘no,' it's hard to do. - Defending your position often helps you to really think your idea through. - When someone challenges, you'll either defend it saying it's a good idea or start to question yourself.
