The Orthogonal Bet: The Art of Naming

Welcome to The Orthogonal Bet, an ongoing mini-series that explores the unconventional ideas and delightful patterns that shape our world. Hosted by Samuel Arbesman. In this episode, Sam speaks with Eli Altman, the managing director of A Hundred Monkeys, a company that specializes in the art of naming. A Hundred Monkeys works with clients to come up with the perfect name for a company, product, or anything else that requires a name. The art of naming is a fascinating subject. Throughout human history, the power of names has been a recurring theme in stories and religion. A well-crafted name has the ability to evoke emotions and associations in a profoundly impactful way. Sam invited Eli to the show because he has been immersed in this field for decades, growing up with a father who specialized in naming. The conversation explores the intricacies of this art, how experts balance competing considerations when crafting a name, the different types of names, and what makes a name successful. They also discuss the importance of writing and storytelling in naming, the impact of AI on the field, and much more. Produced by Christopher Gates Music by George Ko & Suno

Good morning everyone and a happy 2023! Today on the first Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update of the calendar year, TABC varsity hockey begins the year the same way last year ended, DRS varsity basketball puts the pressure on the East with a 3-spot and Hillel enters the conversation in JV Basketball. All that and more, straight ahead, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. We'll start out in Varsity Hockey where the start of 2023 turned out to be a continuation of 2022 for the newly minted team to beat, the TABC Storm. Within a week and a half, TABC has taken control of the West and the league, knocking off Frisch and DRS. The Storm completed the sweep of their 2022 finals nemesis Cougars by the score of 5-3 behind a hat trick from senior Eitan Adler. They would then follow that up with a 6-2 drubbing of the Wildcats behind two goals apiece from senior Eli Altman and Junior Shay Fields. As a result, TABC is 10-1, but currently sit one point behind Frisch, who have 21 points, by virtue of that OT loss to TABC 2 weeks ago. Both TABC and Frisch now head into the break, but for the Storm, the road to making March 2023 different than March of 2022 has already begun. In other action, only a week after appendix surgery, Rambam Junior Zevi Herskowitz makes an emergency appearance in the last 7 minutes of the Ravens' contest with Magen David last night and single-handedly turns a 5-3 deficit into a 7-5 victory keeping Rambam's slim playoff hopes alive. Also, HAFTR takes two wins on the week, knocking off YDE and HANC, stopping the Hurricanes 3-2 in overtime, on yet another Jacob Wolf extra-session winner. In JV, TABC has also established themselves as the favorites, jumping out to an early lead on DRS en route to a 4-1 victory, and becoming the sole remaining undefeated team in the league. Frisch kept their playoff hopes alive defeating Ohr Yisroel 4-1, moving into a tie between the two teams, but both will likely need to win out, which include a game against MTA for both and contests with TABC for Frisch and SAR for Ohr Yisroel and have help out East to keep Flatbush away to have any shot at the postseason. MTA is now 3 points up on both after knocking off JEC last night. Moving over to varsity basketball, they may not be leading the East, but the rate that DRS are knocking off opponents sure has put pressure on the rest of the league to keep pace down the stretch or fall behind. The Wildcats took three wins in 4 days, knocking off Rambam, Flatbush and HAFTR to end 2022, upping their record to 10-3. North Shore still leads the East at 10-0 and don't seem likely to fall so far, even with a matchup with DRS looming at the end of the month, but for Magen David who, after losing to Flatbush this week, currently sit at 8-2, only one loss ahead and with games against undefeated North Shore and SAR and 2-loss TABC on the docket, one more false step could find the Warriors on the outside looking in at a first-round bye. In other action, TABC got their 9th win and thrust Hillel virtually out of the race for a West bye, with a 59-53 Overtime win behind 19 from Yaakov Salamon. The Hillel JV Basketball heads in the opposite direction, though, taking wins on the week over Maor and JEC to improve to 5-3, locking up a playoff spot and thrusting them into the race for a first-round home game. A game with Frisch, also 5-3 this coming Sunday will determine which will be guaranteed that berth, but, spoiler, the two could potentially meet again at whomever wins come the first round of the playoffs. With the playoff race heating up, keeping up to date is a must, and the best place for that is Yeshiva League Pass. For all the latest scores, standings and rankings for both hockey and basketball be sure to follow Yeshiva League Pass on Instagram. And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg!

This episode recaps of some stuff we have touched on in our previous episodes, some new revelations, and a bit of a story time. Ben went back and listened to all of the episodes before starting to record this one. Firstly, I would like to apologize for the echo happening in Episode 2. I listen to a lot of loud music and my headphone volume was at its maximum level so I could hear Sophia, but my mic picked it up. Second, its been nice to be able to reflect on the journey of self employment so far. I feel like I am out of the honeymoon stage and its now a reality. I want to suggest that our listeners keep a journal of their highs and lows of self employment and read back and reflect often. All week I have been second guessing my choice to be self-employed, and listening to how excited I was when it first happened helped me to get excited about it again, but also be more realistic with my expectations. Here's what we talk about: 1. It's hard to not take it personally when things don't pan out, but you have to remember—it's just business. The people that I have reached out to and said they were excited to work with me has not panned out exactly how I wanted it to, but its important to remember their projects probably aren't panning out the way they want it to. They have clients to answer to, budgets to meet, and bosses to get permission from. Remember that your relationship at work and outside of work are two different entities with a little bit of overlap. 2. I am back from my vacation, and surprise—I didn't work! Instead I read a great booked called Run Studio Run by Eli Altman, Creative Director of A Hundred Monkeys. I won't give away too much, but its an easy read and gives some great advice on how to run a small creative agency. It does specifically say that it is not meant for freelancers, but don't let that discourage you from reading it. If you are working with small agencies, it gives some great insight on how they run, and there is some advice that you can apply to self employment. 3. New revelation (sometimes I am naive). It's not personal, its business when it comes to me too. Sitting around waiting on someone to give you work because they said that they "might have something coming in hot" doesn't mean that you actually have work. Continue to reach out, network and let people know you are available. If you are lucky, you will be so busy you will have to politely turn down work. 4. The Email Story: That time I got burned via email and fired from doing free work. Today’s episode marks the end of season one, but certainly not the end of this podcast. Plans for season two are already underway, and I’m very excited about some of the guests who’ve already signed on. I’ve organized this season-one wrap-up episode loosely around the naming process: the naming brief, name generation (as well as a few tips on what to do if you get stuck), shortlisting, prescreening, and presenting names. For each step, I’ll call out some comments I found especially interesting or informative from interviews with nine naming experts: Anthony Shore of Operative Words; Shannon DeJong of House of Who; Clive Chafer of Namebrand; Steven Price of Tessera Trademark Screening; Amanda Peterson, formerly of Google; Jonathan Bell of WANT; Laurel Sutton of Sutton Strategy (and formerly of Catchword); Scott Milano of Tanj; and Eli Altman of A Hundred Monkeys.

Eli Altman runs A Hundred Monkeys, a naming and branding agency in Berkeley, California. A Hundred Monkeys was founded by Eli's dad, Danny Altman, in 1990. Eli grew up helping his dad come up with name ideas, and the second he was old enough to sound like an adult on the phone, he was taking on freelance naming projects. In addition to running A Hundred Monkeys, Eli wrote the Amazon bestselling naming workbook, Don’t Call it That. He has a new book coming out soon called Run Studio Run, all about the business of running a small creative studio. On this episode of How Brands Are Built, Eli talks about his "naming workbook" (Don't Call It That), the naming process he uses at A Hundred Monkeys, pitfalls for new namers, and what it was like growing up the son of a professional namer.
