This morning John Voket and the award-winning For the People will help clarify why business executives and technology professionals should plan to attend the October 15 North East Annual Cybersecurity Summit. Then you'll hear how an inspiring team from Family ReEntry is turning young people coming out of incarceration into productive, community-minded citizens. And we'll close reminding you about the final 2019 Connecticut Walk to End Lupus - and learn about some of the resources and cutting edge research being funded by the organization.
Lupus is a disease that is a complete mystery. Where'd it come form? What's the cure? How can we help stop this tragedy from getting worse? Listen to find out what is going on and how you can help.
This week, John Voket visits with the Umbrella Center for Domestic Violence Services to talk about Domestic Violence Awareness Month events and some of the newest services being offered to victims through the Center. And since October is also SIDS Awareness Month and October 15 is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day we'll focus on First Candle, a Connecticut based non-profit committed to eliminating SIDS and other sleep-related infant deaths. And we'll close reminding listeners about the thousands of Connecticut folks coping with Lupus, and invite you to the October 14 Walk to End Lupus Now in Norwalk.
I was truly honored to host the 4th annual Walk to End Lupus in Newport News a few weekends ago! Lupus is a mysterious disease that is poorly understood by many. People affected by this brutal disease can often feel alone and powerless. But that day was the exception. That Saturday was a day that members of the lupus community came together to form a united bond and take steps toward a cure.

Wilma Comenat is the local Regional Director of the Lupus Foundation of America and Michelle Morrison is a young woman living with the disease, lupus. The word 'mystery' occurs a lot when speaking of this disease because it manifests in many different ways, mainly affecting women. About 1.5 millions persons live with this disease in the US. Research is key, and funding is critical to supporting research. The Lupus Foundation has a very interesting/fun event coming up on May 19. Preregistration is required, as participation is limited for "The Great Unknown", a day of 5 different experiences using brain, brawn, and have a sense of adventure! The Walk to End Lupus is September 22. Other volunteer opportunities abound! www.lupus.org/pacificnorthwest

This week on the award-winning 'For the People' host John Voket fittingly dedicates this first segment of October to all those Breast cancer survivors and those who have lost the fight, with a two-time breast cancer survivor who wants to invite you to start Making Strides Against Breast Cancer this October. Then we'll meet the director of the Connecticut Business Leadership Network whose members bring diversity full circle by welcoming individuals with disabilities into their workplace. We'll also learn about free ongoing career fairs and programs connecting businesses with the untapped assets disabled individuals can bring to their workforce. And we close with another inspiring guest who is living with Lupus, who wants to share how the upcoming Walk to End Lupus Now is supporting research and outreach services to thousands of state residents touched by this disease.
