Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"Some time in the future. Humanity has expanded beyond. You sit at the edge of the market, feeling the hum of the space station below you. It's late, only a few of your fellow travellers mill about, seeking out food, drink, company. Staring up, through the glass of the Starport, you see infinite, unthinkable galaxies. Everything feels too big and too small all at once. You are part of The Machine."Ao Nang night market, Thailand reimagined by Goblin Market.

In this episode, Jed welcomes Emily Sun Li, debut picture book author of Mister Chow's Night Market, for a warm and lively conversation about creativity, culture, and doing life a little differently. Emily shares how living in Taiwan for two years—zipping around on a moped, drinking fresh juice, and visiting night markets almost every evening—inspired her story of a sleepy grocery store and its equally sleepy, grumpy owner, Mister Chow. When they can't manage mornings, they reinvent the store as a night market, celebrating night owls, Taiwanese snacks, and the courage to pivot instead of forcing yourself to fit a schedule that doesn't work for you. Emily and Jed talk about adaptability as a crucial skill for kids today, the joy and community of Taiwanese night markets, and the importance of stories that are immersively rooted in a culture rather than told through an outsider's gaze. Emily also reflects on intergenerational relationships, explaining why she loves that older characters are central to her book and how picture books can show that growth and self-discovery don't stop when you become an adult. She describes her path from teaching in Connecticut to teaching in Taiwan, then studying writing for children, discovering picture books as a poetic form, and learning how to leave space for the illustrator's storytelling. Later in the episode, Jed is joined by Andrea Wang, author of the Newbery Honor–winning picture book Watercress, who talks about growing up as one of the only Asian American kids in rural Ohio, finding refuge in books, and writing emotionally honest stories about family, belonging, and heritage.

The word is Haggis, since Keith just said goodbye to his beloved cat of that name. Keith talks about what a great cat he'd been, and how empty the house is now, without both Haggis and Ping. To cheer themselves up from this somber topic, the nerds talk at great length about ice cream — their favorite flavors, manufacturers, parlors, etc. Moving on to work stuff, Keith talks about his new project, The Night Market, and Andy talks about his newest game, Seven Islands. Lastly, they talk about media, mostly focusing on Star Trek's Starfleet Academy.

She brought you out for boba. But the truth bled through. In this soft-spoken F4F comfort audio, the air is thick with things unsaid. You walk the night market together, quiet laughter, a shared paper charm ritual, a secret ache neither of you knows how to name yet. She's trying to hold the line. You're trying to breathe. And somewhere between paper charms and paper-thin restraint, something begins to shift.

The Queens Night Market is one of New York City's most beloved institutions — but it was never supposed to last more than a year. John Wang, founder of the Queens Night Market, joins Infinite Loops to explain how a side project with a "terrible business model" unexpectedly became one of the most celebrated food markets in the world. From leaving a traditional legal career to imposing a strict price cap in one of the most expensive cities on earth, John shares how the market evolved into a cultural institution representing more than 100 countries through food.   Important links: Substack: https://newsletter.osv.llc/ Queens Night Market: https://queensnightmarket.com/

01. China vs. U.S. The U.S. does have things kind of similar, They are super social (社交的) night markets. They are not everyday-open. 那美国有类似于seasonal events(季节性的夜市活动)吗?The answer is yes.02. (Christmas Markets) are popping up (出现) everywhere. What are people posting (发布)?People keep posting like: “This is so magical (奇妙),” or “Can this stay open all year (这可以整年开放吗)?” 虽然听上去比较短,but it's really worth it (值得). Scene of the Christmas Market (圣诞集市的场景):1.Wooden chalet-style booths (小木屋摊位)2.Fairy lights (小灯串) 3.The smell of cinnamon and mulled wine drifting through the air... (空气中还弥漫着肉桂加热红酒的味道……)They are definitely Christmas vibes (氛围). 姜饼饼干(gingerbread cookies)It's cozy (舒适的), it's nostalgic (怀旧的), it's festive — but it's seasonal. 03. 人们可以尝到Mexican tacos(墨西哥塔可)、Korean BBQ(韩国烤肉),还有Japanese ramen(日本拉面)等来自不同地方的美食。 It's really a big melting pot of cultures (文化大熔炉) from all over the world. 美食车集市上会有long picnic tables(长野餐桌)、string lights(小灯串)以及live music(现场音乐)。People will buy five different dishes and share. The vibe (氛围) is very social. 04. “Night Market” in U.S. The night markets here would be referring to Asia inspired markets (由亚洲启发的市场) in cities, 而不是亚洲人拥有的“夜市”。 Something kind of similar are Farmer's Markets 农民在农贸市场上卖fresh produce(新鲜的农产品)。The groceries are organic (有机的). 05. Hosts' Favs: Top Night Market Treats 主播私藏:夜市心头好Erin:She loves烤冷面. She makes it at home sometimes, but it just doesn't hit the same (味道不一样)! 她非常喜欢在过节期间逛夜市,and she loves轰炸大鱿鱼(deep-fried giant calamari)。如果还能遇到乐队在露天舞台演出,she thinks that's perfect. What's your favorite Night Market Food?

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"This field recording put me in mind of the anxiety and sensory overload one can experience in crowded public spaces like the night market the original captures. The horns of cars, beeping of cars and cacophony of noises from busy stalls are transformed into abstracted noises, barely legible as their original forms, and the voices of workers and customers come in and out of focus, creating their own music detached from the meaning of the actual words being spoken. "My reworking is an attempt to capture and distil those feelings into frozen moments, unnerving and darkly compelling in equal measure. The unease of neurosis and social discomfort can provide its own soothing familiarity for those long-acquainted with its presence." Wuhan night market reimagined by Rowan Allen.

Wuhan's night markets are famously vibrant, but Changti Street's night market recording was chosen for its contrast with the afternoon one, highlighting shifts in life's rhythm and atmosphere. In this recording: nearby voices shift from passersby to seated diners, more stable; the next layer of pedestrians chat while walking, dynamic.  In the mid-to-distant background, restaurant workers and vendors shout, grills sizzle, loud exhaust fans rumble, and diners in narrow alleys clamor. The interplay of motion and layers creates a kaleidoscopic soundscape, starkly contrasting the afternoon's constant flux. Recorded in Wuhan, China by Digimonk.

Hear about travel to the Silk Road as the Amateur Traveler talks about his recent trip to the Gansu province of China, Buddhist Grottos, stunning landscapes, barren deserts, and the original Great Wall of China. More than 2,000 years ago, Emperor Wu of the Han dynasty sent his prodigy general Huo Qubing to seize the Hexi Corridor from the Xiongnu nomads, founding four fortified outposts—Wuwei, Zhangye, Jiuquan, and Dunhuang—that anchored the eastern Silk Road. Centuries later, the monk Xuanzang left Lanzhou for India along the same desert corridor, returning with Sanskrit scriptures that reshaped Chinese Buddhism. Following their footsteps today reveals grottoes, Great Wall forts, and rainbow-striped badlands that still echo with the sounds of camel bells and caravan legends. Transfer & check‑in: Fly into Zhongchuan Airport and settle downtown. Yellow River walk: Night flavors: Slurp Lanzhou hand‑pulled beef noodles, then graze at a Night Market for local delights. This was supposed to be the Queens Night Market's big summer... When the open-air market debuted in 2015, the crowds were massive. Founder John Wang selected food vendors who represented more than 90 countries. And he had one rule for them: no item could cost more than $5. That way the market would be accessible to nearly everyone, and big businesses would stay away. In 2019 the market set a new record for attendance, and finally started to turn a small profit. In 2020 they planned to release a cookbook. Instead, because of coronavirus, the market never opened. This week, to understand some of what we've lost to the pandemic, we share a vivid reminder of what we had. This episode originally aired on September 7, 2020, and was produced by Dan Pashman, Emma Morgenstern, Andres O'Hara, edited by Tracey Samuelson, and engineered by Jared O'Connell.
