Robin McAuley has built a legendary career spanning decades, establishing himself as one of rock's most enduring and powerful vocalists. Best known for fronting McAuley Schenker Group in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, his soaring voice became a signature of melodic hard rock. Collaborating with guitar virtuoso Michael Schenker, the group released classic albums like Perfect Timing (1987) and Save Yourself (1989), which featured hit tracks such as “Anytime” and “This Is My Heart.” McAuley's distinct blend of grit and melody set him apart in an era dominated by powerful vocalists.Beyond MSG, McAuley's career has been marked by his adaptability and relentless passion for music. He has worked with projects such as Grand Prix and Survivor, further cementing his reputation in the rock world. Over the years, he remained an in-demand vocalist, making guest appearances and lending his talents to numerous projects while continuing to tour. Despite shifts in the rock landscape, McAuley's unmistakable voice never faded, proving his longevity and versatility. In recent years, McAuley has seen a resurgence with the Frontiers Music label, releasing acclaimed solo work and forming the supergroup Black Swan alongside Reb Beach (Whitesnake, Winger), Jeff Pilson (Foreigner, Dokken), and Matt Starr (Ace Frehley, Mr. Big). Their debut album, Shake the World (2020), received widespread praise, proving that melodic hard rock still had a strong pulse. The follow-up, Generation Mind (2022), further solidified their chemistry, showcasing McAuley's still-powerful vocals and his ability to craft anthemic, emotionally charged songs.http://www.robinmcauley.com/
It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of a guitar hero giant who also happened to be an awesome singer and songwriter: John Sykes. He was a guitarist deserving of the title guitar god who rarely got mentioned in the same circles as the Satches, Vais, Rhodes, and Van Halens. Most known for his brief stint in Thin Lizzy at the end of their career and as a brief member of Whitesnake. He should have been a household for playing on the Whitesnake 87 album that sold 25M records worldwide, but he was fired before it came out. Kevin's a huge fan of Blue Murder, so we will focus on that band and some of the lesser-known projects he was involved in while also paying homage to his mainstream successes. New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Rest In Peace John. S8E4 was prerecorded on 22 Jan 2025 to allow me to attend the Green Day, Offspring, and Fokofpolisiekar gig live in Cape Town on 23 Jan the night this show went out on Rebel Rock Radio. And what a gig it was. It seems like forever since South Africa got International bands of that calibre. The last time I was out for a show was for Guns N' Roses in 2018, and then Covid happened and KISS got cancelled and that was the last time I was at a live gig. So, it was amazing and one of the best shows I have ever seen. Hats off to Fokofpolisiekar who show just how good they are amongst the best international acts in the world Anyway back to this show. We had all the normal features; Twisted Triplets, Evolutions: Judas Priest, The Immortals, and This Week in Rock and Metal, PLUS The Diabolical Challenge is back. This episode has three main ingredients: Shifty, Schenker, and shredding. What more do you need? Schenker was just 11 when he played his first gig with The Scorpions, and recorded on their debut LP, Lonesome Crow, when he was 16. He's been playing a Gibson Flying V since those early days, so it's only natural that both he and Shifty bust out the Vs for this occasion. While gigging with Scorpions in Germany, Schenker met and was poached by British rockers UFO, with whom he recorded five studio records and one live release. (Schenker's new record, released on September 20, celebrates this pivotal era with reworkings of the material from these albums with a cavalcade of high-profile guests like Axl Rose, Slash, Dee Snider, Adrian Vandenberg, and more.) On 1978's Obsession, his last studio full-length with the band, Schenker cut the solo on “Only You Can Rock Me,” which Shifty thinks carries some of the greatest rock guitar tone of all time. Schenker details his approach to his other solos, but note-for-note recall isn't always in the cards—he plays from a place of deep expression, which he says makes it difficult to replicate his leads. Tune in to learn how the Flying V impacted Schenker's vibrato, the German parallel to Page, Beck, and Clapton, and the twists and turns of his career from Scorpions, UFO, and MSG to brushes with the Rolling Stones. This week we are talking about bands that have rock stars in them: Supergroups and Offshoots. Captain Content reminds us that a band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. We dive into some of the more obscure supergroups and offshoots that didn't break with huge mainstream success or stay around very long. What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we talk exclusively about Supergroups featuring famous solo artists and band members along with, Offshoots which are bands that contain the bulk of a previous incarnation of a famous band. We hope that we turn you on to something new.Songs this week include:Neurotic Outsiders – “Nasty Ho” from Neurotic Outsiders (1996)Thrasher – “Bad Boys” from Thrasher (1985)Heavy Bones – “4:AM T-M” from Heavy Bones (1991)Ultra Bomb – “Time To Burn” from Time To Burn (2022)Saints Of The Underground - “Tomorrow Never Comes” from Love The Sin, Hate The Sinner (2008)Mad Season – “Lifeless Dead” from Above (1995)Far Corporation – “Stairway To Heaven” from Division One (1985)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/
In the 80s, the idea of special acoustic or unplugged albums and shows became a new medium that continues to today. Most think that Mtv started the movement in 1989 with their series called “unplugged”, however, most rock bands were playing acoustic renditions of their songs on radio when they would do in-town promotions long before then. This week we are celebrating bands that can re-imagine their songs with acoustic instruments and still rock! We are pulling the plug… and gasping for air guitars! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Mtv started a series in 1989 called “unplugged”, and almost every mainstream relevant act started producing acoustic albums or versions of their songs. This week we listen to some artist that you may have never considered as having acoustic interpretations of their songs.Songs this week include:The Struts – “Fallin' With Me” from Unplugged At EastWest - EP (2023)Kingdom Come – “Janine” from Live & Unplugged (1998)Helloween – “Future World” from Unarmed (2009) Wednesday 13 – “Scary Song” from Undead Unplugged (2014)Corey Taylor – “Lunatic Fringe” from CMFB… Sides (2022)Courage My Love – “For Now” from For Now (Acoustic Sessions) (2012)MSG – “Lights Out” from Unplugged Live (1993) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/
Lots of praise is regularly heaped on the early Michael Schenker era UFO material while the post Strangers In the Night Schenker albums get short shrift. We aim to rectify that issue with this latest In 40 Minutes segment. There are three albums to consider over a 7 year period between 1995 and 2002 with more than enough strong material to create an impressive 40+ minute set list of sparkling hard rock ... UFO style. This version of the band may have come unravelled soon thereafter (and in-between!), but there's no disputing these fighting men put out some great tracks during the period. Side One Walk On Water (1995) (0:00) Pushed To the Limit (3:47) Venus (9:01) Stopped By A Bullet (13:34) Knock, Knock Covenant (2000) (17:53) Midnight Train Side 2 (22:40) Fool's Gold (28:09) Unravelled (32:19) Serenade Sharks (2002) (37:15) Quicksilver Rider (41:23) Fighting Man
Michael Schenker celebrates the 50th anniversary of his tenure with UFO with the new album "My Years with UFO," featuring Axl Rose, Slash, and more. We are excited to have Dean Zelinsky on the show. While still in his teens, Dean founded his first guitar company, Dean Guitars, starting it from scratch. He talks to us about how a couple of trips to the Gibson factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan inspired his dream. After setting up his first factory in Evanston, Illinois, Dean went on to build iconic guitars for musicians like Dimebag Darrel, Billy Gibbons, Michael Schenker, Leslie West and Brad Paisley. Dean later moved on and currently builds guitars as Dean Zelinsky Private Label Guitars. He shares with us some of the innovations he's incorporated into his latest designs. We also talk about a few crazy stories and some of his favorite things about Chicago. Dean also has his own podcast, The Dean Zelinsky Show and you can hear even more stories about his guitar journey at https://www.deanzelinskyguitars.com/pages/podcast.Time Stamps:2:15: when did you first show an interest in guitars?4:36: When did you first start to tinker with how guitars worked?7:40: Did you really think you could figure out how to repair a guitar?10:30: What in you made you a doer?12:30: What was the reason behind the Gibson Guitars tour?17: How did you start the company?21: How much back and forth to make the guitar perfect?25:13: How do you start to build the company/approach guitar stores to sell your guitars?32:35: What is your mindset as things are taking off?35: What changed everything for Dean Guitars?42: Is this the time that you decide you wanted to sell the company?45:16: When did you get rock stars playing your guitars/how did you sell guitars backstage?54:37: How did the fur guitars come to be?60: What's still driving you to make guitars?70: Favorite venue to show your guitars, favorite venue to see a show?71:30: thin crust or deep dish fan?73:35: What makes Chicago unique?76:30: What's your go to cheap drink?79:25: Anything you'd like to plug on the way out?

Graham Bonnet talks about his career, Rainbow, Ritchie Blackmore, Michael Schenker, The Graham Bonnet Band and his latest plans in this very funny interview ! Thank you for all your support Phil Aston | Now Spinning Magazine
The influential British shredder talks about how he formed his playing style and demonstrates how to rip one of his most iconic leads. To hear Phil Collen tell it, he joined Def Leppard almost by accident. He had loaned the band one of his amps, and when they asked him to play some leads on their upcoming record Pyromania, Collen thought he was just doing his friends a solid. The rest is history. He and Shifty talk through Collen's formative years on guitar, where he soaked up the scorching playing of classic guitar heroes: Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Mick Ronson, Michael Schenker, and John Petrucci all played a hand in Collen's high-flying fretwork. How did Collen fit into the '80s arms race of speedy guitar playing? His participation might have had something to do with Thin Lizzy's Gary Moore. Collen's solo on “Photograph” is a perfect example of the sort of “ear candy” that producer Mutt Lange encouraged the band to chase in the studio—and yes, he did record individual notes to build a single guitar chord on Pyromania. But there weren't many tricks to Collen's sound on the solo. His Ibanez Destroyer and a 50-watt Marshall were all he needed to get the job done for the slick, Johnny Thunders-inspired solo. Tune in to see how he worked that two-piece setup to record one of the most influential guitar solos of the '80s. Click below to subscribe to the podcast! This week we continue the discussion that we started at the end of our last show; with our admiration of the almighty power of the guitar and the guitar hero! This time around we are going to play guitarists, or guitar passages or leads in songs that caught our ears at some point in our lives that made us truly stop and listen. It's not always about the training, finesse, dexterity, or speed a player has or even the style of music or song that is being played. If you are into guitar and the sound of strings being plucked and bent then you know… It's just something you feel deep down that gets to your heart and soul! What's this InObscuria thing?
