Today on the podcast, Sean discusses the new scripture memorization strategy that Destiny Church unveiled for their preteens in 2020. It is built upon the memorization wall, an idea discussed in Episode 135. With the A to Z memorization wall, preteens have a strong hook to remind them of the Scriptures they have memorized, and a built in method to keep the preteens reviewing the verses they’ve already remembered. Today on the podcast, Sean talks about something he’s been learning during 2020. With the governors of states closing churches and, in California, singing being banned from all church gatherings, many people, including Sean, have struggled with understanding how to and when to submit to authority. In this podcast, Sean shares different Scriptures that have guided his thinking about this topic, and he shares about how understanding “spheres of authority” has helped him to reconcile verses that say, “We should obey God and not man,” and verses that talk about “submitting to authority.” Have a question about preteen ministry or a unique preteen ministry idea that we can feature on our podcast? Today on the podcast, Sean speaks with Robert Quinn who is involved in the FourFiveSix Level 3 Peer Group. Robert just started a week ago, a Facebook community page for FourFiveSix. This came out of the thought that community and communication among ministries was a necessary aspect that the peer group felt was needed in preteen ministry. After just one-week people have already started sharing curriculum ideas and sharing summer VBS ideas. It offers a place to share pictures of things that are happening in your ministry. It is all about community. The vision behind it was a place for preteen leaders and pastors could come together and share ideas, thoughts, prayers for each other, and connect with each other. One thing that Robert has learned while ministering with his wife is networking and community is the best way to grow. By reaching out to others and sharing with one and another you can grown your ministry. People are the best resources when it comes to preteen ministry. Today on the podcast, Sean speaks about the idea of having preteens serving the younger students as a means of serving and ministering to preteens. Sean believes that this idea of having the preteens serving the younger students is a great FIRST STEP of beginning a ministry to preteens, especially when you don't have the resources to have a separate ministry for the preteens. FourFiveSix has lots of great information about how to start a preteen leadership program. Sean emphasizes that this is a great first step, but it is definitely not the last step. Sean explains there is more to the ministry like spiritual development for the preteens. He poses the question, what are you doing to engage preteens beyond allowing them to serve? Today on the podcast, Sean and Makenna discuss the new Diamond Collector Card Game developed by FourFiveSix. The card game was developed to help preteens talk about the pressures in their lives. There are three different colors that focus on specific pressures: red cards focus on pressures from God, green cards focus on pressures from peers blue cards focus on the pressures from authorities. These cards can be used a couple different ways. The Diamond Collector Game, where you are trying to create diamonds by using the pressure cards and the rock truth cards in your caves. In addition to the rock and pressure cards there are effect cards that can change things that occur during the game when they are activated. The goal of the game is to earn more diamonds than everyone else. A game similar to Apples to Apples. The first person puts out a pressure card and everyone else looks at their Rock Cards (bible verse cards) and turns one in that they feel would be helpful in the pressure situation. The person who placed the pressure card then reads the rock cards and decides which one best matches the pressure and they award diamonds to the winning card. Small Group discussion about pressures. There are also Small Group Discussion Questions included with the cards that can be used over the course of four weeks. The cards can be purchased at diamondcollectorcards.com or for ministry leaders you can go to fourfivesix.org/diamonds where you can purchase a 100-ministry pack which is enough for 5 students. You never know what somebody will say when you ask “What do you think is a good idea for preteen ministry?” That's what happened on today's podcast. As Terry and his crew were working in and around the FourFiveSix office, Sean asked Terry this question. His answer was great, and he asked Terry to come and record his thoughts. When a baby learns language, they don't learn by hearing definitions or reading the dictionary. They learn through example. Preteens are at an age where they are just starting to understand abstract concepts. Many of the concepts we want to teach them about God, the Bible, and Christian living are abstract. These concepts are not outside of preteens' grasp – they just need a step stool to reach them. Real-life examples can be the step stools in your teaching, helping preteens to reach concepts that otherwise might be outside their grasp. Today on the podcast, Chris and Sean share a couple examples of examples, and discuss how this has been an effective part of their teaching of God's Word to preteens. This week, Chris and Sean will be co-hosting the podcast. They start off this week by sharing a great idea they've seen in other ministries and are planning to implement in their preteen ministry (Elevate) this next year. One of the best ways to teach preteens something is by having them do it. If we want to teach them that prayer in important, but we never give them opportunities TO pray, then what we are actually teaching is that prayer is not THAT important. The method is the message. Today on the podcast, Sean and Chris share a way that they are planning to use this year to teach that prayer is important: by intentionally setting aside time each week to pray before service even begins. What plans do you have for next year in your ministry to preteens? Share your great ideas in the comment section below. Here's a fun game idea, that can be easily adjusted to match your group's dynamics. During pre-service, dress up and play the part of an investigative reporter. In Elevate (our preteen ministry), he was named Phillip Horchata. Philip walks around asking randomly selected leaders and preteens to fill in the blanks on ONE prewritten sentence. These are the WITNESSES. Here are some example sentences: When I eat a PB&J sandwich, it makes me ____________. If Peanut Butter and Jelly got into a fight, it would be ____________. Every Christmas, I dream of peanut butter and jelly __________. If peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were a song, it would be ___________. Peanuts are Brown, Jelly is Red, Sandwiches are _______________. Phillip records the name of the person filling in the blank for each sentence as well as their answer. He then writes down an alternate answer of his own creation next to the answer being given. When service starts, and it's time to play the game, Phillip Horchata comes to the stage and announces that he has been on the case of the missing peanut butter and jelly sandwich. He has narrowed it down to two suspects. He calls the two unsuspecting suspects to the stage, and says he has devised a test to see which of the two is GUILTY of the crime. Then, Phillip calls forward one witness at a time, reads their sentence and gives both his/her real answer as well as the alternate answer. The suspects have to guess which answer they think was given by the witness, and which answer is the fake. If the suspect is correct, they earn a point. The first suspect to 3 points has proven their innocence. He or she receives a prize. The guilty suspect is given some kind of consequence. In Elevate, our “guilty” suspect had to wear PB&J bagel handcuffs. Listen to today's podcast for more details about playing this fun game! Free time at camp is a BAD idea for preteens, unless it's done correctly – then it can become a great idea. Preteens are moving from early childhood (where free time at camp is a recipe for disaster) towards adolescence (where free time at camp is a necessary ingredient). How do we balance preteen's felt need for free time and the safety issues involved in giving preteens free time? Today on the podcast, Sean shares 4 ideas how they've made free time work for their preteen camp: The right time-frame (what part of the day and for how long?)
