William D. Higginson: A Canadian Surrealist Visionary William D. Higginson is a Canadian surrealist painter whose evocative works have captivated audiences worldwide. A professional artist since 2007, Higginson explores a vast array of mediums and genres, creating pieces that resonate on both emotional and intellectual levels. His art is held in private collections across the globe and has been featured in numerous prestigious solo exhibitions. Notable showcases include sellout shows at The Space An Art Gallery (2023 and 2017), The Chali Rosso Art Gallery (2019, alongside works by Salvador Dalí), and The Vancouver Club (2016). Higginson's accolades highlight his exceptional talent: he claimed 1st place in the Surrealize International Art Competition (2022), two consecutive Golden Brush First Place awards (2011 and 2012), and an Award of Excellence from the Canadian Federation of Artists (2011). These accomplishments are a testament to his skill, vision, and dedication to his craft. His life story is as compelling as his art. Diagnosed with life-threatening liver failure and leukemia at age 11, Higginson spent three years confronting his mortality. During his hospital stay, a request for pencils and paper marked the beginning of a profound artistic journey. “Living with such conditions changes your perspective on life,” Higginson reflects. This early brush with mortality informs much of his work, often blending humor, surrealism, and deeply personal revelations. Beyond his individual achievements, Higginson has made a significant impact on the art community. As the owner of Impressions Live Art since 2007, he pioneered live painting performances, bringing art to audiences in dynamic and interactive ways. He co-founded Direct2Artist, a global initiative supporting thousands of artists in over 80 countries, and served as its Community Director (2013–2019). His roles as Membership Chair for the Federation of Canadian Artists (2013–2016) and Owner/Operator of Art Battle Vancouver (2013–2014) underscore his commitment to fostering artistic talent and community. Higginson's artistic philosophy centers on emotional engagement and introspection. “My dreams and imagination conjure imagery that I forever strive to render as clear on canvas as in my mind,” he says. This relentless pursuit of creative excellence has made his work a source of inspiration for collectors, art enthusiasts, and aspiring artists alike. Whether mentoring young talents or refining his own craft, Higginson's passion for art remains unyielding. His journey from hospital bed to international acclaim is a testament to the transformative power of creativity and perseverance. Episode 117: Towards an Equitable and Inclusive Future: LGBTQIA+ ArchitectsWhat would an equitable future for LGBTQIA+ people look like? What's the role of architecture in designing an equitable future?Expanding our equity, diversity, and inclusion series, episode 117 explores the perspectives of LGBTQIA+ architects and designers working to create a more equitable future for all. One of the earliest episodes in this series, “Voices from the Future of the Profession,” episode 016, was recorded in 2020. Since that recording date, a number of anti-LGBTQIA+ bills and legislation have been passed across the United States - risking protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. As architects and designers, we believe there is much more we can do to create safe and inclusive policies and spaces in the built environment and within our communities. We've invited leaders to share their stories and discuss what matters most in this moment of change.Guest Moderator:Dedicated to advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and visibility of LGBTQIA+ architects, architecture adjacent, and design professionals, Sarah Nelson-Woynicz, AIA, is the Founder of Pride by Design. As a Project Architect with HKS, Inc in Atlanta, Georgia, Sarah's professional practice focuses on commercial, mixed-use, and multi-family markets, while also amplifying and engaging in HKS' justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion work. Sarah has served on the AIA Atlanta Board of Directors and currently serves at the AIA Young Architects Forum Advisory Committee, Community Director. Guests:Rajas Karnik is a Project Architect with over 20 years of varied project experience in urban design, transportation, commercial and residential buildings. Raj grew up in India, where he was surrounded by a family of artists. As a child, he spent many days in his father's architecture office and felt it was his destiny to follow in his footsteps. He attended the Academy of Architecture in Mumbai, his father's alma mater, before moving to the United States to pursue his Master of Architecture at Texas A&M University. Raj believes a strong team drives a successful project. It's a combination of personality and communication, but mostly it's about respect. Architecture is one of the few professions where you are literally learning new every day—from different building parameters, to changing client needs and goals, and new consultant teams. He feels that you have to form personal relationships and learn from everyone, so treating everyone equally and with respect is most important.Rajas is also the co-founder and Past President of Build Out Alliance, a non-profit organization that promotes and advocates for the LGBTQ+ community within the building design and construction industry. Through this group he helps create visibility for Out LGBTQ professionals and create a safe environment for them to celebrate who they are.Beau Frail is a poet, artist, and architect. Beau is passionate about community-engaged design and advancing equity and justice, including within the LGBTQIA+ community. Beau has served on the Texas Society of Architects (TxA) Board of Directors, where he helped launch the EDI Committee, and on the AIA National Associates Committee. He helped start LGBTQIA+ Alliances at AIA Austin and AIA New York. Beau was honored with the 2020 TxA Presidential Citation and the 2018 AIA Austin Honor Award for Community Service. And it's not impossible that 3,000 miles away, someone will pay for that solution you came up with.By taking that first baby step, you're choosing to embark on your journey, from which you'll learn a lot, whether it becomes successful or not.Listen to this episode with Stephen Green to learn about how he started his career in finance and as an entrepreneur. As a result of living in Portland his whole life, he's become a person that gobbles up relationships and community. Like most entrepreneurs, his journey began with his parents who were both entrepreneurs while he was growing up. While his mom started a tech company, his dad worked for Intel for a long time before starting his own HR company with Intel as their main client. And he's now passed this on to his oldest daughter, who also started a business during the pandemic and now takes him out to dinner.A husband, father, recovering banker, and VC, he's also the founder of PitchBlack, a pitch competition he started in 2015 that highlights black founders in regions across the country who strive for community over competition. It has expanded to include events in Seattle, Austin, and Philadelphia. And to date, 100 founders have pitched their ideas, more than 1,000 people have attended the combined events, and more than $100,000 has been awarded directly to the winning companies. In addition, the Portland winners have raised an additional $40M in funding since 2015. A startup mentor and advisor to portfolio firms at Backstage Capital, he also held positions at these companies: Director of Operations at PENSOLE, COO at A Kids Book About, and Community Director at WeWork. He co-authored A Kids Book About Family and he's a contributor to A Kids Book About Public Speaking by TEDxPortland, a volunteer-driven, nonprofit organization, where speakers and performers share ideas on a wide range of topics to bring people together and spark deep discussion and connection.Connect with Stephen Green:Twitter: @PDXStephenGInstagram: @PDXStephenGPitchBlack: https://www.pitchblackpdx.com/A Kids Book About: https://akidsco.com/Timestamps(02:33) - Icebreaker: How Stephen Green became "The Guy Who Knows Everybody"(04:06) - Icebreaker: What America looks like through the eyes of immigrants(04:53) - Icebreaker: His sneaker collection and his three Grail shoes(07:25) - One of the few things that can give you true gratification(08:07) - The two kinds of people in the world(08:44) - His educational background, career in banking, and working with founders(10:18) - What being part of a community is all about and how you can participate in yours better(12:16) - PitchBlack's success story(13:54) - How PitchBlack started and what to watch out for next(16:53) - Being a Blatino while having his own identity in and out of the home(19:34) - Why he thinks now is the easiest, cheapest, and quickest time to start a business(20:45) - The over-glamorized world of entrepreneurship and what you should be focusing on instead before raising money for your business(23:55) - The core tenets of starting and/or running a business(25:45) - Ways your Mission, Vision, and Values

In that case, you need to listen to this week's episode where Natalie is joined by Kati who is the Community Director for Dyslexia in Adults, as they discuss how people with dyslexia can be more organised. Either you fall into one of these two categories: Being super organised in fear of forgetting something you were just told, or missing an important meeting, to the point of being super early. or, You need to continually reschedule meetings and ask others to repeat the same thing multiple times because you can't remember everything they said. In this episode Natalie and Kati explore what affects organisation as someone with dyslexia, and what can help you to be more organised and navigate difficult situations today. Key topics: Why having dyslexia affects organisation skills, Understanding what it feels like to come across as disorganised, What tips you can implement today to help with being more organised, and How to navigate these difficult situations. I want to thank you for joining me and listening to this podcast! It really helps the podcast and the mission if you rate, review, and share this podcast so that others may find it and get the support they need.
