It might seem that high-achievers with important jobs don't need — or even have time for — activities that bring them joy. But it turns out that finding joy at all stages of life (along with achievement and meaningfulness) is essential to feeling satisfied and being a more effective leader. Harvard Business School professor Leslie Perlow has studied busy executives who do - or do not - find joy and explains the main ways that we can all make the most limited free time, including avoiding passive pursuits and diversifying our activities. Perlow is founder of the Crafting Your Life Project, which created the Life Matrix tool, and coauthor, along with Sari Menster and Salvatore Affinito, of the HBR article "How the Busiest People Find Joy."

We live in a world obsessed with what's new. The latest tech, the next headline, tomorrow's market forecast. But beneath all that noise, some things stay the same. And maybe—just maybe—that's where the real wisdom lies. Born out of a moment of reflection after a volatile April in the financial markets, I found myself returning to Morgan Housel's work, especially his book Same as Ever. It reminded me that the most important lessons aren't about predicting the next move—they're about understanding the truths that don't change. In this episode, I highlight five timeless ideas that I believe are always worth remembering: the constancy of human emotion, the quiet power of compounding, the weight of expectations on our happiness, the surprise of risk, and the challenge of holding two competing ideas—like optimism and pessimism—in balance. These aren't hot takes. They're not meant to be. They're principles that have held up over decades and likely will hold up for decades more. So, if you've been feeling overwhelmed by all that's shifting, I invite you to slow down with me—and focus on what never changes. Kicking off with an introduction to the pressing issue of unpaid labor, Ann points out that while gaining visibility in the legal field is essential, professionals must avoid giving away their expertise without compensation to for-profit companies. Key Takeaways: Paralegals should not provide their expertise to for-profit companies without proper compensation. Paid internships offer valuable experience and reflect a fair exchange for the work interns contribute. Working off the clock could inaccurately reflect the time needed for tasks, possibly affecting the organization and colleagues negatively. Choosing where to volunteer your time should align with the direct professional benefits, such as supporting nonprofit organizations. What do you do when you've got a few hours to kill, a war with birds at home, and a burning desire to play pickleball—but no paddle? In this wildly entertaining episode of The Ben and Skin Show, the crew dives headfirst into a hilarious and relatable conversation about freedom, fatherhood, and the absurdity of everyday life. Ben Rogers opens up about his son's transition from a shoebox-sized dorm in Tuscaloosa to a new house with friends, sparking a nostalgic and laugh-out-loud discussion about college dorm life, co-ed chaos, and the seediest communal bathrooms you've ever heard of.Meanwhile, Skin Wade, KT Turner, and Krystina “Little Baby Cornbread” Ray help Ben weigh his options for how to spend his unexpected free time before picking up his wife from Love Field. Should he go home and face the “bird war” in his front yard and a teenage son dodging summer job responsibilities? Or should he go see Mission Impossible for the fourth time, catch a Wes Anderson flick, or finally embrace his inner pickleball warrior?

What if your checklist is killing connection? You can show intentional appreciation without making people feel like a task. This month on the Joyosity™ Podcast, we've been getting cozy with gratitude. Far beyond the generic “thanks!” you reflexively say cause you were raised with manners. We're talking personalized, purposeful, and strategic appreciation that actually fuels connection and trust at work (and home). In this In Case You Missed It episode, Jenn Whitmer and producer Shelby Merryweather reflect on May's big takeaways — from Enneagram-savvy thank-yous to the surprisingly soulful power of systems. Here's what you'll walk away with: The subtle (but powerful) difference between thankfulness and gratitude — and why only one builds trust. How to give appreciation that's specific to someone's Enneagram style (spoiler: praise what you want to produce). Why “operationalizing your values” (yes, even gratitude) creates more joy and less burnout. And again Shelby brings the question every leader should ask around 16 minutes in.

Time management isn't just another business skill—it's the cornerstone of thriving as a mom entrepreneur. Drawing from my experience juggling four children, multiple businesses, and the ever-present quest for personal fulfillment, this episode delivers actionable strategies to reclaim control of your schedule. The game-changing approach we explore isn't about cramming more into each day. Instead, it's about strategic time-blocking that aligns with your natural rhythms and priorities. I share my personal framework: reserving Mondays and Fridays for family and self-care, while dedicating mid-week days to content creation, client work, and team management. This simple shift transforms scattered productivity into purposeful progress. The MIT Rule (Most Important Tasks) revolutionizes how you approach each day by identifying just three high-impact priorities that deserve your undivided attention. Combined with the Pomodoro Technique and strategic delegation, these methods create breathing room in even the most chaotic schedule. I've helped countless women implement these systems, and the universal response is always: "Why didn't I start this years ago?"Perhaps most importantly, we tackle the challenging skill of saying "no" without guilt—arguably the most underrated productivity hack for overwhelmed entrepreneurs. Remember that protecting your time isn't selfish; it's essential to showing up fully for what matters most. Which of these strategies will you implement first? Allegra also wrote two story collections, “The Family Markowitz” and “Total Immersion,” as well as a novel for younger readers, “The Other Side of the Island.” Allegra's fiction has appeared in “The New Yorker” and has been anthologized in “O.
