Learn how to follow our 4 stage process. https://growyourmathprogram.com Looking to supplement your curriculum with problem based lessons and units? Make Math Moments Problem Based Lessons & UnitsThis episode explores the concept of “expired math rules or math tricks”—rules, tricks, and shortcuts commonly taught in early mathematics that become problematic as students advance in their learning. Based on the article 13 Rules That Expire by Karen S. Karp, Sarah B. Bush, and Barbara J. Dougherty, the discussion highlights how overgeneralizing strategies, using imprecise vocabulary, and relying on procedural tricks can lead to misconceptions. The conversation emphasizes the importance of fostering deep mathematical understanding rather than rote memorization of rules that don't hold true in all contexts.Key Takeaways:Many tricks (e.g., “you can't subtract a bigger number from a smaller one”) work in early math but break down with more advanced concepts like negative numbers.Teaching why math works builds deeper understanding and helps students apply knowledge flexibly, rather than relying on rules that later fail.Imprecise wording (e.g., "always move the decimal when dividing") can cause confusion when students encounter different representations of numbers.Encouraging reasoning and sense-making allows students to adapt their thinking to new problems, rather than getting stuck when a memorized rule no longer applies.By recognizing these expired rules, educators can modify instruction to prioritize reasoning and problem-solving over rote tricks.Show NotesLove the show? Area and perimeter was one of my favorite units to teach. I enjoyed helping students make real-world connections to what they were learning, and they enjoyed imagining that they were planting a garden or painting a bedroom wall. However, this unit came with its fair share of struggles. In my experience, area and perimeter taught in isolation were simple concepts for most students. They began to confuse the two concepts when they got to word problems, mainly because the words area and perimeter were never included in the word problems. Instead, they had to rely on context clues to determine whether to find the area or the perimeter. This was something I embedded into my lessons from the start! This week, I share my favorite teaching tips and ideas for the first three lessons in my area and perimeter unit on perimeter, area, and area of combined rectangles. I share helpful ways to teach students conceptual understanding and creative ways to embed other review skills into your small group activities. In addition, you'll hear a clever way to help students determine whether to multiply or divide when converting units of measure in the Teaching Tip of the Week. Teaching Tip 343 | “Plain Speaking - Introduction” | Malcolm Cox Introduction How would you like to be more effective in your preaching and teaching? If, like me, you want to grow as a speaker of God's word, then I have a resource for you.  It's a new year, so it's time for a new series of Teaching Tips. In a change from the normal approach I will be recording 2-minute tips based on chapters from the book, “Plain speaking: How to preach and teach effectively" by David Bercot. From the rear cover of the book: “Although many books have been written about preaching and teaching, most of them are addressed to seminary-trained pastors. They're not aimed at the churches that don't use professionally schooled ministers. That's what is different about this book. The New Testament Christians had no seminaries, but they raised up effective preachers and teachers. The Holy Spirit can use ordinary Christian men today to preach and teach just as He did back in the first century. Plain Speaking takes the reader through all of the steps of developing and delivering effective sermons and devotional messages. Some of the topics covered are: • Choosing the right topic • Building your sermon • Where to find illustrations • Organising your material • Preparing rousing introductions and conclusions • Making eye contact with your listeners • Controlling speaker's fright • How to make your devotionals special • Pet peeves of listeners Although packed with practical information, Plain Speaking is written in an easy-to-read, conversational style.” Conclusion Each week will give you something practical you can implement in your next lesson. Why not bookmark these recordings and set time aside to listen to them? After all, it's got to be worth two minutes of your time, hasn't it?  Next week: It doesn't take a seminary education to preach Consider joining AIM UK&Ireland to develop your understanding of Scripture: https://aimukandireland.com/.
