The world's undergoing a serious chip shortage, and its having a negative impact on businesses everywhere. Automakers like Toyota are cutting their production forecasts by 40% based on the tightness of supply. Appliance makers like Whirlpool are claiming "the perfect storm" of supply issues have caused them to slash projections by around 10%. And Internet of Things providers like Synaptics are bringing in customers and quite literally begging to fulfill their existing customer orders. The extreme tightness of supply, coupled with the growing demand of high-performance chips, is serving as a catalyst of epic proportions. The semiconductor industry is undergoing one of the most significant expansion phases in decades. Intel, Samsung, Taiwan Semiconductor, and several other manufacturers are plowing tens of billions of dollars into expanding their chipmaking capacity. What should investors make of all of this? Is this an opportunity to bank on a wave of upcoming new semiconductor business? Or is this simply too-much, too fast -- in what's already known as a highly cyclical industry? To answer those questions, we've brought in a semiconductor expert. Robert Quinn has worked for decades in providing capital equipment to the semiconductor industry. He is now a high-performance contributor to LinkedIn, where he posts four times per days and his articles have been read nearly 2 million times year-to-date. In this exclusive interview, 7investing CEO Simon Erickson and Robert describe why Intel is so ambitiously expanding its chipmaking capacity within the United States and what its new contract with the Department of Defense could mean for its business. Robert also explains why Samsung might be building a new fab in Austin, what Taiwan Semiconductor's price hike will mean for consumer electronics, and how much longer investors should expect the supply shortage to last. The two also discuss several new chip designs and process technology improvements, such as the RISC-V open-source architecture, single nanometer nodes, FGPAs, and quantum computing. Robert also shares his thoughts about wafer fabrication equipment manufacturers, and why the status quo will greatly benefit Applied Materials. Publicly-traded companies mentioned in this interview include AMD, Apple, Applied Materials, Intel, Samsung, and Taiwan Semiconductor. 7investing's advisors or its guests may have positions in the companies mentioned. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/7investing/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/7investing/support

That's So Second Millennium

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 12, 2021 46:58

An intriguing interview with a business school professor from Paul's alma mater, Anjan Thakor of the Washington University in St. Louis Olin Business School. The point of departure for this episode is Prof. Thakor's book of the same title written with Dr. Bob Quinn, and the book was launched as an analysis of why Dr. Quinn left a prestigious faculty position at the University of Michigan to go start a church in Australia. The book and our interview discuss what seems as if it should be common sense: people perform better when they believe what they're doing has a higher purpose than extracting paychecks and profit. Yet this common sense observation is now counter to decades of economic orthodoxy, both in the "practical" world and in academia, which focus on evaluating ways for employers to control and coerce employees using the tools of the market system. And it's not entirely surprising, since in many ways human nature is always poised to devolve into this style of interaction. Listen in and, if you're anywhere near as intrigued by this work as I was, read their book for more. Thakor co-authored The Economics of Higher Purpose: Eight Counterintuitive Steps for Creating a Purpose-Driven Organization with Robert Quinn, business professor emeritus at the University of Michigan. Thakor referred to a University of Michigan study of call-center workers. They came away with a higher sense of purpose—and effectiveness—after talking with students who had received scholarships based on fund-raising efforts in which the workers were participating. If you change a worker's mental map for seeing their job, this affects their performance. Authenticity requires a business leader's believable commitment to—and passion about—the organization's higher purpose, Prof. Thakor said. He also referred to insights from Rabbi Jonathan Sacks about the importance of societal and organizational motivation stemming from a sense of covenant, not merely contract. Covenant entails a sense of shared purpose. Noted business executive Bob Chapman says 88 percent of American workers say they want a sense of higher purpose but don't feel it is integrated in their work life. Thakor said his own research shows that employees whose companies have a sense of purpose are more likely to describe a sense of purpose in their lives—a spillover effect. The commitment to purpose must be top-down. Then, it cascades through the organization if you help employees learn and absorb what it means for them and their job, Thakor said. Harvard Business Review had a special issue on the importance of a sense of purpose.

Robert E. Quinn has spent the last 40 years doing research, publishing, teaching, consulting, and speaking to more than half of the Fortune 500. He is the Margaret Elliot Tracy Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan, Ross School of Business.  His research and writing focuses on purpose, leadership, culture and change. He is one of the leaders in the field of Positive Organizational Scholarship and a cofounder of the Center for Positive Organizations at the University of Michigan. He has published 18 books.  His book, Deep Change is a long-term best seller and has been used across the planet. His book, The Best Teacher in You won the Ben Franklin Award designating it the best book in education. His latest book is The Positive Organization: Breaking Free of Conventional Cultures, Constraints and Beliefs. His next book will be The Economics of Higher Purpose: Eight Counter Intuitive Steps for Creating a Purpose Driven Organization. He is particularly known for his work on the competing values framework which has been used by thousands of organizations.  His paper, Moments of Greatness: Entering the Fundamental State of Leadership, was selected by the Harvard Business Review as one of the ten Must Reads On Managing Yourself. Deep change is needed. Otherwise it is a slow death. “Knowledge is the ungrateful child of learning.” We go to great lengths to deny the need for change. Positive organization scholarship. The problem with thinking “I am powerless to try to change our system“ We have evidence all around us that what we are thinking is wrong. If one teacher is doing it, that means it's possible. The question is “What's real?” The principal's reference point is the middle of the curve. The way you change things is you begin to learn from excellence. We are looking for meaningful life, but something blocks us, that's fear. Principals believe that their most valued contribution is to prevent conflict. Leadership is about creating conflict. Turn it into transformative cooperation. Realization of potential. Great teachers vs. good teachers. 4 variables: idealized influence, individualized concern, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation (using inquiry to stimulate change)! Love of learning transcends other challenges. People not marching to the drum of convention. We are all subject to the slow death. What result do I want to create? You've linked your identity Create the future that doesn't yet exist. Each failure is a step to find out your potential. Purpose driven Life. The moment you commit to a purpose, you moralized your life. When you find out who you are, you find your true character. Your best self begins to emerge. Fail, fail, fail, then succeed. You develop transformative power. If you want to be a really good teacher… No matter what they say or do, every student wants to learn, every students wants to succeed. When you break that code, everything changes. Animate a community - put together things they want, nurture them, and then you can take it to the next level. Henry Gradillas How to be a transformative principal? Sit down, and ask, what result do I want to create? Why am I on the earth? What's my purpose in life? When I die how will the planet be different because I'm here. Am I internally connected? Am I other focused? Am I externally open? That was a remark that Quinn pushed back on. Alaina Getzenberg of the Charlotte Observer then joined the show to preview the Bears-Panthers game Sunday. 2020 has been a headline year, dominated by news of a global pandemic, US elections, Brexit and China’s rise to power. On the business front, Corporate Purpose has emerged as the theme of the year. It comes on the back of an August 2019 statement released by the US-based Business Roundtable, calling into question the primacy of shareholders. For the past 50 years, corporations have operating on the principle that the only responsibility of business is to generate profits for its shareholders. With the world in such a muddle, that core idea is coming into question. If issues like climate change, inequality, and social justice aren’t addressed, there’s growing concern that societies everywhere will come face-to-face with collapse. Corporations – so say pundits – are best positioned to make a difference.Helping companies make that shift so that purpose and profits might co-exist is the work of my two guests this episode. Robert Quinn and Anjan Thakor are US-based professors. Together, they wrote a book entitled: The Economics of Higher Purpose: Eight Counter-intuitive Steps for Creating a Purpose Driven Organization. I spoke with them by phone recently. We touched on the traditional employer-employee contract, the new operating paradigm, and what it takes to bring a purpose agenda to life.

The Bears have a new starting quarterback, and Dan Wiederer and Brad Biggs waste no time breaking down what the change means to the offense. If the second half of the win over Atlanta is any indication, Foles should be able to run the offense more smoothly, get the ball out more quickly and allow the Bears to run a more complex scheme. As for the defense, figure extra time will be spent in meetings this week to address mistakes made against the Falcons (cough, shoddy tackling, cough). Good thing for the Bears Akiem Hicks had a monster game, taking advantage of Atlanta zeroing in on Khalil Mack and Robert Quinn. Dan and Brad also look ahead to what should be a telling six-game stretch before crowning Foles’ biggest passes from his Bears debut.
