Here we discuss the pioneers  that were influential in shaping EDM to what it is today. In this latest segment we are featuring Chicago Group, Phuture. Formed in 1985, Phuture's members were - Earl "Spanky" Smith Jr, Nathaniel Pierre Jones aka DJ Pierre and Herbert "Herb J" Jackson. Together they crafted a unique style of music which would later be known as acid house. The groups defining release was  "Acid Tracks". Take a listen to it here. “Acid Tracks” by Phuture was released in 1987 and was considered the first acid house record. Phuture was instrumental in launching acid house music and  transforming it from an underground sound to a mainstream movement during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Gamma Intel (@gammaintelligence) is a sonic explorer who can rewire your brain with his left-of-centre approach to sound and rhythm. The Dutchman is a master of contrast between the dark corners of the dance floor and moments of emotional light. He draws on broken beats, acid, techno and electro but skews them through his own lens on labels like brokntoys, Pinkman and Mechatronica. He recently co-founded the Nerve Collect label with friend Identified Patient, and will release his E.M EP there at the end of March. Gamma's love of creative sampling and meticulous sound design carries over into the music he plays in his sets. This week's mix is perfect proof as it twists and turns on contorted basslines and muscular drum patterns. It's an intense and futuristic listen that goes through moments of all-out hand-in-the-air dance floor joy and heads down marching to slick jungle workouts and dystopian worlds of bass. Amsterdam may be considered the main musical hub in the Netherlands but Rotterdam definitely gives it a run for its money. The port city in the south of the country is the base of independent radio station Operator as well as being home to label and radio shop Pinkman Records who have been responsible for a few of our favourite releases in recent years. Gamma Intel has been closely affiliated with both institutions, as a resident on Operator and as a label mate for Pinkman with his release Motives & Methods earlier this year. We first caught wind of him via his release for London-based electro imprint Brokntoys, his debut EP in fact, which introduced us to his machine-driven sound; a heady blend of electro, EBM and raw electronics. We invited him to give us a taste of what Gamma Intel is all about. Buckle up, this one's a barnstormer...
