You know what time it is! It's time to wake up with Elle. Or, if you have a better sleep schedule than her, you can listen back to this whenever you wish. We started out with some instrumental heavy long tunes from Bowery Electric, Eiko Ishibashi, Phuture and Phuture. For your last hour, we have some guitar music from distraction4ever, Vista Kicks and the Marching Girls.
Confident in hosting their own talk, Bibi and Dani addressed the topic of diversity and inclusivity within the music industry. "We were searching for our own voice." The Chicago artist talks about pioneering the sound of acid house and the spirit of experimentation in early dance music. The Chicago-based Nathaniel Pierre Jones—AKA DJ Pierre—may be best known for forming the "squelch" we now call acid. When he and his friends Spanky and Herb J picked up a TB-303 in a pawn shop, they captured the sound of the knobs being turned as a pattern started to run. While this wasn't how the instrument was intended to be used, they were enthralled by the result, reproducing it and releasing it as an EP called Acid Tracks under the name Phuture in 1987. The result was the birth of the acid house era and a new, international musical craze. In this RA Exchange recorded live at International Music Summit in Ibiza, Jones retraces the acid craze and the nature of experimentation and risk-taking more generally. In his view, there's a marked absence of this mindset in contemporary dance music as many producers have become accustomed to using sample packs, presets and generally operating within workflows that stymie originality. At the end of the interview, he raises important questions around if and how the music being released today enhances our lives, as well as what a truly transcendent and mutually supportive industry could look like. Welcome back guys, here on ESOA Podcast. Unfortunately, once again my guest for this episode cancelled just before the end. This immediately inspired me to record a musical special for you. I decided on a Chicago House and Techno special. Alongside Detroit, Chicago is clearly an important cornerstone. Without it, techno and house would not exist in their current form. Think about the impact that tracks like Move your Body or Acid Tracks still have today. Frankie Knuckles began playing early electronic productions back in 1977 in the then newly opened, rather run-down but well-equipped Warehouse club. A sound that continued to develop into later house and techno, with great, unforgotten names such as Marshall Jefferson, Larry Heard, Adonis, Tyree Cooper, Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Frankie Knuckles, Steve "Silk" Hurley, DJ Pierre, Phuture, Mike Dunn, K-Alexi Bad Boy Bill, "Fast" Eddie Smith, Ron Hardy and Derrick Carter made history. The sound was released on labels such as DJ International, Dance Mania, Jack Trax, Underground Records and Trax Records. Friends, let this sound inspire you for the next two and a half hours. Have fun with ESOA Podcast 072 by myself, Thomas Schubert. Thanks for tuning in. Vancouver record label Nerve Wracking Collections has just released their latest EP Coulrophobia, a collaborative concept project that includes Vancouver synthpunk bands, Phuture Memoriez and Jibbernaut. The concept involved choosing a theme and releasing a 4 song split EP with another band. This was an opportunity for NWC to expand and have many artists join their collective. Coulrophobia is the first split EP release derived from this project which revolves around the fear of clowns. The guidelines were kept simple so that each band could make their songs their own. They involved creating two new songs that followed the lyrical theme and a desire to release the EP along with a co-headline live show. Phuture Memoriez is a dark synth-pop-punk band from Vancouver BC and is composed of Marc Blaquiere and Jessica Blaquiere, while Jibbernaut consists of local punks “Gears” and “Hammer”. The songs on the EP are short, fast, visceral blasts that are rooted in early punk and hardcore and have elements of Kraut rock and foundational industrial music. Each track is an explosion, an expression of internal turmoil and angst against discordant hooks and symphonic feedback. “Gears”, singer of Jibbernaut, reflected on the inception of the EP, “When Phuture Memoriez approached us about the Coulrophobia project it appealed instantly. There's something inherently terrifying about clowns. The clown archetype has inhabited the cultural psyche for centuries and the idea of someone transformed into a painted/costumed character for the purpose of amusement holds within it the possibility for unfathomable darkness. We performed a week-long ceremony in our Vancouver compound as preparation for writing these two songs. After those seven days of fasting and sacrificial offerings our namesake, the demon Jibbernaut, appeared holding the pale severed head of a clown in its claws. We got to work immediately in a frenzied state of inspiration and 48 hours later we had “Clown School” and “No One's Laughing Now”. Then we ordered deep fried wontons and tantan noodles and slept for three days.” D I S C O V E R TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jibbernautband?lang=ko-KR Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/phuturememoriez/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/people/Jibbernaut/100092412352065/ Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/phuturememoriez/?hl=en Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/jibber_naut/ Bandcamp: https://phuturememoriez1.bandcamp.com/music Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@nervewrackingcollections5277/featured Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/0xX7HI6zFKn6Y5FDKwN8K9?si=xjSBNimsTteBzSS63qBzWA&nd=1 Go to BETTERHELP.com/apologue for confidential online counselling.use the code word Apologue for a 7 day free trial Pledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca/shop Go get the 1 hour mini Documentary on Lowest of the Low's Classic Album Shakespeare my Butt at https://thelowdoc.gumroad.com/l/SMB
One of the most charming DJs in the business. A musical ambassador and a veteran of acid house, a champion of techno, a dance music pioneer, label owner, King of Ibiza – you name it, Carl's been there and done it, never losing sight of his passions – playing music, breaking tunes and celebrating life. **TRACKLIST** * How It Makes You Feel (Original Mix) - Carl Cox, Nicole Moudaber * Speed Trials On Acid (feat. Dan Diamond) [LF SYSTEM Remix] (Extended Mix) - Fatboy Slim, Carl Cox, Dan Diamond * Get What You Paid 4 (Marco Bailey Remix) * Inferno (Original Mix) - Carl Cox, Reinier Zonneveld, Christopher Coe * Nexus (Foamo Remix) * Nocturnal (Original Mix) - Carl Cox, Christopher Coe, Cox and Coe * The Player (Onionz Remix) * The Latin Theme Feat. Remix) * Sand, Moon & Stars (Eats Everything Remix) * I Want You (Forever) (Tribute Mix) * PURE (Brennen Grey Remix) * Moroccan Chant (Rory Marshall Remix) It was at the age of 15 that Carl bought a set of turntables and began working as a mobile DJ. Disco was the first music that captivated him but by the early 80s Cox had moved on to playing the same music as other young London DJs – rare groove, New York hip-hop and electro. He was perfectly placed to hear Chicago house music in its earliest forms, and when the epic ‘Acid Trax' by Phuture (a.k.a. DJ Pierre) came out in early '87. “It was then that I thought, ‘This is it,' says Carl. “I would do my parties, and I'd play old rare groove and hip hop and soul and I would say ‘Right you've got to hear this Phuture track' and people would just stop and listen.” As a founder of the sound, Carl rode the exploding British rave scene. He played the opening night of Danny Rampling's legendary Shoom, co-promoted The Project with Paul Oakenfold, where he also DJ'd and did the sound system. He held a residency at the Zap Club in Brighton and at the Sunrise rave in 1988, hooked up a third turntable for his dawn-breaking set, got 15,000 people back on their feet, and established a personal rep for three-deck wizardry. The next step was to make music, and Carl's 1991 debut single for Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto label, ‘I Want You,' reached Number 23 in the national UK charts and gave Carl his first Top of the Pops appearance. Two more singles also made the charts. But Carl was a reluctant pop star and as the masses moved onto fluffy house and trance, and the hardcore created jungle, Cox retreated into the club world that had nurtured him, and instead embraced the underground sounds of techno. “Techno drives home somewhere,” he says of his core music. “It takes you to an element of surprise, not knowing where you're going. It's scary but wonderful at the same time.” Carl's classic releases include his 1995 mix CD, ‘F.A.C.T,‘ which became a techno benchmark, selling over 250,000 copies, and the 1996 EP ‘Two Paintings and a Drum,‘ which again broke the British top 30. Alongside Carl's ‘Ultimate Music Management' company, which counted Josh Wink and Laurent Garnier among 27 clients, there was the Ultimatum record label, for which Carl recorded his third top 30 UK single, ‘Sensual Sophis-ti-cat.' In 2005, Carl's third album, ‘The Second Sign' caused a stir across Europe and reached number 3 in Spain's national chart. Also gaining critical acclaim was ‘Dirty Bass,' a collaboration with Christian Smith, and the funky ‘Give Me Your Love', both released on 23rd Century Records, an outlet for his own burgeoning production output. Carl formed his own label, Intec Records, in 1999, scoring a series of underground hits and enjoying eight years at the forefront of electronic music. After its closure in 2006, Carl was still inundated with new music, finally deciding to re-launch the label as Intec Digital in 2010, and it's been a triumphant return, thanks to exclusives from some of the biggest names in techno. Intec Digital was also the home for Carl's 6th studio album, ‘All Roads Lead To the Dancefloor,' released to critical acclaim in 2011. In 2013 Carl re-launched his seminal Pure Intec series, nine years after the hugely successful original ‘Pure Intec.' Pure Intec 3 followed in 2016 and this year sees the release of the 4th installment in the series – Pure Intec 4. “I've always been about nurturing artists and supporting new talent,” says Carl. “Sometimes a release gets missed, or overlooked. Pure Intec is a great way to collate the best of our output and celebrate it.” And of course Carl's name cannot be mentioned without Ibiza. His legendary Ibiza residency at Space came to an end in 2016, after an unbelievable 15 consecutive years. Since 2001 Carl helped establish Space as one of the biggest clubs in the world. With carefully thought out line ups, and as much emphasis on new talent as big names, Carl always strived to keep his night at the forefront of Ibiza clubbing making it one of the most successful residencies in Ibiza history. Starting out in 2001 with just 6 nights, his residency grew and adapted as the club did, so for Carl it was only right to end his residency as Space itself closed its doors. And what a way to go out. Carl's final 15 week season was his biggest ever, with every single night selling out, heralded by fans and critics alike as a triumphant finale to a piece of dance history. In summer 2018 Carl caused huge excitement, when it was announced he had joined forces with Space's founder Pepe Rosello, general manager Juan Arenas and Ibiza promoter Dave Browning and that together they were working on bringing back the legendary club to Ibiza. “Space club Ibiza has always been my home for the last 20 years,” said Carl. “To pave the new way for the future of Space is really exciting, and now forming a partnership with Pepe, Juan, and Dave Browning to run the newly-formed team, it feels solid in the way that we are a family team, and I feel we can bring everything back to where it belongs.” Those plans are still very much under way, although Carl admits their hands are tied currently in terms of opening a new club on the island. “There's a protocol in place beyond our control, but we still 100% want to do it and I'm confident it will happen. Until then we're concentrating on keeping the Space flag flying with some great events across the world.” These include an upcoming Steel Yard London Carl Cox Presents Space Ibiza, a special Space stage at Tomorrowland and various Studio 338 parties, with more Space events being planned. Ibiza is still priority for Carl, where he has returned to play every summer since Space's closure, carefully picking and choosing which nights he'll play. He now has his roaming club series ‘One Night Stand' which returns in summer 2019 with two nights at DC-10 and he's enjoying being back at Privilege Ibiza, as part of Resistance, acting as curator and headliner for another four parties this year. On top of that he'll be joining Nic Fanciulli for two nights at Ushuaia and playing Pacha's closing party with Marco Carola. In my early days of playing Ibiza it wasn't alien for me to play all the clubs,” says Carl. “I had the opportunity to do my own night at Space and define my sound in one club. It's now nice to be able to share the love with some of the other clubs.” Carl continues to be one of most in demand DJs in the world, with countless club dates and festival appearances every year. After 12 years delivering his Carl Cox & Friends stage at Ultra, Carl is now proud to be ambassador for the Resistance parties, for Ultra worldwide. He also now has his own concept party Pure – started with Richie McNeill and Eric Powell, and which turns five this year. Built on the idea of taking things back to basics, Carl put the music first and foremost for some no nonsense, no frills techno parties, which grows by the year, with this year's Pure events being the biggest to date. “Pure is my thing. I've nurtured it from day one, striving to bring the best purveyors of techno together to deliver it in its purest form, and it works.” On top of the Australian events, Carl has taken Pure to Ibiza and the UK, with further Pure events planned for New York, Montreal and Prague. Carl became an official partner of Babylon festival in Australia in 2018, a role he continued this year, helping curate the lineup, the event's ethos, and jumping onboard as Babylon's headline act. Carl also has a long history with Burning Man, having performed at the annual event in Black Rock City since 2008. Carl started his Playground camp as a way to celebrate all that Burning Man is and as a way to give back to a culture that he loves. It started small and most who landed in the camp that first year were those just passing by to get someplace else, but the music and vibe pulled them in. From that humble start it has steadily grown over the years and in a very organic way because the energy, music and people are what makes Playground so special. On top of all this Carl has also found the time to launch another label, Awesome Soundwave (ASW) with label partner, Christopher Coe, AKA Digital Primate. Launched in May 2018, the label is geared towards artists who make and perform their music live and has signed six artists so far. “My idea was to create a label where artists who can make and perform their music live, have a stable where they can be themselves and be able to create the music without any boundaries.” He is also still at the forefront of producing music himself. He now has his own state of the art studio in Australia which enables him to work production anytime he's not on the road. Carl's remix of Ninetoes ‘Finder,' went through the roof when released last year and he recently made his return to Circus Recordings for the menacing ‘Dark Alleys.' He's returned to the track that helped start it all back in 1987, remixing DJ Pierre's ‘Acid Track', for Pierre's upcoming 35 years of DJing celebration release. Elsewhere look out for Carl's masterful touch on remixes of Russell Small's ‘It Is What It Is,' Purple Disco Machine's ‘Body Funk' and a new mix of his own 2000 release ‘Dr Funk', out on Bush Records. And don't forget Carl's other major passion, his beloved motorsports. Having had a love of cars and motorbikes ever since he was a child, Carl has collected cars and bikes most of his life, with over 100 in his current collection. In 2013 Carl started Carl Cox Motorsport, which has quickly grown internationally with the incorporation of various teams and styles of motor racing. From the NZ & World road race Sidecar championships, The Ducati Tri-Options Cup in the UK, to the Post Classic motorcycles and V8 Drag racing in Australia, the teams continue to achieve amazing results with multiple lap records, race wins, championship placings and personal goals being reached. “To be able to utilize what I have learned from the marketing and brand side of my DJ career and to apply it to my passion for motor sport is a great thing. And it's already made a difference. I never thought the motor team would grow like this, it's been unbelievable. It's a huge passion for me and I'm dedicated to continue making it a success.” To those wondering how he finds the time for all of this, he says he's in his element, and just making the most of life and of the amazing opportunities he has. “There's still a lot more to come from me. There's still a lot more water in the well.”

054: Roy Davis Jr. Roy Davis Jr. is a DJ, producer and label owner that has been part of the dance music community since the very beginning. Growing up in Chicago, the birthplace of House music, Roy was surrounded by the sounds of this new genre; whether it was living down the street from DJ Pierre or hearing Ron Hardy tapes blasting out of boomboxes - the possibilities drove a young Roy to start experimenting with equipment and this eventually led him to become a part of legendary outfit Phuture, as well as working with icons such as Marshall Jefferson. Arguably most well known for his massive single 'Gabriel,' a foundational track in the UK Garage scene, Roy always brings a soulful edge to his sets and is looking forward to celebrating some key milestones in 2023 - including the digitisation and re-release of his entire Undaground Therapy Muzik (UTM) record label, featuring tracks from: Men From The Nile, Turquoise Colored French Tourists, Nico Lahs and Al Zanders.FOLLOW US Instagram: @houseculturenetSpotify: HouseCulture - Perfect PlaylistOnline: www.houseculture.net|| Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseculture. Robin began discovering Techno music in the late 80s, listening to artists like Phuture, Armando, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Blake Baxter, The Wizard, etc… At the same time, he began getting involved in organizing some of the first Techno parties in The Netherlands. When the European Techno/House scene exploded in the mid-90s (and creative development/progression stopped), he decided that it was time for a change and started to search for new challenges in Techno music. In 1998, he decided to take things to a new level and started composing Techno music for himself. In 2002, he felt that the time was there to begin playing his own, somewhat Minimal Techno music in front of live audiences at Techno parties. Since then, Robin's own music became increasingly mature, and he has since then performed live at a lot of parties, with ever-growing success.
Malaysian plant-based meat company Phuture aims to tackle the growing global food shortage issue by offering a nutritious alternative. CEO Jack Yap and CMO Annabelle Co-Martinent discuss if the future could be meat-free.
FINGERS, MAURICE, LIL LOUIS, FAST EDDIE, TYREE, ADONIS, FARLEY JACKMASTER FUNK, MIKE DUNN, ALASKA Y DINARAMA, ORBITAL, 808 STATE, A GUY CALLED GERALD, JOLLY ROGER, D MOB, HUMANOID, BABY FORD, HARDFLOOR, PLASTIKMAN y JOSH WINK.
The decade-spanning career of Roy Davis Jr. is intrinsically intertwined with the history of house music. As one of the defining voices of Chicago's underground, he's worked both behind the decks and behind-the-scenes. From handling Strictly Rhythm's A&R sector in the '90s to joining seminal production crew Phuture to launching his own Undaground Therapy Muzik label, Davis Jr. isn't just a veteran but a compendium of dance music knowledge. Daft Punk cites him as an influence while the likes of Disclosure, Zed Bias and Waajeed have sought him out for collaborations. He may be best known for his 1998 single Gabriel with Peven Everett—now a garage anthem on both sides of the Atlantic—but his discography and DJ sets go well beyond club hits. Weaving in soul, gospel, disco, techno and acid into a deep house framework, he marries raw funk, plush melodies, hypnotic synths and stripped-down arrangements. All these elements are beautifully captured on his RA Podcast. Moving from a state of eyes-closed bliss to body-moving grooves, the near two-hour session is as grounding as it is free-floating. Spiritual, sensual and tightly mixed, it's a lesson in multifaceted house music.

Today's Lost in Music on the Breakfast Show had a bit of a twist. Instead of focusing on a genre, theme or decade of music, tom focused on the sound of the Roland TB303 bassline synthesizer for international 303 appreciation day (the 30th of March) The TB303 is by now a legendary instrument as it is responsible for the sound behind some of the biggest dance music records in history and has been used widely in pop music since its release in 1982 This wasnt always the case though. The TB303 was originally designed to replicate the sound of bass guitar so that it could replace bass players in a band. It turned out that it did a pretty terrible job of imitating a bass guitar though and pretty quickly these machines ended up stocking the shelves in second hand shops all over the world. Despite it's shortcomings at replicating a bass guitar, the 303 has a unique sound character of its own. This was first put to use on record by Indian musician Charanjit Singh who is credited as the first person to combine a 303 with electronic beats in 1982, predating the birth of the Genre Acid House that would make the 303 world famous by 5 years. Acid House arrived though when a TB303 ended up in the hands of some boundary pushing young kids in Chicago who had a group called Phuture. They realized that the 303 could make a pretty interesting and quite addictive squelching sound if you pushed it to its limits and in doing so they created what is widely understood to be the first acid house tune Acid Tracks. in 1988 a DJ called A Guy Called Gerald used the TB303 to amazing effect in creating Voodoo Ray, a track which is considered one of the most popular and influential Acid House tunes and which introduced the Acid House sound to the masses in the UK. From its initial rejection as an instrument that doesn't do what it supposed to do, through its adoption as the source sound of one of dance music's most influential genres, The TB303 went on to be used widely by producers of Pop Music over the years. It can be heard in classic pop hits such as Orange Juice's 'Rip it Up And Start Again,' and modern pop music by the likes of Tame Impala in their track 'Breath Deeper' and Aaliyah in her track 'Try Again'. We hope you enjoyed this look back at the legacy of this peculiar and influential instrument on this week's 'Lost In music'.

Mumbai-based Udai Sharma aka Maddeof manages to pick up the genre of lo-fi house and dust its mess off to contextualize it perfectly for the COVID-19 lockdowns, using the time when the dancefloors were shut to redefine his sound and utilising the style to offer some of the most effective releases of the period which offered familiar rhythms but with more laidback moods befitting to the new and constrained listening habits. The producer, DJ and audio engineer however doesn't primarily stick to his now characteristic style for this Wild City Mix, jumping instead between different guises of house music. After slipping through some more hard-hitting classic sounds from the more iconic numbers like Paco Osuna's remix of Phuture's 'Acid Track' and rarer cuts picked from the crevices of the web, Maddeof begins to slip into moodier selections post the flamboyant zaniness of Simon Mattson's 'Thug Life'. A tinge of the lo-fi appears with the atmospheric samples on 'Rowdy Boy' by Enzu Leep and Medu, but soon enough the mix shifts to the gospel-inspired disco house of Javi Alvadi & THC – never staying in space for too long, flowing instead with a sole focus on the core energy of house music. With nutrition and a focus on the environmental impact of food coming to define the zeitgeist of this generation's food systems, there's been a lot of interest and money vested into finding alternatives to meat consumption.
