Mason Paine - 0:01: Summer travel season is right around the corner and Google's chief technology and trends expert Craig Ewer joins me to share travel hacks and explain how AI tools can help make planning your trip a whole lot easier. Thanks for joining me Craig. Craig Ewer - 0:15: Glad to be here. Thank you. Mason Paine - 0:16: Tell me, what have been some of the trends when it comes to travel so far? Craig Ewer - 0:21: Well, a lot of people are looking for help with their travel plans on Google and in fact we've seen a number of all time high searches this year. One of those is kids passports. So it looks like people are really interested in traveling abroad with their families, also couples trips. So romantic getaways seem to be top of mind. We've also seen that cheap summer vacations are trending right now. So I do think people are interested in traveling on a budget. Mason Paine - 0:45: Has road trips been something that's pinging high? Craig Ewer - 0:48: You know, we always see lots of interest in road trip and in fact there are several national parks that are seeing a lot of searches. Yellowstone, Yosemite and Glacier national park are all top trending national parks this year. Mason Paine - 1:01: Now when it comes to any type of traveling, you have to plan something. Is there any particular way that Google helps you plan for these trips? Craig Ewer - 1:09: Yes. You know, you can actually go right to Google, search and type in something like create an itinerary for Costa Rica that's four days long and has a focus on nature. And you're going to get right in the search results an AI generated sample itinerary that'll lay out day by day suggestions for where to eat, places to see, tours you can take. And we show all of that on a map. So it's really easy to click around and see photos, reviews, that type of thing. And then from there it's really up to you how you want to make the trip your own. Mason Paine - 1:37: Is it something that you've tried recently? I'm just curious if you have experience with it. Craig Ewer - 1:42: Definitely. You know, I'm actually looking to go to Mexico around Labor Day and Oaxaca in particular. I said I'm going to Oaxaca for about four or five nights. I'm really interested in food and the local culture and immediately I got a bunch of great suggestions. And then from there, you know, you click out these websites, these travel blogs, you can get really great expert advice that way. Another tool that's worth mentioning is Gemini, which is Google's personal AI assistant and that's more of a chat experience and you can get really specific there with your questions as well. So one thing I love to do is get advice on my packing list, you can say, I'm going to these different locations over the course of a week, let's say. And then say, hey, you know, tell me what should I pack to account for all the different weather I might encounter? And we'll give you all of that advice right in one easy place. So it makes it really simple to get inspiration and help with your planning. Mason Paine - 2:31: I'm so happy you talked about Gemini. What's the difference between Gemini and Google Assistant? Craig Ewer - 2:36: Gemini is really AI powered. Right. It's the future of what we're doing in terms of giving you assistance with AI. So Gemini does have the ability to interact with voi...

Mason Paine – 0:01: The month of April has come to an end and Google trends expert Charity Mende speaks about this past month's top trends. Thanks for joining me, Charity. Charity Mhende – 0:09: Thanks for having me. Mason Paine – 0:11: So tell me, month of April, what was all trending? Charity Mhende – 0:14: The month was super busy and of course, one of my favorite topics that's been trending is marathons. The past weekend in New York, people just ran the Brooklyn half. So we've seen a lot of interest in topics around sports. One of the top trending questions was, do people who run marathons know they don't have to? That was the top trending related question. And actually people were also searching for things like do people walk marathons? Do people run marathons without stopping? So it was all about the sports this past month. Mason Paine – 0:49: I'm curious, was there any particular shoe that was trending for marathons? I'm guessing you can't just use anything. Charity Mhende – 0:55: Well, people actually come to Google every day to search different topics and, you know, marathons and running was definitely one of them. But one of the interesting ones that was also coming up is gifting. People were searching for lots of different apparel related gifting searches in the run up to things like Mother's Day. So one of the things that I loved seeing was that people were searching for things like Mother's Day gift ideas, graduation gift ideas, and wedding present gift ideas all spiking by 5,000%. So I know I'm eyeing up some running shoes for my mom because she's out there trying to get her steps. Mason Paine – 1:33: In, you know, for my mom, I've kind of stopped trying to get her things because she gets her own things. And apparently she's a better shopper for herself than I am. And she always gets upset when I get her stuff. So I'm like, you know what I told my sister this year? We should just take her shopping and then we should go somewhere really fancy to eat afterwards. Right. Like making an experience. Charity Mhende – 1:57: That sounds like a great idea. And actually, you know, one of the things that I love about Google shopping is like, it makes shopping super easy. Specifically if your mom's looking for any deals or if you wanted to get her something for Mother's Day on a very specific budget, you can actually go on shopping.google.com and there is a personalized deal page that shows you different options that she might like, but also you might point her to it so she can make the shopping journey easy for herself. Mason Paine – 2:25: Absolutely. And also talking about spending money. Coachella. Coachella was in April. Was there any trends for that we. Charity Mhende – 2:32: Saw a lot of interest within the whole Coachella bracket. Specifically, it saw the highest search interest in the past month than it's ever been since 2018. People were also searching for Addison Rae, which rose by 650% after her surprise appearance. And her Coachella outfit was also a breakout search. Mason Paine – 2:54: I'm a little curious. Have you ever been to Coachella? Charity Mhende – 2:57: I unfortunately have not. The one Coachella that I should have gone to was the one that Beyonce went to because that looked like it was phenomenal. Mason Paine – 3:05: Isn't it always in hindsight? Like this year I was like, ah, you know,

Thanks for joining me, Charity. 0:10 - Charity: Thank you for having me. 0:11 - Mason: For February, what was the biggest trending thing? 0:14 - Charity: Well, New York Fashion Week happened this past month. People were searching for all things clothing, fashion, and style. One of the most interesting trends was people searching for Calvin Klein as the top four collection and fashion show. Calvin Klein came back after five years to show their collection, and they also have a new creative director, which sparked a lot of interest from people across the country. 0:38 - Mason: Pretty neat. By any chance, did you see any of the pictures? I tried looking things up. I couldn't really find anything other than Brandon Fraser geeking out about his son being on the runway. 0:48 - Charity: I mean, it's always really interesting to see what comes up both in terms of street style and on the runway. One of my favorite things to do, especially on social media, is to use Google AI to search for what you see on your screen. If you see something on the runway, you can actually see how to shop for it yourself based on what you can find on Google's AI. 1:08 - Mason: That's pretty nifty. Is there anything else that happened entertainment-wise? 1:13 - Charity: Yes. People were searching for the Oscars. They weren't this month, but the SAG Awards also happened this past month. People were searching for things like Oscar snubs when the nominations came out. Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie were among the top two trending snub searches. People were also asking, has Timothée Chalamet won an Oscar? That was a top trending question related to the Oscars, and he hasn't yet, but we're looking forward to seeing what happens next month. 1:39 - Mason: Oh my God. I didn't even know the SAG Awards happened. February is packed. There was so much, the Super Bowl. 1:46 - Charity: In terms of the Super Bowl, there was a lot of interest because of, obviously, the halftime performance. People were searching also for questions related to Kendrick Lamar and the lyrics, but there were also questions during the match. Specifically, they were looking for game results. They were also looking for information on people like Tom Brady and everything related to the game. 2:06 - Mason: Yeah, right. Then with Kendrick Lamar, he just came off of winning Record of the Year, and it's like the Grammys just happened. Did that trend at all, the Grammys? 2:16 - Charity: We see trends on award shows and different things that happen in the news all the time. What's really interesting is how people come to Google to search for culture. This past month, we also saw a lot of questions around Black History Month. As you know, one of the key things is people are looking for Black activists like Martin Luther King, Ruby Bridges, and Rosa Parks. People come and ask all sorts of different things based on what's happening at that time. 2:41 - Mason: Yeah, something I learned last year, I didn't know that was a thing, but for all months, there's a theme. Was there a theme for Black History? 2:49 - Charity: There was. Up and down the country, people were looking for different Black-owned restaurants, clothing brands. They were also asking questions like,

Mason Paine – 0:01: It's back to school season and Google Trends expert Gabriela Olivera joins me to speak about the top trends that people are searching for this school season. Thanks for joining me, Gabriela. Gabriela Olivera – 0:10: Of course. Happy to be here. Mason Paine – 0:12: Tell me, what are some of the top trends for back-to-school season? Gabriela Olivera – 0:16: We've got some fun ones this year. Stanley Cup is the top trending teacher gift. North Face Backpacks and True Religion Backpacks are the top trending backpack brands. School Lunch Peanut Butter Bar's recipe and School Lunch Cheese Stick recipe are the top trending school lunch recipes. Then we also have some fun back to school apparel that's been trending. The first is Nike sweatpants, second is Graphic Tees, third is sweatshirts, fourth is Zara jeans, and fifth is camo jeans which I actually bought some camo jeans just the other day. If you didn't know, you can actually say, for example, you see a graphic that you really like, you can use the lens to take a picture of that. In the search bar, you can use that photo to instantly see options that better match your preference. It also will then show shopping options where you can compare the prices and the different graphic tees based on what you like. Mason Paine – 1:07: I am a sucker for back-to-school stuff. Even though I'm not in school anymore, I don't know why I still get excited. It's the child in me. I was a little bit shocked though about gifts for teachers. Do you remember ever giving gifts to teachers? Because I never did. Was I just a bad kid? Gabriela Olivera – 1:21: Honestly, I don't think you were a bad kid, but I didn't either. My mom did. Mason Paine – 1:26: Oh, she did? What did she give her? Gabriela Olivera – 1:28: I think it was always a note and a little gift basket or some sort. Mason Paine – 1:34: Yeah, the gift basket thing. My sister, she has two kids and she did that. And I was like, why? I was like, why? I know giving them gifts, okay, cool. But I think as a teacher, wouldn't you want some school supplies? Give them pencils, give them so they don't have to buy it themselves, right? I don't think they need another Stanley Cup. Gabriela Olivera – 1:55: Honestly, it's a very good point. Actually, when you're shopping back to school season, there is a tool on Google Shopping that allows you to see price insights and historical average for products over the past 90 days. Then you can see the school supplies and decide if that deal is truly good and if now is the right time to buy. If now is not the right time to buy, there's also price alerts. So you know when it's the perfect time to snag those deals. Teachers, keep that in mind this year. It could come in handy. Mason Paine – 2:22: Absolutely. Because I know for my sister's son, he's now in the I think it's either the three or the five-subject notebook. And I think that would be really nice to give a teacher. Give her 10 of those. Bam. You can always, for the kid who didn't buy one, boom, put it right on his desk. Be like, "I know you didn't do it, but I got it for you and I didn't have to pay for it." I think that would be a super good gift. Pencils, pens, paper for the teacher. Now when it comes to some of the school supplies though like the backpacks, North Face, I didn't even know.

Mason Paine – 0:01: The Olympics are here. Find out what are some of the top searches of fans during the Summer games with Google trends expert Jessica Flores. Thanks for joining me, Jessica. Jessica Flores – 0:10: Great to be here. Nice to talk to you. Mason Paine – 0:12: So, Olympics, it just started, but you know what, how long is it going to last for? Jessica Flores – 0:17: Oh, I love the Olympics. I think it's 16 days. Right. And we are seeing a bunch of things people are searching for on Google already. They want to know the schedule. They want to know exactly that. Like how long is this going to last for? They want to know when folks are going to do certain events. We're seeing big breakout search terms like artistic gymnastics. Jessica Flores – 0:39: We're seeing a breakdancing. We have a huge spike there because of course, it's the first time. Break dancing is part of the Summer Olympics. A lot of people, they want to. Mason Paine – 0:48: Know what that about break dancing. Oh, my God. I didn't even know that was a thing. Has it started yet? Jessica Flores – 0:54: That's a good question. Let's look. Let's Google that. I believe breakdown thing is, it's a little bit away. But the cool thing is Google is going to help you through all of these questions. So if you google anything like breakdown thing, you know, us Olympic schedule, it will show you right at the very top, an information panel that will give you everything you need to know so you don't have to click through seven different websites to figure that out. So, for example, I'm seeing right now, okay, breaking the pre qualifier battle 07:00 a.m. August 9. Jessica Flores – 1:26: So you know right away, okay, that's when I can watch it. And the other thing is it customizes it to your local time so it knows exactly like, okay, so if you're in the Chicago area, it's going to give you time based on where you are. Mason Paine – 1:41: Oh, my God. That is really helpful because that's true. I remember way back when, when I would watch the Olympics religiously, you know, like, especially in Japan, some of those events started at like three in the morning, so you didn't know you had to convert the time. That's a lot of stuff I don't want to do. Jessica Flores – 1:58: Right, and the other thing is you're not going to wake up at 03:00 a.m. to watch every game. So you want to know, okay, where, where, who has the most medal, who won? And you can just, when you google Olympics or Olympic medal count, something like that right at the very top, it'll give you a breakdown of all the countries and it'll show you who's leading the way? So us right now, I believe the last I check was around 20 medals. We have a couple of gold medals in there. Yesterday, the men's artistic gymnastics team took home the bronze, which was like the first time they took home a medal in almost two decades, 16 years, I believe. And there's also a hometown Olympian there that helped the men team take home that medal, Paul Juda. Mason Paine – 2:43: Was there anything else that was trending? Like, I know a lot of people had a problem with the opening, but was there any searches for, like, Celine Dion? Jessica Flores – 2:51: Yeah, I mean, if you saw her performance, you could not help but get emotional and then want to watch that after. So we did see a huge increase in people searching for Celine Dion Olympic performance. Also, people wanted to know what song did she sing?

Mason Paine - 0:02: The end of June is upon us. And joining me today to discuss some of the top search trends from this past month is Google trends expert Marley McAliley. Thanks for joining me, Marley. Marley McAliley - 0:11: Thank you so much for having me. Mason Paine - 0:12: So, you know, one thing I'm always excited about is sales. And I have to know, was there any sales trending in this past June for sales? Marley McAliley - 0:20: People were really interested in different topics around weddings and wedding budgets. People were interested also in different wedding dress styles. So wedding season was really taking center stage. People are trying to figure out, you know, how they can keep their wedding under a budget. Something that was trending was actually a term that I recently heard about, which is called micro wedding. And micro wedding actually just means a small wedding or wedding under 50 people. So a lot of people are trying to figure out, you know, how they can celebrate their big day and do so under a budget. Mason Paine - 0:53: You know, I've never had the privilege of being part of, like, a wedding like that. Have you ever had wedding planning experience? Marley McAliley - 0:59: I don't have any wedding planning experience. I've been to a few weddings, but all of them have been on the larger side. So I think it's nice, the idea of having a more intimate ceremony with only your closest friends and family. Mason Paine -1:12: I kind of like that idea, too, because, like you've said, I've only been to, like, the big weddings. And the only thing I'm really worried about is is it an open bar? You know, what kind of food are they having? But I think it would be kind of nice to have something really tiny because then you could probably spend more money, and it feels like it's more, you know, like maybe you can go with duck instead of chicken. Marley McAliley - 1:31: Yeah, absolutely. You can splurge on certain areas that you normally wouldn't be able to with a larger party size, for sure. Mason Paine - 1:37: Zachary now, besides the catering, was there anything else that was kind of trending with the wedding season because it is pretty large? Marley McAliley - 1:43: Yes. We saw a lot of different questions around what pertains to a wedding. So basically, what do you wear to a wedding? What hand does a wedding ring go on? When do you send wedding invitations? What to write in a wedding card? So lots of questions on just, like, general best practices when it comes to attending weddings. Mason Paine - 2:03: What else happened in June? Marley McAliley - 2:05: Tv we had some great June premieres this past month. A lot of people are interested in Bridgerton. Bridgerton was the top trending premiere in June. People were searching questions related to the show, such as does call and forgive Penelope? Does Eloise and Penelope make up people are also really excited about House of the dragon, and high Valyrian is actually the top trending how to learn for languages, and that's the made up language that they speak in House of Dragons and in Game of Thrones. Mason Paine -2:35: I'm curious, have you watched any of these shows? Because I sure have not. Marley McAliley - 2:39: I've seen Bridgerton. I'm a big fan of Bridgerton. I've seen all of the seasons. So, yeah, I basically binge the third season this past weekend, so that was an enjoyable time.

Learn how Google's Lisa Gevelber suggests using AI for job hunting and building essential AI skills. Thanks for joining me, Lisa. Lisa Gevelber: 0:15 - Oh, it's so great to be here. Thanks for having me. Mason Paine:  0:18 - Could you tell me what can be considered some basic AI skills that you can actually highlight on your resume? Lisa Gevelber: 0:24 -Oh, sure. You know, employers are looking for AI skills more than ever, and so are people looking to learn AI skills. You know, AI can be used for all kinds of tasks at work, things like creating content or doing analyses or making a plan. AI's good at all of those things. And one of the best ways to show employers that you know your stuff on AI is to do a course and get a certificate. So at Google, we offer a course called Google AI essentials, and it will teach you all of the basic things you need to know to put the tools to work for you, to be more efficient and productive. And you earn our certificate at the end that really you can put on your LinkedIn or put on your resume to show employers that you know how to use these tools. Mason Paine: 1:13 - Oh, that's nice. I'm glad you guys have a course. So then you will be able to answer, will there be any lesson about prompting, and is it even important? Lisa Gevelber: 1:22 -Yeah, actually prompting is pretty important. The better job you do of asking the tool for what you want, the better the results are that you get. But actually prompting is kind of just like having a conversation with a tool. There are a few tips and tricks that you can learn about making effective prompts, like giving it a Persona, saying like, oh, pretend you're an expert on this topic and teach someone who's not an expert about a particular lesson. That's an example of giving a Persona. Or you can learn about prompting in terms of telling it what format you want the results in, you know. Please give me a summary of this report. Using bullet points. Lisa Gevelber: 2:04 - And so prompting really is a pretty basic thing, but it's really important to learn the skill, because the better job you do asking for things, the better job the tool will do in giving you what you're looking for. And we do teach basic prompting in the Google AI essentials course, so it's really handy. Mason Paine: 2:22 - Now, adding a skill to your resume is always a plus, but how is it helping people job switch? Lisa Gevelber: 2:28 - Oh, yeah. Well, employers more and more are looking for people with AI skills. As a matter of fact, searches by people looking for jobs, one of the highest or most popular searches we see are how to use AI or how to learn AI or courses to learn AI. But actually, AI tools like Google's Gemini tool can also be useful in your job search. It can help you draft a cover letter. For example, it can if you upload a job description of a job you're looking at. It can also help come up with potential interview questions that the recruiter might ask you or suggest questions that you could ask the recruiter, which is super useful. Or it can help you with your resume. Lisa Gevelber: 3:09 - Like, it can help you come up with power words that make your resume more...

Mason Paine – 0:02: Swiss DJ and producer Inamar joins me to speak about her career and her latest project, Dolce Vita. Thanks for joining me, Inamar. Inamar – 0:09: Hey, Mason, I'm thrilled about this interview opportunity. Thank you so much for having me. Mason Paine – 0:14: So tell me, Inamar, how long have you been a DJ? Inamar – 0:17: I've been a DJ for three years. Mason Paine – 0:19: That's amazing that you've been djing for three years already. You know, I'm curious, who are some of your musical influences and what drew you to them? Inamar – 0:27: I've been inspired by various artists like Nora and pure, pretty, pink and Miss Monique. Their ability to showcase their creations to the audience and feel the vibes directly on the stage is truly inspiring. Mason Paine – 0:41: You know, I read somewhere that you also play instruments. Is this true? Inamar – 0:44: Yes, I play the piano and the guitar. Mason– 0:46: Now do you ever incorporate the piano or guitar into your music? Inamar – 0:50: Well, my creative process always starts at my piano. Jamming around generates many ideas, melodies and even songwriting. Mason Paine – 0:58: From what I read, you're also a producer. What inspired you to gravitate towards that? Or was this more of a natural progression as a DJ? Inamar – 1:06: It was actually the other way around. Seven years ago, I started producing. I was in Ibiza, standing at Ushuaya, and suddenly it hit me like a lightning bolt. I knew I wanted to make music. I flew back home, downloaded logic prex and thought myself everything through YouTube videos and books. I think it was then a natural progression that at some point I wanted to showcase my music to an audience. That's when I started DJing and realized it's also a huge passion of mine. Mason Paine – 1:37: I love hearing how people end up becoming DJs and everything about you was self taught. It was just a natural progression into being a musician. And you just knew that, bam, this is where I want to be. So tell me about your latest track, Dolce Vita. Inamar – 1:52: Well, my new track, Dolce Vita, was created in my music studio in Lugano. Lugano is located in the italian part of Switzerland. The view of palm trees and Lugano's mountains. Sansa vaturatore inspired me to write Dolce Vita. I had this melody in my head and translated it onto my piano to craft the song's lyrics. I really wanted to produce a song that reflects my love for the italian way of life. So I poured all my good wipes into it. With this song, I aimed to emphasize the joys of life, such as good food, good company and beautiful surroundings. Song – 2:30: Dolce Vita By: Inamar Mason Paine – 5:27: Now I know you released Dolce Vita on Sirup. How did this partnership come about? Inamar – 5:32: Partnership with Sirup came about when they heard my track Dolce Vita and expressed interest in releasing it. We sat down to discuss the details and it felt like a great opportunity to share my music with a renowned label like Sirup. Their professionalism and commitment to high quality music convinced me that this was the right partnership for me. Mason Paine – 5:52: Now, most DJs focus on a specific genre of music, but I actually read you have a focus on three. What are these three genres and what drew you to them? Inamar – 6:01: My main genre is melodic techno, but I also enjoy playing techno and brokerage files in clubs. As a producer,

Mason Paine – 0:02: February has wrapped up, so let's check out this month's most popular search trends with Google trends expert Justin Burr. Thanks for joining me, Justin. Justin Burr – 0:10: Hey, thanks for having me. Mason Paine – 0:11: So a lot of stuff has been happening so far, and we need a recap. And the first thing I need to know about what was trending on the Grammys. Justin Burr – 0:19: Yeah. You know, February is a short month, but they crammed so much stuff into it. There's so many things to talk about. So Grammys. Right. Do people still watch award shows? I don't know. But looking at the Google trends, the top search red carpet looks, Taylor Swift number one. Boy genius number two. Billy Joel number three. Taylor Swift, always looking. H. She also won Grammy of the year, album of the year. She was also trending because she announced an upcoming album, tortured poets department. I already bought the vinyl on pre order. What's up? A couple other trending things. Paris Hilton new album was trending. Has Miley Cyrus ever won a Grammy? Was trending because she won her first ever Grammys. So no, she hadn't, but now she has. So I didn't watch the Grammys, but I've heard gothings and there's a lot of search interest in this. Mason Paine – 1:10: Know, it's crazy about the Miley Cyrus one. I was completely shocked. I really thought she won multiple Grammys. Justin Burr – 1:17: No, for sure. And I think that was why it was one of the breakout searches because I think people were pretty shocked when she won that one, that it was her first because, yeah, she's been making sweet tunes for a long time. Mason Paine – 1:28: Right. Justin Burr – 1:29: I don't know. I guess she never got it. Mason Paine – 1:30: Who else was I? Celine Dion. I thought that was fabulous that she was out there because she has that stiff person syndrome. So I know she limits her going outside a lot, but it was absolutely amazing. She looked gorgeous. Justin Burr – 1:44: So good. Yeah. She's had to cancel some tours and stuff. Right. She's had some mobility issues. Mason Paine – 1:49: Yeah. Justin Burr – 1:49: Great. I've seen her in concert and it was. Mason Paine – 1:54: Wow. Justin Burr – 1:55: Yeah, dude, dude. Right before the pandemic hit, right in Brooklyn, got some tickets, last second, went in there and she just rocked. Was, it was so such, she's such a performer, really captivates an audience, captivates the world. So it's awesome. Mason Paine – 2:12: When it comes to other culture stuff, what else was trending in February? Justin Burr – 2:16: Yeah, there's a few things. We've got Black History Month, we've got lunar new year, and we've also got some Valentine's Day things. So some trending searches here. Why is black History Month in February. That was a breakout search in the United States, and there's a lot of different answers, but some of the main points are that Lincoln and Douglas's birthdays are in February, and there used to be black history week, and that was in February, and they extended it to an entire month. Who started the civil rights movement? And there's no single person that I was actually the catalyst for that. But the ACP was a prominent organization in that movement, was also looking at the top searched black owned products ...

Find out how he stays motivated and the impact he has made in India developing the EDM scene there. Thanks for joining me. Browncoat. 0:13-Browncoat: Hi there, Mason. Thank you so much for having me. I've been really looking forward to this conversation. Really happy to be here. 0:18-Mason Paine: You've been creating music for 26 years. What first drew you into EDM? 0:24-Browncoat: While I wouldn't necessarily call my music EDM, I try and make more deep house, melodic techno and house and slightly more underground than conventional EDM. And it's been 26 years, but it's still a struggle in India because India has such a deep and rich musical culture that it's very difficult for anything which is non-indian to cut through. And that's probably the main reason where I wanted to showcase more of the international and electronic music because that's not what you get in still date. There's not a single radio channel or tv show or anything which can be considered mainstream that showcases international music. And that's the best part about it. You're running against the tide and showcasing music that people are not used to. That was the biggest draw for me. 1:12-Mason Paine: So you've been going against the grain for many years. But when you first started in the scene, what genre did you spin? 1:19-Browncoat: In the beginning, it was just a fight and struggle with the venues to allow us to play international, be it top 40, hip hop, r and b, or even basic pop. It was just that difficult because everybody just wanted you to play what's being broadcasted everywhere, the typical hindi film music or the punjabi music. And at that time, we would just be happy to play top 40s because that was the struggle for us. 1:42-Mason Paine: Wow. So you had a history of just fighting to be able to play certain songs in the style that you wanted to. But as of today now, what's the particular genre that you spin nowadays I. 1:55-Browncoat: Play a lot of melodic techno, indie dance, deep house, progressive. That's also because I produce a lot of these genres and it gets an amazing response from the floor. It's really progressing beautifully and I love where the music is right now. 2:08-Mason Paine: What is the EDM music scene like in India? 2:11-Browncoat: The electronic scene in India is amazing. The crowd that turns up for our events is just beautiful. The response that you get from the audience is incomparable because I've traveled and played around the world and I still prefer playing to an Indian audience because they really give you their all when they're dancing, the screaming, the shouting, the smiling. And even though it might not be the mainstream genre in India, but because they're such a populist nation, a small fraction also makes up for big numbers. So the scene in India is amazing. You can ask any touring dj. The love that the dance flow in India gives is incomparable. 2:45-Mason Paine: You talked about how it was an uphill battle to be a dj 26 years ago and how now the scene is like, really amazing. But have you had to navigate any big challenges while promoting your music in India? 2:59-Browncoat: It's a little tough because we still are a conservative society and clubbing and partying are still considered more of a weste...

Wannes joins me to speak about how the group was formed and what are some things we can expect from them. Thanks for joining me, Wannes. 0:14 - Wannes Salome: Hey, Mason. Really happy to be here, and, thanks for having me on. 0:17 - Mason Paine: So, Wannes, tell me, how did you guys form Ramsesboomboom? 0:21 - Wannes Salome: Yes. So Ramsesboomboom is a duo project of me and Erik. Erik and I have known each other, like, for all of our professional music career. We went to school together. He studied drums, and I studied music production. And we basically clicked right away at school. So we played in bands together. And after our studies, We actually played in a band called Clangstaff, which is a indie rock band. 0:48 - Wannes Salome: And we toured all over America and Europe and played a lot of festivals. And during that time, when we got tired of doing indie music, we got together and started to write some electronic music Because we were both really into electronic music as well, like John Hopkins, James Blake, like a lot of alternative electronic music. So we just started to write electronic track. After a while, we had a collection of them and we thought we should release this, do something with it. 1:16 - Mason Paine: You know, inquiring minds have to know, Ramsesboomboom. Now that's a pretty unique name. Can you give me the background on what it means? 1:25 - Wannes Salome: Definitely, it's an interesting name. Ramses was actually the name of our very first demo. Like, the very first electronic track we we created was initially called Ramses. Then we decided to call our project Ramses, and we called that track I feel nothing, which is the 1st, track we released with this project. So actually, the 1st track we ever wrote is also the 1st track, we released, which is very funny. But then after a while, we decided to add the Boom, Boom to it because it just It's a little bit of playfulness, and it's also gives the whole name a little bit more of a unique vibe, a more of a interesting vibe, which is why We went with Ramsesboomboom. 2:04 - Mason Paine: You know, prior to forming Ramsesboomboom, did either of you have any other musical background? 2:10 - Wannes Salome: Yeah. So we we studied together on the Conservatoire of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and we both studied at the pop academy. Yeah. I think We're both just really we have really broad interests. So we've done a lot of music. We've done a pop and jazz and tried out some classical music influences. Yeah. And as, as producers, we work with different artists with different backgrounds as well. 2:37 - Wannes Salome: So I don't know. We're we're just very much in love with music and creating and experimenting, actually. I think experimenting is a big theme for us in our music, musical career and in this project as well. 2:50 - Mason Paine: So you guys have known each other for a pretty long time, but how long have you and Erik been performing together? 2:56 - Wannes Salome: Yeah. Erik and I have been performing together for years now. I think at least 10 years, which is basically my, my whole professional life. Yeah. I don't think there's anyone that I've worked with as much as with Erik. And, yeah, we were just very used to playing together and writing together and philosophizing of about music and a lot of other stuff as well.

You had the Golden Globes at the beginning of the month. And as folks tend to do, they want to know who's there and what they're wearing. So Ali Wong, who won a best actress award for her role in beef, was one of the top trending people the day after the Golden Globes. She was the first person of Asian descent to win that particular award in succession. I don't know if you're a fan. I'm a fan. Even though the series is over, they. Are still continuing to trend. AMKA - 0:18: Yeah, well, I started DJ when I was 14, and the story behind my DJ name is, is that everyone was calling me AMKA because it's my gamer tag. I'm a big fan of video games, so, yeah, I kept AMKA as my artist's name. That's it. Mason Paine - 0:37: Nice. I actually like video games too. Mason Paine 00:01: it's 2024 and people are already hitting Google searching for information about health, travel and more. Robert Ferrara joins me to speak about the new year's trends. Thanks for joining me, Robert. Robert Ferrara 00:13: Thanks for having me. Happy New Year. Mason Paine 00:15: You know, what are some of the top search new Year resolutions people are searching for? Robert Ferrara 00:20: Now is that time of year. You know, everyone's thinking about their New Year's resolutions, how to better themselves for 2024, and we're really seeing that reflected across all of our search trends as well on Google. So this year, resolutions are always top of mind in January that we see in our results. But the categories that we're seeing, not surprising. The first one is health and wellness. So that includes physical health, mental wellness, really the whole gamut there. Also, right after that is financial. Also, one we see pretty consistently year over year things related to money and how you can be more budget conscious and manage your money more effectively in the new year. Robert Ferrara 00:57: And then finally, the third one was a bit of a breakout and a little surprising to us, too, which is really cool. So green and ecofriendly resolution were some of the top ones as well. So a lot of people thinking about the kinds of products they buy, whether they're deemed ecofriendly, sustainable fashion, how to be more green at home, just trying to lessen their environmental impact this year. Mason Paine 1:17: That one is pretty interesting. How would that look in the trends? Is that kind of like, how would. I impact the environment less? Like, what can I eat or what can I do? What does that look like? Robert Ferrara 1:28: I think there's a lot of attention to what we're consuming as a big one. So, for example, we're seeing a big spike in ecofriendly cleaning products, things that we buy every day for our household that we might have overlooked, and what kind of chemicals and materials go into these products, what is the impact they have on planet and things like that. A big thing, too, that we're seeing is sustainable fashion as well. More of a concern over fast fashion and making sure that you understand the kind of materials the garments are made out of, what kind of labor went into creating them. Is it something that's going to last for a long time? All these things that people really want to think about before making that purchase, and then even goes for larger purchases as well, which is very interesting. A funding one we spoke to with sustainable engagement ring searches really increased as well. Whether that's like vintage or pre owned or lab grown diamonds, and people doing research on alternative engagement rings, it's really interesting to see how these pains year over year. Mason Paine 2:29: Was there any differences from last year to this year? Robert Ferrara 2:32: We always see some differences in the exact trends. Health and financial are pretty consistent year over year. Like, for example, gym membership and meal prep, they spike every January and then some change over time. So, for example, the health benefits of dry January has completely surged. We actually saw an increase of over 2000% in the past week alone. And that's something that we've seen steadily growing year over year as more and more people are interested.

Mason Paine 00:01: Jack Sheldy is a DJ and producer based out of San Diego, California, that goes by the name of Pepper Jack. Let's find out why he has caught the attention of many industry professionals and fans alike since his 2022 debut. Thanks for joining me, Pepper Jack. PepperJvck 00:15: Thanks for having me on, Mason. Mason Paine 00:17: You know, I read that you were classically trained. At what age did you start your training? PepperJvck 00:22: So, I actually started learning classical music around the age of ten. I started playing the piano from a next-door neighbor that I had actually, and then I transitioned that into being a cellist. And I was the first chair in our orchestra in junior high and high school for a while. And I ended up playing the cello for about eight years. Learned a lot of sheet music, how to read music, how to play in a quartet, how to play in an orchestra. I was in a symphony for a while. So, yeah, it's been a lot of different classical training before I got into electronic music later on in my life. Mason Paine 00:56: That's an impressive resume. How did you go from classically trained to gravitating towards dance music? PepperJvck  1:02: Yeah, so that's a great question, actually, because I've had a really diverse background in music. I started in symphonies and quartets and orchestras and that sort of thing, and then I actually got into rock music after that. So I was in a garage band, in my friend's garage. We would get together after school. We went to the same high school and just jam out. I was on the guitar. We had a keyboardist, we had a singer. We play anything from blues to jazz to rock music, and that was a lot of fun. PepperJvck 1:30: So I think that transition for me, from the orchestra setting into a rock band and then finally into electronic music, was just kind of natural for me because I was going from an instrument that wasn't that high tech, it wasn't amplified at all to something that was amplified, and I could create distortion on the amp I had with my guitar. And then eventually buying software and getting even more high tech by getting into house music and electronic music production. So for me, I think it was just that transition of getting more and more electronic, more and more amplified, and exploring all the capabilities I had at my disposal, especially. I felt like it was pretty unique having that classical background and just knowing what I know about music theory, chord progressions, minor skills, major skills, all of that knowledge I had, because I feel like a lot of people in Ableton kind of get into it from the dj side, like they dj venues and that sort of thing. And they get into it from a social aspect, and then they buy Ableton and get into production. But for me, it was really about using and channeling the skills I had with symphony aspects, with knowing my skills, my chord progressions and music theory, and coming into electronic music from that background. So I felt like that was kind of unique for my skill set and something that I always wanted to pursue. Mason Paine 2:50: Eventually, the more djs that I talked to, the more I realized how they start their career in one place and they'll end up in a totally different genre. Did that happen to you? Did you start out in, like, trance or dubstep and you found out that. No, man, I really like house. PepperJvck 3:07: Yeah. So I love all types of electronic music. I love dubstep. I grew up listening to Skrillex. I love house music,

In 2000 they gained mainstream success with their release of “The Bongo Song”. Take a listen to it here. “The Bongo Song” was featured in the 2000 Summer Olympics. Joining me to break down the top searches on Google and entertainment, sports, pop culture news and more is Google trends expert Justin Burr. Thanks for joining me, Justin. 00:14 - Justin Burr: Hey, thanks so much for having me. 00:16 - Mason Paine: This year, there's been so much that has happened. I don't even know where to start other than what's the biggest trend, I guess. 00:24 - Justin Burr: It's so fun to look back at the year and what people were searching and what the trending searches were. If we look at the news category, it's always a bit of a somber category or just a little bit more serious because people are coming to Google to figure out what is happening in these specific instances. Number one trend in 2023 was the war in Israel and Gaza. Then we had the Titanic submarine and Hurricane Hillary rounding out the top three in the news category. The thing that all of those things have in common is that they are fluid, they are something that is evolving. That's why we see these trending... These trending searches so high on the list because people are coming back to Google repeatedly to get updated information, especially in the context of natural disasters. We see those high on the trending search list every single year because people are figuring out what's happening, how to stay safe, what is the latest and the greatest in terms of that context. 1:19 - Mason Paine: Yeah, that's pretty true. I know one of the things that affected here in Chicago was the Canada wildfires because it actually got super smoggy for a while out here. I think it happened in New York and a lot of the upper states in America. 1:32 - Justin Burr: Yeah, that was on the newest category, the number 10 trending search was Canada wildfires. Yeah, in New York City, there was one day where you couldn't be five feet in front of you. The smoke was so thick. It was really wild. I think people were probably searching for that quite a bit to understand what the air quality was, what the buyers were doing, and how to maybe avoid it. 1:55 - Mason Paine: Now, one of the categories that I was really interested in, because I didn't realize so much had happened, was the passing. I'm like, Man, there's a lot of people that had passed. I thought that was like a year or two ago, but no, it was this year. 2:07 - Justin Burr: It's always interesting to look at folks that left us this year and what search interest they drove. So yeah, Matthew Perry coming in at number one, obviously very tragic, beloved by many from the television show, Friends, said Tina Turner. Number two, Jerry Springer. Number three, and the other top 10 categories, Bob Barker. So, yes, some sad departures this year, but yeah, it is interesting to remind yourself who passed this year. And yeah, it does feel like some of those folks were... It was longer ago, but no later than 2023. 2:38 - Mason Paine: Yeah, the ones that affected me was Bob Barker and Jerry Springer. As a kid, when you were homesick, those were the two shows you would watch all day long. And so not having them, it was like, Wow. I don't think that they weren't on air anyways, but it was just the fact like a piece of my childhood just went away. And it was like, And then Suzanne Summer's.

Thanks for joining me, Christina. 00:14 – Christina: Hi, it's so great to be here. 00:15 – Mason: So to top off first, I got to know, what are the top gifts trending for the holiday so far? 00:21 – Christina: Yeah. Based on a search trend we've been seeing through the year, we've been able to identify about a hundred gifts and ideas. For me, I'm looking for something fun, unique, and maybe a little nostalgic. So some things that stood out to me on the list were things like our engraved necklaces. Purchases for that are up about 5,000 %, as well as lab-grown diamond tennis bracelets, so economically sourced diamonds, folks are looking at. And the beauty space, things like claw clips to pull your hair back, those are making a resurgence this year. On the electronics front, we're seeing things like headsets are really of interest. So either gamer headsets with a mic on them or even sleep headphones for people that are trying to maybe get a more restful sleep. We've been seeing stuff like that pop up. 1:07 – Mason: I'm a little bit curious about the keyword Choiceage. So when going through the apparel and accessories, I noticed that one of the things that was trending was target cozy sneakers. Why use the word cozy? Why not just word like, slippers? 1:22 – Christina: Yeah. So what we're seeing is seeing the search trend for things like flippers. They always spike in December. So if I had to guess, it's because people are trying to stay warm this holiday. And what are fun words that people think of? And I think cozy is probably one of them. 1:36 – Mason: Okay, that's fair enough. When it comes to the searches, what's driving the holiday sales? Is it like deep discounts or special promotions? 1:45 – Christina: So I think it's probably a mix of both, right? So we get the list of things that people are really looking for. But what we also see is people come to Google to find things like deals. So maybe they want the big ticket item but they don't want to spend full price. Something that we're able to help people do if they're looking to save a little bit of money is if they Google shop deals, they'll be taken to a special landing page that will give them millions of items that are on sale right now. So they can search through the different categories and find things from their favorite brands like Target or Under Armor so that they can save. Some money. 2:17 – Mason: Now, would it be smarter to use broad terms instead of specific terms, such as if I wanted to get shoes, I would just type in shoe deals instead of specified Nike deals. 2:29 – Christina: So the great is that you can do whatever feels most comfortable. So the way that I think about it is if you're looking for a specific thing, you can search for that specific item or that specific brand. Or if you're looking for something to the starting place, you can type in something like shoes. Can I share one of my favorite hacks, though? 2:47 – Mason: Yeah, sure. 2:48 – Christina: Okay, so I don't know if you've heard of Google Lens, but with Google Lens,

Thanks for joining me, Elizabeth. 00:12 – Elizabeth: Thanks for having me. 00:13 – Mason:  So Halloween, it's one of my favorite holidays. And I'm just so curious, what was trending so far in Google? 00:19 – Elizabeth: Well, Halloween in October, we have so many fun trends this month. Our top trends were costumes, makeup and DIY effects, food, and decor. Of course, we had some local searches, which were really fun this month to see as well. Should we get into the costumes first? 00:37 – Mason:  Absolutely. That's the best part. Are people looking to make their own costumes or they're buying costumes? 00:44 – Elizabeth: We definitely had some people looking for top DIY costumes. Rosie the Riveter is the most search last-minute costume of all time in the United States, and Pirate is the most search DIY costume. But the breakout search that we saw this year is Barbie is the top trending costume of the year across every single state, which really never happens in our search trends. There were probably lots of Barbies out this weekend, and there's going to be lots of Barbies out on Halloween night. We also saw a kin dog costume is the breakout pet costume search of the year, which I want to see pictures of these Barbie and kin dog costumes. Yeah. 1:30 – Mason:  That sounds so cute. I'm wondering, what is the dog going to wear? Is it going to wear a wig, a little hat, a cowboy hat, the whole theme? How's it going to go? 1:40 – Elizabeth: I know. I also wonder the fur jacket that ken wears when he's in his mojo jojo, cata house, maybe that is what the dog is going. To wear. 1:50 – Mason:  That would be so funny. You're right. This will be absolutely fabulous. Was there any makeup ideas? I'm sure probably the low hanging fruit is to just get a costume. But I have to know, is there any makeup ideas for people? 2:05 – Elizabeth: Yes. Every October we do see face paint and theatrical blood's bike. But this year we saw Carrie as the top training in costume search in conjunction with theatrical blood. We also saw yellow as the top trending contact lens color. A couple of months ago, we saw Barbie nails as a top trending nail design. Then this month we saw that change to ghosts. People were headed to the nail salon to get little ghosts on their fingernails. 2:35 – Mason:  That's cute. I like that. I think you could do that year round, though. It's not too big where it's going to be noticeable, right? 2:41 – Elizabeth: Yeah, exactly. 2:43 – Mason:  Now, for kids, are there any craft things that were for children? 2:47 – Elizabeth: We did see some decor and how to make things, decorations-wise. We had dry eyes for smoke effects. A pumpkin candy bucket was a breakout search. We also saw people trying to make spiderwebs, graveyard fences, ghost for yard, skeletons, and scarecrows. There was definitely some DIY going on in household this month. 3:14 – Mason:  Yeah, we have a thing in our family where all the little kids will make Halloween decorations for the windows. It'll just be a paper with a Frankenstein face on it, and they'll either color it in or if they're super good, they'll try to cut it out of little pieces of paper and they'll make something fancy. Of course,

Starting out as just a search engine, it has evolved into so much more than that. Joining me to discuss Google's journey is Google trends expert, Luma Hamade. Thanks for joining me, Luma. 00:17 - Luma Hamade: Yeah, I'm super glad to be here. 00:19 - Mason Paine: So what happened? Google was just a search engine, and now it's this huge company. Was that always the dream? 00:27- Luma Hamade: When we talk about the start of Google, it really started in 1996 when Larry and Serge, who were both PhD students at Stanford, found out how to create a search algorithm that was based off of what we call relevancy. Making sure that when you're searching for something such as a dog crate as an example, you're not getting a bunch of links for dog adoption because we're assuming you already have a dog or have those plans. That search engine, as you correctly mentioned, became really popular. In 1998, it was incorporated into Google and Google link. When it comes to the other media that we've touched, we've definitely expanded into mass and shopping, but our core message really stays the same of just making information accessible to everyone, making information equitable for everyone. I think we've done a really great job at that. Looking back on 25 years, we've helped a lot of people, which has been really great. 1:22 - Mason Paine: Twenty-five years, that's a really long time. There's got to be some notable achievements. What are some of the biggest things that Google has done so far? 1:30 - Luma Hamade: I think everybody has a story of a Google product that's changed their lives. For me personally, one of those stories was in 2006 when we created Google Translate. I come from a very multicultural family. A lot of people in my family speak many different languages. English actually wasn't my first language, although I hope you can't tell at this point in time. Having that accessibility to translate in real time and communicate with each other was really, really huge for my family. Going forward, the work that we've done on the translation front hasn't stopped. We also have this new product called Lens. You can think of it like your camera lens, where you can actually point at a sign or a menu that's in a different language and it'll translate it for you right away. It's making things like travel so much easier, connections to people so much easier. 2:23 - Mason Paine: It's true. I never thought about it until you started saying how things that changed your life and password manager changed my life because I don't have to remember anything. 2:35 - Luma Hamade: I Love that. 2:38 - Luma Hamade: I don't because I have really long passwords now, uppercase, lowercase, special characters. I'm like, What am I doing? I can't remember too much. I end up using the same one over and over again. But with password manager, I've gotten so lazy. 2:56 - Luma Hamade: Oh, my gosh. I still feel that. I feel the same, too, with shopping. You used to have to go into 10-plus stores to find what you wanted. Now you can look it up and see the inventory within two seconds and walk into the place that has actually what you need. I just think so much time has been saved for everyon...

One organization that has constantly supported the cause of small business is the Small Business Administration. This year marks a significant milestone for the SBA as it celebrates its 70th anniversary. Joining me to speak about the origin's achievements and where the SPA is headed in the future is Region's five administrator, Geri Sanchez-Aglipay. Thanks so much for joining me, Geri. 00:31 - Geri Aglipay: Thank you. 00:32 - Mason Paine: Now it's the 70th anniversary of the SBA. Can you tell me why was the SBA started in the first place? 00:39 - Geri Aglipay: The SBA was started in 1953 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a law that created the SBA into existence. It really happened upon the heels of the Great Depression that had occurred, and then not long after World War II. And this country was looking to revitalize its economy in the 1950s given the economic conditions that had occurred, especially after World War. And so the FBA was established because we know that two out of three jobs are created by small businesses. It helps also to reinvest back into the community. We call that the multiplier fact. When you shop at a small business, you're actually making sure that those dollars are reinvested back into the community, shopping at small business, meaning that they're recirculated in the community, and they can be recirculated between seven to up to 10 times more in the community, which means that it can go towards shopping at other locations and reinvesting into the road, services and such. So really, shopping local does have that multiplier effect of reinvesting back into the community through commerce. 1:43- Mason Paine: Now that's really cool. But I'm also curious about what other programs does the SBA offer that's going to help entrepreneurs in general? Is there something that people don't know about? 1:53 - Geri Aglipay: Well, when we're celebrating our 70 years, we're celebrating the positive impact that we've had for American entrepreneurship, competition, and innovation through our economy. What we're doing now, that was with President Eisenhower and under President Biden and Administrator Guzman, we continue to put small businesses at the forefront of President Biden's investing in America agenda. What we're doing is that we are positioning the agency under Administrator, Guzman, and President Biden to meet people where they're at, leveraging technology, learning about that to improve customer service experience. I'm right now taking up this interview by myself with you as well. That's leveraging technology, making use of that so that we are saving time and money so small business owners can focus on what they do best, which is run their business. We also do that by advancing equity in all of our programs so that they can compete and win contracts in the global marketplace, but also the United States. Some of those programs are lending programs as well. They've been stall work flagship programs to actually provide affordable loans for small businesses to start up. And SBA has long been that gap financer, but we want to make sure everybody who wants to grow a business can in this country....

The idea behind “Children'' came about as a result of a troubling issue in Italy: young people were getting into car accidents after partying and clubbing late. One of those resources is the Small Business Administration or the SBA. Joining me to speak about this organization is Region 5 Administrator Geri Sanchez Aglipay. Thank you for taking the time to speak with me, Geri. 00:19 - Geri Aglipay: Good to be here. Thank you for having me. 00:22 – Mason: So tell me, prior to joining the SBA, what did you do? 00:25 - Geri Aglipay: I was at a national nonprofit organization where I oversaw field work and policy work for small business and economic development for the Midwest region, but also nationwide for women's entrepreneurship as well. 00:40 – Mason: Wow. So this sounds like it's a passion for you. 00:43 - Geri Aglipay: Building wealth and addressing financial insecurity and increasing prosperity is something that is not only a professional interest, but it's a personal interest and passion as well. 00:54 – Mason: Was there anything in particular that led you to the SBA, though? 00:58 - Geri Aglipay: What led me to the SBA was they were long time colleagues of mine with the federal government. And for a number of years, I had seen what good government does with the SBA field offices. And that's who I've been most familiar with working with, the SBA district offices. And working with them, not only for on the ground work, doing outreach to women and those who are traditionally socio economically disadvantaged, so to speak, really gave me such high regard for my colleagues who I were working with alongside all these years. When the pandemic hit, it was the SBA that I turned to because they were the ones who actually were supporting those small business owners who weren't prepared with so many of the financial aid and pandemic relief. I turned to them and I said, Hey, the business owners need our help. Can we do more regular partnerships? W e actually worked together before I was at the SBA and did a lot of outreach about how to navigate the pandemic and how to survive it and what are the free, no cost resources so anybody can get help what they need. 2:05 – Mason: Now, it's funny about the SBA. I know that that is a program that anybody can join, but it wasn't very well known, I think, before the pandemic. Do you think during the pandemic there was more light shed on those programs? 2:17 - Geri Aglipay: Absolutely. I mean, the Small Business Administration as a federal agency has been around for 70 years since President Eisenhower established it. He established it because he knew, which many economists and now people know more since the SBA became well known during the pandemic, is that small businesses are the backbone of our economy. They are giants of economy as Minister Guzman says. They create two thirds of the job. They also are 40 % of our economic productivity. I think for the SBA, it may not have been as well known before, but after the pandemic, we were the only federal agency, well actually, lender in the world to provide relief to its borrowers where in six months, they did not have to pay the principal, the fees, or interest on their current loans. The SBA is there to establish the level of the field to make sure that people who wanted to be an entrepreneur and had a sm...

As June draws to a close, let's take a look at what the world's been searching for in Entertainment, Culture, Science, Sports and more with Google Trends expert Christina Basillio. For the latest trends from Google visit: Trends.Google.com/TrendsFollow Twitter on Google at: Twitter.com/GoogleLike Google on Facebook at: Facebook.com/GoogleLike and Follow Google on Instagram at: Instagram.com/Google https://75dc83.p3cdn1.secureserver.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/11.-GT-Christina-Basillio.mp3 Top Searched Google Trends of June: Transcription 00:00 – Announcer: Mason Vera Paine. 00:01 – Mason: Before we head into July, Google trends expert Christina Basillio will break down some of the top search trends in entertainment, culture, science, sports, and more. Thank you for joining me, Christina. 00:11 - Christina Basillio: Yeah, so happy to be here. 00:13 – Mason: All right, so for the month of June, there's a lot of things that's happened. But entertainment, was there anything popping? 00:19 - Christina Basillio: Yeah. So for the month of June, Spiderman really took over, I guess we could say, the multiverse. Searches for Spiderman across the universe increased by 500 %. And one of the really interesting things that popped off with Spiderman was people were really interested to know is the multiverse was real. And what does it even mean? They've doubled over the past month. 00:40 – Mason: Wait, did they mean like, is the multiverse real real or was the multiverse real as a part of the MCU? 00:48 - Christina Basillio:  I think people are wondering if it's real real. 00:53 – Mason: Well, you know what? I'm a huge Spiderman fan, so I love having new people jump into the genre. We got to remember, guys, no one's going to get bit by a spider and turn radioactive and into a superhero, right? 1:04 - Christina Basillio: Hopefully not. 01:07 – Mason: What else happened in the month of June? 1:09 - Christina Basillio: So on the culture front, June is Pride Month, and it's also for June teens. So what we were seeing in recognition of Pride Month is people were really interested in giving back. And we've seen this year over year that nonprofits like the Trevor Project, spike during the month of June. And what we also saw for June teens was that people were really interested in learning a little bit more about it. There are a lot of trending questions like, what is June teens? Is it a federal holiday? And one of the ones that really caught my attention is that people are just wondering where it got its name from. 1:41 – Mason: Yeah, I know for one thing for me, lift every voice. I didn't even know about that song until I went to a friend invited me to her niece and nephew's graduation, their eighth grade graduation, and they sing, lift every voice. I remember standing there like, what's happening? I didn't know. And she was like, just follow me. It's a very sweet thing. 2:01 - Christina Basillio: Yeah, it's so great. We're all learning so much. There's so much culture and things that are happening, not only for Juneteenth, but for Pride Month. So it's great that people just want to get involved and are learning something new. 02:13 – Mason: Absolutely. I think that's so important, being able to expand your mind. Another thing that's been happening in June was the air quality. I know that thing was bad all the way through. It's because of what's happening in Canada, I think the wildfires, but I'm not too sure. 2:28 - Christina Basillio: Yeah. So air quality was top of mind for everybody. It was really interesting. In June, people were really interested in knowing what does hazardous air quality means that more than quadrupled. And we were seeing this all over the United States, where in the Northeast and Midwest, people were really searching for air quality index. But other parts of the country were also looking more into wildfires. One of the things that sparked my interest in these convers...

Mason: Ai has become a major part of the tech industry, with companies such as IBM using it to replace their employees and other sectors considering doing the same thing. To date, no government has taken action against this technology, which raises the question, should we be concerned? Data protection law partner Will Richmond Coggin joins me to break down the regulations and policy issues with AI. Thanks for joining me, Will. 00:27 - Will Richmond: Oh, you're welcome. 00:28 - Mason: So AI, it's such a big thing right now, such an explosion. But do you think that right now that AI is going to stick around? 00:37 - Will Richmond: Definitely. We've seen a paradigm shift in the way in which AI has penetrated both popular consciousness but also the commercial world. The really big change this time is that you haven't got AI, which people are developing as an experiment to see what can be done. You've got AI with actual practical applications which is being deployed in real world environments and to solve real world problems. 1:08 - Mason: Now, you said that companies were experimenting with it. I know personally, one of the weirdest things that I saw with this experimentation was McDonald's. Mcdonald's is having its own server and you get to talk to it for a minute and then maybe a real person will come on and help you. Are there any other industries that it's strange to see AI in? 1:30 - Will Richmond: Yeah, I think it's certainly a bit of a risk at the moment for companies that are in the public service or customer service as their main model using AI because it's still a little unreliable and you definitely have those risks that the AI is going to say something unexpected or produce an output which damages your brand. That's one thing if it's an environment where people are tolerant of that mistake, but it's something where customers expect to be handled with a certain degree of courtesy, say, or to get correct answers first time to the problems that they're having. They probably don't want to feel like they're part of an experiment and they certainly don't want to be insulted or offended. I think that's probably one area that's surprising. The other is at the other end of the spectrum, which is where you've got AI being used for really complex, difficult decision making. For example, in the UK, there was an AI tool that was deployed by a local authority, so a local government body, to determine whether or not people that were receiving state benefits were potentially fraudulent, say, whether they were dishonestly claiming those. The AI wrongly identified large numbers of people as being high risk for fraud, and that resulted in them being accused wrongly and all sorts of unfortunate consequences on some of the most vulnerable people in society. 3:09 - Will Richmond: Again, it was surprising to see that being rushed so quickly into an area that could have such profound adverse impact. 3:16 - Mason: I actually find that to be really strange, and I'm glad you brought that up. This technology may not be new, but it definitely is unreliable. I believe there's even a lawsuit that is currently out there of radio host is suing the creators of ...

Thanks for joining me, Baily. 00:11 – Baily: Thanks for having me. 00:13 – Mason: So in May, what was the biggest trending thing that was happening? 00:18 – Baily: There was a lot happening in May. We had the Met Gala at the beginning of the month, Cinco de Mayo on May 5. Overall, the month celebrates Asian Pacific American heritage. So a lot of busy things. There's also NBA playoff. I feel like we've been talking about basketball since forever with March Madness. Now we get into the playoff. So all over the place. I thought something that was a bit atypical and pretty cool was tipping culture. So the term tipping culture has been searched at a 15 year high and it's doubled over the past year in the US, folks searching for should I tip and wondering... There's a lot of whys around tipping. Why do restaurants add gratuity for large parties? Why does America tip so much? So tipping was my... Wasn't expecting it was the curve ball. 1:05 – Mason: Yeah, that one's a little weird, but I'm not going to lie, I'm questioning it myself. I'm picking up my own orders, so I feel like, why am I tipping you? 1:15 – Baily: I agree. That was actually, there were over the five top questions around asking for tips, the why is something asking for tips. Number five is why are fast food restaurants asking for tips, which I can only... I'm sure fast casual is also in there. I'm with you. It was a bit of that trend that was quite validating. 1:33 – Mason: Yeah, you know what it is? During the pandemic, I was giving everybody tips. I was Oprah of tipping. You get a tip and you get a tip. I was like, I'm going to help everybody. And now I'm broke. I'm like, You need to pay me a tip now. 1:48 – Baily: Yeah, I'm going to walk into the restaurant to get my food so I don't have to tip now. 1:54 – Mason: Exactly. Now, something that I think we talked about last month with... And we're talking again this month, Met Gala. I mean, how much are we going to talk about this? Doja Cat, we already know she was telling everyone, which I thought was the cutest thing ever and it was hilarious. And who's the guy that was in the first suit? It's going to kill me. Jared Leto. Oh, I knew his name. 2:18 – Baily: Yes. He was also Doja Cat and Jared Leto were the top searched women and men, respectively. I think it were the cat suits. I think people were really intrigued. They did something a little different than we usually see on the red carpet of Met Gala. 2:33 – Mason: Well, I think there wasn't a lot you could do. So I think they were trying to be as creative as possible, which I think it worked out. I really think if I had to rate them, Doja Cat won. I just really liked the face costume. I thought that was a lot. And then she stuck to it by meowing to everybody. So I'm like, Dude, she was in character. She looked really good. I love the dress. I think she went the whole 10 yards.   3:02 – Baily: I completely agree. And then just leaning into the fact that she's Doja Cat, it just was like the full brand was all there. 3:09 – Mason: Oh, that's so true. Doja Cat, how silly of me. I didn't get the pun. Now, another thing that happened in May is a Cinco de Mayo. And my mom actually went and celebrated something called Mole de Mayo.

Thanks for joining me, Sarah. 00:10 - Sarah Armstrong: Thank you for having me. 00:12 - Mason Paine: So there's been a lot of things that happened this past month. Tell me, what has been trending, though? 00:17 - Sarah Armstrong: Right. So we've seen lots of different trends around entertainment, culture, sports, lots of religious holidays in April. We see that every year with Passover, Easter, and Eid. Tax season is April. Then we saw some fun trends like Coachella, the Bobby movie, NBA. So lots to talk about. 00:35 - Mason Paine: Oh, my God. Can we start off with the Bobby movie? I don't know about you, but I was weirdly excited about it. 00:41 - Sarah Armstrong: Yes, I'm so glad you're starting there. I am very excited for the Bobby movie. I'm a huge Greta Gerwood fan. She's directing the film. She also directed Lady Bird and Little Women. It is a stacked cast, so we're seeing a lot of searches around it, and there's a lot of hype on social media as well. 00:57 - Mason Paine: I saw the trailer and I thought to myself, this reminds me a lot of the Lego movie where it's a kid playing with toys. I wonder if this is the same direction because it has that feel. 1:09 - Sarah Armstrong: Right. So the trailer didn't give much away about the plot, but there's a lot of theories spinning up about it. I think yours is really good. I also wonder if there's a Wizard of Oz theme to it because they had some hints that a Wizard of Oz imagery throughout the trailer, but no one's really sure what the plot is going to be. 1:27 - Mason Paine: So I'm curious, though, besides the movie, did Barbie itself become trending as well? 1:31 - Sarah Armstrong: Yes, Bobby was absolutely trending. We looked at some of those top questions that people ask about Bobby. The top one was how old is the Bobby doll? People think that the doll is supposed to be in her 20s. When was Bobby first made? That's 1959. So very old toy, but it keeps coming back again and again. 1:53 - Mason Paine: I can't remember her full name. Isn't it Barbara Maleficent or Melissa Lindt or something like that? 2:00 - Sarah Armstrong:  Yes. Melissa Roberts is the full name.2:05 - Mason Paine: Yeah. I was getting confused with the Disney movie Maleficent. 2:09 - Sarah Armstrong: Yeah, totally fair. 2:11 - Mason Paine: Besides that in entertainment, Coachella, that's a huge thing in April. I'm curious, did you go?2:16 - Sarah Armstrong: I didn't go. I'm pretty jealous of everyone who went though because it looked really fun. I'd somehow never been to Coachella, but it looks like 250,000 people go every year over the two weekends. So definitely a popular event. 2:30 - Mason Paine: Absolutely. I've known a few people who have went, but nobody has really talked about the food. And this past week, I was looking at videos of people who are eating at Coachella, and they're like spending $40 on their three Tacos. And I was like, That right there is a violation of human rights. There's no way a taco should be $40. 2:52 - Sarah Armstrong: Right. I bet it's so expensive. I worry about the weather. I know it gets really hot and it's sandy out there, but people seem to really love it.

In 1987 Suzanne Vega wrote and recorded Tom's Diner. This song was recorded acapella and it was Vega describing the different activities that were taking place in her neighborhood diner. This song was released on her second album “Solitude Standing”. English music duo in 1990 DNA which consisted of Nick Batt and Neal Slateford remixed the song. They added drum machines, synthesizers to the acapella which created a new distinctive sound. Here is a listen to  "Tom's Diner" . "Tom's Diner" became a surprise hit in Europe and reached the top ten in several countries. When DNA remixed the song, they did it without Suzanne Vega knowledge or permission. Even though she was originally upset, she grew to love the new version of the song and performed the song with DNA. This remix actually paved the way for all remixes because it allowed DJ's to breathe new life into an original track; taking it into an entirely new direction. [00:02] - Mason Paine: Google trends expert Sarah Armstrong is here with the top search trends in science, entertainment, sports, and other news for the month of March. Thanks for joining me, Sarah. [00:11] - Sarah Armstrong: Thank you for having me. [00:12] - Mason Paine: So what are the big things that were on Google for this month? [00:16] - Sarah Armstrong: We had lots of different topics trending this month. And the World of Entertainment, of course, it was the Oscars and Succession premiered. There was also St. Patrick's Day and Women's History Month, Daylight Savings, Time March Madness. So lots of fun stuff going on in March. [00:31] - Mason Paine: Yeah, my favorite thing, not going to lie, is the Oscars. I just love movies. And this year was just absolutely fantastic. There were so many good movies. I'm shocked what got snubbed, and I was shocked what was in there. But what was trending this month when it comes to the Oscars? [00:49] - Sarah Armstrong: Totally. I love looking at these Oscars trends, and it was so fun to watch the ceremony. The leading up to the Oscars, Avatar. That's the movie that was really trending on Google. It was beating out all the other movies, at least in search trends. But then, of course, after the Oscars, everything everywhere all at once completely swept, and we saw way more search interest in that movie than anything else. [1:12] - Mason Paine: And I'm surprised because I really thought Avatar was going to do so much better than what it did. And then out of left field, everything everywhere all at once just took everything. And I absolutely adore that movie. So I was nothing but excited once I was like, Oh, my God, they're winning. They're winning everything. It's like, I just bet on this horse and it was going to make me gold. [1:34] - Sarah Armstrong: Totally. It was so interesting to see these huge, big budget blockbusters, Top Gun, Avatar, loose to what was a very small budget movie and everything everywhere all at once. And we saw the top acting awards go to that movie. Of course, they won best picture. So really exciting night for that team. [1:53] - Mason Paine: Yeah. And what was also strange for me was there was a lot of movies that got snubbed. Again, last year there was so many movies, and I didn't realize how good all these movies were that didn't even get a nomination. The Woman King, The Northman, Pearl, 3000 Years of Longing, Where the Crow Dad Sings. I could go on forever. So it was wild to see how many movies that were nominated and how many weren't. I'm just curious, were any of the snubs trending at all? [2:25] - Sarah Armstrong: You're absolutely right. We went ahead and looked at those SNAP searches, and the Northman was the top Oscar SNAP search, followed by Kill, Don't Worry Darling actually hit number three there, Woman King, and then the menu for Oscar SNAP. [2:40] - Mason Paine: Yeah, I saw the Northman in theaters, and I was really geeked out that they used a lot of people from that region because you know Northman Vikings. And one of them they used was Bjork the singer. So I was thinking to myself when I found out, I couldn't believe Bjork was in that movie. And of course, she had to play the weird witch Dr. Shaman thing. So I was like, Oh, that was totally Bjork. [03:03] - Sarah Armstrong: That's awesome. I still haven't seen the North and you'll have to go check it out. And clearly,
