Joe Rihn is a DJ, musician and writer with endless enthusiasm for his hometown of Los Angeles. His show Audio Days explores the wide world of electronic music and beyond with particular attention to artists pushing the boundaries of sound. In this special interview episode of Audio Days, influential UK artist Mark Stewart discusses his body of work, his creative processes and the music that has inspired him along the way. After beginning his career as the frontman of Bristol's celebrated post-punk band The Pop Group, Stewart went on to break new ground in electronic music through his work with dub producer and On-U Sound Records head, Adrian Sherwood, along with drummer Keith LeBlanc, bassist Doug Wimbish and guitarist Skip McDonald. Having performed as members of the Sugar Hill Records house band on early hip hop classics including “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, LeBlanc, Wimbish and McDonald provided the instrumental foundation for Stewart's 1985 album, “As the Veneer of Democracy Starts to Fade,” as well as other projects such as Tackhead and Fats Comet. With his new record “VS.,” which releases April 8, 2022 on Emergency Hearts, Stewart continues in that collaborative spirit. In addition to including names like KK Null, Stephen Mallidner and Mike Watt in its roster of uncompromising artists, VS. features contributions from late musicians Lee “Scratch” Perry and Mika Vainio. Following the hour-long interview segment, this episode features a mix of industrial, synth-wave and left-field cuts from the orbit of Mark Stewart and beyond. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dublab-inconversation/support

As a tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto on the first anniversary of his passing, Caro C talks to Richard Barbieri, Natalie Beridze and Carsten Nicolai, aka Alva Noto, three musicians who were fortunate enough to collaborate with him. Here, they share some insights into his mindset and methodologies. Chapters00:00 - Introduction01:44 - Richard Barbieri09:04 - Natalie Beridze 19:45 - Carsten Nicolai / Alva Noto Ryuichi Sakamoto BiogRyuichi Sakamoto was a multi award-winning keyboardist, songwriter, composer and producer who along with Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, became pioneers of the electronic music genre in Honsono's band Yellow Magic Orchestra.Prior to his success with the band, Sakamoto earned a B.A. in music composition and worked as a session musician and producer. Alongside his success with the band, he continued his solo work, releasing solo albums and collaborations, experimenting with various genres and fusing traditional with electronic. This work led to him scoring more than 30 films throughout his career, his most famous being Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence and The Last Emperor. In his later career he composed a multimedia opera, sampled a glass building for use in one of his works and traveled to the Arctic to record the sound of melting snow.Richard Barbieri BiogHailing from London, Richard joined the British band Japan in 1975 and saw huge success around the world until they split in 1982. He continued to work with David Sylvian, as well as Sylvian's brother, Steve Jansen on separate projects. He reunited with Sylvian, Jansen and bass player Mick Karn for the Rain Tree Crow project and continued to play with Steve & Mick as part of ‘JBK'. In the early 1990s, the three of them teamed up with Tim Bowness and Steven Wilson as part of No-Man and it was here that Barbieri and Wilson would begin their long musical association. Porcupine Tree had initially been a Wilson solo project but he recruited Richard in 1993 and over the next 17 years, became one of the shining lights of the neo-prog / pop scene, embracing a more heavy style as the years went on. Reuniting in 2021, they released the first Porcupine Tree album in 12 years with 2022's ‘Closure/ Continuation', a critically acclaimed return to form. Richard has a large body of solo work which he started to release in 2005 and still does to this day.http://www.richardbarbieri.co.uk/Natalie Beridze BiogNatalie Beridze is a Georgian music composer and songwriter. Since 2003 Natalie has been performing live concerts worldwide, and has been known as the first female electronic music artist from Georgia. From 2002-2008 she lived in Cologne and produced music under the artist name TBA. She's released music in Europe on Max.E, Monika Enterprise, CMYK, Laboratory Instinct, CES Records DADO records, Apollo Records Chainmusic, CES Records and ROOM40.In addition to her solo projects, Beridze has collaborated with artists such as Thomas Brinkmann, AGF (Antye Greie), Gudrun Gut, Joerg Follert, Marcus Schmickler, Nika Machaidze aka Nikakoi, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Gacha Bakradze, Alex Kordzaia, Annika Henderson, Antye Greie-Fuchs, Barbara Morgenstern, Beate Bartel, Danielle De Picciotto, Gudrun Bredemann, Lucrecia Dalt, Merja Kokkonen, Mommo G, Natalie Beridze, Pilocka Krach, Sonae. His various musical projects include collaborations with Ryōji Ikeda, Mika Vainio, Iggy Pop, Blixa Bargeld and Ryūichi Sakamoto. Episode 114 Refined Noise Playlist Claus Böhmler, “Klangundkrach, Part 1” from Klangundkrach (1996) (2014 Slowscan). Recorded in Hamburg 1996. Edition of 270 copies. Böhmler was a German visual artist, video maker, and sometimes music artist. His website contains a great sampling of his visual work, texts, and writing about his work. There are not many clues as to how he made this recording except for a cover photo of several Walkman style cassette players with output cables attached. (12:46) David Cunningham, “Guitar Systemised” and “Water Systemised” from Grey Scale (1977 Piano). For tape recorder and guitar sounds or water sounds. These two works mimic a process used in some of his other compositions where, “The players play a repeating phrase. As soon as one player makes a mistake that mistake is made the basis of his repetition unless it is modified by a further mistake. Thus each player proceeds at his own rate to change the sound in an uncontrollable manner.” Except for in the case of these two works, the water piece and the guitar piece, the process is “analogous” to those works but “the process is automatic here, an inherent quality in the machinery used.” (03:10) and (04:06) Luke Fowler, “GOLD Side” from Fowl Tapes II (2013 Dekorder). Keyboards, Richard Youngs; Piano and synthesizer, Luke Fowler. Source material performed by Luke Fowler between 2009 and 2011. (17:43) Merzbow / Genesis P-Orridge, “Source Are Rare” from A Perfect Pain (1999 Cold Spring). Noise Electronics, BIAS Electric Drum Unit, TR606, Filters, Ring modulation, Masami Akita (Merzbow); vocals, producer, Genesis P-Orridge. Genesis P-Orridge: master DAT edited at The Armadillo Studio, Northampton, England, May 1998. Masami Akita: recorded & mixed at Bed Room, August 1998. (23:06) Emory Cook, “Untitled track 1” from Microfusion White Sound: Popular Combo (circa 1960 Cook). Emory Cook was known for making high fidelity location recordings and musical records from the mid-1950s to the1960s. He patented a special vinyl pressing technique called Microfusion to produce high quality records. When he wasn't releasing sound effects such as Mexican Firecrackers or location recordings of calypso music, steel bands or a Creole Christmas, Cook managed to slip a few strange experiments into his catalog. This record, number 40850, comes from a series of five albums he produced around 1960 that combined musical tracks from his other albums with a track of pure white noise. The music would play on the left, the white sound would play at the same time on the right. I have several of these discs plus a demo album that Cook produced. The tag line for the “White Sound Series” was “analgesic sound for control of tensions.” The cover stated boldly that the album was “The new analgesic white sound to help in control of Tension, Headaches, Insomnia, Appetite, Smoking. A natural relaxant.” You be the judge as you listen to a track of a popular “cocktail combo” (called a “popular combo” on the record label, combined with white sound. “Not to be played at more than ordinary room volume level.” (03:15) Narwhalz Of Sound / Mincemeat Or Tenspeed, “Untitled” (3 tracks, side 2) from Doonesbury Dropout, Frasier Freedom / A Rave New World (2010 Isle of Man). This is a test pressing of what I think is this album. Side 2 is by Mincemeat Or Tenspeed, an electronic musician from Rhode Island (currently). (14:15) Pod Blotz, “Giving,” “Future Romance From The Past,” “Crests And Reflections,” and “Black Glass Monolith” from Glass Tears (2013 Clan Destine Records). Music project of experimental artist and musician Suzy Poling. (18:05) Opening background music: Mika Vainio, “Lydspor (Part I)” from Lydspor One & Two (2018 Moog Recordings Library). Producer, curator, Paul Smith; Moog Technical Support, Recording Engineering, Finlay Shakespeare. Part of a limited series of Moog albums produced at Surrey University when they were home to a set of Moog Modular synthesizers and components, on arrangement with Moog Music USA. Mika Vainio was born in Helsinki, Finland and died in 2017 in France at aged 53. He was an electronic musician, composer, and producer. (19:26) Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation. For additional notes, please see my blog, Noise and Notations.

I avsnittet: Pan Sonic, Mika Vainio, Ilpo Väisänen, Björk, Mikko Alatalo, Juice Leskinen, Coitus Int., Kauko Röyhkä, Trygve Söderling, Tapani Ritamäki, Maustetytöt, Leevi and the Leavings. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/462  Presented by: Bearvault, Daiichi, Waters West  Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors   Jani Himanko is here to talk about fishing Finland and give us amazing options and resources on your next trip there. We find out who the other European lodges that run drift boats are. We also get a feel for this lodge and the restaurant that is literally on the river. We get an insight into the European Hall of Fame as well. Everything Finland today! Let's find out how to plan that next European vacation. Fishing Finland Show Notes with Jani Himanko 3:48 - Jani shares his first memory of fly fishing. When he saw the film A River Runs Through It, he was hooked. That's the main reason he became a fly fisher. 5:26 - He tells the interesting story of how he got to own the Kapeenkoski and how he was hesitant at first to take the opportunity. Currently, they also offer rafting and river boarding besides fishing. 11:12 - They have a place in the lodge for dining and private parties like weddings. This is located by the water which he calls a "trout land" because it's a perfect place for trouts to spawn. 14:51 - We talk about why he chose Willie Boats for their drift boats. Their river has a lot of rocks that's why they prefer aluminum boats. For the oars, I recommend him the ones from Sawyer. 16:39 - He describes Finland as very similar to Norway and Sweden in terms of language and culture. He also talks a bit more about Norway. He loves going there every year to fish with his friends. We also covered fly fishing in Norway in episodes 286 and 419. 19:40 - The closes city to their lodge is Jyvaskyla. He tells us how to visit their lodge if you're flying from New York. According to Jani, you won't be able to find Kapeenkonski on the map. Instead, search for Laukaa or Äänekoivisto. 21:51 - He mentions the species you can find in their river such as brown trout, grayling, and pike-perch or zander. They also have 20-30 lb. northern pikes. 23:28 - We dig into their guided fishing and the fishing seasons at Kapeenkoski. They are already sold out for June this year, but they have availability for July to August. 27:25 - We dig into his fishing techniques. Streamer fishing is his favorite fly fishing method. He also shares a bit about his clients' experiences. 31:45 - The best season for dry flies is late July to August. The Goddard caddis in size 10, 12, or 14 is the best pattern to have in your box. He also recommends the Swedish Super pupa. 33:56 - Aside from the fishing laws in Finland, he also makes the local fishing rules. Clients can euro nymph in their waters, but there are some restrictions which he explains further. 37:37 - We go back to dry fly fishing. 39:04 - He gives tips and information on creating your itinerary for Finland. We also talk a bit about European beers and drinks. He drinks Lonkero which he says is the Finnish national drink of fly fishermen. 43:34 - He tells a funny story about that time when he and his wife visited Munich, Germany. 45:10 - I ask him what food they usually serve their clients in Kapeenkoski. We also talk about the seasons and culture in Finland. The best time to visit is summer. 49:15 - He tells his favorite Guns N' Roses song and album. 50:20 - He shares his perspective on how Finland is different from Germany. We also dig into their country's history involving Russia and other European countries. He already has been to the Kola Peninsula in Russia many times to fish. 55:50 - When Jani was 19, he did military training for 11 months and served as a chef there. 59:16 - We talk about hunting in Finland. The species they usually hunt are ducks and moose. 1:00:41 - We dig into how they do streamer fishing. His friend, Mika Vainio, whom he says is one of the best streamer fishermen in Finland created the Musta Kostaja or "The Black Avenger". 1:04:08 - They have this Finnish fly called Surffilauta or the "surfboard tube fly". It's a dry fly, but it's a streamer. 1:07:09 - I ask him about his recognition as the driving force behind fishing tourism in Central Finland. His name can be found in the Finnish Fishing Hall of Fame in Kotka's Maretarium. 1:07:48 - He also writes articles for some fishing magazines such as Metsastys ja Kalastus which he says is the biggest fishing magazine in Scandinavia. 1:08:46 - I ask him about Scandinavia and fishing in Estonia. He also mentions some rivers in Finland that are great for fishing and the species you can find in each of them. 1:12:11 - We talk a bit about hockey in Finland. Jyp Jyvaskyla is his hometown's team. 1:13:40 - He shares his experience in raising his two daughters. 1:16:20 - He used to be a salesman at Rapala, a lure company. A Strangely Isolated Place
Portals: Power Ambient

A Strangely Isolated Place

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 12, 2022

"Ambient as interesting as it is interesting"The term Power Ambient is yes, another attempt at putting a badge or genre to a wide-encompassing range of music stylistically, but it's one that I have often gravitated towards amongst many others when describing a particular style of music we are dealing with here. When it comes to a spectrum of Ambient music styles, I'm more often than not on the ‘lean in' side of things, than the ‘lean back'. It's easy to throw up Brian Eno's definition of Ambient music “…as ignorable as it is interesting” to help elaborate on what I mean, as essentially within a Power Ambient context, we are removing the desire to ignore it.To put it another way, Power Ambient is best suited to those who want to immerse themselves in the music; the wall of sound; big movements; rumbling bass; wide frequencies, and layers of dense drones. These are elements that envelope a space in richness; be it soft and all-encompassing like a heavy blanket, or more on the noise spectrum, making your body rattle and the hairs on your neck stand-up on end. But the common output is that you're better off taking note of what's happening, than sticking it on in the background and making a cup of tea. It's not a new descriptive term. A 2014 Fact magazine article captured a few artists that seemed to be prevailing in this style, alongside a mix that Chris SSG loosely described as including Power Ambient (now Chris references his style as Big Room Ambient) and more. recently a Bandcamp list (although not sure all that stuff aligns with my own vision for it). There is no doubt in my mind, however, that a powerful style of Ambient music has exploded in recent years (as has the creativity of Ambient music in general, really). Perhaps this style has been more embraced due to a couple of things. In dark times comes inherent anger and expression, and it's pretty grim out there right now. For any music culture, this can often send people into darker production spaces. Secondly, I can feel an emerging undercurrent of rebellion for what ‘Ambient' can stand for nowadays. With a world of meditative apps and ‘Piano Chill' playlists continuing to give Ambient music a certain reputation, (at least we have moved on from Spa music, right?), I have a feeling this stereotyping is pushing producers, and even listeners to explore new styles of Ambient music, and opening doors into more expressive forms of music that stand out against an all too frequent beige playlist. Don't get me wrong, this doesn't mean that Power Ambient is just noise and complexity for the sake of it (it can be) but like all music, there's an art to getting the balance right. For me, Power Ambient can range from relatively quiet, intense soundscapes with a mysterious underpinning, to just short of full-on Merzbow wall-shaking. Call it a version of Noise, Drone, Experimental, whatever, but wrapped in a different guise, it's still bearable as Ambient music but stops short of becoming too much. I wanted to highlight just a few of my favorite artists whose broad strokes defined ‘Ambient' music, has always made me sit up and listen. As with all Portals features, I try to focus on a mix to bring the idea to life and a jump-off/entry point for the artists included. This was harder to mix than a regular DJ set, because of the inherent energy of Power Ambient music. Used consistently in a mix, at some point you're going to get burnt out and it will start to fade into the background just like listening to white noise. In my experience, Ambient tracks with force or energy are best used interspersed in sets to make people lean in and grab their attention, or as part of other styles to continue a certain level of energy (I've heard this type of music as an interlude in more heavy beat-driven sets for example). It can also work great as a live show where the listener knows what they are getting into already, of course (earplugs at the ready). As a 1hr+ mix, I, therefore, had to be considerate of the energy and flow and tried to create a few distinct chapters with peaks and troughs and an easy onramp at the beginning. I encourage you to use the links below to jump off into each artist's universe on Bandcamp. Despite it being a relatively well-known list of musicians when it comes to the Ambient enthusiasts, I've tried to give a good snapshot of artists that might push into this style within some of their works, especially if any of this music is new to you. RIP to two influential producers included in this mix, Cesar (Mount Shrine) and one of the greatest noise/experimental artists of our time, Mika Vainio. @stefangoldmann runs the @macrorec label and is closely associated with Berlin's @berghain club. Though nominally techno, his music is distinguished by an ever-imaginative take on the form. It's definitely club music but of a rather distinctive kind produced by a creator who's exceptionally imaginative, endlessly curious, and, one presumes, never happier than when bringing a project to fruition. Several of his tracks have served as genre-shifting blueprints – from his early reductionist works for the Classic and Perlon labels to Sleepy Hollow, Lunatic Fringe or The Maze. Yet he has ventured into a line of projects hacking away at the core features of techno, with systematic forays into, for example, irregular rhythms, microtonal tunings and the recontextualisation of industrial sound design. Apart from DJing in clubs around the globe, his projects have also brought him to locations as distinctive as the Berlin Philharmonic, Los Angeles's LACMA museum and Kyoto's Honen-in Temple. His mix for @recorder-13 sees him build a highly focused arc, originating from amorphous tones by Grischa Lichtenberger and Mika Vainio, projecting through intricate structural experiments by Donato Dozzy, Stanislav Tolkachev and Aleksi Perälä and culminating in high pressure tracks by the likes of Schacke, L'estasi Dell'oro and Peter van Hoesen. The landing point is an excerpt from Stefan Goldmann's 'Live At Philharmonie Berlin' album, which was just released on Macro. Tracklist: 1. Grischa Lichtenberger - 0910_29_re_0910_08 (Semantica) 2.

Ekko & Frithjof Toksvig – Sleepy CopenhagenEkko – RehearsalVanessa Amara – 20-03-2017  21-12-2016  06-02-2016Soho Rezanejad & Frederik Valentin – One of my ShadesAstrid Sonne – Cancelled EyesScandinavian Star – AlangVanity Productions – AlabasterThe Empire Line – Ø (for Vainio)Ø – RadiumPan Sonic – RadiokemiaPan Sonic – LomittainPan Sonic – Virta 1. / Current 1Ø – Unien HolvitØ – HikariGreie Gut Fraktion – Drilling An Ocean – Mika Vainio MixMika Vainio, Ryoji Ikeda & Alva Noto – Movements 10Ryuichi Sakamoto – solari (Jóhann Jóhannsson Rework)Johann Johannson – Karen Býr Til EngilJohann Johannson – The Great God Pan is DeadJohann Johannson – Flight from the CityJohann Johannson – The Jewish Cemetery on MoellegadeJohann Johannson – A Model of the Universe

Mysteries of the Deep Podcast, Kyynelin 1 by Patrick Russell. A heavy-hearted tribute to the sonic design and emotional potency of Mika Vainio, here exploring a brief cross-section of his vast ambient and experimental catalog. Mika shaped how I perceive and present music. His work was, and will continue to be, an incalculable influence on my sets at Mysteries of the Deep and beyond. Rest in Power. Kyynelin 2 will be a tribute to his more aggressive, floor-friendly sounds, presented in a live context only. Tracklist: 1. Ø - Radio 2. Mika Vainio - Hengityttajä / The Breather 3. You Are Hear alternative new music presented by Jim Backhouse Feb 9th 2007 Feb 9th For this week's You Are Hear, Jim Backhouse trawls the knotted undergrowth of early electronic music for more astringent blasts of analogue synth-blatt, elaborate tape manipulation and the sounds of visionary inventors struggling with primitive technologies: from the pioneering soundworks of Daphne Oram, founder of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop to the precocious bleeps and squawks of some US High School Students let loose in the electronic music lab. Mika Vainio also brings us a genuinely terrifying sliver of noise from his new album 'Revitty' which sounds reminiscent of being torn limb-from-limb by a shoal of bloodthirsty sharks; Adam Bohman offers sage advice to the ill and lovelorn, and besides that we have plenty more psychedelic, electronic, home-made, DIY, perverse, collective karma for you to bug out to. Enjoy! This mix includes dense aural fogs and deep soundscapes of clarity from the likes of Mika Vainio, Deathprod, CoH, field recordist Chris Watson, and the majestic Delia Derbyshire. Coldfall is inspired by the now-fragmented ancient woodland of London and its perseverance throughout the centuries. It also owes much to erratic weather patterns deluging London with downpours during the time of its conception.   Originally broadcast on Ill FM, August 2009.   Tracklisting: Mark Pritchard - ?
