fWotD Episode 2718: The Riddle of the Sphinx (Inside No. 9) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 13 October 2024 is The Riddle of the Sphinx (Inside No. 9)."The Riddle of the Sphinx" is the third episode of the third series of the British dark comedy anthology television programme Inside No. 9. It first aired, on BBC Two, on 28 February 2017. The episode was written by the programme's creators, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, and directed by Guillem Morales. "The Riddle of the Sphinx", which is set in Cambridge, stars Alexandra Roach as Nina, a young woman seeking answers to the Varsity cryptic crossword, Pemberton as Professor Nigel Squires, who pseudonymously sets the crossword using the name Sphinx, and Shearsmith as Dr Jacob Tyler, another Cambridge academic. The story begins with Nina surreptitiously entering Squires's rooms on a stormy night and being discovered; this leads to Squires teaching her how to decipher clues in cryptic crosswords. The plot of "The Riddle of the Sphinx" revolves around the clues and answers to a particular crossword puzzle. The idea to focus an episode on crosswords came from Pemberton; he had long been a fan of cryptic crosswords, but particular inspiration came from Two Girls, One on Each Knee: The Puzzling, Playful World of the Crossword, a non-fiction book by Alan Connor. The crossword featured in "The Riddle of the Sphinx" was set by Pemberton, and was published in The Guardian on the day the episode aired, credited to "Sphinx". This crossword contains multiple ninas—hidden messages or words. Along with many of the crossword's answers, one nina is integral to the episode's plot. A second was introduced accidentally, and then incorporated into the episode. A third nina is an Inside No. 9 in-joke.Influences for "The Riddle of the Sphinx", which emphasises gothicism over comedy, include Anthony Shaffer's 1970 play Sleuth, the work of Anton Chekhov, and the 1989 film The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover. Critics responded extremely positively to the episode, lauding its writing and the precise attention to detail in the production. Commentators noted that the episode was very dark, and probably the cleverest episode of Inside No. 9 to date. Roach's performance was praised, as was the direction of Morales. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:43 UTC on Sunday, 13 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see The Riddle of the Sphinx (Inside No. 9) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Aria.

After Errementari, we travel back to España with an interesting twist on the “whodunnit!” This week’s film explores some cool themes centered around blindness: what’s seen, what’s unseen, and the tensions therein. Though even with one of Tim’s new favorite body horror moments, Julia’s Eyes floundered in the overall execution, earning a “stream” from Tim and an “avoid” from Ryan. When the Nighthawks Podcast first started off, there were two things the guys wanted to do: 1.) To aid in the accessibility of film as an art form. 2.) To shine a light on films that people may have missed. The meat and potatoes of this episode comes solidly from these goals. In this episode Matt and Trevor discuss two films, with strong female protagonists, where the main characters have to overcome a deprivation of their senses. These are films that not only share a theme of sensory deprivation, not only are they movies with strong female leads, they're also movies that may have escaped the attention of the movie-going public at large. First up the horror-action home-invasion thriller HUSH. Directed/co-written by OCULUS helmer Mike Flanagan, and co-written/starring Kate Siegel, HUSH follows a deaf mute author living on her own in rural Alabama, as she is beset upon by a particularly sardonic killer. Hot off the griddle at SXSW 2016, the film was picked up by NETFLIX and is currently streaming on that service. Having eschewed a wide national theatrical release, the boys discuss why an expedient home release may have been a good move in this case. Second course is the Spanish-Language mystery thriller JULIA'S EYES. Directed by Guillem Morales and produced by Guillermo del Toro, the film follows a woman racing the clock set by her own deteriorating vision, to try and answer questions left in the wake of her sister's alleged suicide. A creepy and cerebral whodunnit that utilizes an interesting device in depicting blindness on screen. JULIA'S EYES is available on several pay-per-view streaming sites including Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes for about $3.00. It is also available through the SHUDDER streaming service as part of their library.

My special guest this week is my new "Coolest Person in the Entire World", the incredibly talented and remarkably woofy HOMER MARRS! He sings, he plays guitar, he writes songs, he does all kinds of comedy, and he smells nice. Mostly he's hear to share some of his song stylings with us and rap about WARLOCK. First up, THE CRAPSHOOT returns to let us know if we should watch JULIA'S EYES or just spit in them. Sure, it's reuniting producer Guillermo Del Toro, director Guillem Morales and THE ORPHANAGE'S star Belén Rueda...but that would makeit even more fun to kick their over-confident culos" And then Listener Trae has to face the music for recommending that I watch GRAVE ENCOUNTERS. Did he do a Good Thing?....or did he do a Baaaaad Thing? Either way, I'll probably yell "Fuck you!" at somebody at some point, so you can be assured about that. And finally, Homer and I chat about WARLOCK, why it was awesome, why it sucked and why it inspired him to right a poignant ballad about its star. All this and more. God, I could plotz!
